Chapter 11
Yi Huai didn’t think much of it.
But Lin Xinnuo had been observing the two of them. Because she had been waiting at the door of Qin Cong’an’s room, she had clearly seen Sister An come out of Xu Ling’s room.
She had looked like she had just woken up, wearing a knit sweater that didn’t seem to be hers, with the collar askew. But she was usually so meticulous.
Could Sister An have slept in Sister Ling’s room last night?
Lin Xinnuo was almost faint from this guess. But she knew she couldn’t ask, couldn’t say anything.
They arrived at Jian Yu and Wen Xi’s rooftop home.
The set was still being arranged. The two of them went to change and get their hair and makeup done first. They didn’t need makeup, so it didn’t take much time, but turning them into Jian Yu and Wen Xi was still a test for the stylists.
The set, however, took some effort. Especially when Chang Ning looked through the camera and felt that many things needed to be adjusted, it took another long while.
Liang He walked over and first asked Qin Cong’an, “You look like you didn’t sleep well last night. Was it to get into character for Wen Xi today?”
“Mhm.”
Liang He glanced over at Xu Ling. “I see Xu Ling didn’t sleep well either. Did you two discuss it last night?”
“Of course.”
Liang He nodded, very pleased. The two leads should communicate more. After all, their bond in the movie was very deep. If the two of them didn’t communicate at all in private, it would be difficult to act out that feeling, especially for a non-professional like Xu Ling.
Qin Cong’an said, “Xu Ling has some ideas for the birthday scene, and I think she has a point.”
“Good. After Director Chang is done over there, we’ll discuss it together.”
The director, screenwriter, Xu Ling, and Qin Cong’an sat on the rooftop, having a meeting under the hazy sunlight, discussing and revising based on everyone’s ideas.
Jian Yu, as if treating her like family, plants a loud kiss on Wen Xi’s cheek.
Wen Xi immediately recoils in horror, covering her face, and scolds her harshly, “Who taught you to do this?”
“Huh?” Jian Yu is startled, a little dazed, but replies as if it’s the most natural thing in the world, “My parents.”
“…”
“What’s wrong?” Jian Yu comes back to her senses and reaches out to touch her face, but she dodges. “I didn’t kiss you on the lips. What are you so shy about?”
Wen Xi’s expression darkens, but she can’t say anything.
Jian Yu grins and leans in closer. “Has my dear sister ever kissed anyone on the lips?”
“…Have you no shame?” Wen Xi slaps her across the face, stands up, and retreats into the room.
Jian Yu’s face stings a little. She knows that if Wen Xi had really hit her, it would have hurt much more than this.
But the slap still hurts her feelings a little. It’s her eighteenth birthday!
And Wen Xi had just sung “Happy Birthday” to her a moment ago, only to slap her the next. More than the pain, Jian Yu is shocked.
Just because she kissed her? Why such a big reaction?
Jian Yu takes the candles off the birthday cake and carries it to the door to knock.
The person inside doesn’t open the door and makes no sound.
Jian Yu carefully sets the cake down and increases the force of her knocking, shouting, “You locked the door again!” as she directly dismantles the already rickety door.
Wen Xi sits on the bed, speechless, as Jian Yu walks in carrying the door.
Jian Yu has been with Wen Xi for over two years. Every day, whether she wants to or not, she trains, even during her period.
She probably has good genes. She’s tall and strong, able to carry an 80-kilogram male corpse for a short distance.
Carrying the door, Jian Yu asks guiltily, “What do we do?”
“…” Wen Xi doesn’t want to say a word, but she has to get off the bed, take a hammer and screwdriver from the toolbox, and start reinstalling the door.
Jian Yu watches from the side, but she’s not looking at the door. She’s looking at Wen Xi’s face, and the lines of her arm as she tightens the screws.
She swallows and asks her, “Why did you hit me?”
Wen Xi, busy with the door, is silent for a moment before saying, “Because you didn’t have my permission.”
“Oh,” Jian Yu replies.
Wen Xi doesn’t know if her “oh” means she understands.
Seeing that the door is almost fixed, Jian Yu goes outside to get the cake. To prevent Wen Xi from locking her out again, she sits on her bed and waits.
After Wen Xi finishes, she washes her hands and returns to the room to find the child staring at her. She says helplessly, “What do you want?”
“To eat the cake together. You bought it for me, I can’t eat it all by myself.”
“I’m not eating.”
“No, you have to. The birthday girl is the boss, you should listen to me.” Jian Yu picks up a strawberry from the top, dips it in a generous amount of cream, and holds it to her lips.
Her eyes are shining. Wen Xi stares for two seconds, then looks away. It seems she won’t give up. She has no choice but to open her mouth and eat it.
Jian Yu watches with satisfaction as Wen Xi’s cheeks puff out. She suddenly reaches out, dabs a little cream, and smears it on the tip of her nose.
“…” Wen Xi’s brows knit together again. “Do you want to get hit again?”
“I’ve seen people play like this on their birthdays. Why would you hit me?”
“Then go find those ‘people’.” Wen Xi wipes off the greasy cream, leans against the wall, and looks at the door. “Get out.”
“I won’t.” Jian Yu sits on her bed and starts eating the cake.
The more Jian Yu eats, the happier she becomes. The cake is so sweet, and she hasn’t had any in a long time.
This is the first birthday she’s celebrated since leaving her parents.
