Chapter 57: A Change of Pace
With Feng Mengmeng gone, Fu Qi comforted his wife. “Don’t worry, honey, I’ve given plenty of these kinds of speeches at work.”
“I’m going to rest for a bit.”
Xi Meng’s voice was slightly hoarse as she walked towards the bedroom.
Fu Qi was confused. Tang Ze had already agreed, so why was she still so agitated?
Lying in bed, Xi Meng tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
The next afternoon, bored, Tang Ze decided to visit Feng Mengmeng. The novelty hadn’t worn off yet. The kittens at home, however, were complaining, but as soon as Tang Ze left, they were overjoyed. Another easy day, let another woman bear the burden.
He knocked on her door, and a strange girl opened it. It was the girl in the white skirt.
“Uh, is Mengmeng here?”
Tang Ze asked, wondering if he had come to the wrong apartment.
“Yes, she is. I’m her friend, Fang Wei.”
“Hello, I’m Tang Ze.”
They shook hands. Feng Mengmeng came out of the bedroom, blushing slightly when she saw him. She knew why he was here, but her friend was visiting.
“Brother Tang, come in and sit.”
Fang Wei noticed Feng Mengmeng’s strange behavior. Why is she blushing?
Tang Ze walked in. Feng Mengmeng poured him half a glass of water. In these times, offering water was a gesture of utmost sincerity.
She was too shy to sit next to him, so she sat at the other end of the sofa. Fang Wei sat on a single armchair, hugging a pillow. The atmosphere was a bit awkward.
Tang Ze was frustrated. This Fang Wei is so clueless. I’m here, shouldn’t you find an excuse to leave? Are you waiting to watch the show?
“Are you two chatting?”
Tang Ze wasn’t good at small talk with women. What was there to talk about?
Feng Mengmeng nodded. “Weiwei is homesick.”
“You don’t live here?”
Tang Ze asked, confused.
Fang Wei sighed. “I work in Hua’an City. My father was worried about the safety of some complexes, so he bought me an apartment here.”
“So you’re a rich kid.”
Tang Ze shrugged. But Fang Wei’s posture was a bit strange. Didn’t she realize he could see her white lacy panties? Or was she doing it on purpose?
“You’re joking, Brother Tang. My father is just a little well-off.”
Fang Wei said with a modest smile. Tang Ze didn’t press further. It wasn’t any of his business.
Feng Mengmeng looked at the drizzling rain outside and sighed. “I wonder when this will end. I wish it would rain harder, at least those people from Mr. Huo wouldn’t dare to come.”
“Yeah, and if the wind picked up, no one would dare to go out. This light rain is a real killer.”
Fang Wei also looked sad, constantly thinking about how to escape and go home to safety.
“It’s gotten much colder these past few days. I don’t have any warm clothes. If the power goes out, I’m afraid I’ll freeze to death.”
At this thought, Feng Mengmeng shivered. She was terrified of a power outage, which would be a fatal blow.
No one knew when the power would go out, but it was only a matter of time.
Perhaps in the next moment, even the phone signal would disappear.
“I’m going to the bathroom. I’ve been feeling under the weather lately.”
Fang Wei said with a wry smile. Eating junk food every day wasn’t good for her.
As soon as she left and closed the bathroom door, Tang Ze and Feng Mengmeng locked eyes. Feng Mengmeng immediately looked down, blushing, and Tang Ze pulled her into his arms.
A while later, the bathroom door opened, and Feng Mengmeng quickly sat back at the end of the sofa, Tang Ze acting as if nothing had happened.
“I wonder what’s happening in other cities, if there are any safe places.”
Fang Wei, oblivious to what had just happened, sighed.
“There probably are, but we can’t go anywhere now.”
Tang Ze smiled, amused by Feng Mengmeng’s uncomfortable expression.
Fang Wei asked tentatively, “Brother Tang, you’re so capable. You could probably escape to a safe city.”
Tang Ze just smiled without answering. His car wasn’t so easy to get into.
Seeing his silence, Fang Wei knew that without offering something in return, he wouldn’t protect her. And after last night’s retaliation, who knew when Mr. Huo’s men would come again.
She thought about the men who had fled. They talked big, but when the killing started, they ran faster than anyone.
“I’m going to the bathroom.”
Feng Mengmeng said, her face slightly red.
Tang Ze shook his head. Why are you all going to the bathroom in turns?
Suddenly, Fang Wei moved from the armchair and sat beside him, her breath warm against his ear.
“What are you doing?”
Tang Ze was taken aback. Were women this forward now?
She just grabbed his arm?
He had never had such treatment when he was a delivery guy. He had once fantasized about a female resident dragging him into her apartment.
“Brother Tang, can you protect me?”
Fang Wei looked up at him, her eyes pleading.
Tang Ze’s lips twitched. So this is a trade. She gets it.
This makes things easier.
The bathroom door opened, and Fang Wei quickly moved back to her seat. “Brother Tang, you were amazing last night.”
“Don’t say that, I was just trying to survive.”
“I wonder when Mr. Huo’s men will come again.”
“CEO Xi must have her own plans.”
Feng Mengmeng, knowing the inside story, said reassuringly.
They chatted until it was past six o’clock. Tang Ze was hungry and ready to go back for a big meal.
“Brother Tang, there’s still a piece of pork in the fridge. Why don’t you stay for dinner?”
Feng Mengmeng, trying to please him, was even willing to share the rare delicacy.
