Chapter 37: The Fool Who Abandons Her Wife and Child in the Apocalypse (Part 7)

Wen Su reached out and pressed down on Wen Zhao’s head. She bent over slightly, her elegant face still carrying a smile. “Xiao Zhao, you don’t need to probe me.”

“I won’t go looking for her for now.”

Wen Zhao’s little mouth opened wide as she put on a surprised expression. “Ah, I got caught.” There were heavy traces of acting in it.

She had indeed just wanted to know when Wen Su would make her move, hoping that Ke Mama wouldn’t be found too soon.

Wen Su’s hand had no warmth. She gently tightened her fingers. “Xiao Zhao, I am the one who created you. You shouldn’t feel hostility toward me.”

Feeling the pain transmitted from her skull, Wen Zhao’s eyelashes trembled. She furrowed her brows in grievance, her youthful face full of worry. “Sorry, Mama. After all, you were pushed off the car by Ke Mama. Isn’t it natural for me to worry that you’d take revenge on her?”

The curve of Wen Su’s lips widened a bit. She released Wen Zhao’s head and tucked both hands into her white coat. “Yes, I will indeed take revenge on her.”

Wen Su straightened up, sidestepped Wen Zhao, and walked toward a white building. “Xiao Zhao, you are my daughter. My tolerance for you is greater than you imagine, so there’s no need to probe me.”

After a long while, Wen Zhao tilted her head and yawned boredly. “What a letdown. I thought Mama was going to crush my head.”

She couldn’t figure out Mama’s thoughts, but based on Mama’s usual interactions with Ke Mama, once Mama caught Ke Mama, she would most likely use her for experiments.

Wen Zhao patted her forehead and narrowed her eyes. “In that case, I can go take care of my heat period first.” After all, Mama had said she wouldn’t go after Ke Mama for now.

“The Cross-Sea Bridge has collapsed. We can only turn back and take another route.” Li Yuanyuan’s expression wasn’t good.

When they had come this way, the bridge had been perfectly fine. The only thing that could collapse a bridge like this was a monster.

An unprecedentedly powerful monster had appeared here.

It might have been a mutant animal or an ability zombie.

Shen Ke wore Qu Xi’s clothes and pants. She kept tugging Qu Xi back. “Let’s go back. This place gives me a really bad feeling.”

Qu Xi pressed down on Shen Ke’s arm and nodded. “We should indeed go back. We don’t have any flying ability users here, and the gap is too wide. We can’t jump across.”

Zhang Li frowned. “But going back means we’ll have to spend the night in the wilderness again.”

“And with this distance—” Zhang Li said as she pulled an anchor hook launcher from her bag and aimed it at the steel cable on the other side.

The anchor hook wrapped around the steel cable twice, hooking firmly onto the one opposite.

Zhang Li secured the rope with the launcher on this side, then pointed at the fixed rope. “We can climb across this rope.”

Seeing the others’ expressions soften, Zhang Li took the lead with a demonstration. She gripped the rope with both hands, dangled her body in mid-air, and with arm strength, crossed to the other side of the bridge in two or three pulls.

Looking at Zhang Li waving from the other side, Song Man said, “This method works. Let’s go.”

But Shen Ke resisted. “No!” She grabbed Qu Xi’s hand and shook her head vigorously. “I feel it’s very dangerous. We can’t go this way!”

Song Man frowned. “If you don’t want to, you can stay here alone.” With that, Song Man crossed the bridge the same way as Zhang Li and shouted from the other side, “Qu Xi, hurry over!”

Shen Ke looked down at the calm sea surface under the bridge, then at Qu Xi with her willow brows raised. “You’re going over too?”

Qu Xi nodded. “This is the shortest route.”

Li Yuanyuan waved her hand. “Hey, Qu Xi, if she doesn’t want to go that badly, just leave her here. There are plenty of women at the base if you really want one.”

“No need to waste our time on some random woman who popped up.”

Hearing this, Shen Ke glared viciously at Li Yuanyuan, but considering she was a B-rank ability user, she didn’t dare curse her out. She could only snort coldly and say to Qu Xi, “I forbid you from going! You said you’d protect me!”