Wen Xi knows nothing about her except her name, so of course, she doesn’t know when her birthday is.
Jian Yu wasn’t in the mood to celebrate her birthday either, but a few days ago, she suddenly realized she was turning eighteen, about to become an adult. She could smoke and drink like Wen Xi!
So she told her about it.
She never expected Wen Xi to buy her a birthday cake.
Jian Yu is so happy. She eats more than half of it and says, “You should really have some.”
Wen Xi is silent.
“I can’t eat anymore.”
“Put it in the fridge for tomorrow.”
Jian Yu feels that if she goes out to put it in the fridge, Wen Xi will immediately lock the door again. She doesn’t care. She says, “I want to sleep with you tonight, can I?”
She is asking for her permission.
“…Are you crazy?”
“What?” Why is she crazy? Jian Yu is unhappy with this remark but doesn’t argue. Instead, she starts to act pitiful. “It’s my birthday. I don’t want to sleep alone.”
“Get out,” Wen Xi says again.
Jian Yu refuses to leave.
Wen Xi starts to use force, only to find that in terms of strength, she can no longer overpower this child.
The two lie on the bed, a person’s width apart.
Jian Yu keeps staring at Wen Xi.
Wen Xi goes from staring at the ceiling to turning her back to her, saying in a fit of anger, “If you don’t brush your teeth, just wait for them to all fall out tomorrow.”
Jian Yu presses her lips together and moves closer, pressing her body against her from behind, her face against her back.
Wen Xi’s body stiffened, and she immediately tried to struggle.
“Sister,” Jian Yu said, wrapping her arms around her and asking very seriously, “why can’t I hug you like this?”
“…”
“Sister, why can’t I kiss you?”
“…”
“Sister, are you really not going to eat any cake? It’s very sweet.”
They filmed some other scenes during the day. During breaks, they continued to discuss the major scene they were shooting that night, perfecting the details step by step.
“Sister,” Xu Ling called out to Qin Cong’an.
Qin Cong’an glanced at her coolly. “What is it?”
“Nothing, I just wanted to say it to get used to it.” Xu Ling wasn’t very good at calling someone “Sister.” In her previous work, she had always addressed people as “Sister X.”
“It’s also Jian Yu’s first time calling Wen Xi ‘Sister.’ She’s not used to it either.”
Xu Ling muttered under her breath, “It’s also their first time hugging.”
But they had hugged many times already.
Qin Cong’an was looking at the script and didn’t respond.
The props team prepared three cakes. Chang Ning hoped to finish the scene in three takes at most and didn’t prepare any extras, wanting to put a little pressure on the two actresses.
That raw push-and-pull, Jian Yu’s budding feelings, and Wen Xi’s inner resistance and turmoil—Chang Ning felt that if they filmed it too many times, the actresses would actually have a harder time finding the right state of mind.
The rehearsal began.
Xu Ling held an imaginary cake in one hand and an imaginary strawberry in the other, bringing it to Qin Cong’an’s lips.
Chang Ning stood by, watching. “Your gaze is wrong, the emotion is wrong. Jian Yu is supposed to be innocent with a hint of probing. You look like you want to eat Wen Xi alive.”
“…I didn’t,” Xu Ling said softly.
Chang Ning frowned in displeasure. She didn’t like hearing actors say things like that. Did she think Chang Ning couldn’t see the other meaning in her eyes?
Xu Ling tried hard to get into Jian Yu’s state of mind, but it was so difficult.
She suddenly felt that her whole excuse of sleeping with Qin Cong’an for the sake of the film was completely invalid.
The dynamic between Jian Yu and Wen Xi wasn’t that of people who had slept together. On the contrary, a bit of unfamiliarity was what made it right.
But Xu Ling felt she couldn’t go back.
When she acted in a scene like this with Qin Cong’an, all she could think of was the expression on Qin Cong’an’s face when she was under her—cold, yet full of lust.
Qin Cong’an was helping her find her state of mind.
Chang Ning just sighed and said nothing. Xu Ling wasn’t a professional actress, after all, and the emotions in this scene were difficult. At twenty-four, it wasn’t easy for her to capture the feelings of an eighteen-year-old girl.
Seeing Qin Cong’an patiently helping her, Chang Ning felt somewhat reassured.
Sometimes, the help of a scene partner is even more valuable than the director’s.
Xu Ling felt like crying. She had originally thought the action scenes were the hardest to film, but it turned out this kind of scene was the most difficult. She would rather fight someone for three days and three nights, or even roll around in a mud pit, than act in a scene like this!
She couldn’t find the right state of mind, and sweat started to bead on her forehead.
But Qin Cong’an remained very calm, helping her find her state of mind, running lines with her, and guiding her through Jian Yu’s life once more.
Xu Ling gradually calmed down, put aside her own emotions, and grasped the feeling of Jian Yu.
Having lived together for over two years, Jian Yu had long developed some unusual feelings for Wen Xi, though she didn’t know what they were.
Perhaps it was just a sense of closeness to the person who had taken her in. Perhaps she saw her as family.
In truth, she knew clearly that wasn’t it, but she could only think of it that way.
And Wen Xi’s strange reaction made her vaguely aware that perhaps she felt the same way.
Jian Yu used her “innocence and ignorance” to probe Wen Xi, bit by bit.
And Wen Xi’s resistance was gradually broken down. She felt it was wrong, yet she couldn’t push away Jian Yu’s embrace. She also longed to have her by her side.
