Chapter 50 p2
The show started recording at seven o’clock. Xu Ling arrived five minutes early, did some simple preparations, and then they started.
Today, she was the only guest. Xu Ling entered with a bag full of various seasonings, greeted the camera, and received instructions from the executive director.
The guests who came in the morning all had a task, which was to wake up the regular guests.
Just as Xu Ling received this task, someone came out of the house. She turned her head and met their eyes. It was that Ming Yao.
After a very ordinary greeting, Xu Ling went into the house to wake people up, only to find that Min Yidan was also there. A sense of relief instantly filled her.
Since they had first met at Starry Night, Xu Ling and Min Yidan had run into each other on variety shows from time to time. After adding each other on WeChat, they had even had dinner twice. Their relationship was already very close.
This time, the two of them were also together for almost the entire recording. Min Yidan took good care of Xu Ling, teaching her how to prepare vegetables, very patiently.
This was the most tiring variety show Xu Ling had ever recorded. It was the first 24-hour continuous recording. The whole time, she was very tense. The key was that she really had to cook and serve the guests, and also accept their satisfaction ratings and comments.
The number of guests was calculated by the crew, just enough so that all the guests couldn’t be idle for a single moment.
During the one-hour lunch break in the afternoon, Xu Ling was basically passed out. She didn’t even hear the few regulars singing karaoke outside.
But this kind of high-intensity work could actually avoid some mental exhaustion. Pure physical labor, breathing the fresh mountain air, was surprisingly happy.
After seeing off the last table of guests for the day, everyone could finally eat.
At the dinner table, the guests all cued Xu Ling to promote the movie, and then asked this and that, giving her a lot of promotional time.
It was just that the topic was hard not to bring up Qin Cong’an.
Qin Cong’an didn’t participate in this type of variety show, but her popularity was something no show could pass up. Every actor who had worked with Qin Cong’an would be asked questions about her.
“Not difficult to get along with at all. She took very good care of me, including yesterday when we were shooting for the magazine. When we were going there, I got seasick, and she even helped me press my pressure points to relieve it.”
“Wow, it sounds like she also takes care of you in private,” Min Yidan said from the side, dying of envy. Just being able to film a movie with Qin Cong’an was enough to make many actors jealous, let alone that she was so caring.
“Yeah, to meet a senior like that, I really feel very lucky.”
The table was quiet for a moment. Ming Yao laughed out loud and complained, “Why is your tone so official? Be more natural.”
“Ah, I really think so.” Xu Ling made a heart with her hands to the camera. “A long-distance confession to Teacher Qin.”
…Even more official.
There was also an actor who had filmed with Qin Cong’an before. That person said, “Little Qin is indeed not a difficult person to get along with, but helping someone with seasickness, that’s the first I’ve heard of it. I can’t even imagine it.”
Xu Ling was choked for a moment, then reacted quickly and said, “Maybe it’s because our relationship in the movie is a bit like that. She picked me up and took care of me like a younger sister.”
“Oh—” everyone dragged out the sound. “Then that’s understandable. Then, Little Xu, do you want a sister like Qin Cong’an?”
Huh? No way.
Xu Ling’s eyes curved into a smile. “Of course. It would be best to have a sister like that.”
It really was back to the sisterly love thing.
After the recording ended, Xu Ling returned to North City the next morning and continued to shoot various materials with Qin Cong’an, accept various interviews, and hold various meet-and-greets.
The movie was released during the golden week. The pre-sale box office only lost to the second installment of a popular commercial blockbuster by a very narrow margin.
The audience was very much looking forward to Qin Cong’an’s first dual-female-lead movie. Plus, the director was Chang Ning, a famous art-house film director who had won an international film award. Even if this style wasn’t necessarily a type that the general public liked, the buzz was not small.
The premiere was held a week before the official release.
The actors were also watching the final cut for the first time. They didn’t know what the individual scenes they had filmed would be edited into.
Sitting in the middle, Xu Ling was a little nervous, not just because it was the first time she was seeing herself on the big screen, but also because Qin Cong’an was sitting next to her.
There were many people in the screening hall, but as soon as the lights went down, she couldn’t feel the presence of anyone else, only the smell of the leather seats in the cinema and the reassuring scent of Qin Cong’an.
The opening was a large expanse of green, with a black car speeding through it. The green, which usually represented freshness, was now overwhelmingly oppressive, covered in a layer of fog, so humid it was as if a wet paper towel was stuck to your mouth and nose, making it hard to breathe.
It quickly cut to the two of them living two completely different lives before they met.
Jian Yu was happy, going to school, with classmates gathering around her desk to play with her after class, and a hot meal waiting for her at home. Wen Xi was lonely, living alone on a rooftop that was cold in the winter and hot in the summer, eating a bun when she was hungry, bandaging her own wounds, and lying on a hard board to bask in the moonlight.
As the plot developed, the rooftop was no longer a one-person home, but a home for the two of them. It was old and simple, but it began to be filled with the sound of stir-frying, of laughter, of whining, and also, the sound of heartbeats.
