Yue Yiyue’s expression turned indescribable in an instant.
She sat there, softening her tone as best she could. “You’re already a university student.”
It wasn’t quite appropriate to say such childish things.
In an instant, Gu Ye’s gaze toward Yue Yiyue changed, tears welling up in her eyes. “But back when we were neighbors, you’d always do this when I got hurt.”
It wasn’t the old her, Yue Yiyue reminded herself, but she had indeed taken over this Yue Yiyue’s body.
She could not let Gu Ye notice anything wrong.
She leaned over and casually blew on the wounds twice, then picked up the iodophor nearby and applied it to a few deeper cuts.
After confirming that Gu Ye had nothing serious and her spirits were good, she sat back in her original spot and stared blankly at the potted plants on the balcony.
Yue Yiyue still felt a little uncomfortable around Gu Ye.
Her gaze was so intense.
If she didn’t speak up, Gu Ye would just keep staring.
But Gu Ye’s gaze held no malice; it was more like admiration, so Yue Yiyue did not say much.
After all, it had no real impact on her.
Let her look; it wouldn’t cost her a piece of flesh.
After sitting on the sofa for a moment, Yue Yiyue still couldn’t sit still. She took out a few bags of snacks from the cabinet and two bottles of cola: “Want some? Get whatever else you want from that snack box.”
“By the way, Gu Ye, do you live in the dormitory or outside?”
“I live outside. I rented a small room, but the water heater broke these past few days.” Gu Ye smiled as she explained, then realized her slip and covered her mouth. “Sorry, it’s nothing. I’ll just buy a new one later. I haven’t earned the money yet, but I believe if I work hard, it’ll be fine in a month.”
……
“Later, Nanqiu and I will discuss it. If she has no objections, you can stay here tonight.” Yue Yiyue was not too averse to Gu Ye’s little maneuvers, which were blatantly obvious.
That youthful face and the dependent little glances she kept shooting her.
Yue Yiyue saw through Gu Ye’s little schemes, but she knew the girl truly had no bad intentions. She just didn’t make friends easily—she’d reunited with her childhood friend, and then last night that incident happened.
All in all, she was just a bit dependent on this childhood friend of hers.
At that thought, Yue Yiyue felt a little guilty.
After all, she wasn’t her real friend, but helping out as much as she could should be no problem.
“Eat first.” Yue Yiyue handed over the items: “Do you know why they targeted Zhou Qingyi?”
“Or rather, what were you doing going over there so late?”
Of course, this Gu Ye knew the answer, but she couldn’t say it directly and could only vaguely recount what had happened.
“I went to the night market over there to shop. I wanted to buy something to give you, but those things were all too cheap and did not suit you at all, so I went home.”
“On the way back, a woman suddenly rushed out. She was carrying a Mango Strawberry Cake and said she was Zhou Qingyi. She would give me 100,000 if I saved her.”
Gu Ye paused for emphasis. “It wasn’t about the money. She just rushed at me, smearing cake all over, and then that lunatic chased me like crazy.”
Cake?
Mango Strawberry Cake?
Yue Yiyue silently committed these details to memory. “Got it, thanks. You had it rough, Gu Ye. I know you’re not the type for money.”
————
Yue Yiyue stood in front of the Cake Shop. This was the one Gu Ye had mentioned, the particularly popular one lately.
It was also the shop where Zhou Qingyi had bought her cake.
Though she held out no other hope, at least checking it out would rule out one possibility.
Red tiles, green walls—the colorful Cake Shop had display cases outside filled with cakes of various flavors.
Yue Yiyue scanned them: durian, matcha, chocolate, mango mille-feuille……
They had everything inside except the Mango-Flavored Strawberry Cake Gu Ye had described.
She pushed open the door and looked around inside but still found no cake of that strange flavor.
Perhaps it was just a coincidence.
Yue Yiyue glanced over another rack of cakes, confirmed there was nothing she wanted, and turned to leave.
“Are you looking for that cake too?” A girl noticed Yue Yiyue’s demeanor and looked at her curiously, pointing to the cute cakes.
Yue Yiyue stopped and pointed at herself: “Me?”
Seeing Yue Yiyue’s bewildered look, she smiled: “Aren’t you curious why such a remote Cake Shop has such good business?”
“A bit curious.” Yue Yiyue played along, pretending great interest as she pointed at the cakes. “If you’re willing to tell me, how about I treat you to one?”
The girl looked at Yue Yiyue in surprise and immediately started picking one out.
“The Pistachio Basque here is really good—sweet and salty, great flavor.” She pointed to the exquisite and cute cake in the corner: “Want one too?”
Yue Yiyue nodded and said to the waitress standing behind the counter: “Hello, two Pistachio Basques, to eat here.”
Moments later, they sat in a sunny spot.
It was street-side, where they could watch passersby through the glass, and tucked in a quiet corner with no other customers.
Perfect for talking.
