Li Yuanxi and Wei Shu, finally home in the arms of their families, were surrounded by relatives at the hospital, waiting for a full medical check-up.
Meanwhile, the elder siblings arranged for a private jet. Their flight routes had been approved. They’d rest for the night and fly home tomorrow.
“Chuyi.” Wei Shu was being led by her father when she suddenly felt her usual comforting scent of agarwood was far away. Panic rose in her voice as she called for Li Yuanxi.
Wei Shu turned her head, searching for her wife. Her eyes were filled with anxiety. Her eldest brother, Wei Yi, came over to soothe her, but she pushed him away. Her third sister, a beautiful omega with a sweet voice, stepped in.
“Little Shu, don’t be scared. Third Sister is with you. Chuyi has gone for her check-up too. You needed to check on the baby first. That’s why she’s gone.” Wei Jing wrapped a comforting arm around Wei Shu’s shoulders.
Wei Shu’s heart eased a little, but she still felt uneasy. For so long, she had never been separated from Li Yuanxi in an unfamiliar place.
Even with her family by her side, she felt a knot of anxiety.
“That idiot. She didn’t even tell me before she left. Just wait until I get my hands on her.”
Wei Shu gritted her teeth, her face set in a determined pout, and followed her third sister. She took a few steps, then turned to look back down the empty corridor.
The look in her eyes was intense, a fearsome glint that made Wei Yi, Wei Zheng, and Wei Xin feel a pang of guilt. It was they who had driven Li Yuanxi away.
The three of them exchanged glances, then pretended they knew nothing. They’d make Li Yuanxi’s life a living hell if she dared to complain to Shu Shu.
Li Yuanxi, her gaze fixed on her wife, was led away. Halfway down the hall, she was stopped by her brother-in-law, who spoke with exaggerated politeness to Li Zheng. “Uncle Li, her examination is on the other side. Turn left.” He even pointed the way.
“I’m not in a hurry. I can wait. I want to go with Shu Shu first.” Li Yuanxi tried to sidestep her brother-in-law to catch up with her wife, who was almost out of sight.
But two hulking figures suddenly blocked her path. Li Zheng and Lu Wan understood immediately. They pulled their daughter away, heading in the opposite direction.
“Thank you, President Wei. We’ll see you later.” Li Zheng forced a smile. These were future in-laws. It was better to be sensible now to build a good relationship later, and not intrude on their family reunion. Besides, they also wanted some alone time with their daughter.
“Mom…” Li Yuanxi was dragged away, but she kept looking back, her face a picture of longing.
The fully equipped obstetricians were already waiting. They had been specially summoned to examine the two survivors.
Wei Shu was still wearing the clothes she had brought back from the island: a white shirt and a large, washed-out black T-shirt. The clean clothes her assistant had brought were still waiting for her, after the examination.
Old Master Wei and the others waited outside the examination room. Wei Jing stayed inside with her sister, helping her onto the bed. Seeing the strange place, Wei Shu’s heartbeat quickened, and her breathing became rapid.
“Don’t worry. It’ll be over soon. You’ll see your baby soon.” The doctor used a gentle, soothing voice as she applied the cool coupling gel to Wei Shu’s fair belly.
The gel spread evenly over her skin. The doctor placed the probe on Wei Shu’s belly. The fifth month of pregnancy was the perfect time for a 4D ultrasound.
“There. That’s your baby.” A pretty female doctor pointed to the screen. Wei Shu looked at the image of her baby.
“She’s so small.” Wei Shu watched the little one stretch its arms and legs inside her. “She’s a healthy, lively little one.” The doctor watched as the baby turned over and moved on its own without any prompting.
Wei Shu’s mind quickly relaxed as she watched the screen. Occasionally, the baby would raise a hand, and she could see a tiny handprint pressing against her belly from the inside.
Seeing that little hand for the first time, Wei Jing stopped breathing. It was a little alarming, to be honest!
But Wei Shu and Li Yuanxi were used to interacting with their little one. Maybe it was just a parent’s bias, but Wei Shu thought, “She’s so good.”
“Chuyi, look, that’s the baby’s hand.” Lost in the ultrasound, Wei Shu momentarily forgot that Li Yuanxi hadn’t come in with her. She pointed at the screen for her to see.
She waited a moment, but no one answered. She turned her head and found only her third sister looking intently at the screen. A look of disappointment crossed her face as she sank back onto the bed.
Two hours later, after a full-body check and a change of clothes, Li Yuanxi rushed to Wei Shu’s room. The security guards and assistant at the door stopped her.
