Chapter 8
The two were always discussing how to leverage their individual strengths to make one plus one greater than two. Wen Xi often said that if she and Jian Yu couldn’t achieve an effect greater than two, then there was no need for them to work together on missions.
Jian Yu asked, “Am I a burden to you?”
Wen Xi: “Yes.”
Jian Yu whined, “Don’t say that. See? Haven’t I been doing a great job? And I even saved you once. If it weren’t for me, you might be dead.”
Wen Xi pushed away the large person who was blocking her air. “Less talk, more training.”
Filming progressed smoothly.
Outside of the official shoots, Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an continued to learn knife skills from their instructor. They had trained before, but there was always more to learn.
The instructor brought out butterfly knives for them to play with.
Although they wouldn’t be used in the film, it was still fun to play with them. Xu Ling was very interested because they looked cool.
Qin Cong’an had been in action films before and had some training foundation, so she could do some simple moves with the butterfly knife.
Xu Ling watched her play with the knife, her face cold and expressionless, and couldn’t tear her eyes away. Her gaze was filled with adoration.
The instructor noticed and teased, “What’s this? Fallen in love?”
“Huh?” Xu Ling realized she hadn’t controlled her expression. She snapped back to reality and gave a couple of awkward laughs.
The instructor continued to laugh. “It’s normal. Little Qin is so handsome, who wouldn’t be moved?”
Xu Ling continued to laugh awkwardly.
If she didn’t have feelings for Qin Cong’an, she might have been able to joke along calmly.
But she really was moved!!
Instead, she could only try to hide it, though she wasn’t sure if she was doing a good job…
Xu Ling was called to change her clothes. She quickly ran off. When she returned, she saw Qin Cong’an sitting and resting, no longer playing with the knife. Only then did she relax and start learning how to use the butterfly knife.
The butterfly knife was relatively easy to get the hang of, and some of the simple yet flashy moves weren’t difficult to learn.
But Xu Ling kept glancing at Qin Cong’an, a little distracted. It was a good thing the blade was wrapped in tape; otherwise, after a few sets of moves, her hands would have been sliced open.
Today was a day off.
Sharpening the axe doesn’t delay the work of chopping wood. Everyone was tired and needed to recharge to continue working effectively.
Liang He suggested, “I heard there’s a famous lesbian bar in Mist City. Want to go together?”
Chang Ning thought it was a good idea. Although Jian Yu and Wen Xi were not the type of people to appear in such a place, it would still be good to check it out.
Liang He rallied people to go together and found Xu Ling. “Chang Ning and I are planning to go to a lesbian bar. Want to come? It might help you find some inspiration for the upcoming emotional scenes.”
“…Huh?” Xu Ling thought to herself, What inspiration do I need to find? Just having Qin Cong’an stand there is enough inspiration for me.
“Come on,” Liang He urged. “You can observe what women who are truly into women are like.”
Xu Ling started to laugh awkwardly again. Is it possible that if I wanted to observe, I could just look in a mirror?
But she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
I don’t like Qin Cong’an. I don’t like women either. To play Jian Yu well, I need to find inspiration. She nodded and asked, “Is Sister An going?”
“Forget about her. If she went, wouldn’t she turn the bar upside down? Besides, she’s experienced enough, she doesn’t need to go.”
Xu Ling’s eyes instantly went blank. “Experienced… enough?”
Liang He looked at her, completely baffled. “In acting.”
“Oh, oh, oh…” Xu Ling was scared to death.
Liang He also realized what she was thinking and laughed. “What kind of experience did you think I meant? Let me tell you, although a lot of lesbians online are crazy about her, she…”
“Aaaahhhh!” Xu Ling suddenly interrupted her.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”
“My stomach suddenly hurts so much!” Xu Ling clutched her stomach and ran off.
She absolutely could not hear anyone talk about her having a boyfriend. Otherwise, how could she pretend not to know?
Damn it.
Xu Ling felt a little like crying in the restroom.
Why? Why did she have to like Qin Cong’an of all people, and why did she have to respond to her fantasies?
Yes, they were both very immoral, but Qin Cong’an seemed to think nothing of it, which made her feel even more like she was breaking down.
Xu Ling had thought that if she stayed in the restroom a little longer, Director Liang and the others would leave without her, but they were still waiting.
She had no choice but to get in the car and go with them to the famous lesbian bar.
Xu Ling had been to a few local lesbian bars abroad with her model friends before, but it was just dancing and drinking.
When foreign beauties flirted with her, she practiced her spoken English with them.
Everyone was beautiful, of all types, but Xu Ling never felt her heart flutter. She even once suspected that maybe she wasn’t into women after all. Maybe she was asexual? Until she met Qin Cong’an.
The first time she saw her was when her movie was released abroad.
Meng Bai had said she hadn’t heard Chinese in a long time and insisted on going.
Xu Ling went with her, and a single shot of Qin Cong’an’s cold smile was etched in her memory for a long time.
When she returned to the country for an event, Qin Cong’an was there too.
At first, Xu Ling admired her from a distance, but after Qin Cong’an glanced at her, her knees went weak, and from then on, her admiration took on a different flavor.
She wanted to get close to her.
The atmosphere in the bar was great. The lighting was dim, and stylish jazz music flowed through the air.
Xu Ling focused on the drink menu and finally chose a rum-based cocktail. Just as she looked up to order, she saw a strange woman sitting next to her.
“Hi.”
