Chapter 2
Qin Cong’an’s expression was dark. After a moment of silence, she asked in a low voice, “And coming to find me will help you sleep?”
Xu Ling shook her head, not knowing what to say. She knew it was too abrupt to come looking for her. She hadn’t even thought about what she would do once she found her; she just wanted to see her.
The atmosphere suddenly turned strange.
Xu Ling’s gaze fell on the collar of Qin Cong’an’s bathrobe—or more accurately, the sliver of skin revealed there. She remembered how Qin Cong’an had looked in the tank top that afternoon, that incredible figure hidden beneath this single layer of soft fabric.
Xu Ling swallowed unconsciously and suddenly asked her, “It must be annoying that the filming schedule was delayed, right?”
“Mhm.” It was impossible not to be.
“I think we have an intimate scene later on.”
“…So?”
“So, to avoid delaying our progress later, should we… try it out first?” Xu Ling herself found the idea absurd, but with the alcohol buzzing in her system, the words didn’t seem entirely unreasonable. Even though she’s straight, we’re just doing this for the movie.
Qin Cong’an stared at her, silent, just staring.
Xu Ling forced herself to meet her gaze without looking away, trying to appear as righteous as possible. “I’m serious. Want to give it a try? To avoid spending ages trying to get into character when the time comes… Besides, we have nothing to do tonight anyway.”
Qin Cong’an still didn’t speak.
Xu Ling finally broke under her gaze and lowered her head, making one last desperate attempt.
“It’s a sacrifice for art, isn’t it? As an experienced actress, maybe you don’t need this, but I do. Just think of it as… doing me a favor. And helping me is really helping yourself…”
As Xu Ling continued to ramble, the woman in front of her took two steps forward. She saw their toes were now almost touching.
Xu Ling looked up and instantly felt as if she had fallen into a spider’s web, ensnared by her gaze.
“You have a point.” Qin Cong’an raised a hand and caressed her face. “But you haven’t showered, have you? You reek of alcohol. I don’t like it.”
“…” Xu Ling was stunned. Am I dreaming? Did she… agree!?
“You don’t want to? Fine. We can wash up after we try.”
Xu Ling was dumbfounded. Wait, is Qin Cong’an really this dedicated to her craft? Although Xu Ling had always known she was a professional actress, had she really been persuaded by that argument?
Her body went rigid. The mouth that had just been spouting nonsense about art was now unable to utter a single word.
But Qin Cong’an had already pressed closer, pinning her against the window. She leaned in and whispered in her ear, “But how should we try? Where do we start? A kiss?”
Xu Ling remained dazed for a long time, only managing to squeeze a sound from her throat, though she had no idea what it meant.
Qin Cong’an’s thumb and forefinger gripped her chin. Their lips met—the taste of grapefruit toothpaste mingling with the strong scent of alcohol.
Soft. It’s so soft. The lips of the person she had adored for so long were pressed against her own. Xu Ling’s mind went blank. Her breathing grew ragged, and her heart felt like it was about to pound out of her chest.
Xu Ling truly wasn’t sure if this was reality or a dream. Well… let’s just say it’s a dream. And if it’s a dream, I can do anything I want, right?
On that sticky, rainy night, sweat drenched their bodies. Stifled sighs only intensified the sweltering air.
Xu Ling wanted to believe it was all a dream, but the further they went, the clearer her consciousness became. Qin Cong’an’s body was pressed against hers, her hands feeling its deepest warmth. God, I could just die holding her like this.
Xu Ling lost count of how many times she came, or when she finally fell asleep.
…
Xu Ling felt like she couldn’t breathe. She gasped for air and opened her eyes to find someone pinching her nose. Annoyed, she looked up and saw Qin Cong’an’s face, a sight that shocked her into full consciousness.
“Director Chang is looking for you.”
Xu Ling was startled. “What time is it?”
“Eight-twenty.”
Aahhh, I’m so screwed! We were supposed to leave at eight today!
Xu Ling immediately leaped out of bed. Her body felt incredibly uncomfortable, numb and sore all over, and she nearly lost her balance. But she was already late and had no time to worry about it. She stumbled to the door.
She opened it, peeked outside, and seeing the hallway was empty, ran back to her own room.
The moment she opened her door, she saw her manager, Yi Huai, on the phone, glaring at her.
“She just opened the door. Sorry, we’ll be down in ten minutes,” Yi Huai said into the phone before hanging up.
Before Yi Huai could scold her, Xu Ling quickly said, “I’m sorry,” and rushed into the bathroom.
“Remember, you only have ten minutes,” Yi Huai said before waiting outside. But in less than three minutes, Xu Ling was out.
Xu Ling was incredibly fast at getting ready, a skill honed during her modeling days. But it didn’t mean much now; she was already late.
The two went downstairs together. In the elevator, Yi Huai asked with a cold expression, “Where did you go? You left your phone in your room, I couldn’t find you at all.”
“…” Xu Ling didn’t know how to answer. Could she tell the truth? That she had been sleeping with Qin Cong’an in her room all night? That would be insane.
But she couldn’t think of any other excuse for where she could have been.
Yi Huai glanced at the crestfallen Xu Ling and said, “Were you in someone else’s room?”
Xu Ling remained silent.
Yi Huai’s heel tapped impatiently on the floor. “Later, just say you overslept. That you didn’t hear my calls or my knocking. Apologize properly. As for where you were last night, we’ll talk about that privately when we have time. And another thing, this will not happen again.”
Xu Ling promised, “It absolutely won’t.”
