Chapter 52 p2: A-Zhao
Wen Zhao couldn’t tell if she had gone down on her own initiative as if possessed, or if Jiang Zao had pulled her down. By the time she came to her senses, the two of them were already entangled in the water.
Jiang Zao, who had only wanted to tease her, also didn’t expect things to turn out like this.
Her somewhat clumsy skills were quickly defeated. Jiang Zao retreated repeatedly until she was cornered against a rock. Wen Zhao still considerately cushioned the back of her head with her hand.
The kiss moved to behind her ear, then slid down her neck. Her voice had already changed its tone.
“Wen… Wen Zhao… where did you learn this? You… you haven’t been in a relationship before, have you?”
“That disc…” The person who was buried in their work couldn’t be bothered to speak, and was concise.
“Didn’t… didn’t you throw it away?”
“I threw it away after I finished watching it.”
“You…”
Before Jiang Zao could finish, the water rippled. She could barely stand and was lifted up and sat on a rock.
“Don’t…”
“Don’t be afraid.”
Wen Zhao patiently soothed her nervousness. Fearing that she was cold, she also casually pulled a piece of clothing and draped it over her shoulder.
“Put your feet on my shoulders. Yes, just like that… if you’re uncomfortable, you can call a stop at any time.”
Wen Zhao was like a devout believer. She knelt on both knees, straightened her back, and only focused on the matter at hand.
The water rippled in circles. Jiang Zao could no longer tell where the sound of the water was coming from.
“Wen… Wen Zhao…”
“I’m here.”
Wen Zhao took the opportunity to reach out and intertwine their fingers. The legs that were on her shoulders gradually lost their balance.
Wen Zhao reached out another hand and held her steady.
The stacked waves pushed her to the shore. Jiang Zao’s voice was already broken. “A-Zhao… A-Zhao…”
Scattered raindrops dripped from the rocks into the water.
“I’m here, I’m here.”
Wen Zhao held her in her arms.
Jiang Zao’s half-open and half-closed eyelashes were still covered with dewdrops. She said in a small and timid voice, “I want to go back.”
“Alright~”
Wen Zhao was in a very good mood. She pulled her to the bank and helped her change into clean clothes first. When she returned to the small wooden cabin, she let out a loud sneeze.
Fortunately, the fire had just been started. Wen Zhao put a few more pieces of firewood inside and made the fire burn brightly.
Jiang Zao was holding a bowl of ginger soup, curled up on the bed. She looked up and saw that water was still dripping from the ends of her hair. She reached out and handed her the cup. “Change out of your wet clothes and come and warm up.”
“Alright.”
Wen Zhao did as she was told and sat down beside her. When she was changing, Jiang Zao looked at her abs in a daze.
“What’s wrong?”
Jiang Zao, as if possessed, reached out and touched the winding, centipede-like scar on her stomach.
“Time flies. I was the one who stitched this up…”
Before she could finish, Wen Zhao had already grabbed her hand, her voice slightly hoarse. “Little Zao, don’t move.”
Jiang Zao belatedly remembered the scene by the hot spring, and her face turned as red as a ripe tomato. She wished she could bite off her own tongue.
“I… I…”
“I like it when you call me A-Zhao. Can you call me that again?”
“A-Zhao…”
And so, in one “A-Zhao” after another, the sky darkened, and at some point, snowflakes began to fall again, landing on the branches.
When their passion was at its peak, Jiang Zao’s ear caught the sound of a plastic bag being torn. “When… when did you get this?”
“I got it when we were out collecting supplies before. I thought… it might come in handy, so I took it.”
Jiang Zao didn’t know whether to praise her for her “foresight” or to say that she had “premeditated” it.
At this moment, she could no longer be bothered with so much.
Wen Zhao’s voice was low and filled with infinite pity.
The temperature in the room rose. Even though both of them were now a little dazed, she still endured it and asked the question.
“Little Zao, can I?”
Can our flesh, our souls, be entangled together, and never be separated from now on?
“You… close your eyes.”
Wen Zhao did as she was told and closed her eyes.
Jiang Zao turned over, took something from the bedside, perhaps a silk scarf, and covered her eyes.
“I’ll do it myself.”

It wasn’t until the chirping of birds and insects in the early morning, accompanied by the crackling sound of the walkie-talkie that had fallen under the bed, that the two of them were awakened. Wen Zhao took off the restraint on her eyes and saw that Jiang Zao was just muttering a few words with her eyes closed and then fell into a deep sleep again. She printed a kiss on her forehead and then carefully withdrew her arm.
Although she was very careful, when she withdrew her arm, Jiang Zao still groggily opened her eyes.
“Where… are you going?”
Wen Zhao patted her head and tucked the messy strands of hair by her cheek behind her ear.
“I’m going to wash these dirty clothes. It’s still early. You can sleep a little longer.”
Jiang Zao hummed a few words, hugged the quilt, and turned over. Wen Zhao tucked her in, then got dressed and got up. She picked up the walkie-talkie that had been ringing since just now from the floor.
She carried the basin and walked to the open space outside the door before she pressed the call button. “Little Mi, it’s me. What’s wrong?”
“You didn’t come back all night. Grandma was so worried.”
Wen Zhao was a little embarrassed. “We hunted a roe deer yesterday. It was too late when we came down the mountain, so we spent a night at the small wooden cabin. We’ll be back in the afternoon.”
“Oh, oh, it’s good that you’re okay.”
Hearing their news, Little Mi’s heart also settled back down. “What about Big Sister Jiang?”
“You…” Wen Zhao rarely paused.
“Your Big Sister Jiang is still sleeping.”
Li Mi didn’t think much of it and shouted at the kitchen.
