Chapter 9 p2
Top floor of Jinbiao Mingting.
The salad the new assistant, Su Wan, had bought had three grams too much salt.
Meng Jiang put away her phone and glanced at the young girl. The latter was a little reserved, hiding the hand holding the camera behind her back.
Meng Jiang had seen that silver-white camera this morning. She hadn’t said anything to give her a chance.
The assistant’s contract stated that she was not allowed to disclose any of the artist’s whereabouts or private photos.
But after only one day on the job, the new assistant had already made two suspicious moves.
The pre-job training was clearly inadequate, but Chen Cheng couldn’t be blamed. It was a rush, and this was the third assistant this week.
Normally, Meng Jiang would have given her a chance on the first day and observed her for a few more days before deciding whether to keep her. But she wasn’t in a good mood right now.
She turned and walked to the water dispenser, poured a glass of water.
When she returned to the dining table, Meng Jiang had a measuring cup in her right hand.
She measured out one milliliter of water, confirmed that the measurement was accurate, and then poured it into the vegetable salad to dilute the salt.
Seeing this, Su Wan suddenly remembered that an hour ago, Meng Jiang had given her a list of lunch recipes, with a specific requirement for the amount of salt.
But at that time, she was too busy trying to take a picture of Meng Jiang without makeup and didn’t remember how many grams her boss had said. So she just gave the chef a random number, thinking Meng Jiang wouldn’t notice. But…
Her eyes turned red, and Su Wan stammered, “Sister, it’s all my fault. I remembered the wrong amount just now. You can dock my pay…”
Meng Jiang glanced at her and smiled. “It’s okay. You don’t have to come back tomorrow.”
After Su Wan left, Meng Jiang’s mood didn’t improve. She opened a bottle of Lafite from the wine cabinet.
She walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and took a big gulp.
Just then, the phone rang several times.
“You logged into your alt Weibo account?”
“And you used the logo of the luxury lipstick brand you endorse as your profile picture?”
The caller was Chen Cheng. Meng Jiang tapped the bottle and said honestly, “Not only did I log into my alt account, but I also used my luxury lipstick profile picture to vote for a young author who was having relationship problems.”
“Miss Meng.”
“Best Actress Meng.”
“Goddess Meng…”
Chen Cheng wished she could fly back from Venice and pull Meng Jiang’s ear. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing?”
“I do,” Meng Jiang said. “Sister Chen, do you know who she is?”
“Who?” Hearing Meng Jiang’s tone, Chen Cheng suddenly had a bad feeling.
“Qi Sijia,” Meng Jiang said.
“Qi Qi Qi…” Chen Cheng’s mouth was a little clumsy. “Your…”
Meng Jiang said, “Miss Q.”
Chen Cheng was silent for a long time on the other end, then took a breath and said, “I remember you had a five-year no-dating agreement with President Shen…”
Meng Jiang held the wine bottle, and a drop of wine spilled out, dripping onto the earth-toned plush carpet.
“That woman Shen Tunan, didn’t I arrange for her to go dig coal in Italy a while ago? Why bring her up?” Meng Jiang sneered, rolled up the carpet, and planned to replace it tomorrow.
Her voice was naturally a mature, older sister type, with a hint of sweetness in its sexiness. “There are still two months left until my five-year contract with Shen Tunan expires. I’ve given her enough from the Meng family over the years to repay the favor.”
Of course, Chen Cheng knew where Meng Jiang’s “enough” was, but Shen Tunan didn’t seem like a pushover.
“Aren’t you afraid?”
Meng Jiang: “Do I need to be?”
Chen Cheng was speechless. She remembered what Meng Jiang had said when she was drunk last year: “What do you see in her? Status, position, money?”
“Last time you said she’s had a string of girlfriends for five years, she’s clearly a player. And you haven’t seen each other in so many years. It’s normal for someone who’s a homebody to gain weight, get acne, and become unrecognizable. As for you going back to her, what if she uses her alt account to get attached to you or create a scandal?”
Meng Jiang had been drinking and was a little annoyed at Chen Cheng for saying that about her. She found an old picture of Qi Sijia in her photo album and sent it over.
After a long time, Chen Cheng murmured, “She has a certain charm… no wonder… no wonder she can be a player.”
For Chen Cheng to say she had a certain charm, there was no need to describe her looks further.
The whole world knew, only Qi Sijia herself didn’t.
Meng Jiang squinted, looking at the city lights outside, thinking about what she had done over the years.
Actually, she didn’t know what she was doing herself.
Breaking up and getting back together. From the difficulty of adding her on WeChat today, she felt that the ice cube Qi Sijia wouldn’t agree.
The image of Qi Sijia breaking up with the resentful Shu Ran yesterday flashed in her mind, and she was still a little upset.
Suddenly, she found it amusing.
