Chapter 167: I’ll Support You By Handing Out Flyers Part 12
After a few repetitions, the ghost was also tired. A delicious meal, even a powerful one, wasn’t worth it if it could fight back.
And this person seemed genuinely capable, just strangely unwilling to attack, toying with her like a cat with a mouse.
The ghost said, “Fine, I won’t eat you, I’ll let you go.”
Tao Ning touched the warm keychain in her pocket and shook her head: “No, I’m not leaving.”
The ghost was exasperated: “Are you crazy? I’m letting you go, and you’re refusing!”
Tao Ning said matter-of-factly, “As a weak and helpless human, I should wait for a powerful celestial master to descend from the heavens, riding a colorful cloud, and rescue me.”
Ghost: “???”
What is she talking about?
The blood flowing from the ghost’s eyes intensified, and it shrieked, “What celestial master?!”
Tao Ning pointed behind her, telling the ghost a ghost story: “The one behind you.”
She put away the talisman.
“!”
Despite not having a physical body, the ghost felt a chill and turned around sharply, but it was just the same dead-end alley, the distant streetlights dim, no celestial master in sight.
Having died a gruesome death, it had a terrible temper, and bloody tears streamed from its empty eye sockets: “You tricked me!”
Ghosts didn’t have tears, the blood just condensed resentment, but it was still a terrifying sight.
“You tricked me! I hate liars! You deserve to die!”
The ghost lunged at Tao Ning, its fear overridden by rage, determined to kill her.
A dense, swirling mass of ghostly energy surged towards Tao Ning, powerful enough to consume anyone.
Tao Ning, seemingly panicking, ran towards the end of the alley, her back against the wall, nowhere left to run, and turned around, her eyes fixed on the ghost.
Behind the ghost, a green light pierced through the darkness, the faint sound of students reading disappearing, replaced by the flash of a sword.
The sword appeared so suddenly, cutting through the darkness, illuminating the dimly lit alley.
The ghost didn’t have time to react, the sword piercing through its body, instantly destroying it, not even a final scream.
With a clang, the sword embedded itself in the wall, then gradually disappeared, leaving only a faint mark.
It wasn’t a real sword, but an illusion created by a Sword Talisman, disappearing after destroying its target.
Fu Guanyue hurried into the alley and saw Tao Ning sitting against the wall, her hand covering her forehead, motionless.
Did she faint?
Her heart tightened, and she rushed over, shaking Tao Ning’s shoulder: “Tao Ning? Tao Ning, wake up!”
They had been walking side-by-side, and then Tao Ning suddenly disappeared. Fu Guanyue couldn’t find her, realizing she was trapped in an illusion, no matter how many times she walked towards the alley’s entrance, she couldn’t reach it.
The ghost, having trapped Tao Ning, also wanted to trap her, but Fu Guanyue wasn’t one to be easily defeated, and she quickly broke free from the illusion.
Then she located Tao Ning, broke through the ghost’s barrier, and saw the ghost about to attack, drawing the fastest Sword Talisman of her life and destroying it.
Worried about Tao Ning being affected by the ghostly aura, Fu Guanyue touched her forehead with her fingertip, a faint green light entering: “Tao Ning, wake up.”
Tao Ning, sitting on a rock, her hand on her head, her eyelashes fluttered, and she opened her eyes, her gaze still hazy, looking around in confusion.
Finally, her eyes focused on Fu Guanyue, and she asked, “What happened?”
Fu Guanyue tucked her hair behind her ear: “I should be asking you that, why are you sitting here?”
Tao Ning, still slightly disoriented, then seemed to remember: “I felt a bit dizzy, suddenly very tired, so I sat down to rest, did I fall asleep?”
Having heard of people fainting from the sight of blood, but not from carbon dioxide, Fu Guanyue asked, “Dizzy from carbon dioxide?”
Realizing Fu Guanyue had grown up in the mountains, Tao Ning explained softly, “It means feeling sleepy and dizzy after eating.”
Fu Guanyue crouched down, her long hair cascading down her back, and looked up at Tao Ning, asking cautiously, “Didn’t you notice anything unusual just now?”
Tao Ning removed her hand from her forehead, her eyes slightly watery: “Unusual how?”
Fu Guanyue stared at her, and Tao Ning met her gaze, the darkness of the alley making it difficult to read her expression.
