Chapter 25 p1: Injured
The sound came from its throat, very muffled and hoarse. If one didn’t listen carefully, it would be hard to tell what it was saying.
“Bad… snake.”
In front of Yu Chujin, the large snake stuttered the words again.
It hugged its tail, its eyes teary, and called her a bad snake.
After scolding her, it raised its head and whimpered. After whimpering, it dug a hole with its claws, buried its face in the sandpit, and continued to whimper.
Yu Chujin was completely bewildered.
The snake spoke?
The snake spoke!
Although it was just two simple and muffled words, it had indeed spoken.
Absurd, too absurd.
It was a hundred times more absurd than it having claws, a mouthful of large white teeth, a strange appearance, and a clingy personality like a dog.
A snake speaking human language. This could no longer be considered strange; it could be called bizarre.
Was she afraid? Not really. It was more of a surprise.
Yu Chujin jogged to the large snake’s side and turned into a “why” machine, “You can also imitate human speech? Like a parrot? Or are you a monster? A snake demon? Are you even a snake?”
The large snake ignored her and just buried its head in the sandpit, crying.
Yu Chujin patted it, not to comfort it, but to say, “Say it again for me.”
“Say it, say it. The ‘bad snake’ you just said. I didn’t hear it clearly. Say it again.”
The large snake stubbornly buried its face in the sand and cried endlessly.
Yu Chujin’s mouth twitched. She could only pat its head first and coax it, “Alright, alright, stop whimpering. I apologize, okay? My bad. I shouldn’t have hit your tail. Is that okay?”
Her apology was very perfunctory, but it wasn’t a big problem. The large snake was a very easy snake to coax.
Sure enough, as soon as she finished speaking, the large snake was finally willing to leave the sandpit.
It raised its head and looked at her with teary eyes. Its face was still covered in sand. It was a pitiful little thing. No, from its size, it was a big pitiful thing.
This snake was really exaggerated. Did it have to cry like this just from a tap on its tail? As if the sky was falling.
Yu Chujin wanted to laugh, but she held it back and reached out to wipe the sand from its face.
“Alright, no more whimpering, no more crying. Since it’s okay now, you can talk again,” Yu Chujin still hadn’t forgotten this matter.
“Say it. Why aren’t you saying it?”
“Say it.”
No matter how Yu Chujin coaxed it, the large snake was unwilling to speak, only responding with hisses.
Yu Chujin began to suspect that the two words “bad snake” she had heard were an illusion, that she had had an auditory hallucination.
Yu Chujin shook her head. Impossible. It was definitely not an auditory hallucination. This snake had spoken.
But why did it say the two words “bad snake”? Was it because she had hit its tail, and it was scolding her?
“Did you say ‘bad snake’ to scold me? Because I often scold you as a bad snake, so you learned these two words?”
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin smiled, “Stupid snake. To scold me, you have to say ‘bad person.’ I’m not a snake.”
The large snake grinned, showing its large white teeth, “Hiss hiss.”
The large snake had just been crying and was so angry that it had even called her a bad snake. Now, it was clingily coming over to ask for pats.
It could get so angry that it could speak human language, but it was also really easy to coax.
“Can you really not talk to me again?” Yu Chujin was unwilling to give up and looked at it with an expectant expression.
The large snake licked her, but showed no intention of speaking.
Yu Chujin was disappointed.
In the following days, Yu Chujin relentlessly tried to coax the large snake to speak again, but without exception, she never succeeded.
On the deserted island, her mood was always up and down. One moment, she was full of energy. The next, she was exhausted. One moment, she was laughing. The next, she was numb.
Today, she was in an exhausted period. Watching the tally marks on the tree trunk constantly increasing, she began to feel down again.
But it was much better than before. She wouldn’t go crazy and pull her hair. Mainly because pulling her hair really hurt, and she was afraid of pain.
The large snake sensed that the human was in a bad mood and stayed by her side all day, not leaving her for a single step.
Although it was usually inseparable from her, the feeling was different. The previous inseparability was clingy, while the current inseparability was more like comfort.
It was a very subtle difference, but Yu Chujin could still feel it.
