Chapter 12
They finished filming the scene of making a wish in front of the birthday cake and feeding the strawberry relatively smoothly. Now, they were lying on the bed.
Wen Xi was covered by a thin blanket, as if trying to wrap herself up, preventing anyone from intruding.
Jian Yu lifted the blanket and pressed herself against her.
“Cut!” Chang Ning took off one side of her headphones. “The state is good, but Jian Yu, control your breathing. It’s affecting the sound recording.”
Xu Ling quickly let go of Qin Cong’an and turned to the other side to breathe in some fresh air.
The lack of sleep from the previous night was showing its negative effects now. She felt as if every cell in her body was throbbing.
Alright, she had overestimated herself. She thought that after sleeping together, she would get “used to it.” She hadn’t expected to be on the verge of losing it before she even hugged her. The moment her skin touched hers, her heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest.
With so many people watching, she was afraid her feelings for Qin Cong’an would be discovered.
And then she thought, have they already discovered it?
“Also…” Chang Ning continued. She had been focused on Xu Ling just now and hadn’t noticed Qin Cong’an. After re-watching the take, she found a problem with her as well. “Wen Xi’s reaction is too placid. Pay attention to that.”
Chang Ning didn’t say much more, confident that Qin Cong’an would understand what she meant.
Xu Ling heard this and couldn’t quite believe it. What does she mean? My heart is about to explode over here, and she’s so calm over there, as if she’s being hugged by someone insignificant?
Moreover, this was the first time since filming began that Chang Ning had given such feedback on Qin Cong’an’s performance.
So, she had no problem with any other scene, but when it came to a scene of being hugged from behind by her, she broke character?
Xu Ling was a little angry. Her breathing immediately stabilized. Her heart had turned half-cold; how could it not be stable?
After adjusting her state, they started filming again.
The cameraman held the camera, filming a close-up of their faces from above the bed.
Xu Ling leaned in, carefully, a little nervous.
Qin Cong’an shifted a couple of times, frowning.
“Sister, can’t I hug you like this?” Xu Ling recited her line, her voice very soft, with a subtle probing and a hint of fear, afraid of being pushed away.
Xu Ling couldn’t see Qin Cong’an’s expression, but her struggling stopped. Her restraining movements also softened. She continued to ask, “Sister, can’t I kiss you?”
As she spoke, the tip of her nose brushed against her shoulder, intentionally or not.
This wasn’t mentioned in their earlier discussion, but she felt a little brush would be nice.
Chang Ning didn’t call cut this time, but she wasn’t satisfied after the take. She scratched her face, even feeling a little annoyed.
“Xu Ling’s performance was okay, but Qin Cong’an, what’s wrong with you? Your reaction is too flat. It shouldn’t be. Where’s your inner struggle? Your conflict? Why isn’t any of it showing? Come and see for yourself. Apart from a slight reaction when Xu Ling brushed against you, what were you doing the rest of the time?”
Perhaps because her expectations for Qin Cong’an were too high, Chang Ning was a little disappointed and got a bit worked up.
Qin Cong’an said, “Sorry. Can you give me three minutes?”
“Fine.” Chang Ning still had faith in her and let her adjust.
Xu Ling looked at her back and asked the director, “Is there anything else I need to change?”
Chang Ning discussed it with her. Three minutes later, Qin Cong’an said, “I’m ready,” and sat on the bed.
They prepared to film again.
Before the camera rolled, Xu Ling leaned close to Qin Cong’an and asked, “Do you want me to help you get into character?”
Qin Cong’an glanced at her but didn’t speak.
Xu Ling took it as tacit approval. After the camera started rolling, she entered the now somewhat familiar state of Jian Yu and pressed herself against her.
This time, her hand, under the blanket, reached down and slipped onto her thigh.
Qin Cong’an stiffened, her brow immediately furrowing.
Chang Ning, watching the shot, saw Wen Xi’s face fill with alarm, as if she were holding her breath. Her eyes were finally full of emotion, a mixture of conflict, resistance, and desire.
Chang Ning thought this take was excellent. Both of their performances were good, and she was getting a little excited watching them.
Qin Cong’an’s reddened ears and Xu Ling’s tightly pressed lips were particularly evocative.
Liang He, watching from the side, was even blushing. Their performance was so good. They weren’t doing anything, yet it felt as if they were already tightly connected.
“Done?” Xu Ling was surprised.
“What, you want to do another take?” Chang Ning asked.
It wouldn’t be so bad, Xu Ling thought. But had she really gotten into character just because she touched her thigh? Or was she overthinking it, and was it just because she had adjusted her state during those three minutes? She didn’t know which was the correct answer.
She also watched the playback. Her attention was completely captivated by Qin Cong’an’s expression.
So hot…
That restrained feeling made it even hotter.
Everyone was discussing:
“Why does it feel like Jian Yu is the one with the ‘older sister’ vibe?”
“It looks like Jian Yu is the little white rabbit, but she’s actually the big bad wolf who wants to eat her sister.”
“Yes, yes, yes, this kind of formative relationship is great. When this is released, people are going to ship them to death.”
Qin Cong’an’s expression had returned to its usual calm, her cold demeanor inviolable.
