Witch’s Night: Chapter 33 Illusion and Shadow
The Oak Council Chamber.
All the Elders were watching the incoming information, each with a similar grave expression.
It wasn’t until the news of Hamid’s retreat arrived that they all breathed a sigh of relief.
“It seems this crisis has been resolved…”
An Elder in the corner whispered.
“Villas, no, not yet,” Norian, in the main seat, steepled his fingers, his scrutinizing gaze sweeping over all the Elders present. “The real crisis still lurks among us.”
“Magistrate Norian, baseless suspicion is often the cause of internal strife. I hope you will be careful with your words.”
Madam Susan Moira’s expression turned unpleasant when she saw that Norian’s gaze seemed to linger on her a bit longer.
“Madam, a traitor in the upper echelons is often more deadly than a little suspicion, such as this contamination of the Ember Formation.” Norian said slowly and methodically. “If it hadn’t been discovered early, the entire Lannister would have become a nest of demons.
“Once the contaminated Ember Formation is connected to all ability users, there’s no need to resolve these Calamities anymore. You Elders can just pack up and find another way out.”
Madam Susan Moira hesitated to speak, but ultimately remained silent.
Access to the core of the Ember Tower Formation, this authority was only held by the Council of Elders.
Nobles used to have it too, but after the Constantine incident, nobles became figureheads in the true sense of the word. Even if they wanted to be promoted to the management level, they had to undergo the same selection process as commoners, at most having a few privileges.
This time, they were lucky to have discovered it. What about next time?
If the next traitor acted again, unnoticed, what… would happen?
The consequences would be unimaginable.
That being said, it always felt bad to be suspected, especially for these Elders who were accustomed to their high positions of power.
The lockdown of the Oak Council Chamber was no different from imprisonment to them.
“If that’s the case, Magistrate Norian,” at this time, Elder Kenya, who often clashed with Norian, stood up again, “I’d like to hear how you plan to find the traitor among us.”
Kenya stared directly at Norian, his gaze sharp. “Could it be that we vote among ourselves? If that’s the case… I highly suspect you, Magistrate Norian.”
“No, Elder Kenya,” Norian narrowed his eyes slightly. “Since there’s a traitor among us, it means that every one of us has lost credibility. No one’s judgment can be trusted. Therefore…”
“Therefore, I will be the judge.”
Just then, the door of the Oak Council Chamber was pushed open, and a tall figure walked in. Her beautiful silhouette exuded an air of decisiveness, and she walked directly to Norian’s side upon entering.
“Who are you! This is the Council Chamber, no admittance to unauthorized personnel!”
Kenya frowned at this unfamiliar woman and shouted sternly.
“I am not unauthorized personnel, and I have many things waiting for me, so I’m also pressed for time.” The tall figure waved her hand dismissively and looked at the main seat of the council. “Norian, open your mind, I need to borrow it for a moment.”
“Yes, Saint Illusion.”
Norian bowed respectfully and opened his mind to the tall figure.
“Il-, Illusion?”
Kenya’s expression froze. He looked closely, and this woman was indeed identical to the woman he saw during the communication with Yan City last time.
Since Saint Illusion’s appearance was ever-changing, basically no one had seen her true form, so it was normal not to recognize her.
Last time, it was because the Holy Knight-Captain was there to remind him. This time, Kenya was in a state of high tension and didn’t look closely.
The other Elders weren’t much better, and a look of panic even appeared on Susan Moira’s face.
“Not Illusion, I am Elise.”
Elise frowned in displeasure. After receiving the news of the crisis in Lannister, she immediately left the Lifeline and had the Holy Knight-Captain escort her physical body across the Endless Wasteland.
Upon entering Lannister, the message Norian left before sealing off the Oak Council Chamber reached her, and Elise immediately rushed to the Oak Council Chamber to address this issue.
As for why she needed to borrow Norian’s consciousness… it was because Elise’s strength was only at “Ruin” level, and it was difficult for her to support large-scale techniques.
