Chapter 25: Blood Transfusion p2
The grandfather clock struck three in the morning. Lina, timing it perfectly, had the person doing her bidding knock on the door five minutes later.
“Come in.”
The maid’s breathing was slightly rapid. She stood at the door with a sense of propriety.
“Miss, the two of them have been locked up. The journey was done discreetly, and the people who did it were all masked. All those involved in the night patrol, I’ve drugged them all. The drug is strong, I guarantee they’ll sleep until dawn. As for the others, the manor has a rule: servants not on night patrol cannot leave their rooms at night. The place where we live can’t see the butler’s room.”
She gave a clear and concise report on the matters Lina had instructed, her logic clear, without any dragging.
“Tomorrow morning, when the labor bureau opens, you go and report that two servants have run away from the manor and also stole some porcelain. In the afternoon, you arrange for people to send them to the labor bureau. You can even collect a bounty.”
Servants who ran away on their own would never be able to leave the labor bureau for the rest of their lives.
The porcelain that had been used to exchange for money also had a reason for its disappearance.
“Yes.” The maid agreed readily. “I will definitely handle the matters you’ve instructed.”
She was about to leave when Lina called out to her.
“Wait. I haven’t asked your name yet.”
“Miss, my name is Dilys.” The maid looked at her and added, “I’m an orphan. I have no family.”
Lina said again, “I promised you that as long as you got rid of the head maid, her position would be yours. But I have someone else in mind now.”
Disappointment flickered in Dilys’s eyes, but there was no trace of resentment. “…Alright.”
Lina observed her expression with a smile. After a moment, she said, “How about you be the butler?”
The rise and fall happened in this moment. Dilys was in disbelief. Her lips moved several times before she repeated, “Butler? Me?”
In this land, it was still very rare for a woman to be a butler. This was a position higher than the head maid. When the master was away, she would have absolute power.
Lina leaned on the sand table, leaning forward slightly, and asked with a smile, “Unwilling?”
The candle flame flickered violently. Dilys licked her dry, cracked lips, and two words squeezed out from her tight throat. “I’m willing.”
She seemed to feel that this was not enough to show her loyalty. She abruptly knelt on the floor and crawled forward two steps on her knees. “Thank you, Miss, for the promotion!”
Dilys’s submission this time had less fear and more sincerity than in the warehouse.
Lina looked down at her, her eyes complex.
There was the triumph of having accurately judged a person’s heart, and also a naked disappointment in human nature.
There was the confidence of gradually taking control of the manor, and also a confusion about the winding road ahead.
In any case, on this desolate, cold night, she had completed a major blood transfusion within the manor, gathering the core power into her own hands.
“There’s a long road ahead.” Lina helped Dilys up. “Take care of yourself.”
Dilys’s eyes were filled with gratitude. She still hadn’t recovered from her excitement. Besides “thank you,” she couldn’t say much else.
This was a position she had never dreamed of. The head maid, for her, was already a high climb, let alone the position of butler.
She was a very worldly person who loved money as much as her life. But at this moment, she briefly had the thought of pledging her life to Lina.
Although such a thought was fleeting, the look in her eyes as she looked at Lina was also more firm and respectful than before.
.
“Well then, that’s all for today’s lesson.” The private tutor closed her textbook. “Did you place the flags on the sand table?”
“I did.” Lina also closed her notebook. Her peripheral vision had already noticed Adele pacing outside the window. Her heart had long since lost its rhythm, but her face was calm and composed. “Is there a problem?”
“Very good.” The private tutor walked to her side, smiled slightly, and repeated, “Very good.”
Lina, having received praise, was not particularly happy. She said modestly, “There is still much I need to learn from you.”
“See you tomorrow.”
Lina was half a step behind the private tutor. The two of them came out of the study together. Adele was holding a bowl of chicken soup, standing to the side like an outsider.
Lina didn’t look at her and walked straight away.
Adele, who had been ignored like air: ?
“Lina, didn’t you see me?”
The question that blurted out was sharp in tone. Adele immediately felt a little guilty, but the words of apology were stuck in her throat and couldn’t come out.
She was just uncomfortable and didn’t want to apologize!
“…”
Lina turned her head to look at her. “Oh, I was just thinking about what my sister said. I didn’t notice Teacher.”
Adele’s hand, holding the bowl, was too tight.
If the porcelain bowl had a life, it would be screaming at this moment: “Stop! Stop!”
Adele’s breath hitched.
Didn’t notice me?
Didn’t notice me!
The expression on her face stiffened. “Is that so? Come and drink the soup. You study every day, you can’t neglect your body. I made it especially for you, and I even added…”
“I know. I’ll drink it.”
Before she could finish, she was interrupted by Lina again.
Adele clenched her jaw.
Lina drank it quickly, downing the thick soup in a few gulps. “Alright, I’m going to find my sister.”
As she spoke, she stared into Adele’s eyes.
Teacher, if you can’t hold it in, then make a move.
Teacher, be a little rougher with me. Even if you hurt me, I won’t blame you.
Lina was full of anticipation, but Adele just silently took the bowl and said, “Go on.”
Lina: ?
What!?
Fine! Fine! Fine!
Let’s see how long you can hold out!
Lina was so angry her tail popped out.
“Are you coming back to sleep tonight?” Adele asked in a small voice.
Lina turned and walked away, pretending not to have heard, and certainly not answering.
Adele looked at her back. The devil in her heart was riding on the angel’s head, shamelessly tempting her:
If you don’t make a move, the little rabbit will leave you completely.
Grab her and bring her back.
Deal with her properly, let her know the consequences of being disobedient…
.
Lina hadn’t been back to the top floor to sleep for several nights.
The inexplicable separation of beds made Adele very unhappy. She moved directly to the room next door.
Without a person in her arms, she always felt empty. The moment she closed her eyes, her mind would start to wander. She tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.
The manor was built in the last century. The buildings inside had been weathered by wind and rain, and the soundproofing was not good.
Another night of tossing and turning. Adele was staring at the ceiling in a daze when suddenly, footsteps sounded in the corridor, followed by the sound of the door next door opening and closing.
!
Lina’s back!?
Adele shot up, her two ears perked up, listening intently.
Fifteen minutes later.
Lina still hadn’t left. It seemed she was going to stay.
Adele pressed herself against the wall.
Thirty minutes later.
The movement in the room had completely stopped.
But Adele’s heartbeat was already deafening.
Lina’s back to sleep!
Adele jumped out of bed. Her white, fluffy ears regained their luster and perked up cheerfully.
She wanted to go over!
Adele still had many worries in her heart, but this time, before she could even hesitate, her body had already rushed out the door.
Just a look.
Just a look should be fine.
She wasn’t trying to crawl into Lina’s bed.
Adele, with dark circles under her eyes, carefully pushed open the door to Lina’s room.
She was really just going to feast her eyes. She would absolutely not eat the rabbit!
Absolutely not… but she wasn’t swearing on it.
