Chapter 12: I Only Care About You.
Zhuo Xin’s wedding was held at a five-star hotel in the southern part of the city. Both families were wealthy with extensive social circles, so the wedding was naturally a grand affair, with over a hundred tables for the banquet.
The four of them, Huai Xing included, were not bridesmaids, so they didn’t have to go the night before to participate in the pre-wedding activities.
But they all lived some distance from the hotel, and they also needed to do their makeup and get ready, so they all woke up early. During their free time, they reported their progress in their group chat.
However, for Huai Xing, makeup was a bit tricky. She wasn’t very skilled at it, as she usually went bare-faced. Even when she participated in school activities, it was usually her friends who did her makeup.
Therefore, the only makeup techniques she had mastered were the simplest steps, like applying foundation.
After struggling in front of the mirror for two minutes, she finally took her makeup bag and knocked on the master bedroom door.
When she heard a response from inside, she pushed the door open.
Chu Wantang’s work schedule had been very hectic lately. The closer it got to the fashion show, the greater her pressure became. She had just woken up not long ago and was leaning against the headboard, replying to various messages, her posture lazy.
Seeing Huai Xing standing at the door with her makeup bag, her intention was clear.
“Sit down first. I’m going to wash my face.”
Chu Wantang threw back the covers and got up. This wasn’t the first time Huai Xing had come to her for help with makeup; she knew what it meant.
The temperature had warmed up considerably, and she had changed the style of her pajamas. Now, she was only wearing a black slip that reached her thighs, revealing a large expanse of jade-white skin.
Huai Xing put on a very composed look and replied with a smile, “Okay, thank you, Jiejie.”
When Chu Wantang was out of the bedroom, she quickly let out a breath.
Even though she could feel Chu Wantang’s figure when they hugged, a sight like this still had a strong impact on her.
It was all because of her guilty conscience.
After calming down for a few seconds, she sat down in the chair in front of the vanity mirror.
She opened the group chat, typed “My sister is doing my makeup for me today,” and sent it, all in one smooth motion.
Her three friends: [You didn’t have to say that. Why isn’t Sister Wantang my sister, ahhh.]
Huai Xing got the answer she wanted and raised an eyebrow.
Her affection for Chu Wantang had always been traceable, mainly reflected in her possessiveness over her.
When did she first notice it? It seemed to be during her freshman year military training that she became aware of it.
Military training was tough. Chu Wantang had specially made time to visit her, bringing her drinks, fruits, sunscreen, and cooling patches—everything she could possibly need, very considerate.
It was also then that her platoon mates found out she had a sister like Chu Wantang. Even though they weren’t familiar with her, they would privately ask for Chu Wantang’s contact information. She had refused them all at the time.
Later, when she became closer to a few friends, they took the opportunity to ask again, only to be rejected by her once more.
On the surface, she felt that Chu Wantang was busy with work at the time, and these people’s appearance would disturb her sister.
In reality, she didn’t want her friends to get close to Chu Wantang. Chu Wantang was too good of a person. She didn’t want Chu Wantang to politely share even a little bit of her kindness with her friends. Just the thought of it was unbearable.
Fortunately, this was still in practice. She kept Chu Wantang and her friends at a distance; a superficial relationship was enough.
She didn’t have to wait long before Chu Wantang returned with a face mask on.
Her face was small, so there was a lot of excess mask. She wore a headband, her hair casually tied up in a bun. Because she had just washed her face, there were still water droplets on her neck and collarbone, magnifying that small patch of skin.
The makeup process was simple. Huai Xing had good skin, so they even skipped the concealer step.
Chu Wantang didn’t stand the whole time. She pulled over another chair and sat down, almost at eye level with Huai Xing.
As she applied foundation for Huai Xing, she said, “Message me half an hour before it’s over, remember?”
“I remember.”
“You can also message me if anything else comes up.” Chu Wantang blinked. The face mask on her face hindered her expressions, but it didn’t affect the smile in her words. She said without warning, “For example, you can also say things like you miss me.”
Huai Xing’s hands were on her lap. On the surface, she was calm, but inside, she was horrified.
She had said such things to Chu Wantang under the guise of being her sister, but now that Chu Wantang was bringing it up, it was hard for her not to suspect that this was a test.
The scene at the cemetery flashed through her mind. She closed her eyes, unsure of how to answer for a moment.
“What?” Chu Wantang’s motion of patting her cheek with the powder puff paused. “You won’t miss me?”
Huai Xing tugged at her dress and offered a smile. “Of course I will, Jiejie.” Her eyelashes fluttered twice as she looked at Chu Wantang’s eyes nonchalantly. “What about you, Jiejie? Will you miss me too?”
Chu Wantang’s lashes drooped, and her gaze unconsciously fell on her moist lips. The casual reply was revealed in the next second.
“Mm, I will.”
The short conversation stirred up a storm in Huai Xing’s heart. She closed her eyes again, hiding all her thoughts.
Chu Wantang, do you know that the nature of our missing each other is different?
She asked softly in her heart.
But Chu Wantang’s missing her as a family member was enough to satisfy her.
…
It was ten-thirty when they arrived at the hotel. Huai Xing met up with her three friends, carrying her violin case, and then went to greet Zhuo Xin.
Zhuo Xin was getting her makeup touched up backstage at the hotel. As the bride, she had woken up very early and had already gone through two rounds of photoshoots. At this moment, she was sitting in her chair, drowsy. It was a good thing the room was large, otherwise, the bridesmaids, friends, makeup artists, and photographers would have had no place to stand.
Seeing Huai Xing and the others, Zhuo Xin’s sleepiness dissipated a little. She said to them, “You’re here! Are you hungry? Have some snacks.”
