Chapter 23: Bitten
Sang Jing found the source of the incense smell she had detected. It was the lucky bag Shen Jue had brought down with her, probably the one Ying Laishi had given her that day. Down here, it must have encountered some evil entity and burned up while protecting Shen Jue.
Then where is Xie Yu?
“What have you seen down here?” Sang Jing asked, thinking of Shen Jue’s special constitution.
Shen Jue’s eyes widened, her lips trembling. “Snakes, very big snakes.”
Snakes again.
Sang Jing was starting to lose patience. If something happened to Xie Yu down here, how would she explain it to her teacher?
Before her teacher left, he had said he would use an opportunity to test whether she was ready to graduate. Sang Jing had prepared for a long time, waited for a long time, until Xie Yu came along.
A ghost with a suspicious cause of death, carrying malevolence, and with incomplete memories—no matter how you looked at it, this was the test Sang Jing had been waiting for.
In Sang Jing’s eyes, Xie Yu was a difficult problem, and she needed to provide the most perfect answer to her teacher.
And now, she had lost her problem.
This wouldn’t do.
Sang Jing touched the small gourd at her waist. Inside was the evil entity she had captured at the hospital.
Opening the mouth of the gourd, the evil entity eagerly shot out, only to be seized by the throat and restrained by Sang Jing.
It still looked as it did when it was stripped from Xiao Yu’s body—emaciated like a skeleton, without a physical form or consciousness, a man-made thing that fed on the life force of the living.
Sang Jing bit her fingertip and pressed her blood-stained finger on the evil entity’s glabella.
As she chanted, the original skeletal body began to slowly fill out.
This thing fed on life force; it was essentially a storage and conversion device. After Sang Jing had stripped it off, she had originally planned to hand it over to the Special Investigation Team for investigation, as someone was using this kind of thing to extend their life. But now, she had to find Xie Yu first. The matter of life extension could wait.
Tan Wei watched Sang Jing’s actions from the side, took two steps to Bei Shan’s side, and asked in a low voice, “Are you sure she’s not a Ghost Master?”
This move of dotting the eyes was a classic Ghost Master technique.
Bei Shan hummed. “Her teacher seems to be a Ghost Master.”
Tan Wei frowned and looked at her. “?”
Her teacher is a Ghost Master? But she isn’t?
“Then who is her teacher?” Tan Wei asked again.
Seeing Sang Jing’s skilled movements, even if she wasn’t a Ghost Master, she could do this much. Her teacher must be no ordinary person. And Tan Wei knew all the famous Ghost Masters of the current generation. She was a little curious about which senior Sang Jing was a student of.
Bei Shan thought for a moment. It seemed Sang Jing had mentioned it before. “Her teacher’s name is… I’ve forgotten a bit. I think her surname is Ji!”
“Ji?” Tan Wei pondered in her heart.
In the previous generation and the one before that, were there any Ghost Masters with the surname Ji?
“Ji Zhi? I think that’s the name,” Bei Shan said and even nodded.
Tan Wei froze. She slowly turned her head and stared at Bei Shan. “What did you say? What’s her teacher’s name?”
Seeing her strong reaction, Bei Shan began to doubt her own memory. “Ji… Ji Zhi?”
Tan Wei’s legs went weak, and she was supported by Ah Qing beside her.
The Special Investigation Team might not have a deep understanding of the Ghost Master lineage, but ever since the Celestial Masters and Ghost Masters had made peace, the Xuanmen’s family tree no longer just recorded Celestial Masters; the two lineages coexisted.
On the first page of the family tree: the founder of the Celestial Master Dao, Yun Zaiqing, and the founder of the Ghost Master lineage, Ji Zhi.
Tan Wei couldn’t believe it. Sang Jing was actually Ji Zhi’s student. But if she really was Ji Zhi’s student, then holding the Wuchang warrant, being acquainted with the Wuchang emissaries, and knowing forbidden arts and secret techniques—it all made sense.
Bei Shan saw Tan Wei’s loss of composure and asked curiously, “What’s wrong? Does Vice-Chairman Tan know her teacher?”
