Chapter 23: Declaration

Su He truly hadn’t taken He Erlu to heart. After Su Wei had followed her master back, Su He hadn’t discussed the matter with her again. She carefully put the sachet away, storing it together with the Longevity Lock.

She was afraid someone might later ask for the sachet back. If He Erlu and her master ended up together, the sachet’s significance would be far too elevated.

“Your Majesty, He Erlu has a message for me to deliver to you.”

Su He was just about to extinguish the candlelight when she heard this. She looked over somewhat impatiently. “Speak.”

“She hopes that tomorrow, Your Majesty can take her to see the scenery of The Capital and experience the local customs and culture here.”

The Palace Attendant’s voice trembled at the end of her sentence. Yet the little princess had said it with such an innocent face. The attendant was terrified Su He would feel annoyed.

He Erlu had been in The Capital for days now. Nobody would believe she hadn’t wandered around. It was just unclear what she really intended with this move. Could she have truly taken a liking to Su He?

“Gu understands. You may withdraw.”

On the contrary, Su He was very calm, seemingly unsurprised. Upon receiving the reply, the Palace Attendant saw the last bit of candlelight extinguish and slowly retreated.

.

Early the next morning, Su He woke up. Just as she was about to step out of bed, she saw Su Wei sitting up at the same time. She frowned, realizing something. “You didn’t sleep all night?”

“Su Wei?”

Su He sensed something was wrong. She walked up to Su Wei, lifted the woman’s chin, and slowed her speech. “Can you not hear?”

Su Wei was also a bit dazed. She looked blankly at her master for a long while before her eyes widened. She bit her lip in disbelief and spoke softly. “Just a little bit.”

She could only hear a tiny bit of sound, any more… and she couldn’t hear anything at all.

But now, it was no different from being deaf—

Su Wei had already mentally prepared for this day. She never expected that when it truly arrived, she would still panic, still feel helpless.

“Master.”

Su Wei held back her tears. She was a Shadow Guard; she absolutely could not cry, especially in front of Su He.

Su He looked at her and let out a breath. She raised a hand and gently rubbed Su Wei’s head. Her gaze fell casually somewhere as she said softly, “It’s alright. Don’t be afraid. It will get better.”

But Su Wei only grew more nervous, because she couldn’t hear anything at all. She murmured, “Can’t hear anything now… What should I do…”

What should be done?

Su He slightly curved her lips and turned away, leaving without the slightest hesitation.

Since they were going out today, their clothes naturally couldn’t be too ostentatious. Su He and Su Wei both wore black attire. Only He Erlu changed into a blue outfit, her makeup no less exquisite than at yesterday’s banquet.

“Your Majesty.” The moment He Erlu saw Su He, her eyes curved into a smile. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”

Su He revealed a smile. “It is Gu’s fault. I hope the Princess won’t hold it against me.”

He Erlu was magnanimous, quite generously forgiving Su He. She walked up to the woman’s side, trying to stay as close to Su He as possible, looking like they were on the most intimate terms. But her gaze imperceptibly fell on Su Wei behind them, her lowered eyes concealing countless surging emotions.

The streets of The Capital were always bustling. The weather was fine today, and there were many people out. Su He wore a mask, but He Erlu did not. She was flamboyant and passionate, attracting many gazes.

“Oh dear, I’d really like some pastries from over there. Could you buy me a portion?”

He Erlu spoke quickly and with a slight accent. Su Wei hadn’t initially realized she was being addressed. It took her a moment to understand He Erlu’s meaning.

Pastries… Su Wei followed her gaze. That pastry shop was very crowded, with a long queue. She estimated she would have to wait a while.

“Of course.” Su Wei was a subordinate; her duty was to assist her master. “A bit of every kind.”

He Erlu nodded. “Alright, thank you very much.”

She changed her mind as soon as she finished speaking. “Actually, never mind. I’ll go choose them myself. Your Majesty, wait for me a moment. I’ll go with her.”

With that, she prepared to leave. Just as she lifted her foot, she felt resistance at her wrist. He Erlu looked over innocently, her gaze meeting Su He’s directly. The Female Emperor’s eyes were indifferent and fierce, carrying a hint of warning.

He Erlu merely recoiled her shoulders in an appearance of fear, then immediately raised an eyebrow provocatively at Su He.

The expression in Su He’s brows and eyes softened. She released her grip and beckoned to Su Wei with a hooked finger. The Shadow Guard quickly walked to her side, her entire focus landing on her master, not leaving for a moment.

Her hand rested on Su Wei’s shoulder. Glancing sidelong at He Erlu, her hand boldly and wantonly squeezed the back of Su Wei’s neck.

Her thing, even if she didn’t want it anymore, no one else could take it away.

"I do not confess to this crime."

Su Wei was covered in wounds. Her eyes looked vacantly at the Female Emperor before her, repeating over and over that she was innocent.

Su He was the reigning Female Emperor, also known as a notorious mad tyrant. She had raised a batch of Shadow Guards loyal to her, and she did not tolerate betrayal.

Su Wei, her most capable Shadow Guard, was thrown into the dungeon and framed with a crime. Yet Su He did not kill her, instead keeping her by her side, inseparable.

The Shadow Guard's old wounds had not yet healed when she was sent before the Female Emperor. She knelt on the ground, her eyes pleading, and explained: "I have never betrayed you."

But Su He did not believe her, and instead felt a playful urge. Su Wei did not understand why her Master's temperament had changed, dressing her in clothes she had never worn before, taking her out of the palace for amusement, and even forbidding her from grueling training. She wouldn't even let her pour tea or water. For a time, this made the Shadow Guard deeply immersed in the illusion.

It wasn't until Su Wei truly developed feelings and tried to offer her sincere heart that Su He belittled her as utterly worthless.

"You are a Shadow Guard, of lowly status. Has a mere few months made you think you could climb to a high position?"

"Your martial arts were long ago crippled, and your body is riddled with the Gu poison administered over these days—"

Su He lifted Su Wei's chin, and said softly: "You will not have an easy time."

Only then did the Shadow Guard awaken as if from a dream. Her Master had never believed her. It had all been her own delusion.

Su Wei's face was pale. She gave a bitter smile and ultimately said nothing more.

.

The Shadow Guard lay on the bed, her form gaunt. She was tormented daily by the Gu insects, yet refused to drink the antidote Su He offered.

Su Wei turned on her side. Her vision was already blurred, and the vitality she once had was long gone. She smiled weakly and whispered:

"Master, I confess my crimes. Let me go."

A wife-chasing crematorium, melodramatic story.
