Chapter 7: Two Progenitors?

After discussing, the group couldn’t reach a decision. In the end, they could only look expectantly at Zhang Can’er, hoping she had a solution.

Before the apocalypse, Zhang Can’er had been the leader among the young people. If it weren’t for her leading the villagers to plant medicinal herbs, the village probably wouldn’t even have paved roads now.

So, they all habitually looked to her.

Zhang Can’er was still pondering. Sensing that they had stopped their discussion, she looked up to see them staring at her with hopeful eyes.

In that instant, she felt an immense pressure. Being the commander of a team was not so easy. One wrong decision could lead to irreversible disaster, possibly wiping out the entire team.

After some thought with her head lowered, Zhang Can’er made a decision. “Let’s take the small path. Just like Xiao An said, I’m afraid that after we deal with those two Mutants, more will appear. We could be wiped out.”

“Okay, I’ll take the lead then,” Xiao Hou said, taking his axe and heading toward the small path first.

The others followed closely behind. They tacitly placed Zhang Can’er in the middle, with the two boys at the front and back, keeping a constant watch.

Taking the small path would be a longer journey, taking twice as long as the original route.

But it was only about ten more minutes, so it wasn’t a huge problem.

They walked to the end of the small path without any trouble. Seeing Xiao Hou in front stop, the people behind him also halted.

Xiao Hou bent down, turned, and walked to Zhang Can’er, frowning. “The exit ahead is blocked by an abandoned car. There are five Mutants behind the car. How are we supposed to get out?”

Hearing this, Zhang Can’er bent down and walked a few steps forward. She saw that the exit connecting the small path to the main road was blocked by a car. The car was completely wrecked, and she couldn’t tell what had hit it. The car parts were completely scattered, and the front hood had been sent flying into the bushes nearby.

The ground in front was littered with fragments of the car’s shell. Through the car’s window frame, she could see several Mutants behind it.

Zhang Can’er’s brow furrowed tightly, but her eyes kept scanning the surroundings.

Although both sides of the small path were covered by bushes, there were some sparse areas. From these spots, she could roughly see the situation on the main road.

Zhang Can’er walked a few steps to a place with sparse vegetation and took a look. She found that there were actually no Mutants on the main road. She turned her head and saw that they were blocked by several cars at the end of the road.

From the looks of it, these cars were probably trying to enter Phantom Star Village, but they all wanted to get in first, causing them to crash into each other. She didn’t know if anyone had survived.

After observing for a while, Zhang Can’er stepped back and said to the others, “To get through, we might have to cross the main road and go up the mountain on the other side. But I don’t know if it’s dangerous in the mountains. There was a multi-car collision at the main intersection, and the people inside might have run into the mountains in a panic. But it’s hard to say if there were Mutants behind them.”

After hearing this, the group fell into a period of silence. Just then, a sound came from the bushes ahead.

The group immediately became alert. Xiao Hou subconsciously stood at the very front, nervously watching the vegetation ahead with his long-handled axe.

They didn’t have to wait long. A person walked out from the bushes.

Seeing the person, Zhang Can’er’s eyes lit up, and she hurried over.

“Sister Feng, what are you doing here? I thought you had left.”

Zhang Can’er’s voice softened unconsciously, and her eyes sparkled as she looked at Wan Feng.

Wan Feng looked away uncomfortably, not daring to look directly into Zhang Can’er’s eyes. Hearing her words, she just nodded and then said in a low voice, “Follow me.”

With that, she took Zhang Can’er’s hand, intending to lead her out.

The others quickly pulled Zhang Can’er back. Wan Feng let go and turned to look at the people behind her, saying coldly, “Don’t waste time. Follow me into the mountains first.”

“Why should we go with you?” Xiao Feng challenged her.

Wan Feng glanced at Zhang Can’er and remained silent.

Zhang Can’er knew Wan Feng’s abilities. Since she wanted to lead them into the mountains, it meant that the mountains were safer than here.

“Listen to her.”

The others looked at Zhang Can’er, puzzled.

“Sister Can’er, how can you trust her? What if she’s trying to lure us to the Mutants so she can get away herself?” Xiao Hao said with a frown.

“Exactly. And another thing, she clearly left before us, so why is she still here? Maybe she was waiting for us,” Xiao An said to Wan Feng with simmering anger.

Hearing this, the others thought the speculation made a lot of sense and all looked at Wan Feng warily.

Zhang Can’er didn’t quite understand why they were so hostile toward Wan Feng. Perhaps the shadow cast by the unexplained deaths in the village before was just too great.

With a sigh, Zhang Can’er broke free from their grasp, turned to them, and said, “Sister Feng means no harm. If she wanted to hurt you, why would she go to all this trouble? She was the one who kindly reminded us to set out for Starshine City as soon as possible. Besides, she has no reason to harm us. The reason she didn’t leave might be because she ran into some trouble. We can ask her.”

Xiao Feng frowned, wanting to say more, but Zhang Can’er shot her a look and said first, “This is not the place to talk. Let’s follow Sister Feng for now.”

Zhang Can’er turned and walked away. Seeing her coming toward her, Wan Feng also turned and walked forward, pushing aside the bushes and stooping to enter the main road.

The people behind her exchanged a look, all feeling helpless, and had no choice but to follow.

Wan Feng led the way. After entering the mountains, she led them along the path she had cleared.

After about half an hour, Wan Feng stopped under a tree. She looked up, observing the surroundings. Seeing no movement, she climbed straight up the trunk.

The others looked up and only then did they see a simple wooden platform high up in the large tree. It didn’t look very big.

After pulling Zhang Can’er up, Wan Feng paid no more attention to the others. She sat to one side, playing with the knife in her hand.

Once everyone was up, Wan Feng said to herself, “I’ve cleared out all the Mutants in the mountains. It took me quite a bit of time. The reason I didn’t leave is because there are two Progenitors on the main road. It’s impossible to get through. We need to find a way to lure them away.”

The others sat on the other side. After hearing what she said, they didn’t respond, but their expressions were all very grim.

Zhang Can’er sat down beside Wan Feng. Her brow furrowed unconsciously after hearing what she said.

“Two Progenitors? How are we supposed to lure them away?”

Wan Feng looked up at her and said softly, “It would be easy for me alone, but with so many of you, it will be difficult. We’ll have to think of another way. We’ll probably have to spend the night here. I’ll go chop some wood to reinforce the supports first.”

“I’ll go with you,” Zhang Can’er said, about to get up.

“No need. I don’t want the people in your team to say I’m trying to harm you. If anything happens, I’ll be in big trouble.”

After Wan Feng’s sarcastic remark, she climbed down from the platform.

Her words made the faces of the others on the platform flush red and white. They were clearly angered, but she had indeed brought them to a safe place, so they couldn’t say anything more and could only swallow their anger.