If Fu Guanyue had been even a moment later, the ghost would have reached her, although the protective talisman would have held it off for a while.
But it had been a close call, and Tao Ning hadn’t even noticed anything amiss, she didn’t know what to say.
Fu Guanyue decided not to press further, silently putting away the Memory Cleansing Talisman, she suddenly didn’t want to use it.
Using it would make Tao Ning forget not only tonight’s events but also Fu Guanyue herself, her name, everything.
Like footprints in the snow, vanishing without a trace.
In the past, she would have used it without hesitation.
Tao Ning was still looking at her, her eyes full of trust.
Fu Guanyue shook her head: “Nothing, it’s getting late, let me help you up.”
She stood up and extended her hand.
Tao Ning suddenly pulled her hand back, turning to look at the other end of the alley.
Fu Guanyue also looked over, seeing two figures approaching, carrying something, their eyes lighting up as they saw her.
“Eldest Sister, you’re here!” Fu Luo hurried over, then noticed Tao Ning in the corner, her eyes widening.
Fu Xi glanced at Tao Ning, then at Fu Guanyue’s pale face: “Eldest Sister, we were worried when you didn’t return, so we came looking for you, did something happen?”
Fu Guanyue shook her head: “Nothing, I was just about to leave with my friend.”
They were surprised to hear the word “friend” from Fu Guanyue, glancing at Tao Ning again.
They had assumed she was just a random passerby, but they seemed to know each other.
Could she be the one who had been with Eldest Sister all this time, even eating at that small restaurant?
Tao Ning, however, was staring intently at the object in Fu Xi’s hand.
Fu Xi instinctively hid her hand behind her back, feeling a strange sense of guilt under Tao Ning’s gaze.
Fu Luo, curious about this “friend” of Eldest Sister’s, a rare species, asked, “Are you alright? You look unwell.”
Tao Ning quickly looked away, a flicker of disdain in her eyes, and said softly, “I’m fine.”
The object in Fu Xi’s hand made her eyes hurt, she wanted to snatch it and remake it.
Not only was spiritual energy scarce in this era, but even spiritual artifacts were so poorly made, truly a decline.
Crude and shoddy, in Tao Ning’s eyes, it was practically garbage.
But then again, with ghost control considered a mainstream technique, it wasn’t surprising that artifact refining had declined to such an extent, perhaps even forgotten.
Perhaps no one remembered the past anymore.
Fu Guanyue suspected Tao Ning hadn’t fainted from drowsiness, but from the ghost’s attack: “Where do you live? I’ll give you a ride, it’s not safe for you to go back alone in this condition.”
She reached out and helped Tao Ning up, the rock she had been sitting on a foothold used by students climbing over the wall, now abandoned after the wall’s renovation.
Tao Ning suddenly grabbed Fu Guanyue’s hand, her body leaning back slightly, as if seeking protection.
Fu Guanyue, unable to pull her hand back, looked at her, her amber eyes meeting Tao Ning’s, and she paused.
They say beauty is enhanced in the lamplight, and the nearby streetlight, casting a soft glow on Tao Ning’s face, made her slightly red-rimmed eyes even more striking, a captivating gaze.
Tao Ning, realizing her actions were inappropriate, slowly released Fu Guanyue’s hand, her silence speaking volumes.
Fu Xi and Fu Luo: “?”
Why is she acting like she’s been bullied? No one said anything to her.
Tao Ning whispered, “I… I don’t want to go back tonight, take me somewhere else.”
Fu Guanyue’s heart stirred: “You know?”
Tao Ning chuckled softly, her tone indifferent: “Know what?”
The same rhetorical question, filled with self-deprecation.
She hadn’t been able to hear or see clearly before, but now she did.
Fu Guanyue knew that Tao Ning was aware of what had just happened, and she had even pretended not to be scared.
Someone with her constitution must have encountered such things before, her earlier denial probably out of a desire for self-preservation, not wanting to reveal her vulnerability.
But now, with Fu Guanyue offering her a ride, her suppressed fear surfaced, and she was terrified, unable to do anything.
Fu Guanyue’s heart softened, and she asked, “Where do you want to go?”
The night was still young, where would she go?
Tao Ning thought for a moment, a few strands of hair falling around her face, making her look even more fragile: “Somewhere crowded, I’ll stay at a hotel tonight.”
The car parked near No. 12 High School finally started, moving slowly.
