Chapter 17: Raining Fish
Zhang Can’er opened her eyes excitedly, only to find the group gathered together, discussing something.
She got up and walked over. Xiao Feng turned her head, and upon seeing she was awake, she smiled. “Sister Can’er, you’re awake? I can’t believe you could fall asleep here. Didn’t you sleep well last night?”
The others also turned to look at her. Zhang Can’er just smiled and said, “Just resting my eyes. What are you all discussing?”
Xiao Feng was about to answer, but Wan Feng cut in. “We’re discussing how to lure the Mutants outside away. After all, finding a car is a time-consuming task, and the food supply here is abundant, so we plan to use this place as a temporary base and want to plan it out properly.”
Wan Feng didn’t look at her but stared at the floor plan she had drawn on the table. She had just gone out through the back door, climbed onto the roof, and briefly observed the nearby buildings and terrain, then drew this map.
Hearing this, Zhang Can’er walked over and stared at the floor plan with her.
The floor plan was still relatively simple, only roughly distinguishing the visible areas, but the drawing was neat.
“Have you come up with any solutions?”
Wan Feng shook her head. “No. They’re all arguing about going out and chopping up the Mutants. Just now, Xiao Feng and Xiao An acquired skills. One can conjure fireballs, and the other can… make it rain fish. So they’re all very excited and want to go out and fight the Mutants together.”
Wan Feng looked up at Zhang Can’er, a hint of helplessness in her eyes. The corners of her lips were turned up in a somewhat helpless manner.
Zhang Can’er was stunned for a moment. So that’s why everyone’s mood suddenly improved, she thought. They’ve awakened skills.
She looked up at the two of them and smiled. “Congratulations, you’ve become stronger.”
“What are you talking about? Xiao Feng’s skill is one thing, but what the hell is mine? Raining fish? Fish falling from the sky? What, am I supposed to let the fish smash the Mutants to death?” Xiao An said with a worried frown and bitter face.
Xiao Feng and the others couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
Xiao An grabbed Xiao Feng, who was laughing the loudest, and subjected her to ‘torture’.
After they had fooled around enough, the group gathered together again. With Zhang Can’er joining them, they were noticeably more obedient.
“I remember the house opposite is Sister Lin’s. They have two cars. One that Sister Lin bought herself, and another that her younger brother, Xiao Xiong, bought. They even invited Sister Can’er over for dinner back then. I tagged along for a meal too,” Xiao Feng said.
“By the way, doesn’t Auntie Zhang’s family have one too?” Xiao Li said.
Xiao Feng glanced at her and thought for a moment. “The Auntie Zhang from this house? I’m not familiar with her family. But I remember her son hasn’t been back for several years, right? To keep her son from leaving, she even smashed his car, just to keep him by her side. You’re not talking about the car that’s been abandoned in the garage for a long time, are you?”
Xiao Li frowned slightly. “I remember her son came back. I saw him drive back during the New Year last year. He’s been at home ever since.”
“I know about that. It’s not her son, it’s an adopted son. A lot of people were asking about it at the time. I heard it when I was buying soy sauce for my mom. But this adopted son couldn’t stand her either. I remember they had a big fight a few days before the apocalypse broke out. They parted on bad terms, and the adopted son drove off. The car in the garage now is probably the wrecked, abandoned one from before,” Xiao Hou chimed in.
Xiao Feng and Xiao Li both turned to look at him. Xiao Hou scratched his head, looking at them with a puzzled expression. “What, what’s wrong?”
“Where did you hear about the fight?” Xiao Feng asked.
“Oh, I happened to be buying wine for Uncle Jiang at the time and saw the whole farce. Everyone from outside the village came. It was Uncle Bao’s son, Brother Qiang, who handled it. Auntie Zhang even cried until she fainted afterward.”
“Tsk, with all this drama happening between the inside and outside of the village, I had no idea there was such a good show to watch,” Xiao Feng said with a hint of disappointment.
Zhang Can’er smiled and patted her on the head. “Alright, let’s get back to business.”
“Ouch! Sister Can’er, can’t you be a little gentler?”
“I didn’t hit you that hard. Let’s talk business first. We’ll split into two groups to find a car, each going to a different place. Who wants to go to Xiao Lin’s house opposite?” Zhang Can’er finished speaking and turned to look at the group.
“Me!” Xiao Feng raised her hand with lightning speed.
The others reacted and quickly raised their hands as well.
“Hmm… how about this? I’ll take Xiao Hao and Xiao Li to Xiao Lin’s house. Sister Feng will take the rest of you to Uncle Yu’s house, the first one on the opposite side. Is this grouping feasible?”
Xiao Hou’s lips moved, but in the end, he didn’t say no. The others had no objections either.
As Wan Feng folded the floor plan, she looked at Zhang Can’er and asked, “Is the wealth gap between the inside and outside of your village that big?”
Zhang Can’er was stunned for a moment, then nodded. “None of the young people in the village stay. First, the village is too poor. They don’t dare to say they’re from here. Second, before the road was paved, there were no concrete roads in the village. The one you see now was only paved half a year ago. The main road is the same; it was specially built for cars to get in.
“But it’s different outside the village. The houses outside the village are almost all built along the main road, so transportation is convenient. Those who made money could drive straight back. Plus, with the Federation’s poverty alleviation program later, the houses were renovated. The gap between the inside and outside of the village just grew larger and larger.”
Wan Feng frowned and nodded, not asking any more questions. “Let’s first discuss how to eliminate the Mutants gathered outside. I’m afraid the noise here will attract those two Progenitors. It will be troublesome to go out and find a car then.”
Zhang Can’er thought so too. After nodding, she looked at Xiao Feng and Xiao An. “No need to discuss. You two, come with me. Let’s see how powerful your skills are.”
“Okay!” the two said in unison.
“Sister Can’er, what about us?” Xiao Li asked.
“You guys can plan the route for finding a car with Sister Feng first.”
“Okay, then you all be careful.”
Wan Feng turned to stare at her for a while, an unreadable emotion in her eyes. “You don’t need my help?”
Zhang Can’er smiled at her. “No need. I’m confident.”
“Okay.”
Zhang Can’er didn’t linger. She took her kitchen cleaver and led Xiao Feng and Xiao An out the door.
As soon as they went out, they heard a loud noise. The rolling shutter itself was loud, and now it was being constantly rammed. The sound was deafening.
The two Mutants in the bathroom had already broken down the door and were now heading toward the small shop.
Zhang Can’er reacted quickly, throwing down two Spike Seeds. The seeds grew rapidly, piercing the feet of both Mutants and pinning them to the ground.
“Xiao Feng!”
Xiao Feng came back to her senses and quickly conjured two fireballs, throwing them over. The two Mutants were quickly engulfed in flames, and soon, a burnt smell wafted out.
But the smell was very unpleasant. Zhang Can’er couldn’t describe it; it was definitely not like the smell of roasted meat.
A few minutes later, the two Mutants were completely blackened, their hands and feet all carbonized.
