In the cold winter day, facing such a scorching furnace of warmth, it was hard for Lin Zixi to make the choice to refuse. She hesitated for a moment, then cautiously extended her foot, probing toward Ye Can’s side.
Ye Can lowered her gaze to watch her, and upon seeing this, she pulled Lin Zixi straight into her arms, wrapping her body tightly around her from head to toe.
Lin Zixi suddenly fell into this fervent embrace, still a bit at a loss. But Ye Can leaned down and whispered softly by her ear, “Sleep. With me holding you, you won’t feel cold at all.”
Lin Zixi nodded, buried in her arms as she silently repeated to herself a hundred times, She’s a big dog, she’s a big dog. Gradually, she lost herself in this dizzyingly warm comfort and slowly drifted off to sleep.
That night, Lin Zixi slept very soundly, without a single dream.
After she fell asleep, Ye Can lay beside her just like every winter night before, staring for a long time in the darkness at Lin Zixi’s indistinct features.
She reached out, her thumb gently caressing the tender skin of Lin Zixi’s cheek, overwhelmed by a flood of thoughts in the silent night.
She didn’t know how much time passed before sleep finally claimed Ye Can. As she stroked Lin Zixi’s cheek, her eyelids drooped, and she slowly pressed a kiss to Lin Zixi’s hair before briefly slipping into a dream.
In that dream, she returned to the big tent where she first met Lin Zixi. In the snowy winter night, she sat before the ancient, heavy bianzhong, gently playing a melody.
As the sounds of the bianzhong rang out one by one, she turned back to look at the woman seated in the center of the tent. Dressed in white with ink-black hair, the woman seemed to sit at the center of the world, gazing at her with eyes full of tenderness.
Ye Can had never had such a fulfilling dream. This moment of peace gave her boundless sweetness and hope. She immersed herself in this fleeting happiness until the first light of dawn.
Morning came quickly. When the alarm woke Lin Zixi, it was the first time in her life she awoke in such a warm embrace.
Ye Can still had her encircled in her arms. Lin Zixi opened her bleary eyes to see Ye Can’s face, wearing a faint smile. “Awake? It’s still early. Want to sleep more?”
It took Lin Zixi a good while to process that Ye Can had slept in her bed last night. Pressed against Ye Can’s warm chest, she cautiously shifted backward and asked in a daze, “Didn’t you sleep last night?”
Ye Can blinked. “Thanks to you, I managed a short nap.” She paused for a long moment before adding, “It’s been a long time since I last fell asleep.”
Lin Zixi wriggled out of her arms and looked at her youthful face, her voice a little hoarse. “Did you sleep well? Any nightmares?”
Ye Can gazed at her and chuckled lightly. “No, quite the opposite—I had a good dream.”
“A good dream?” Lin Zixi looked puzzled, but Ye Can threw off the covers, got out of bed, and headed to the bathroom, sighing, “Yeah, a good dream.”
Ye Can smacked her lips, as if still savoring the sweetness of the dream. Only after entering the bathroom and splashing a handful of cold water on her face did she fully wake from it.
The biting chill made Ye Can hiss softly. She looked up at her reflection in the mirror, face dotted with water droplets, her mind clearing a bit.
Dreams are just dreams after all—just a fleeting moment of joy. But even so, it felt pretty nice.
Ye Can rubbed her face, thinking that having dreams like this while holding Lin Zixi might not be so bad in the future.
After washing up, Ye Can emerged from the bathroom. Lin Zixi was sitting on the bed wrapped in the blanket, calling room service. Seeing that Ye Can had washed her face, she hung up and said, “I ordered breakfast for you—remember to eat it later. If you’re free today, just hang out here.”
Ye Can ran her fingers through her long hair and glanced sideways at Lin Zixi. “I do have something. I’m going to play an extra today. Meng Zhiqiu said I’m getting more scenes.”
Lin Zixi frowned in confusion. “More scenes?”
Ye Can nodded and said earnestly to Lin Zixi, “The director liked that extra role before, so he’s adding scenes for me. Meng Zhiqiu wants me there today to shoot some scenes opposite her.”
Lin Zixi’s expression grew increasingly colorful. “You’re doing scenes opposite Meng Zhiqiu?”
Ye Can hummed in affirmation. “Yeah, they’ve added more. And roles with this much screen time should come with decent pay.” She paused, smiling a bit sheepishly. “I don’t really get this stuff. Can you come with me today and help negotiate the pay?”
Lin Zixi truly hadn’t expected that after picking up this little mad dog, she’d have to moonlight as her manager too. But given the situation, she really didn’t feel comfortable leaving Ye Can in anyone else’s hands.
Lin Zixi thought it over for a moment before replying, “Okay.”
After breakfast, Lin Zixi accompanied Ye Can to the set of Above the Throne.