No! If standing on the bridge meant being killed by mutant fish leaping from the sea, then this side should be the same, since there was sea under their feet too.

But not a single fish had emerged from this side, which could only mean a bigger monster lurked in the water beneath them!

The Cross-Sea Bridge was very long. Even at her speed, it would take five minutes to run back from here. She could only pray the monster under their feet wouldn’t surface.

But Qu Xi’s prayers had no effect. She felt the bridge deck start to tremble as something rushed up from below!

Shen Ke clung to Qu Xi’s neck and suddenly screamed, “Qu Xi, run fast!”

A massive whale leaped out of the water surface. The calm sea instantly turned turbulent. The waves brought up by the whale crashed down like heavy rain, soaking the entire bridge deck. Shen Ke and Qu Xi were completely drenched by the seawater.

Qu Xi clicked her tongue. The whale hadn’t just brought up seawater—it had also carried mutant fish mixed in with the water onto the bridge.

Wounds appeared on her arms, legs, cheeks, and waist.

The only silver lining was that they were all small fish and shrimp, none capable of fatal damage to her.

Shen Ke hugged Qu Xi tightly, her eyes red with fright. “I told you we shouldn’t go!” This whale was enormous—enormous enough that she could only describe it as blocking out the sky.

Never before had she felt as insignificant as an ant.

Was she going to die? She didn’t want to!

Looking at the mutant fish in the seawater lifted by the whale again, Shen Ke’s eyes turned blue, her hands became claws, and she quickly killed off all the fish trying to harm her.

Qu Xi tightened her hold on Shen Ke. She needed to go even faster.

“Bang!” The whale’s tail slammed into the bridge deck. A massive rumbling sound accompanied the heavy impact into the water, and the bridge deck was abruptly smashed apart.

Qu Xi gritted her teeth. She couldn’t use her supernatural ability, or Shen Ke would definitely die under it. Fortunately, this mutant whale’s attack speed wasn’t fast. Each time, she managed to run out of the tail’s range in the final seconds before it fell.

By the time they ran back to solid ground, the whale finally stopped chasing them.

Qu Xi’s heart was pounding too fast. She sat down on the ground holding Shen Ke, panting heavily. “We almost… almost died.”

Shen Ke pinned her down and, in a fit of anger, slapped Qu Xi across the face.

As an A-rank ability user, Qu Xi had tough skin and flesh; she felt no pain, but she didn’t understand why Shen Ke had hit her.

Frowning, Qu Xi grabbed Shen Ke’s hand as she tried to hit again, her tone puzzled. “Why did you hit me?”

Shen Ke bit her lower lip and cursed, “I told you not to cross the bridge! Are you a stupid bastard?” They’d been together less than two days, but because of this incident, Shen Ke’s true nature fully emerged.

She spoke viciously, “Because of you lot, I almost died!”

Qu Xi didn’t sense anything wrong, and Shen Ke’s words left her speechless. She really had made a mistake. If she’d stopped Li Yuanyuan and the others from crossing the bridge at the start, they wouldn’t have died.

“Sorry.”

Qu Xi still had many small wounds on her face and body oozing blood, and she was drenched all over, looking wretched and pitiful.

Shen Ke disdainfully got off Qu Xi and snorted coldly. “Enough. That’s all nonsense. Now hurry up and find me a place to bathe. I need to wash up. Seawater is disgusting.”

She leaned close to Shen Ke, took her hand, and said softly, “You just hit me. Does your hand hurt?”

Shen Ke spread her palm, which was pink. “A little painful.”

“By the way, your teammates died. Aren’t you sad?”

Qu Xi shook her head and answered honestly, “Nothing to be sad about. In this apocalypse, living one more day is already a bonus.”

“And they were just ordinary teammates anyway.”

Shen Ke had new thoughts. This Little Ghost was even more indifferent than she’d imagined.

She needed to put more effort into this Little Ghost. Young people changed hearts quickly; who knew when she’d get dumped.

How could the tips be so pink? She wanted… wanted to bite them.

“Don’t dawdle. Hurry up and take them off.”

Qu Xi never imagined that helping someone undress could be such torment.