After so many years, she hadn’t expected Qi Sijia to have changed at all. Her views on love were stubborn, conservative to the point of being a neat freak.
She adhered to the rules of a top in a relationship, quickly detached herself after a breakup, and would never look back.
For five years, she had been dumped so many times that she was known as a player, but she had never even held hands with her exes. Thinking about Qi Sijia’s so-called exes, they were much more pitiful than her current situation.
Meng Jiang amused herself by thinking that, all things considered, she hadn’t lost out. At least she didn’t have to worry about Miss Qi being truly liked by someone else or being polluted.
After all, only she could see the good in such a boring woman.
Her mood improved a little. Meng Jiang changed the subject. “I fired the new assistant you hired.”
Chen Cheng sighed in frustration. “What did she do wrong this time?”
“Taking pictures of me.”
“Finding another one on short notice might lead to the same problem,” Chen Cheng said solemnly.
Meng Jiang had a regular assistant, but she was on leave. Chen Cheng was on vacation and couldn’t personally oversee the hiring process, so she didn’t dare to casually hand over the responsibility of hiring Meng Jiang’s personal assistant to an agency.
If the pre-job training was inadequate, there would be many problems with the assistants.
“I’ll take care of myself for now,” Meng Jiang was in a semi-vacation state recently. She had only participated in Lan Tai’s weekly variety show. Her personal driver was still there, so she could ask him for help with many things.
Eating was even simpler. She could solve it with takeout. She didn’t need an assistant around all the time.
Sister Chen was still worried. “Can you handle it?”
“Yes.”
After the start of winter, the weather got colder every day. Although it hadn’t started snowing yet, the temperature difference between morning and evening was about ten degrees.
Qi Sijia hadn’t been out at six in the morning for a long time.
The next day, as she came down the stairs from the fifth floor, a cold draft blew in her face, unexpectedly loosening her ponytail.
The hair tie fell into the stairwell, and her long hair came undone. Qi Sijia searched for it for a while.
When she looked down, she felt that the biting wind could rip the mask off her face at any moment.
Almost subconsciously, she turned her backpack to the front. She pulled out a blue and white scarf, hung it around her neck, wrapped it twice, and tucked her ears, cheeks, and hair into the soft knitted fabric. Only then did she feel a little better.
The stairwell was old, and the ground was not very clean.
But since it was about to be demolished, Qi Sijia didn’t bother with it.
This property in the development zone had been in Qi Sijia’s name for several years. She had even hired people to do repairs before.
But the five small buildings in the old community still looked dilapidated no matter how they were maintained.
Elevators couldn’t be installed, and most of the hardware facilities were damaged.
And because the rent was cheap, there were a lot of people living there. Many of the common areas were heavily worn and even more dilapidated.
It wasn’t until the demolition plan was announced six months ago that the tenants who could move out gradually left, and many houses became deserted.
The damage was a little better, but since it was going to be demolished, there was no need for repairs.
The sanitation had always been done by sanitation workers, but in the last month, the tenants had been moving frequently, so it was inevitable that the stairwell was not clean. As she walked down, she stepped on several pieces of discarded plastic tape used for moving, which stuck to her feet. Qi Sijia had to find a hidden corner near the entrance of the building, squat down, and peel the tape off the bottom of her shoes.
“Zhang Defa, did you hear? The development zone is going to be demolished. The landlord wants us to move out quickly.”
Two thin middle-aged men walked towards her, each wearing a yellow safety helmet.
They seemed to have just gotten off work. Their eye bags were sagging, and they were yawning constantly. The taller man took a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and handed it to the shorter man.
The other man put the cigarette in his mouth and took a deep drag. “Who would stay here if they could move?”
The taller man sighed and nodded. The morning light illuminated the weathered lines on his face. “Xiao Lian’s mother asked a familiar auntie a few days ago. This is the only two-bedroom apartment for rent.”
The taller man held up ten fingers. “At least a thousand.”
“Whoa, they might as well rob us.”
The two middle-aged men looked at each other and saw the hardship and pressure of life in each other’s eyes. When they reached the stairwell, the shorter man looked at the home he had lived in for many years, took out his cigarette, and muttered to himself, “It would be great if the landlord could give us until the end of the year. Where are we going to find a rental for three hundred yuan a month before the new year?”
The taller man didn’t reply, looking sullen.
The two of them smoked one cigarette after another. The streetlights were dim, and they were both preoccupied with their thoughts as they walked past Qi Sijia.
They didn’t spare her a glance from beginning to end.
Qi Sijia’s black mask and protective glasses made her look extremely strange. After the two men had walked away, Qi Sijia thought for a moment and sent a text message, asking Qi Jun what was going on with the development zone.
An hour later, Qi Jun’s assistant replied about the demolition of the development zone: [There’s nothing we can do.]