Xu Ling glanced at her, then at her crew colleagues who were staring at her with meaningful expressions.
“Is this your first time here?” the woman asked with a charming smile, leaning a little too close to Xu Ling.
“Yeah, we heard this place is famous.” Seeing that no one else was speaking, Xu Ling had to answer herself.
The woman smiled and rested her head on her shoulder, startling Xu Ling.
“Your shoulders are so broad, and your legs are so long. How tall are you?” the woman asked with great interest.
“Uh, 179.” Xu Ling couldn’t quite handle this level of enthusiasm. Even in the lesbian bars abroad, she had never encountered someone who would rest their head on her after just a few words.
Seeing Xu Ling pull away, the woman’s smile deepened, as if she were even more interested in her.
The woman didn’t make any more physical contact, but from a short distance, she gestured towards her fingers and smiled. “So long.”
“…” Xu Ling immediately clenched her hand into a fist.
Wait, isn’t this a little too direct?
The woman could tell they weren’t locals and asked what they were doing in Mist City. Everyone replied, “Just here for tourism.”
Quite a few people came up to hit on Xu Ling.
She was tall and naturally stood out. Her aura was extraordinary, yet there was a hint of nervousness in her eyes, making her seem like a little lamb that had wandered into a pack of wolves, a stark contrast to her height.
Xu Ling loved to drink, but she drank a little too much that night, mainly using alcohol to dodge conversations.
On the way back.
Liang He laughed. “We said we were going to see if we could find some inspiration or gather some material, but we ended up just watching Little Xu get hit on all night.”
Chang Ning also said, “It was quite interesting. I didn’t know Little Xu was so shy.”
“…” Xu Ling pretended to be drunk and asleep, keeping her eyes closed and not saying a word.
Xu Ling was filled with regret. She should have just firmly refused from the beginning.
Unexpectedly, the next day on set, during a break, the fact that she had been hit on by so many people at the lesbian bar was brought up again for teasing.
Didn’t she have any pride!
And Qin Cong’an was right there. She didn’t want her to hear a single word of what they were saying.
But Qin Cong’an had clearly not missed a single word.
Today, they were filming a scene where Jian Yu goes to the bathroom without closing the door and is seen by Wen Xi.
Wen Xi looked at her, completely speechless.
“I’m scared,” Jian Yu said.
Wen Xi was at a loss for words. She was still a child, after all, and had witnessed her parents’ murder. It was understandable that she wouldn’t want to lock herself in a dark bathroom.
But Wen Xi still told her, “If you don’t close the door, I’m the one who’s scared. Don’t let it happen again.”
“Oh…”
As a result, Jian Yu didn’t close the door when she showered that night either.
But fortunately, because the sound of the water was loud, Wen Xi knew she was showering and didn’t go near.
Jian Yu showered quickly. Out of fear, she rinsed off in a few seconds and came out with foam still in her hair.
Wen Xi, exasperated, pulled her back into the bathroom, pushed her down to bend over, and used the showerhead to rinse the foam from her hair.
At this point, Jian Yu didn’t know what embarrassment was.
She was just a child who had lost her parents and been taken in. Her mind was still filled with thoughts of her parents’ murder.
Xu Ling was different. Her mind was filled with thoughts of Qin Cong’an wanting to shower with her.
“Xu Ling.” Chang Ning no longer called her “Little Xu” affectionately like last night. Her tone was serious. “What are you blushing for? Do you think Jian Yu would blush?”
“N-no…” Xu Ling glanced at Qin Cong’an in a panic and explained, “It’s just blood rushing to my head from bending over. I’m not blushing.”
“That won’t do. It looks too strange on camera. We’ll shoot again after you’ve recovered,” Chang Ning said.
A crew member came over to dry the water from her hair and handed her an ice pack.
Xu Ling held the ice pack to her face, slowly cooling down.
Surprisingly, Qin Cong’an didn’t go to rest. She just leaned against a wall and watched her. “Did you drink too much last night?”
“Not that much.”
“Is that so.” Qin Cong’an’s gaze remained on her face, not moving away.
“Yeah…”
Lin Xinnuo handed her Sister An some water, watching curiously as her Sister An struck up a conversation with Sister Ling. She had rarely, if ever, seen her Sister An initiate a conversation with someone.
Qin Cong’an eventually walked away and sat down in a chair to rest.
After cooling down and sticking a few fever-reducing patches on her back to stop herself from feeling so hot, Xu Ling continued filming the scene.
Wen Xi’s movements were a bit rough, and water got into Jian Yu’s ears. Jian Yu shook her head, splashing water all over Wen Xi.
Wen Xi frowned. “Are you a dog?”
Jian Yu giggled. Even though she was scolded, and even though Wen Xi was rough, she had helped her wash her hair. She was so nice.
Wen Xi’s tank top was soaked, leaving dark patches. She looked down, the frown on her brow deepening.
After finishing with Jian Yu, she draped a towel over her head, the hanging part covering her eyes. Wen Xi quickly left the bathroom.
But Jian Yu immediately came looking for her, wiping her hair, only to find the bedroom door locked from the inside.
Jian Yu banged on the rickety door, which looked like it might fall off its hinges at any moment. “Don’t lock the door, I’m scared!”
“What are you shouting about!” Wen Xi yelled back. She came out after changing her clothes.
The two sat on the balcony. Wen Xi smoked a cigarette while drying Jian Yu’s hair.
Jian Yu looked up at the sky and said she could see the stars.
