Chapter 30
Tenth day countdown.
This was the last day of filming at the rooftop cabin. The scene was of Jian Yu and Wen Xi huddled together on the sofa, watching a movie, but neither of them was really watching, their minds on the fact that they had finally found that man. They both knew what this meant. After eliminating the target, they would lose many things.
However, they never doubted the possibility that they couldn’t eliminate him.
Actually, this scene could have been filmed earlier, but Chang Ning was afraid they wouldn’t be able to get into the right state of mind, so she saved it for the end, concentrating all the emotions together for a more explosive performance.
They were watching a short film that Chang Ning had specially made, about a female protagonist who didn’t know why people live. She returns to the countryside to find a reason to live, a story that could be classified as an art film.
The screen was filled with large patches of green, very fresh, but a flickering red line ran across the middle of the old TV, occasionally stopping at the protagonist’s neck.
The two of them changed into loose pajamas and sat on the sofa, listening to Chang Ning explain the scene.
Xu Ling was already quite familiar with the script. She lowered her eyelashes, staring at the overlapping light green hems of their clothes on the red fabric sofa, a little lost in thought.
Sitting on the sofa with Qin Cong’an like this, wearing pajamas and watching TV, had a sense of the life she had always dreamed of.
Qin Cong’an’s hand suddenly rested on Xu Ling’s thigh as she reached for the remote control on the coffee table. After getting it, she continued to listen to Chang Ning, but her hand didn’t leave her thigh.
Xu Ling’s heart rate shot up. She looked up and only then realized that the behind-the-scenes camera was pointed at them.
So proactive in doing fan service, Qin Cong’an. Xu Ling’s heartbeat gradually calmed down. But she really hadn’t been like this before; she was known for being cold.
Was this movie that important to her? What kind of box office numbers was she aiming for?
“I have no problem,” Qin Cong’an said, then patted her thigh. “Do you have any questions?”
“No.” Xu Ling was a little uncomfortable with her action, shifted to the side, and stood up. She asked Director Chang, “Actually, I do have a question. Director Chang, should we be eating something while watching?”
“What do you think? In a state where you can’t even focus on the TV, would you eat?” Chang Ning was seriously discussing it with them.
“I think Jian Yu would eat,” Xu Ling said. “Or maybe she would have gotten a lot of food out of habit, but then not eaten much, leaving a lot behind. Wouldn’t that also reflect their anxiety?”
Chang Ning thought she had a point and called for the props team to arrange for food.
Xu Ling also went over to help.
A moment later, Qin Cong’an also came over, holding the behind-the-scenes camera, the lens aimed at Xu Ling.
Xu Ling glanced at the person behind the camera, her heart skipping a beat. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing.” Just filming her. Filming her working seriously, filming her as if she were running from something.
Chang Ning sensed the subtle atmosphere between the two and said before they started filming, “Let’s try to wrap up the rooftop scenes today. Don’t drag it out.”
The two of them both agreed and sat down on the sofa, leaning against each other.
The lights, microphone, composition, and camera movement were all in place. They started filming.
The half-green, half-red light from the TV flickered on their faces, sometimes bright, sometimes dark.
Jian Yu, while watching TV, shelled a pistachio and held it to Wen Xi’s lips. Wen Xi turned her face away, not eating.
If you don’t want it, I’ll eat it. Jian Yu’s eyes showed a hint of disdain. She opened her mouth and tossed it in, but missed. It fell on her clothes. She picked it up and ate it.
Chang Ning called “cut.” Xu Ling was still shelling another pistachio. After shelling it, she held it to Qin Cong’an’s lips.
Qin Cong’an’s gaze flickered between the pistachio and Xu Ling’s face a few times before she opened her mouth and ate it.
The behind-the-scenes camera didn’t miss this moment.
The filming went smoothly. The two of them were already very familiar with this daily interaction between Jian Yu and Wen Xi. Even with the addition of some unusual emotions, it wasn’t difficult.
While Chang Ning was filming other close-ups in the room, the two of them went out to the rooftop to prepare for the next scene.
The sky was dark, the moon was full, but in the vast sky, only a few stars were visible.
“The moon is so lonely,” Xu Ling said.
“The moon probably doesn’t have such feelings,” Qin Cong’an said, still able to taste the lingering pistachio in her mouth.
“…Are you trying to be a wet blanket or comfort me?”
“Depends on how you interpret it.”
After saying that, Qin Cong’an glanced at the people around them, who were busy with their own things, and lowered her voice to ask Xu Ling, “Why did you suddenly walk away just now?”
“You scared me. Didn’t you say we couldn’t be like that outside?” Xu Ling also lowered her voice, so only they could hear.
“We were filming behind-the-scenes. It can be explained.”
“Mhm, I realized that too. That’s why I fed you the pistachio just now.”
“Oh,” Qin Cong’an said, her tone a little disappointed. “It was pretty good.”
Xu Ling’s volume returned to normal. “The roommate I told you about, the pistachio paste she made was also delicious, so delicate. Sometimes when she was away on a trip, I would spread pistachio paste on toast to satisfy my cravings.”
Qin Cong’an’s voice was still low. “Oh, you only lived together for two years, but you have quite a few memories.”
“How did you know we lived together for two years?” Xu Ling was surprised.
“…” Qin Cong’an looked at the lonely moon, her expression unchanged. “You said so.”
“Did I?”
“Mhm, wasn’t she your senior, two years older than you?”
