Chapter 112: Phone Call
Xia Qian Ge looked up and saw the boy’s tall and straight back disappearing into the afterglow of the setting sun. The phone in her palm was restless. The caller seemed to be in a hurry, but Xia Qian Ge didn’t care. Her gaze was still fixed on the boy, her dark eyes sinister, like a soul-devouring black mist rolling in the woods at midnight. He had gone to get ice for her ankle. He wasn’t far, but he wouldn’t be back so soon either.
Lin Siyi and her boyfriend were not there either. They had gotten off the Ferris wheel first and had sent a message saying they wanted to ride the roller coaster again and had left. Xia Qian Ge didn’t let Su Yu tell Lin Siyi and the others that she was injured, saying that she didn’t want them to worry, and that it would be fine to tell them after they had had their fun.
Now she was alone, sitting in the shadows, her wound still aching. Xia Qian Ge’s lips curved into a dark smile. She answered the phone. The other party’s first words were a question, her tone rushed, with a hint of a command.
“Xiao Yu! Where are you? Tell me quickly. I’m coming to find you now. I’ll pick you up for dinner tonight.”
Xia Qian Ge listened to the gentle tone, and the twisted violence in her eyes grew stronger. She thought to herself, this old woman is so disgusting. She’s clearly a cold and aloof woman at heart, yet she still speaks in such a tone? Acting young? She’s so old and shameless. Xiao Yu… what right does she have to call him that? I really want to tear her mouth and sew it shut with a steel needle, so that she can never say those two words again in her life.
“Why aren’t you speaking? Do you know how worried I am…”
Xia Qian Ge deliberately kept Gu Zhi waiting for a while before she suddenly spoke, her tone gentle, full of respect for her elders, without a hint of anger.
“Hello, Teacher Gu. Is there something important?”
“You! You’re Xia Qian Ge? Why is Xiao Yu’s phone in your hands… where is he?”
Gu Zhi was obviously stunned for a moment. She had indeed heard a soft whimper in the previous phone call. It was a girl’s voice. But what she couldn’t accept the most was that the obedient younger brother had just hung up the phone on her?
The girl’s voice sounded as if it were right next to the boy’s ear, her voice as soft and alluring as a bitch in a red-light district, spreading her legs for a man, so disgusting, full of seduction, and even a little… showing off?
She forced herself to be calm, but she was going crazy with anxiety. She knew she had a morbid psychological cleanliness, but when it came to the boy, it would grow endlessly. Even a tiny, invisible drop of ink on a white sheet of paper would make the violence in her bones erupt. She was eager to see the boy… but she was also afraid that if she really saw him, she wouldn’t be able to resist tearing up that ink-stained white sheet of paper.
“You mean Xiao Yu…”
Xia Qian Ge never called Su Yu that way, although she had called him that countless times in her heart. They were just friends because of their high school friendship, which was not bad… but such an intimate address would definitely cause a misunderstanding.
But Xia Qian Ge deliberately called him that in front of Gu Zhi, as if she were just unintentionally using Gu Zhi’s address. But it was as if she were deliberately saying it for Gu Zhi to hear. She wanted to make that old woman confused. The more she wanted to figure it out, the more anxious she would become. She wanted to splash a bucket of blood-red paint in a clean room, making the whole room a mess.
The old woman would definitely go crazy…
Xia Qian Ge smiled sinisterly in the shadows, her dark eyes sparkling with an excited yet violent light. She felt that she was really bad. If she was looked down upon, she would find a way to get revenge. Even if such revenge was insignificant, she would still do it, like a naughty child in the neighborhood.
“My phone is out of battery. He gave me his phone so I could stay in touch with my friends. And then… he went to get me some ice.” Xia Qian Ge deliberately broke the sentence apart. The more anxious the old woman was, the happier she was. She was a complete villain, and she had always been so vengeful. That was her thing… no one could touch it, or she would definitely bite a piece of flesh off the other party.
Gu Zhi was indeed furious. A torrent of violent and anxious flames burned her heart. Her flesh and blood seemed to have turned into flying ashes, carrying a terrifying, violent desire that almost crushed the phone. At the peak of her anger, she calmed down. She no longer cared whether this woman was making trouble or not. All she wanted now was to hear Su Yu’s voice. She squeezed out a gentle voice from between her teeth again, the stormy waves all hidden under the deep, calm surface of the sea.
“Ice? Can you tell me what happened?”
“Yes, Xiao Yu… oh no, Su Yu bought ice to put on my wound. I accidentally fell and hurt myself.”
“I see. But you shouldn’t be out alone, right? Shouldn’t you have friends?”
“Mm-hmm, I have friends.” Xia Qian Ge’s tone was obedient. She answered whatever Gu Zhi asked, so that no one could detect any trickery. “But when you first called, teacher… it was just the two of us. At that time we were…”
Xia Qian Ge deliberately paused again. She heard the other end of the phone take a quick breath, and the curve of her lips widened. She said one by one, her small tongue gently falling from the roof of her mouth to her teeth, clearly enunciating, “The—Fer—ris—wheel.”
She heard no reply from the other end. But from such a great distance, she could almost hear the phone wailing as it was about to be crushed by a huge force. She continued, her tone deliberately quickened, as if she were afraid Gu Zhi would misunderstand something. But to some people’s ears, it was just showing off.
“It’s not what you think, teacher. Maybe Su Yu was just a little anxious because he was worried that my injury was serious. He didn’t mean to hang up on you. Teacher, you…” Xia Qian Ge smiled coldly. If she could, she really wanted to see what the old woman’s expression was like at this moment, and how much of the cold and arrogant look she had in the mall that day remained.
“Teacher, please don’t be angry.”
“How could I be… of course, your health is more important, classmate Qian Ge. Is it serious?” Gu Zhi just smiled and considerately asked about Xia Qian Ge’s injury. “Do you want me to drive you to the hospital?”
Xia Qian Ge politely declined. She smiled sweetly, and her pleasant voice fell upon Gu Zhi’s ears. “That won’t be necessary, teacher. Su Yu will take me later. Thank you for your concern.”
“Alright then, I won’t disturb you. When Xiao Yu comes back, just ask him to call me back.”
“Mm-hmm, okay. I will.”
Gu Zhi on the other end of the phone listened to the girl’s obedient answers. She sat alone in the large villa, the sunset, which was gradually turning a deep color, shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows. She extended her long, slender, and powerful fingers and examined them silently. The crystal-clear nails, painted with a bright red polish, seemed to be bleeding in the dark red sunset. Her anger made her completely calm, her voice as flat as a robot’s.
“Then… goodbye?”
“Yeah, goodbye, teacher.”
…
Xia Qian Ge hung up the phone and looked up at the boy who was running towards her in the distance. She put down her phone and gently rubbed her twisted features, relaxing her stiff muscles, so that the boy wouldn’t see her ugly side.
By the time the boy got close, she had put on her frail and soft appearance again. She sat alone in the shade of the awning. The late autumn wind was cold, blowing her messy hair. She hugged her arms and curled up, looking very pitiful.