The crew was preparing for the final major scene. Before they arrived, Ye Can had messaged Meng Zhiqiu on WeChat. Knowing they were coming, Meng Zhiqiu had her assistant Xiao Cai wait for them.
Xiao Cai met them and led Ye Can and Lin Zixi straight to the filming site.
The set was in the royal palace’s grand hall. Director Hou Ming, bundled in a down jacket, held the script and was directing the leads.
This scene was the grandest shot in Above the Throne.
After Prince Cheng Xiao Ming killed his brother and ascended the throne, he held a grand banquet in the palace. During the feast, ministers loyal to the late emperor’s Crown Prince attempted a rebellion in his name. Xiao Ming planned to use the opportunity to purge these disobedient officials.
But Xiao Can, harboring her own ambitions, seized the chance to strike at the banquet, stabbing Xiao Ming to death on the throne.
The scene was incredibly complex, with intriguing lines for all the characters. Hou Ming had been refining it for half a month and had shot most of it already. Now, with Xiao Can added, they were polishing the final shot.
When Ye Can arrived, Hou Ming was discussing the last scene with Feng Jianming.
Feng Jianming had different ideas about Xiao Ming being stabbed to death on the throne in the script. He waved the script as he debated with Hou Ming. “Xiao Can hasn’t had enough scenes opposite Prince Cheng yet, and her character isn’t fully established. Having her suddenly appear might not work—better to have him shot with arrows on the throne.”
Hou Ming dismissed the concern. “If the scenes aren’t enough, we can add them. After this, shoot a scene with Xiao Can to show brotherly harmony. That’d be great.”
“Is it your schedule? Jianming, I shot your big scenes a month early. You’ve had that slot free—plenty of time for a few days of filming.” Hou Ming patted the script, pleading earnestly. “Even if you want to see your wife and kid, finish these scenes first.”
Hou Ming turned to Meng Zhiqiu nearby. “Zhiqiu added a scene with Xiao Can despite her packed schedule. You’ve got time—shoot a few more takes.”
“That little one’s performance the day before yesterday was solid. Playing opposite her will satisfy your acting itch.”
Feng Jianming glanced at Meng Zhiqiu beside him and sighed helplessly. “Fine, a few more days it is.”
The actor who had planned to wrap early and take his daughter to Disney made his compromise.
Just then, Ye Can approached. Hou Ming lit up with a grin upon seeing her. “Hey, the little one’s here!”
Hou Ming beckoned. “Ye Can, come here.”
Ye Can led Lin Zixi straight over to Hou Ming. Before they even got close, Ye Can blurted out anxiously, “Director, I heard this extra role pays. How much are you offering me?”
The film emperor and empress on set were stunned by this newbie’s bluntness. Lin Zixi, trailing behind, raised a hand to silently cover her face—truly a newborn calf not fearing the tiger.
Everyone’s eyes turned to Ye Can, but she stood there utterly composed, staring straight at Hou Ming for an answer.
Hou Ming paused, then burst out laughing. “We do need to talk pay—after all, you’ll be here running extra duty for the next half month.”
Hou Ming eyed Ye Can and probed, “So, Ye Can, how much do you want?”
Negotiating pay in front of the director on a major production set—Ye Can was probably the first. Meng Zhiqiu was floored by her innocent lack of social savvy. Swallowing a sigh, she smiled and smoothed things over. “Director Hou, giving Ye Can this chance is the best reward already. What do you think, Ye Can?”
Ye Can blinked, utterly sincere. “You’re right—I’m grateful for the extra role, so I’ll work hard at it. But pay is pay; this is work, after all.”
Feng Jianming couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Exactly, exactly—it’s work, so we gotta talk pay properly!”
He even gave Ye Can advice. “Kid, this extra’s tough work. Aim higher than market rate.”
His intervention cleverly used Ye Can’s innocence to defuse the awkwardness.
Meng Zhiqiu winked at Ye Can too. “Right, Ye Can—demand more for this extra gig.”
Ye Can got the hint, realizing there’d be good hazard pay. She counted on her fingers, calculating seriously. “I checked market rates—extras get about 200 a day. I won’t ask for much: 250 a day, ten days, that’s 2500.”
She finished and pointed at Lin Zixi behind her. “When I’m done, just send the money to her.”
Hou Ming glanced at Lin Zixi behind Ye Can and grinned slyly. “Your manager?”
Ye Can mumbled vaguely, “Sort of.”
Hou Ming nodded knowingly. “Alright, we’ll have someone talk pay with her.”
Then he told Ye Can, “Now that’s settled, time to run your extra. Here’s the script—check it out. Rehearse a scene with each of them first.”
Ye Can acknowledged with an “oh,” scanned the script, memorized all her lines in one go, then looked at Hou Ming. “Got it. Let’s do a take.”
Her lines were few, but the actions intricate. Hou Ming clapped the script against his palm. “Perfect—let’s start. Rehearse one!”
