Chapter 5
A fish-belly white appeared in the east, and the dawn’s first light tore open a slit, penetrating through the window.
“Qinghe, listen to me…”
Ji Qianqian’s voice was plaintive, her almond eyes brimming with tears. Twisting her waist, she tried to embrace Yan Qinghe, regardless of shame.
She had once shattered her lover’s self-esteem into beads; in this life, she would piece them back together one by one.
With a whoosh, the white quilt was swept away like fallen leaves by the autumn wind. Yan Qinghe coldly lifted the covers and tossed them onto Ji Qianqian, burying the tantalizing view of her body.
Eye-catching, but annoying!
Whether Ji Qianqian was intentionally seducing her or unintentionally enticing her, she would turn a blind eye.
“Do you want to tell me it was all a misunderstanding?” Yan Qinghe lifted the corner of her lips in self-mockery.
Back then, she was so blinded by love that even when Ji Qianqian stole R7, she forgave her. R7 was Aunt Wan’s life’s work; the only person she felt sorry for was Xi Zhaowan.
Back then, she deceived herself, believing Ji Qianqian couldn’t let go of Yan Qing, and even started hating Yan Qing as well.
If she hadn’t gone to find Aunt Wan and clarified everything…
At that time, she was trapped in a desperate situation, filled with twisted emotions. Thinking back now, it was hard to even recognize herself.
Yan Qinghe sighed softly in her heart, covering her forehead, unwilling to recall those years. Some things were personal secrets; everyone had a past deep in their hearts that was hard to share with others…
Sometimes she thought, how great it would have been if their ill-fated relationship had ended right then.
But unfortunately, Qianqian saw her fourth diary.
**
Yan Qinghe hurriedly slipped on her shoes, picked up her phone, walked to the balcony, pressed a shortcut key, and scolded in a lowered voice, “Butler, who told you to let her in?”
“So what if she’s the eldest daughter of the Ji family? Did I give you permission to let her in?”
“The cooperation with the Ji Group? Forget it! I don’t want to see this happen again!”
Tossing the phone back onto the bed, Yan Qinghe pulled open the curtains and crossed her arms, presenting only her tall, slender back silently to Ji Qianqian. The meaning of seeing the guest out was unspoken but clear.
Her cold, solidified posture was shrouded in an invisible fire of irritability, like a silent volcano that would erupt if Ji Qianqian came any closer.
She had thought that seeing Ji Qianqian again in this life would be peaceful.
But this inner restlessness became harder to dismiss the closer she got to the other’s scent.
…
“Ji Qianqian, I’m tired.” She raised her pale, pretty face and compromised.
The girl curled up on the bed lifted her small face, blooming like a flower opening its petals, tears dripping like dew. “Qinghe, do you still like me?”
“Or is it that you like that person?”
[Or is it that you like her?]
The voice in her memory overlapped with Ji Qianqian’s voice now. Yan Qinghe’s heart suddenly jolted. She turned abruptly to look at Ji Qianqian, trying to discern the true meaning in her pupils.
The phone screen on the bed lit up with a reply from Mu Sixue.
[Did you need me for something last night?]
Ji Qianqian straightened the phone, tapped on the name displayed, raised her eyebrows, and looked up.
Yan Qinghe’s expression gradually softened. She let out a breath and sat casually on the swivel ergonomic chair by the desk. “Whether I like someone or not, what does it have to do with you?”
She wanted to see what Miss Ji was up to.
Reborn once, just because she ignored her for four years, did it spark her competitive desire?
Just like when she chased Yan Qing back then—half out of competitiveness, half for the inheritance rights.
Laughable. Now, she didn’t care in the slightest whether Ji Qianqian loved Yan Qing or not.
Just like in this life, whoever she liked was none of Ji Qianqian’s damn business.
Ji Qianqian: “The woman you kissed at the bar last night, was her name Mu Sixue?”
Before Yan Qinghe could mentally prepare herself, she watched wide-eyed as Ji Qianqian found the number from the text message and dialed it back.
Fast! Dumbfounded.
“Hello, is this Miss Mu Sixue? That’s right, this is Qinghe’s phone.”
“You ask where Qinghe is? I’m on Qinghe’s bed, and Qinghe is by my side. Where do you think Qinghe would be?”
Ji Qianqian smiled beautifully, hooked her legs off the bed, and the white dress that had slipped down to the covers disappeared, leaving only thin white safety shorts. Her long, slender, straight legs stepped gracefully, lotus-like, until she landed softly in Qinghe’s lap.