Xu Ling sat to the side, drinking water, waiting to film a few more shots from different angles. Her eyes kept drifting towards her.
But Qin Cong’an didn’t seem to even look at her out of the corner of her eye.
The rest of the shoot went smoothly. Chang Ning checked everything and said they could wrap for the day.
Xu Ling almost fainted on the way back to the hotel. She was too tired. She hadn’t slept well and had been filming for so long.
The moment she got to the hotel, she fell asleep.
The next day, Xu Ling woke up early. Seeing that there was still plenty of time before they had to leave, she took a comfortable bath, feeling quite good.
As she was leaving her room, she happened to see Qin Cong’an and Lin Xinnuo coming out as well.
Lin Xinnuo greeted her enthusiastically again.
Xu Ling nodded. “Good morning.”
She then looked at Qin Cong’an. “Good morning.”
Qin Cong’an ignored her. Although she didn’t usually respond much before, she would at least glance at her. Today, she didn’t even look at her.
Xu Ling could clearly feel that something was wrong. Was she… angry with her?
But why?
It couldn’t be because she didn’t go find her after returning to the hotel last night. She must have been tired too; they both needed to rest.
Ruling out that ridiculous answer, Xu Ling continued to search for other possibilities, but she couldn’t think of any.
The elevator reached the first floor.
Xu Ling thought that once Lin Xinnuo left, she would ask Qin Cong’an, but today Lin Xinnuo didn’t go ahead, so she didn’t get a chance.
And for the entire day, Xu Ling couldn’t find an opportunity to ask.
During a break, Yi Huai came over and said to her, “I remember you said you liked Jiang Ruzhi, right?”
“Mhm…”
“Why are you so listless?” Yi Huai asked her. Anyone who didn’t know better would think she didn’t like her.
“A little tired.” Xu Ling forced a smile. “What about Jiang Ruzhi?”
“Her concert in Mist City. I got tickets. Do you want to go?”
At this, Xu Ling finally came alive. “Of course!”
She had wanted to go for a long time but couldn’t get tickets, and she didn’t have the right connections. She asked, “But will Director Chang give me the day off?”
“There’s still some time. If we ask in advance, I think she’ll agree.”
Xu Ling suddenly felt that Sister Huai was the best. Although she would scold her harshly, it was deserved.
“You can bring someone else. I have two tickets,” Yi Huai said.
“Isn’t Sister Huai going?”
“I’m not that interested. And you want to go with me? Would you be able to focus on the concert?”
Xu Ling was instantly even more moved. Sister Huai, you’ll always be my sister!
Yi Huai said, “The day before the show, I’ll give you both tickets. They’re VIP seats.”
“Oh, okay, thank you, Sister Huai.” Xu Ling immediately looked in Qin Cong’an’s direction. She was fanning herself with a small fan and reading the script.
If she asked her to go to the concert, would she agree?
Xu Ling remembered reading online that fans had said she didn’t like listening to music. Qin Cong’an’s hobbies were watching movies, plays, reading, and hiking.
Besides, it probably wasn’t a good idea for Qin Cong’an to go. If she were seen at the venue, people would definitely speculate about her relationship with Jiang Ruzhi, which would be troublesome.
At that moment, Gu Qi, who had overheard their conversation, said, “Xu Ling, Xu Ling, um, do you have someone in mind to go with? If not…” She pointed at herself with a look of hopeful anticipation.
“Oh,” Xu Ling tore her gaze away and looked at the actress who played the role of Wen Xi’s handler. “Sure. I was just wondering who to ask. Let’s go together then. So you like Jiang Ruzhi too.”
“Yeah, I love her! I’ve been a fan for ten years!”
“Wow, me too!” Xu Ling was a little excited. A fellow fan was right beside her. “Which album is your favorite?”
The two of them hadn’t been very familiar before and had barely spoken, but they immediately started chatting enthusiastically.
For the rest of the day, during breaks, Xu Ling and Gu Qi talked animatedly about Jiang Ruzhi’s music, both thrilled to have found a kindred spirit.
After work, back at the hotel, Xu Ling collapsed onto her bed and started watching fan-cam videos of Jiang Ruzhi’s previous concerts, beginning her review. She was determined to sing along from beginning to end.
After watching a few videos, Xu Ling remembered Qin Cong’an, who hadn’t spoken to her all day.
They had fewer scenes together today, filming their individual shots separately. They hadn’t spoken at all after finishing.
Xu Ling opened WeChat. The side account with only an orange emoji for a name and everything else blank. She hesitated, wondering if she should send her a message.
But what could she send?
She didn’t even know how she had offended her. Should she just apologize first? Maybe send a “sorry” and see what happens?
But why should she? Why should she apologize? What had she done wrong?
She hated the silent treatment the most.
As Xu Ling thought this, she felt something was off. Was Qin Cong’an ignoring her really the silent treatment? They weren’t in an intimate relationship, not lovers, not even friends. How could it be called the silent treatment?
But not knowing why she was acting this way still left Xu Ling feeling frustrated.
Just as she was about to go back to watching Jiang Ruzhi’s videos, her phone vibrated twice, and the screen changed.
Orange had sent her a message: [In your room?]