“I’m sorry, Miss Li, but Miss is resting.” The assistant conveyed the Old Master’s wishes. Li Yuanxi frowned, looked at the guards surrounding her, nodded silently, and turned away.
“Dad, I’ve changed my clothes now. You can let Chuyi come in.” Wei Shu was drinking chicken soup, wearing a loose maternity dress. A faint purple mark was visible on her collarbone.
Every time the Old Master saw that mark, he would grunt. He knew exactly what caused it.
Muttering in displeasure, he said, “What’s the hurry? I haven’t had my fill of looking at you yet.”
Wei Shu, seeing her dad’s puffed-up demeanor, massaged her forehead in exasperation. She held her belly and stayed with him, trying to soothe his jealousy.
After an hour of waiting without Li Yuanxi coming, Wei Shu knew her wife had been stopped. The only person with the power to do that was her father.
“Dad, do you know what happened when the plane crashed? A huge crack split the cabin. The plane was tilting. I was thrown out of my seat; my seatbelt didn’t hold me.”
The old man’s face went pale. He clenched his hands, his lips trembling and eyes turning red. “It’s my fault. I didn’t protect you.”
Wei Shu shook her head, leaning against his shoulder. “It wasn’t your fault. Accidents happen. Who can predict them?”
“At that dangerous moment, Li Yuanxi didn’t hesitate to grab me. If she hadn’t, I would have been thrown out of that plane, just like the others, lost in that crash.”
She didn’t dwell on how good Li Yuanxi had been to her. She just calmly described the danger of the situation. One wrong move, and she would have died a grisly death.
Moreover, Li Yuanxi saved her more than once. When the plane landed in the sea, Li Yuanxi had pulled her, unconscious, from the water and dragged her all the way to the island.
The Old Master listened in heavy silence as Wei Shu told him about her and Li Yuanxi. But before long, she started yawning. Pregnant women get sleepy easily.
Seeing she was tired, his heart ached, and he didn’t press further. He just stroked her head. “You have to understand. I raised a daughter. She disappeared. Then, by some miracle, she came back alive, only for me to find out she’s having a baby. It’s a father’s heart.”
Wei Shu noticed the new wrinkles on her father’s face, the self-blame and regret in his eyes. She paused, wanting to say more, but he stopped her.
“Get some rest. That child… she still needs to pass my test.” The Old Master winked at her, gave her head a loving pat, and left.
When Wei Shu woke up, it was already dark. She didn’t call for anyone, just switched on a small nightlight. That’s when she heard a noise at the window.
Frowning, she thought it was a media drone and was about to call for someone. Then, Li Yuanxi’s head appeared in the window. It was hard to see through the glass, and she bobbed around for a moment before she was noticed.
The moment she saw her at the window, a wave of dizziness hit Wei Shu. She threw off her blanket and rushed over, carefully opening the window.
“Hi!” Li Yuanxi’s eyes lit up when she saw her wife. She waved excitedly. Wei Shu was so startled she reached out with both hands to grab her, terrified she might fall.
“Hey, I won’t fall.” Li Yuanxi pointed to the ladder she was standing on. She had specially borrowed an aerial ladder truck from the hospital, the kind used for rescuing people threatening to jump from buildings.
“Have you lost your mind?” Wei Shu dragged her back into the room, hissing in anger. She felt like hitting her.
“I just… I hadn’t seen you in so long.” Li Yuanxi shrank her neck, pouting. She waved at the driver of the ladder truck, who immediately drove away.
Wei Shu took a deep breath, pointing at Li Yuanxi with one hand and fanning herself with the other. “You’re going to be the death of me.”
Li Yuanxi edged closer, offering a placating smile. “I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”
She tried to hug her, but Wei Shu pushed her away, glaring. “Don’t hug me. I’m angry!”
“Oh.” Li Yuanxi withdrew her hands and started pacing the room, looking at everything. Wei Shu looked at her, then turned to sit on the bed, her face cold, and beckoned her over.
“Don’t ever do anything that dangerous again. You’re not just on your own anymore.” She grabbed Li Yuanxi’s ear and scolded her.
“Okay.” Li Yuanxi hugged Wei Shu, nuzzling against her. Meanwhile, acting as lookouts for their precious daughter, Li Zheng and Lu Wan were in another room with the Old Master, discussing the upcoming questions from the airline.
As the only two survivors, they were the center of attention. Countless media outlets were waiting outside. The airline had come several times but had been turned away by the hospital and the families.
But they couldn’t avoid them forever. Today, they could use the excuse of needing rest after examinations. Tomorrow, the airline representatives would definitely question them, and then they’d be going home.