“Hello, I’m Liu Mingdian, in the same class as Gu Nanqiu. I’ve seen you with her before.” She showed a friendly smile: “I knew right away that Gu Nanqiu’s friends are good people too.”
She tapped the table, her gaze on the little cake complicated. “Speaking of which, it seems you don’t know about this recent cake fame.”
“’If you have a wish, please buy a matcha-flavored Strawberry Cake, but if you get a Mango-Flavored Strawberry Cake, you will pay the price.’”
“Someone bought a matcha-flavored Strawberry Cake before and really had their wish granted. It’s famous on Tieba. You can check it out if you have time.” Liu Mingdian smiled at Yue Yiyue: “Also, there’s a time limit for buying the cakes, but it’s not fixed. No one knows when it refreshes.”
The girl’s enthusiasm made Yue Yiyue a bit uncomfortable at first, but it eased when she heard she was from Gu Nanqiu’s class.
She rubbed her palms and nodded: “Alright, I understand. Thanks.”
“Mingdian, are you here for that wish too?”
Liu Mingdian nodded: “Yes, or you could say no. It’s mainly because of Xie Ying.”
At the mention of the name, Liu Mingdian let out a heavy sigh: “Speaking of which, I should thank you first. I’m Xie Ying’s girlfriend. Yesterday something like that happened, and I was out of town and couldn’t rush back in time. If you all hadn’t stopped her there, I really don’t dare to imagine what would have happened next.”
She stood and bowed. “Once Xie Ying’s discharged, we’ll invite you all to dinner.”
“You and Gu Nanqiu are classmates, no need to be so polite. If it’s convenient, can you tell me how Xie Ying is connected to this?” The sudden movement embarrassed Yue Yiyue, who glanced around.
Confirming no one noticed this corner, she tried to steer the topic away.
She should have come out with Gu Ye……
“Before that, Xie Ying told me she wanted to come to this Cake Shop to buy a cake. If she got the matcha-flavored Strawberry Cake, she would wish for a smooth university life with diligent studies and successful graduation.”
“The night before, she even sent me a photo of that cake, saying the flavor was a bit strange.”
“The next day……”
Liu Mingdian trailed off, but Yue Yiyue understood and didn’t press.
“So how is Xie Ying now?”
Seeing the worry in Liu Mingdian’s eyes deepen, she shook her head.
“They couldn’t diagnose anything. Then a witch her family knows said it was an Evil Presence and that they were powerless to handle it.”
“So I thought I’d come try too, to see what’s really going on. If I really get the matcha-flavored cake and get a chance to wish, I hope Xie Ying will be safe and sound.”
With that, she forked another bite. “Speaking of which, this is the cake we ate after two months together.”
Liu Mingdian let out another heavy sigh.
Yue Yiyue forced the words out dryly. “It’ll be fine. Don’t worry too much.”
So this cake was indeed an important thing.
After exchanging contact info with Liu Mingdian, Yue Yiyue repeatedly warned her not to blindly try the cakes and promised it would get better.
Everything would be fine.
After parting with Liu Mingdian, Yue Yiyue checked the unapproved friend request on her phone.
It seemed Zhou Qingyi, the busy person, could not be reached for a while, so she would set it aside for now.
The sun was just right then, so Yue Yiyue headed straight home.
She needed to look up info on the Wishing Cake.
There was still an afternoon class—Gu Nanqiu’s.
All in all, there was quite a lot to do today.
————
“Yiyue, I’m here!” Gu Nanqiu pounced toward Yue Yiyue. She linked arms with her and curiously eyed the small box in her hand. Inside the transparent box was a green cake that looked tasty, though it was mixed with other flavors.
Gu Nanqiu’s brows furrowed slightly.
“I tried some first—it’s fine.” Yue Yiyue turned the box to show the missing bite on the other side. “Pistachio Basque. Someone recommended it. I thought it was good, so I wanted to share.”
“Oh, like that.” Gu Nanqiu’s eyes curved into smiles as she took the small box from Yue Yiyue: “Of course I like it if you gave it to me. But Yiyue, did you meet someone behind my back?!”
“I smell someone else’s perfume on you!” Gu Nanqiu put on a serious face as she leaned in to sniff at Yue Yiyue’s neck and shoulder, detecting that scent she disliked.
Her smooth hair brushed across Yue Yiyue’s neck, making her laugh out loud: “Nanqiu, you look like a little dog right now.”
She reached up and pinched Gu Nanqiu’s nose: “It was Liu Mingdian, Xie Ying’s girlfriend from your class. She chatted with me about Xie Ying.”
“By the way, Nanqiu, do you know about the Wishing Cake?”
“Wishing Cake?” Gu Nanqiu stepped back to save her nose and thought seriously: “No idea. Lately, I’ve only known that you gained two jin and started liking jasmine milk tea.”
“And the scented diffuser you glanced at a few days ago—I bought it for you. You can pick it up after class!”
“The Memory Pillow too!”