This snake was really annoying when it was annoying, but it was also very considerate and sensible when it was considerate and sensible. Unlike her, who was always very irritable. Not to mention being considerate, she would hit the snake every two or three days. It was a good thing this snake didn’t hold a grudge.
Yu Chujin sat by the sea in a daze. The large snake accompanied her, sitting with her from dawn to dusk.
The night was as dark as ink. The moonlight sprinkled on the surface of the sea. The waves rolled with the moonlight, hitting the sand, creating circles of white foam. A faint salty taste wafted in the air.
“Do you think a miracle will happen? Will a ship suddenly appear on the sea?”
“Hiss hiss.”
“I’m so tired. But I haven’t done anything. I eat and sleep all day. What’s there to be tired about?”
“Hiss hiss.”
One person and one snake fell into a long silence, with only the sound of the waves hitting the sand.
“Gurgle.”
Her stomach rumbled with hunger.
The large snake turned its head and stared at her stomach.
Yu Chujin was embarrassed. She hadn’t eaten all day and was a little hungry.
The large snake lowered its body and pressed its ear against her stomach to listen.
Yu Chujin: “…”
After listening for a while, as if confirming something, the large snake drilled into the forest without a word.
Yu Chujin quickly called out, “It’s already night. Don’t go out. There are still nectarines in the shelter. I’ll just eat some nectarines and coconuts.”
The large snake stopped and listened with pricked ears for a while. It hissed twice, as if explaining, probably meaning, You’re hungry. I’m going hunting.
“There are coconuts and nectarines. I can just eat a bite. It’s night now. It’s not convenient to go hunting.”
“Hiss hiss.”
“…”
Communication failed. The large snake was single-minded and stubbornly believed that if the human was hungry, it had to go hunting, regardless of whether it was night or whether she could eat some nectarines to tide her over.
The large snake couldn’t get past this point and only believed in its own logic.
In the end, the large snake still drilled into the forest to hunt.
Yu Chujin had no choice but to move to the bonfire, hug her knees, rest her chin on her knees, and look at the flickering flames in front of her, waiting for the large snake to return.
The firelight reflected on her face, showing her thinner face and darker skin.
After living in the wild for so long, exposed to the elements, even a beautiful person would become disheveled and no different from a savage.
She had previously worried about what to do when her period came. There were no sanitary napkins here. But after more than a month, her worries were really unnecessary.
Although she was fed by the large snake every day and was full every day, she was inevitably malnourished. Various trace elements were not supplemented, and her period became irregular and delayed. It hadn’t come for more than a month.
But in the current situation, it was better that it didn’t come. If it did, she really didn’t know how to deal with it, and things would become extremely troublesome.
Usually, when the large snake went out to hunt, it would be back in half an hour at most. Today, it seemed to be taking an unusually long time.
Yu Chujin bit her lip and looked into the depths of the forest. It was pitch black.
Looking at the dark forest for a long time added a sense of fear. Yu Chujin didn’t dare to look too much and averted her gaze.
Why was it taking so long today? Could it have encountered danger?
Was the large snake at the top of the food chain on this island? Could there be animals more powerful than it?
On the island, the largest creature Yu Chujin had seen was the wild boar that had tried to attack her before. There didn’t seem to be any other larger animals on the island.
But that wasn’t certain. Yu Chujin had entered the forest only a handful of times. Except for going deep into the forest to find the nectarine tree once, the other times she had entered the forest, such as to find firewood, she had only stayed on the outskirts.
Perhaps there were other large creatures deep in the forest. Maybe there were animals that could pose a danger to the large snake.
Thinking of this, Yu Chujin became anxious.
Her mentality had also changed a lot compared to before. In the past, when the large snake was late in returning, Yu Chujin was afraid of being abandoned, afraid of losing its protection.
But now, what she was more afraid of was not abandonment and loss of protection, but the large snake’s safety. She was afraid something would happen to it.
She paced back and forth on the sand, glancing at the forest from time to time. Her anxiety made her want to go into the forest to find the large snake.
But obviously, no matter how worried she was, she couldn’t go into the forest alone. If she went to find the large snake alone, she would only put herself in a difficult situation and would not be able to help the large snake at all.