Xu Ling thought back. Maybe she had really said that in passing. “Well, two years isn’t short. Living together every day, of course we have a lot of memories.”
“Every day? You just said she was sometimes away on trips.”
“…You don’t have to be so nitpicky.” Xu Ling counted on her fingers. “Let me see, 730 days, we lived together for at least 600 days. Is that okay?”
“Oh.” Who wants to hear this? Even if they were just roommates, who wanted to hear this?
The behind-the-scenes camera suddenly moved closer.
Only then did Qin Cong’an return to her normal volume and say to Xu Ling, “I think you have a lot of ideas. You’re quite suited to be an actress.”
“Really?” Xu Ling looked at her with a surprised expression. “Thank you for the compliment, senior.”
“Now you know I’m your senior.”
The behind-the-scenes cameraman had a gossipy expression, wondering if this was just fan service or if there was something real going on. When had Xu Ling not treated Qin Cong’an as a senior?
Xu Ling’s expression also looked like she had been choked by something. She didn’t say anything more, just pursed her lips, took the camera from the cameraman, and started filming the moon.
Chang Ning was very satisfied with the moon tonight. The effect was quite good. It was best if she could get what she wanted with a real shot; it had the most authenticity.
Under the moon, the two of them discussed their plan to deal with that man, what weapons they needed to prepare, how to coordinate if his strength exceeded their estimates, and how to respond if he had backup.
“Cut! OK! That’s it for tonight. Our cabin and rooftop are wrapped!” Chang Ning announced excitedly. “Thank you to everyone who worked hard to build the cabin and the set!”
Liang He said, “Come on, let’s take a group photo to commemorate this.”
The camera was set up. Everyone stood with their backs to the moon, ready for the group photo.
The two leads were naturally together, in the middle of the front row. To avoid blocking the people behind them, they both squatted down.
Just as Xu Ling squatted down and pulled at the hem of Jian Yu’s pajamas, she felt her hand being hooked. She froze.
Was this also part of the promotion? They were pressed together, their hands clasped in the blind spot blocked by their knees. It wouldn’t be visible in the photo, but from the angle of their shoulders, it would probably be easy for people to imagine things.
Did Qin Cong’an want people to see, or not? Or did she have a deep understanding of the minds of CP fans, knowing that the candy that needed to be found with a microscope was the kind that could really make people go crazy?
“Okay! Five, four…” The person who pressed the shutter ran over.
Xu Ling’s other hand was raised. She was a model who was very good at taking photos, yet she only made a tacky peace sign and smiled at the camera.
Qin Cong’an glanced at her and, very symmetrically, also made a peace sign.
The flash went off, freezing the moment. The moon didn’t look so lonely in the photo.
Everyone then went inside to take photos. Because the room was small and there were a lot of people, they had to adjust their positions for a while.
During this time, Xu Ling looked around the room. The height markings on the wall, the old TV, the bedroom door that had been taken down and reinstalled…
She felt a little like crying. It was really time to say goodbye to this place.
They had eaten a birthday cake here together, slept together, brushed their teeth together, and cooked together. They had so many memories.
After the wrap, this cabin would be torn down. Everything would disappear, as if nothing had ever happened.
Just like their clandestine relationship.
Xu Ling finally looked at Qin Cong’an, only to see her looking back at her.
“So reluctant to leave?” Qin Cong’an asked.
“Mhm.” Xu Ling averted her gaze. “Are you?”
“I am, but it can’t be helped. I’m used to it.”
Yes, she had been acting for so many years, had experienced so many scenes like this, and had had so many short-term lovers. She knew how to let go.
Xu Ling smiled, took Qin Cong’an’s hand, in the bright light of the room.
Then she also took the hand of Liang He, who was next to her.
Liang He was stunned, looked at her other hand, understood what she meant, and then took the hand of the props director on his other side.
The photo was taken.
The photographer said, “I’ll export it and send it to the group chat later. Everyone remember to check it.”
Xu Ling returned to her hotel room. After showering, she saw the photo Sister Huai had sent. She first checked the one taken on the rooftop.
She didn’t know what a completely uninformed person would think, but to her, it was too obvious! They were clearly holding hands! And she hadn’t realized it at the time, but now that she thought about it, the people in the back rows could probably see it!
Xu Ling guiltily checked the expression of everyone in the back row, but she couldn’t tell if they had seen or not.
Xu Ling sighed. Actually, if she had just held her hand openly, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. Being sneaky like this was more likely to cause misunderstandings.
Xu Ling opened the photo taken in the room and only then realized that while she had held hands with people on both sides, Qin Cong’an hadn’t. She had only held hers.
Just like at the concert that day. Except that at the concert, there was no one on Qin Cong’an’s other side. Now there was, but she hadn’t taken their hand.
On one side, it was a lively scene of holding hands. On the other, influenced by Qin Cong’an’s aura, it looked a little unfamiliar. The two sides had completely different atmospheres.
No, it looked even stranger than the photo on the rooftop.
What on earth was she doing? Was it because there hadn’t been any explosive material in the behind-the-scenes footage recently, so she was making a final push?
Her phone vibrated twice. The orange emoji sent a message: [Sister Quan is gone.]
Xu Ling left her room, but she didn’t need her room key. Qin Cong’an was waiting for her at the door. She looked around the corridor, her steps inexplicably becoming a little sneaky.
Qin Cong’an, however, was calm. She just had one arm crossed over her chest and held out her other hand to her. “I say, shouldn’t you give me your room key too?”