“No, I don’t,” Tan Wei said, taking a deep breath.
I don’t know her, but I see her every day and even offer incense to her.
While the two were talking on the side, Sang Jing had already completed the dotting of the eyes. Using blood as a medium to give life to the evil entity, from now on, this thing was considered hers. It was different from raising a ghost. A ghost was fed with incense, while this thing, having eaten Sang Jing’s blood, would feed on blood.
The evil spirit and its master were connected. If something happened to the evil spirit, the master would suffer a backlash.
“Go, find her,” Sang Jing ordered the evil spirit.
Although the evil spirit had a human form, it had no facial features. It perceived things entirely through aura.
After receiving the order, the evil spirit turned in a direction and passed straight through the wall.
Sang Jing had a connection with the evil spirit. She turned and walked towards the tomb gate, and the others hurried to follow.
Bei Shan supported Shen Jue and saw her taking out a small notebook to write and draw.
This scene was a bit familiar. Cui Wangshu also liked to take notes in a notebook. She would write down everything related to metaphysical arts. She was a very diligent and sensible student, which made Bei Shan feel very at ease.
Seeing a vision of Cui Wangshu, Bei Shan smiled and glanced at Shen Jue’s notebook, and then her smile froze on her face.
What is she writing?
Sang Jing’s personal file? She even has to record the number of moles on her face?
The next second, Shen Jue suddenly looked over. Bei Shan didn’t have time to retract her gaze and was caught red-handed.
Shen Jue covered her notebook and asked politely, “Thank you. My name is Shen Jue. What’s your name?”
Bei Shan was embarrassed. “Bei Shan.”
Shen Jue nodded and turned to the other side to write.
The tip of the pen made a rustling sound—
Bei Shan, peeking at my notebook.
After turning through several tomb passages, Sang Jing sensed that the evil spirit had stopped. It had found Xie Yu.
She quickened her pace and ran. Amidst the bumps, a piercing electric sound came from her ear.
“Sang Jing? Sang Jing? Can you hear me?” It was Wenren Jin’s voice, very urgent.
Sang Jing raised her hand to her earpiece. “I can.”
“Are you all together now? I can only see your location here. Why are you on Yingyang Mountain?” Wenren Jin’s side let out a sigh of relief upon hearing Sang Jing’s voice. The heart that had been in her throat could finally be put down.
Sang Jing tilted her head and saw the three people following behind her. “Yes, we’re together. We were swept into a tomb by the whirlpool.”
“A tomb?” Wenren Jin thought for a moment. Yingyang Mountain was indeed in Xianling City. “Alright, I’ll bring people over now. Stay in touch.”
“Alright.”
“Hiss—”
Sang Jing raised her hand and covered her face. It felt like she had been bitten.
The evil spirit? It must have been hit.
Sang Jing saw the chamber in front of her, took off her earpiece, and handed it to Tan Wei.
Tan Wei took it with both hands.
Her respectful attitude attracted Bei Shan’s attention. Bei Shan had a look of confusion on her face. The dignified vice-chairman of the Xuanmen is so polite?
Having found Xie Yu, Sang Jing also let out a sigh of relief. She had been running all this way and was actually sweating in this cold and gloomy tomb.
The tomb gate was half-open. Sang Jing remained vigilant, holding her breath and turning sideways.
Just as she fully entered the chamber, her wrist was suddenly hit. The flashlight fell to the ground and rolled a few times. Then Sang Jing was pinned against the stone gate. The heavy stone gate made a loud bang, directly blocking Bei Shan and the others outside.
“Sang Jing!” Bei Shan pounded on the stone gate, calling her in a panic.
Tan Wei quickly said, “Ah Qing!”
Ah Qing stepped forward, pushed the stone gate, but it didn’t move an inch. She shook her head at Tan Wei. “The gate is sealed from the inside.”
Inside the stone gate, the beam of the flashlight hit the distance. The protrusions on the stone gate dug into Sang Jing’s back, causing a sharp pain.