The moment she saw Chang Ning and Liang He, Xu Ling immediately groveled and apologized.
Chang Ning looked displeased but didn’t say much, only remarking, “Focus on the shoot today. Don’t delay our progress.”
“I know, I definitely won’t,” Xu Ling guaranteed.
This morning’s scene was again Jian Yu searching for Wen Xi, which required her to run constantly.
Her legs were already sore from running so much yesterday, and after last night’s… activities, Xu Ling’s legs felt like they were about to give out.
But luckily, Jian Yu was also supposed to be in a state of utter exhaustion, pushing herself to the limit to find Wen Xi. Xu Ling’s current condition actually fit the character perfectly.
During a break, she sat on a small stool, dazed.
Qin Cong’an didn’t come to watch Chang Ning direct today.
But Xu Ling couldn’t get her out of her mind—the line of her neck when she tilted her head back, her beautiful collarbones, the faint sound from her throat when she took a deep breath, the way she frowned while gripping Xu Ling’s hair…
Xu Ling had drunk so much, she thought she wouldn’t remember things so clearly. But to her surprise, she could replay those moments perfectly in her mind.
And now that she thought about it carefully, it seemed like Qin Cong’an hadn’t been resistant to sleeping with her at all. Is she really straight? Could she be bi?
Xu Ling had felt it intensely. It didn’t matter what Qin Cong’an did; the moment she touched her, Xu Ling would lose control.
What about Qin Cong’an? Xu Ling wasn’t sure. She was worried she hadn’t performed well. Although she had replayed it in her head a thousand times, it was still her first actual experience.
A thought suddenly popped into her head.
I wonder how I compare to her boyfriend.
The moment she thought of Xie Jing, Xu Ling nearly ground her teeth to dust.
Wait. It suddenly dawned on her. Does this mean… I’m the other woman?
No, no?? Wait a minute??
“Jian Yu, get ready to shoot!” Liang He called out from the side.
Xu Ling remained frozen in place, her mind reeling from the shock of this realization, unable to process it.
“Xu Ling!” someone shouted, louder this time.
Only then did Xu Ling snap back to reality and run over.
Chang Ning frowned at her. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Sorry, sorry.”
She seemed to be in a terrible state, but once filming began, everything went relatively smoothly.
Xu Ling could now fully empathize with Jian Yu’s feelings.
After the movie wrapped, she wouldn’t be able to find Qin Cong’an anymore, just like Jian Yu couldn’t find Wen Xi.
“Cut!” Chang Ning shouted, a little excited. “That was a great take.”
Chang Ning was very unhappy with Xu Ling’s behavior today, but she was quite satisfied with the resulting footage. It had somewhat exceeded her expectations.
Casting Xu Ling for this film had been a bit of a risk.
Xu Ling had only played a few supporting roles before. Her performances were decent, but the characters were all quite similar—glamorous A-list celebrities. She had the aura for it, so it was basically playing herself.
The role of Jian Yu, however, was a challenge, and Xu Ling, with her modeling background, had no foundational training in acting.
It was by chance that Chang Ning had seen a photo of Qin Cong’an and Xu Ling together at an event. The image struck a chord with her, and that’s when she thought of casting her.
In the beginning, Xu Ling did have significant problems. She wasn’t as professional as Qin Cong’an and would often break character.
But over the past half-month, she had improved a lot. A few of the expressions captured today had even surpassed expectations, achieving exactly what Chang Ning wanted.
It was as if, in that moment, she had truly become Jian Yu, truly searching for Wen Xi.
Xu Ling had the afternoon off and could rest. She returned to the hotel and collapsed onto the bed without even showering.
When she woke up, the sky outside was already growing dark.
Tonight, they had to shoot the chase scene again, another exhausting sequence.
Besides the relationship between the two protagonists, this film also placed great emphasis on its action sequences. Before filming officially began, both actresses underwent action training. However, they had trained separately and had never practiced together.
When she went down later, they would have to go through rehearsals to coordinate everything.
Xu Ling sat up and gazed at the darkening sky outside. The thought of seeing Qin Cong’an later made her hands and legs tremble uncontrollably.
I’m screwed. What do I do?
It was all the alcohol’s fault. It had made her propose such a ridiculous thing. Xu Ling buried her face in her hands and pulled at her hair, feeling like she could just die.
But wait, Qin Cong’an didn’t push me away.
Far from pushing her away, she was the one who kissed her first.
So she’s at fault too. I’m the other woman, yes, but so what? Qin Cong’an allowed it.
No, no, no, this isn’t about being the other woman or not. This is a sacrifice for art. That’s right, it’s just to ensure the film shoots smoothly.
Besides, Xu Ling thought, she absolutely could not let on that she knew about Qin Cong’an’s boyfriend. It was true that Qin Cong’an and Xie Jing’s relationship was an open secret in the industry, but she had just transitioned into this field. It would be perfectly normal for her not to know, right?
That’s right, totally normal!
Xu Ling frantically brainwashed herself until she had calmed down, just a little.
Yi Huai’s call came through. This time, Xu Ling answered instantly, said “Okay,” and left her room.
She stepped into the elevator. Just as the doors were about to close, someone outside pressed the button, and they slowly slid open again.
Standing outside were Qin Cong’an and her assistant, Lin Xinnuo. They both walked in.
Lin Xinnuo greeted her energetically, “Sister Ling!”
Xu Ling nodded, instinctively glancing at Qin Cong’an, only to find her already looking back. Her knees involuntarily went weak.