Even though Illusion, her controller, was among the top three “Destruction” level ability users, she still couldn’t escape the limitations of a puppet.
Elise acted quickly and immediately connected to Norian’s consciousness. Norian’s eyes instantly turned completely gray-white.
Before any of the Elders present could react, they felt a sense of terror and panic, as if being peered into from the depths of their hearts.
This feeling of being completely exposed was very uncomfortable. The Elders were as if frozen in their chairs, subjected to Elise’s thorough examination, inside and out.
Fortunately, Elise’s probing only lasted a short time before the color returned to Norian’s gray-white eyes.
Without anyone noticing, they had been trapped in a brief illusion.
The illusion revealed their inner thoughts to Elise, so she easily identified the most unusual presence among them.
“Found it, Norian. You deal with it yourself, I have to go find Miss Luo Yan.”
Elise nodded to Norian and then glanced at Madam Susan Moira. The other party’s expression visibly paled; her source of power had been completely severed when she was being probed.
Finally, without saying anything more, Elise immediately left the Oak Council Chamber.
As she had just said, she had many things to do.
In Illusion’s opinion, Miss Luo Yan’s matter was far more important than finding the traitor among the Lannister Elders.
Norian had said that the Saints’ perspective was never limited to the gains and losses of a single city. What they looked at was always the future of humanity.
After Elise left, silence hung in the Oak Council Chamber for a long time.
“Madam Susan Moira… no, Susan,” Norian said in a low voice, “I don’t want to ask why you did this. I know you have your reasons, but unfortunately, Lannister can’t tolerate it.”
Madam Susan Moira sneered coldly, her pale face showing no remorse,
“I was too careless. My Lord’s token actually left a flaw for you to discover.”
“Actually, you weren’t careless, Susan,” Norian’s expression suddenly turned strange. “Under normal circumstances, your plan would have succeeded. How could we have discovered the contamination of the Ember Formation space?
“But… the demonic offering you sent in seemed to have triggered a resonance.”
Norian vaguely guessed that this should be related to Luo Yan, but he naturally didn’t say it out loud.
Of course, even if he didn’t say it, as a core member of the Church of the End Gods, Madam Susan Moira naturally knew about Luo Yan’s existence; there was no need for speculation.
“We will focus on dealing with this matter, Susan. It seems you will have to suffer for a while.”
Norian took a deep look at the old woman and then left the Oak Council Chamber.
The other Elders all retreated a few steps away from Susan. Kenya even retreated far away, after all, he had joined Susan in heckling Norian several times during this meeting.
Because Kenya felt that Norian was just looking for an excuse to purge dissidents, which was why he fabricated such a reason.
Now that it had been confirmed by the Saint, Kenya was suffering in silence, extremely anxious, wanting to quickly explain to Norian that he wasn’t on Susan’s side.
So when Norian left, Kenya was the first to chase after him, the other Elders also followed closely, leaving Susan alone in the Council Chamber.
Then several knights of the Lannister Knights entered, saluted Susan, and said, “Madam Susan, this way please.”
“Short-sighted, foolish mortals, only focusing on your current survival, but unable to see the real crisis approaching in the distance.” Susan snorted coldly, her stern gaze fixed on these knights. “When you witness the truth, you will know how pathetic your insignificance and mistakes are.”
“Madam Susan, our apologies, this is Magistrate Norian’s order.”
A knight stepped forward, took out a roll of tape, and wordlessly sealed Susan’s mouth.
Cultists liked to use words to deceive people’s hearts. It wouldn’t be good if the only guard was persuaded to join the cult, so directly sealing her mouth was the simplest and most straightforward solution.
“Mmm…”
Susan’s face was filled with rage, but it was useless. She was no longer a high-ranking Elder, but a cultist.
Soon, several knights escorted her to Lannister’s most secure dungeon for detainment.
……
Under the dazzling starry sky, a dark shadow sat on the rooftop of a tall building, her hands slightly behind her, looking up at the vast galaxy at a comfortable angle.