Tu Zhaoyu shook her head. “I was hungry, but now that I see the beautiful bride, I’m full.”
Huai Xing played along. “A feast for the eyes.”
“Aiya! You guys are too much!”
A photographer at the side captured this harmonious scene.
Huai Xing took a step forward. “Xinxin, my sister said she also has a gift for you, but she’s busy with work right now and will come later.”
“It’s been so long since I’ve seen Sister Wantang. I miss her so much, wuwuwu. It’s already great that she can come despite her busy schedule, and she even remembered to get me a gift, wuwuwu.”
After the greetings, Huai Xing and the others went to the banquet hall first.
The banquet hall was huge, filled with tables.
Han Ying looked around and “tsked.” “I feel like it would cost twenty yuan to take a taxi from the last table to the stage.”
Lu Ling: “I think it’s more than that.”
The guests gradually took their seats. On the far right of the stage was a dedicated performance area with a piano, surrounded by fresh flowers.
A rich person’s wedding was not simple; this place was like a dream palace.
Zhuo Xin, mindful that the few of them had just started working and didn’t have much money, insisted that they not give red envelopes. So, the few of them discussed it and decided to perform as their “red envelope,” which also saved Zhuo Xin the expense of hiring a band, even though the Zhuo family was not short on that kind of money.
Even though Huai Xing was not short on that kind of money either.
Now, standing on the stage, the lights were on them, and two photographers were in position.
Huai Xing took a light breath and set up her violin. She tilted her head slightly and closed her eyes.
The melody began, the beautiful tune weaving outwards, soaring into the air.
In the end, due to the limited distance, it didn’t reach Chu Wantang’s ears.
She was on a high floor of a nearby hotel, having specially chosen a good window seat. She looked in the direction of the hotel where Huai Xing was, but everything was blocked, and her line of sight wasn’t that good.
But she could see Wan Yi sitting opposite her.
Su Cheng was supposed to come too, but she had to go to a neighboring city on a last-minute business trip for a custom clothing order. She had been cursing and complaining about the client all the way. So, the gathering of three had become a gathering of two.
At this moment, Wan Yi was resting her chin on her hand. The warm sun was making her a little sleepy, but she still promised repeatedly, “I didn’t tell Chengcheng about you and Sister Xingxing. You can tell her yourself later. It’s not appropriate for me to say it. Otherwise, what kind of person would I be?”
Chu Wantang picked up her coffee cup and commented, “You’re very self-aware.”
“But I have to be there. I’m really looking forward to Chengcheng’s expression then. It’ll definitely be priceless.”
“Mm.”
Wan Yi popped a mouthful of salad into her mouth. She was used to eating it, so it didn’t taste particularly good or bad.
“But I still have a question I’m very curious about,” she said, swallowing with some difficulty.
Chu Wantang looked at the lively scene in the distance and asked nonchalantly, “What question?”
“Are younger girls really that good?”
“…” Chu Wantang shot her a look. Thinking of the sensation of hugging Huai Xing in the cubicle that day, she answered without a change in expression, “Not bad.”
“I saw Xingxing’s posture, muscles, and figure that day. Not bad, Chu Wantang. You’ve hit the jackpot.”
“…”
“Of course, you’re not bad either. It’s just that an old house is on fire. I’m breaking a sweat for the little sister,” Wan Yi said, waving her hand. Seeing her usually aloof friend flustered, she laughed unrestrainedly. “You two are both in good shape. You can still go to work and work overtime every day, and then ‘work overtime’ at home. Mm, not bad.”
Chu Wantang’s brow twitched, but she still didn’t explain anything.
In public, Wan Yi maintained a fairy-like persona that perfectly matched her face, but in a situation like this, Chu Wantang, who had been her friend for years, couldn’t help but feel a sense of dissonance.
It was simply unbearable to listen to.
But… an old house on fire? She traced the rim of the coffee cup, looked at the rich coffee inside, and pressed her lips together.
The sound of running water from the bathroom seemed to echo in her ears.
…
Amidst Zhuo Xin’s happy smile, Huai Xing and the others finished their last piece, got off the stage, and sat down at a table closer to the front.
The wedding banquet was very expensive, and the dishes looked exquisite and delicious.
This table was full of Zhuo Xin’s friends, and everyone was laughing and talking. But halfway through the meal, Huai Xing’s phone, which was in her bag, started to vibrate.
She took out her phone and glanced at the caller ID. Considering the noise in the hall, she answered and first said to the person on the other end, “Jiejie, wait a second.” Then she left her seat, went out through a side door, and found a quiet garden nearby.
“Okay,” she said, catching her breath and sitting down on a bench.
Chu Wantang chuckled softly. “I’m not afraid of the noise.”
“But I’m afraid of disturbing you, Jiejie.” Huai Xing turned her head and sniffed the flowers beside her. “And I’m afraid I won’t be able to hear you clearly.”
“I miss you, Xiao Xing.”
Chu Wantang didn’t avoid Wan Yi. She said this very frankly, earning a silent scream and wide, disbelieving eyes from her friend.
After a pause, she asked in a gentle tone, “What about you? Do you miss me?”
Huai Xing felt as if her breath was caught in her throat. Suddenly, she couldn’t smell the flowers. All her senses disappeared, leaving only Chu Wantang’s words and question echoing in her mind.
Chu Wantang seemed a little different today. In the past, they would never have emphasized “missing” each other like this.
Huai Xing didn’t have time to think. Her answer came out first: “I do, Jiejie.”
Only then did she release her breath and continue, feigning composure, “Zhuo Xin and the others also said they miss you. We’ll probably be done in about an hour.”
“I don’t care what they think, Huai Xing.”
Chu Wantang stirred the coffee in front of her and slowly added, “I only care about you.”