There was a reason Chang Ning was called a genius. She had edited the seemingly everyday scenes in a way that made the emotional intensity between the two of them seem even thicker than the thickest morning fog. And every change, every heartbeat, was handled just right, just at the audience’s heart, like a little cat’s paw gently scratching.
Probably because she knew what would happen later, Xu Ling cried when she saw them at their happiest.
A tissue was handed over. It was from Chang Ning, who was next to her. Xu Ling took it, wiped away her tears, and continued to watch the movie. Rather than watching to see how the two protagonists would end up, it was more about watching how Chang Ning skillfully used the camera to shape the characters and the story.
But even knowing that all of this was a fictional story created by the hateful genius next to her to deceive people, it still hurt to watch.
The whole theater was filled with the sound of sniffling. Even after the movie ended, there were still sobs.
Chang Ning was too good at filming. She had filmed both of them so beautifully and delicately. After watching it, you always felt that there was an unbreakable thread wrapped around them.
After the screening, the lights came on. Xu Ling looked at Qin Cong’an next to her. Her eyes were red, and she looked like she had been crying too, which made her breath catch.
The host was asking the main creators to come on stage. Qin Cong’an wiped the corner of her eye one last time and stood up to walk over. Xu Ling also followed, while greeting the audience in the back row.
After getting on stage, the host warmed up the crowd and then said, “It seems everyone has calmed down. Then let’s have our main creators introduce themselves first, starting with Director Chang.”
The promotion team knew that everyone might be a little down after watching the movie, so the self-introductions they had prepared were all relatively lighthearted. They introduced themselves one by one, and there was indeed laughter from the audience.
This premiere had a Q&A session with the audience. When the staff handed the microphone to an audience member who had raised their hand, everyone on stage held their breath. No one could predict what questions the audience would ask.
Fortunately, the first person just asked about the plot of the movie, asking with a heavy nasal voice if the two protagonists had died in the end.
The first question often set the tone, but the second person went in a completely different direction. “First of all, I’m so excited! The movie was so good, I cried my eyes out, but I also felt very happy. Thank you, Director Chang, for making such a film that gives people a gentle stab.”
“And then!” the girl’s voice suddenly rose. “Everyone has their own judgment about the relationship between Jian Yu and Wen Xi. I believe everyone is more curious about the relationship between the two actresses in private. I saw in your interview before that you both had feelings for each other that were beyond ordinary during the filming, so…?”
There were a total of three microphones on stage, one in the host’s hand, one in Xu Ling’s, who had been arranged to interact more with the audience because she was more talkative, and one in Chang Ning’s, who had just answered a question.
Chang Ning immediately stuffed the microphone into Qin Cong’an’s hand and also stared at the two of them with a curious expression.
Xu Ling suddenly felt that the microphone was very hot. How had she been confronted by a CP fan so directly? She wasn’t prepared.
Qin Cong’an glanced at her. Seeing that she had no intention of speaking, she spoke first. “I’ll leave that to your own judgment as well.”
The girl with the microphone made an intriguing sound, and the rest of the audience also gasped in unison.
Qin Cong’an hadn’t even said “you all.” She had said “you,” this CP fan. How else could she judge? She could only judge in the most unbroadcastable direction.
Xu Ling quickly added, “After all, we were together every day, and the feelings between Jian Yu and Wen Xi are so deep. After getting into their characters, we were naturally affected. It definitely wouldn’t be so ‘plain’.”
The implication was that after the filming was over, as soon as they were out of character, those feelings were gone.
“Okay, okay, thank you. Anyway, I’ve shipped it. Thank you, thank you.” The girl sat down with a satisfied expression.
Xu Ling also gave a small bow and thanked the audience for their question. It was a little hot. She pulled at the collar of her T-shirt and shook it. After two shakes, she realized this wasn’t right. The CP fans would imagine that she was shy—no, they would discover that she was shy. So she quickly put it down and pursed her lips, waiting for the next audience member to ask a question.
The next one was even more direct. “Are the couple outfits you’re wearing for sale?”
Everyone on stage was wearing ordinary jeans or casual pants. Their upper bodies were the movie’s merchandise T-shirts, in black and white, without any exaggerated large words or posters. They were in a style that could be worn out on a normal day. And the two leads were wearing a beautiful green, with a small logo of two knives on the chest.
Looking at it this way, they really were couple outfits.
The organizer said from the side of the stage, “They are. They’ll be sold at the cinema entrance later. Not only the ones the main creators are wearing, but also many other styles, in all sizes. Welcome to come and choose.”
“Okay, okay, the movie is so good, and the clothes are also so beautiful. I’ll go buy them all later!” After saying that, the girl started her next question. “Your fight scenes are so amazing to watch. Can you perform a segment on the spot?”
Applause and cheers erupted from the audience, all in support of this suggestion.
Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an looked at each other. This was a very normal request. They had no reason to refuse. They just both looked at the martial arts instructor.
“But in the movie, we all fight with other people. We only cooperate. If we were to do it, we could only fight with the teacher.”
“No, no, no,” the teacher waved his hands repeatedly. “I can choreograph a segment of you two fighting on the spot, just with the moves you’ve learned. It’ll be quick, and it won’t take up much time.”