“Grandma, Big Sister Jiang is still sleeping!”
Jiang Wuni’s familiar voice came from the walkie-talkie.
“You brat, I hope you sleep to death!”
Wen Zhao quickly moved the walkie-talkie away.
“Then I’ll hang up now. I’ll get some firewood and start a fire.”
While she was busy outside the door, she bent her index finger and whistled. Not long after, a yellow and black shadow came running down from the mountain and came to her side.
Wen Zhao patted its head and took a piece of the roe deer meat they had hunted yesterday from the woven bag and threw it to Kele.
“I’m going to the stream to wash clothes. You stay here and watch over Little Zao.”
Kele let out a whimper, very dissatisfied that she had called it down from the mountain, but it still buried its head and ate.
Although all the zombies in the village had been eliminated, and there were no animals in the mountains that could pose a threat to her, Wen Zhao still started a fire and settled everything before she left the small wooden cabin.
When she came back from the stream after washing the clothes and bed sheet, and was hanging the bed sheet on the rope outside the small wooden cabin, Jiang Zao had also gotten up.
Wen Zhao pushed the door open and saw her sitting on the bed wrapped in a quilt. She smiled. “You’re awake?”
Jiang Zao nodded. The person who had been so bold last night, but at this moment, the tips of her ears were a little red, and her eyes were a little evasive.
“Yes. My clothes…”
“I’ve washed them. They’re all quick-drying clothes. If you dry them by the fire, you should be able to wear them soon.”
Jiang Zao’s gaze fell on the wooden basin she was holding, and she couldn’t help but shout in her heart, “Heavens!”
Then she lay back down.
How intense were they last night!
Wen Zhao looked at her, wrapped in a quilt like a quail, and laughed.
“Sleep a little longer. You can get up for lunch later.”
After lunch, Jiang Zao’s clothes were almost dry. She put on her jacket, packed her things, and was about to go out when Wen Zhao pointed to her neck. “Little Zao…”
“What’s wrong?”
Jiang Zao belatedly realized what she was talking about and her face turned red. She zipped up her windbreaker to the highest point.
“Let’s go.”
From the small wooden cabin, the way down the mountain was not steep, but Wen Zhao kept looking back, as if she were afraid she would trip and fall.
“Little Zao, are you tired?”
“Are you thirsty? Do you want me to carry your backpack?”
“We’ve walked so far. Do you want to rest in front?”
When she turned her head for the fifth time and said these useless words, a cold ice axe was pressed against her waist.
Jiang Zao whispered in her ear.
“I’m really fine. But if you look back one more time, I’ll kill you.”
Wen Zhao could only swallow and nod in agreement.
It was already afternoon when they got home.
After dinner, Jiang Zao went straight to her room, threw herself on the bed, and let out a big yawn, preparing to catch up on sleep.
As she was rubbing her sore waist, she was still thinking before she fell into darkness, “Damn it, is she an ox?”
She had thought her stamina was very good, but she had to admit defeat.
Wen Zhao, who had returned home, finally had a chance to take a good shower. When the hot water hit her body, a sharp pain came from her back, and she couldn’t help but flinch.
Back in her room, she picked up a mirror and only then saw that there were several deep and shallow red marks on her back, scratched by fingernails.
Wen Zhao hissed lightly. “Her grip is quite strong.”
Fortunately, she had reinforced that small bed.
***
Thanks to this hunted roe deer, they didn’t have to worry about their food during the New Year. On New Year’s Eve, Jiang Wuni showed off her skills again and made a delicious dish in a different way—
Iron pot stewed roe deer.
The game was still a little gamey, so it was only suitable for a heavy numbing and spicy cooking method. The roe deer meat was soaked overnight to remove the blood, and before it was cooked, it was marinated with ginger and garlic water for half a day.
Jiang Wuni sprinkled in a handful of the dried chilies she had grown herself. The wild Sichuan peppercorns and litsea cubeba were all picked from the mountain.
After stir-frying over high heat until fragrant, she added a little yellow wine to remove the gamey smell and enhance the fragrance. The drinks and things they had found before had all expired, but this kind of alcohol only became more mellow with age.
Besides being used for cooking, it could also be drunk.
Just like now.
Wen Zhao took the warmed yellow wine from the stove. There was also rock sugar and wolfberries inside. The aroma was fragrant when it was poured out.
Li Mi was also a little greedy.
“Big sister, can I drink this?”
Jiang Zao brought over the osmanthus honey water she had made for her.
“No, you can only drink this.”
“Ah? Why?! I’m all grown up!”
Li Mi fell on the table with a thud.
She didn’t drink it, but there was a dog that wanted to. Kele stretched its neck, wanting to reach for her cup. Li Mi quickly blocked it with her hand and pushed its dog head away. The whole room burst into laughter.
Jiang Wuni picked up her cup and was also a little emotional.
“No matter what the world is like outside, we still have to celebrate the New Year. Unknowingly, this is the third New Year’s Eve we’ve spent together…”
Li Mi also squinted her eyes and smiled.
“We’ll still be together for many, many more New Year’s Eves, so many that even Kele won’t be able to walk!”
Kele howled.
Wen Zhao also raised her wine glass.
“Little Mi is right. No matter how difficult the world is, as long as we are together and our hearts are united as one, we are not afraid of anything!”
Jiang Zao also smiled and reached out, clinking her glass with theirs. “To the countless New Year’s Eves in the future, Happy New Year.”
“Happy New Year!”
They, who were so confident at that time, did not know that this was the last New Year’s Eve they would spend together.
As Wen Zhao had once said:
“Maybe you only know what fate is when you don’t know what fate is.”