Yan Qinghe sucked in a breath of cold air. Ji Qianqian sat boldly on her lap, lips facing the phone, her watery eyes glancing sideways at her.
Mu Sixue’s voice was as cool and clear as usual. “Put Summer on the phone.”
What is Ji Qianqian trying to do?!
Yan Qinghe reached around Ji Qianqian, stretching her arm to grab the phone. Ji Qianqian pressed against her neck, preventing her from reaching it. She blinked her almond eyes slightly; the tearful look from five minutes ago vanished without a trace.
She wore a radiant smile on her face, but the corners of her mouth were stubborn, her red lips bitten into a aggrieved curve.
“Summer, sounds really nice. Qinghe, did she give you that English name?”
“Xue is snow, you are summer. One is winter, one is summer. Tsk, what a match!”
Yan Qinghe: “Ji Qianqian, don’t talk nonsense, she is my Senior Sister.”
Enough! She wanted to say. She snatched at the phone, wanting to apologize to the Senior Sister.
Ji Qianqian pressed a finger against her lips. “Just one last question. Don’t worry, I’ll leave after asking, I won’t bother you.”
“Senior Sister Mu, what is your relationship with Qinghe?” Her tone was like the red line on a thermometer, dropping straight down to an icy blue coldness.
Sorry, in this life and world, even if she reached the Yellow River, her heart would not die! (She wouldn’t give up until the bitter end).
She thought Mu Sixue would pause, hesitate, or hem and haw, like any secret admirer whose feelings were exposed.
Unexpectedly, the other party spoke with a lazy tone, as if she had just finished grooming after waking up. “My relationship with Summer? Good friends, I suppose that counts.”
Not reluctant at all. A junior sister counts as a good friend. A very special junior sister.
Mu Sixue gently tucked her long hair behind her ear. In front of the vanity mirror, half a stick of lipstick in shade #304, pure red, was slowly and carefully applied, making her lips moist and brilliant from corner to cupid’s bow.
Finished applying, she walked gracefully to the small round table in the garden, placed the phone down, and pressed speakerphone.
“Just good friends?”
“Mhm, probably a much better relationship than yours with Summer,” the kind of… good friend.
She had a habit of morning reading every day. In another half hour, she had to go to work at the Wei Group; the morning reading time was precious.
A fresh green cover, a collection of poems by a foreign poet, was opened on the table.
Ji Qianqian: ?
Why did Mu Sixue think her relationship with Qinghe was stronger than her own?
Mu Sixue blinked her long lashes, her slender fingers turning a page of poetry, multitasking: “Miss Qianqian is her ex, right?”
The spacious, open-air sound from the other end sank heavily onto Ji Qianqian’s chest sentence by sentence. Ji Qianqian bit her lip; silence was admission.
Mu Sixue changed the subject suddenly: “Has Miss Qianqian read R. Browning’s poetry?”
Ji Qianqian tilted her head, narrowing her almond eyes: Browning, the poet. She knew him, but what did what Mu Sixue wanted to say have to do with her question?
A Beta girl who had gotten up around the same time, curling her just-woken long hair, her skin so white it was almost pale, thoughtfully brewed a cup of green tea for Mu Sixue. She strolled to the marble round table, raised her hand, and squeezed Mu Sixue’s shoulder.
Blinking, she pointed to the green tea in the glass and coughed lightly a few times.
Mu Sixue nodded, gently stroking the back of the girl’s hand that hung down to her collarbone. Her red lips sipped lightly; the tea leaves floated and sank, fragrant in her mouth, sweet amidst the bitterness.
On the other side, Yan Qinghe’s brows were furrowed into peaks. She still needed to invite Mu Sixue to help at her company; what storm was Ji Qianqian trying to stir up by offending her?
A thin layer of sweat broke out on her forehead. She heard Mu Sixue’s voice, dyed with the scent of ink, wandering through the phone waves, self-aware amidst the clarity, calm as if wrapped in mountain snow—
“In Browning’s twenty-line poem, there is a line: Some exes, full of desire to return to the position of ordinary friends, cannot be retained by the lover. ”
As the saying goes, an ex from a messy breakup is worse than a dog.
Mu Sixue’s reply was extremely graceful, implying that an ex is not even as good as an ordinary friend.
“So, Miss Qianqian, do you think your relationship with Qinghe is better than mine, this good friend?”