Fu Xi drove, heading towards the nearest hotel.
Fu Luo sat in the passenger seat, seemingly looking straight ahead, but constantly glancing at the rearview mirror.
The streetlights outside, their reflections flickering in the car, illuminated Tao Ning’s hand, resting between them, her skin smooth and pale.
Fu Guanyue, her eyes lowered, seemed to be deep in thought, the car silent, an unspoken tension in the air.
As the car moved forward, a dark shadow suddenly darted out from the sidewalk, and Fu Xi slammed on the brakes, the two in the back jolted, the seatbelts restraining them.
Tao Ning, instinctively reaching out for support, grabbed Fu Guanyue’s hand, her touch light.
Although she quickly retracted her hand, the warmth seemed to linger on Fu Guanyue’s skin.
Fu Guanyue looked down at her hand.
Fu Xi, apologetic, said, “Sorry, a stray dog suddenly ran across the road, Eldest Sister, are you alright?”
Fu Guanyue looked away from her hand, shaking her head slowly: “I’m fine.”
A few minutes later, Fu Xi parked the car in front of a hotel: “We’re here.”
The car fell silent, Fu Guanyue’s gaze fixed on Tao Ning.
“Thank you, I’ll be going now.” The last sentence was directed at Fu Guanyue, and Tao Ning unbuckled her seatbelt, turning to open the door.
But she didn’t leave, her hand caught by another.
Fu Guanyue, her hand, usually holding a brush, now gripping Tao Ning’s wrist, her fingers tightening, pulling her back.
Tao Ning turned around in surprise. Fu Guanyue didn’t know why, but she had instinctively reached out when Tao Ning was about to leave, unsure what this feeling was.
She just acted on impulse.
She heard herself say calmly, “This hotel isn’t suitable.”
The first sentence out, the rest came easily, and Fu Guanyue wasn’t lying: “Last year, someone was murdered and dismembered here, and the specialist hired by the hotel was a charlatan, he didn’t cleanse the place properly, you can’t stay here.”
Fu Luo silently covered her face, wondering why her sister always told ghost stories, couldn’t she say something else?
It would scare people.
She should be more tactful with her friend, or she might scare her away.
Tao Ning’s reaction, however, was unexpected. She did look shocked, shrinking back slightly: “That’s terrifying, should I find another hotel then?”
Fu Guanyue nodded seriously: “It’s a very scary story. If you’re not comfortable staying anywhere else, my house is very safe.”
Tao Ning paused, then realized what she meant, tilting her head slightly: “Hmm?”
Fu Guanyue turned to Fu Xi: “Turn around, we’re going to Hengshan Villa.”
Fu Xi, her expression serious and focused, drove, while Fu Luo, beside her, typed rapidly on her phone, her fingers a blur.
Her excited expression was evident.
Fu Luo was indeed excited, unable to contain her grin, risking being struck by Fu Guanyue’s lightning talismans, she had to share this news.
Even if she was struck by lightning, it would be worth it!
At 9:30 PM, a new message appeared in the group chat without Fu Guanyue.
Useless Alliance (18)
NotLuooo: [Guys, guys, breaking news, breaking news!]
NotLuooo: [Don’t worry, this isn’t a prank.]
The group chat was silent, it was cultivation time, no one was online.
NotLuooo: [Eldest Sister invited someone to stay the night at her house! Not even my sister and I have received such treatment (crying rivers)]
EightArms: [?]
Instantly, the chat was flooded with question marks.
[???]
[Really? Not another prank?]
[I’m suspicious, but intrigued.]
[Really? I don’t believe it.]
[Fu Luo, does Eldest Sister know you’re using her as bait?]
And another message: [So you’re all on your phones? We agreed not to use them tonight, Grandmother is checking tomorrow!]
[Speaking of which, my talisman failed again!]
NotLuooo: [Why would I lie? Eldest Sister is right here in the back seat.]
[Pics or it didn’t happen.]
[Pics or it didn’t happen +1]
[…]
NotLuooo: [Fine, fine, I’ll take a picture.]
Fu Luo raised her phone, flipping the camera, pretending to fix her hair, actually trying to take a sneaky photo.
Just as she found the perfect angle, a pair of eyes looked directly at the camera, and Fu Luo was startled.
Fu Guanyue’s voice was cold: “Fu Luo, are you bored?”
Fu Luo was horrified: “!!!”