“It seems you’re quite free.”
A cold voice sounded, and Elise appeared behind the shadow.
“I just defeated the biggest boss here, the Bishop of the cult, can’t I even rest for a while?”
Shadow raised an eyebrow, leaned back to look at the newcomer, and the corners of her mouth curved up slightly.
“A shadow avatar doesn’t feel fatigue, and a battle of that level doesn’t consume much energy.” Elise said indifferently. “Moreover, that Bishop already intended to retreat; leaving Lannister was only a matter of time.”
“Aren’t you Elise? Why do you have the same personality as Illusion?” Shadow teased. “Cold and indifferent, quite boring.”
“Oh right, I almost forgot.”
Elise, with her indifferent expression, patted her head. Her expression quickly became lively, and finally, a faint smile appeared on her lips.
“Want to see Miss Luo Yan?” Elise walked a few steps and sat next to Shadow, her voice soft and charming. “Although she’s easy to get along with, I still don’t recommend you contact her.”
“Eww—you better change back.”
Shadow shuddered, feeling very uncomfortable.
“Change back to what? I don’t understand.”
Elise blinked, the playful glint in her eyes making Shadow’s goosebumps rise again.
“Forget it, just leave it.” Shadow sighed. She shouldn’t have mentioned it. “I do want to see her, but since you’ve said so… I can only give up.”
“Good girl, so obedient~”
Elise chuckled softly.
“…….”
Shadow covered her forehead, feeling like her shadow avatar’s brain was about to explode.
“You sense it too, right?”
Elise looked up at the starry sky with Shadow and whispered.
“Yes,” Shadow’s expression became a little more serious. “‘Whispers of the Fallen,’ a voice from the Malice of All Worlds.”
“It should only reappear in the world within the scope of mortal comprehension, that is, as a song.” Elise continued. “But now, the true ‘Whispers of the Fallen’ has appeared in Lannister.”
No one could hear it, including the Saints, only conceptual entities… could clearly hear this song.
Shadow and Elise only deduced the appearance of the “Whispers of the Fallen” based on the subtle changes in the surrounding environment.
“Aren’t you going to stop her? This mysterious singer.”
Shadow looked at Elise. They were currently on the roof of the apartment building where Luo Yan lived, just a few floors down from her.
“Let her sing if she wants to. With you and me here, what’s there to be afraid of?” Elise said indifferently. “If she could sing everyone to death, there’s nothing we can do about it, let’s just go with the flow.”
“That’s true.”
Shadow nodded and lay down directly.
Elise also lay down, leaning against Shadow.
The two just looked at the starry sky, silent for a long time.
They had both seen the truth beyond the starry sky, but they still chose to become what Hamid called Errants, confronting the Gods, who had become the Malice of All Worlds, to prevent the destruction of human civilization, or rather—
The corrupted world will.
……
“So warm…”
She had never felt such warmth before, as if a gentle wind was gently lifting her into the air, softly caressing her entire body, leaving only a warm sensation.
“Mom…”
Cecilia slowly opened her eyes and saw a silver-white figure swaying before her.
The vague image in her memory seemed to become clear at this moment.
Mom, should look like this…
“I am not your mother, Cecilia.”
Luo Yan touched the feverish little girl and sighed.
Look at what had become of this child, what kind of eyes did she have to mistake her for her mother?
“Um, Mom…”
Cecilia mumbled again and closed her eyes drowsily.
Her current condition had been mostly dealt with by Luo Yan and was basically out of danger.
But there was a crucial problem: Cecilia couldn’t be too far away from Luo Yan, otherwise her overflowing demonic power couldn’t be balanced by Luo Yan, and serious consequences would occur.
Of course, there were no other side effects besides this.
“Is this… ‘Terror’?”
Luo Yan felt a strange power surging in her mind. With a slight thought, a weightless longsword appeared in her hand out of thin air.
“Materializing imagination, this should be how Cecilia’s power manifests.”