A cold ghost leaned against her, one hand tightly gripping her collar. It was bent over, its head bowed, resting on her shoulder, its entire ghostly being trembling.
“Sang Jing,” Xie Yu’s voice was a little faint.
Sang Jing saw the uncontrollable malevolence on her, churning and threatening to swallow her whole.
“It’s me,” Sang Jing said. “Don’t be afraid.”
Sang Jing thought she was scared.
Xie Yu leaned against Sang Jing for a long time without speaking. It wasn’t until Sang Jing was about to push her away that she said in a low voice, “Sang Jing, I’m hungry. You smell so good.”
With that, she was about to move towards Sang Jing’s neck.
Sang Jing: “…”
“Get off.”
Sang Jing grabbed Xie Yu’s hand and pulled her away, then bent down to pick up the flashlight. The light revealed nine ghosts lying scattered on the ground, as well as an evil spirit. The evil spirit’s face had been bitten, and there was a circle of teeth marks on it. At this moment, it was facing Sang Jing with a somewhat wronged expression.
The evil spirit was given life by Sang Jing’s blood and carried Sang Jing’s aura. And Xie Yu, having gotten used to the incense Sang Jing lit, smelled the familiar scent when she was extremely hungry. How could she resist taking a bite?
Fortunately, fortunately, Xie Yu hadn’t eaten these ghosts. The situation wasn’t too bad.
Sang Jing looked down and saw Xie Yu sniffing her hand.
She reached out, pinched her cheek, and lifted her head. Sang Jing’s fingers quickly moved across her face. After one stroke, a faint talisman mark appeared on the lower half of Xie Yu’s face and neck.
Xie Yu looked at Sang Jing, her gaze falling on the bead of sweat that slid down her temple to her chin.
“Endure it. I’ll feed you when we get out,” Sang Jing said, then paused and added, “a meal.”
Xie Yu nodded, then felt her mouth being sealed. “…”
“Go open the door,” Sang Jing said to the evil spirit.
The evil spirit got up and went to the stone gate to push it.
Soon, the stone gate opened. Bei Shan was the first to rush in. Seeing Sang Jing standing there unharmed, with Xie Yu beside her, the tension on her face finally eased.
Seeing the ghosts on the ground, whose souls were almost dissipated, Ah Qing raised an eyebrow and looked at Xie Yu in surprise.
These ghosts were clearly not injured by metaphysical arts, but by a fight between ghosts.
So these ghosts were beaten into this state by Xie Yu.
“Could these be the nine people who were used to fill the lake thirty years ago?” Bei Shan asked.
Tan Wei nodded. “It’s very likely.”
“Come and see.”
Sang Jing called out to them.
Bei Shan and Tan Wei looked over and saw Sang Jing standing in front of a stone wall. They walked over.
Shen Jue was already afraid of the dark. Although Tan Wei had given her a flashlight, she was still scared. Seeing the two people beside her go over, she followed with trembling shoulders.
“What’s wrong?” Bei Shan asked.
Sang Jing didn’t speak, but moved the flashlight beam across the stone wall.
Bei Shan and Tan Wei both saw a crack in the light. There was a hidden stone gate in this stone wall!
This stone gate was a mechanism door. Sang Jing and the others fumbled around for a while and found the mechanism to open it. It was a coiled snake carved on the stone wall.
The stone gate slowly rotated open, and two beams of light shone in at the same time.
A strong, fragrant smell rushed out, carrying a dampness.
The space behind the stone gate was very small. There was a shrine, and in front of the shrine were an incense burner, offerings, and a kneeling cushion.
Sang Jing’s nose twitched, smelling the scent of incense in the air. “This incense is from a few days ago.”
Bei Shan: “Someone has been continuously making offerings to this shrine.”
Ah Qing waved her hand, and the door of the shrine suddenly opened, revealing a coiled snake statue inside.
Shen Jue’s pupils suddenly constricted, and she couldn’t help but take a step back.
In her eyes, a phantom of a human body with a snake’s tail was suspended above the snake statue in the shrine.