A feeling of powerlessness washed over her.
She plopped down on the ground, feeling useless. Living on this island, she couldn’t carry anything, couldn’t lift anything, and didn’t even have the ability to protect herself. If the large snake was really in danger, she probably couldn’t help it at all.
She couldn’t do anything but wait, endlessly wait, just like now.
She didn’t like this feeling, but no matter how much she disliked it, she couldn’t change the situation. She was too small. A human trapped on this island was so small that she was powerless to do anything.
Inevitably, she fell into a negative mood again.
She pulled at her hair and found that a handful of hair had really fallen out. Long-term malnutrition had not only caused her period to be irregular, but also hair loss.
It’s over. Am I going to become bald?
Dark as a ball, thin as a stick, disheveled, and her hair was falling out in clumps. Wow, she was really living like a savage.
She lay flat on the beach, her hands behind her head, and stared blankly at the night sky.
The night sky was so beautiful, with a crescent moon like a hook and twinkling stars. But the person under the night sky was lifeless, like a withered flower.
A withered flower… a bright flower appeared in front of her, blocking the night sky.
The large snake had returned. It had brought back a bouquet of flowers, coiled in its tail, and offered it to Yu Chujin.
Yu Chujin took the flowers.
The large snake looked at her shyly and expectantly.
During this period, every time the large snake went out to hunt, besides bringing back prey, it would also bring back a bouquet of flowers, and the flowers were different every time.
Yu Chujin didn’t understand this behavior. Giving food was feeding. What was the meaning of giving flowers? Did it want to be friends with her? But they were already friends.
If she couldn’t figure it out, she wouldn’t think about it. Anyway, there were many strange things about this snake. It could even talk, although only once. In comparison, giving flowers was not strange at all.
Yu Chujin lowered her head and sniffed the flowers. The faint floral scent warmed her gloomy mood a little.
What was there to be dissatisfied with? At least she wasn’t dead. At least she had a large snake to accompany her, and the large snake was willing to give her a bouquet of flowers every day. How was that not a kind of luck?
“Why did you take so long to hunt today? Is it because it’s not easy to hunt at night?”
As soon as she finished speaking, Yu Chujin noticed what the large snake was holding in its claws: a chicken, a rabbit, and a branch with fruits hanging from it.
Yu Chujin looked closely. Was it loquat?
Yu Chujin quickly took the branch. That’s right, it was loquat. A new food was unlocked.
It was just a pity that all the loquats on this branch were green and unripe.
This process was a bit familiar…
“Are there ripe ones that you didn’t pick?”
“Hiss hiss.”
She was highly suspicious. Perhaps it shouldn’t be suspicion. It could almost be confirmed. It must have not picked the ripe ones, only the unripe ones.
Because the large snake’s taste was rather peculiar. It liked to eat sour fruits. Sweet fruits were probably rotten, bad fruits in its eyes.
Yu Chujin didn’t understand why the large snake liked to eat sour fruits, and the large snake probably didn’t understand why she liked to eat ripe fruits.
“Will you take me to find this loquat tree tomorrow? Okay?” Yu Chujin picked up the branch and showed it to it.
It was unclear whether the large snake understood. She just saw it come over and nuzzle her face with its large head.
Usually, when the large snake came back with prey, it would be very eager to ask for praise at this time.
But today, it didn’t seem to want praise. Instead, it kept nuzzling her face with its head, and would even lick her from time to time.
“Alright, you don’t have to comfort me. I’m fine now. Humans are strange. One moment they’re sad, the next they’re fine. You don’t have to make such a big fuss every time.”
“Also, you can nuzzle me with your head, but can you not lick me?”
Yu Chujin skillfully wiped the saliva from her face.
Negotiation was ineffective, because the large snake licked her again.
Yu Chujin started to go crazy, “You’re licking me, right? You won’t listen, right? Fine, I’ll lick you back.”
She was about to lick it. She had thought it would be very disgusted and would immediately retreat, but unexpectedly, its eyes lit up, its small claws stomped on the ground, and its face was full of expectation.
Yu Chujin was silent, very silent.
