Chapter 6: Uncle Jiang, I Want to Leave

After Zhang Can’er finished reading all this, the expression on her face grew even heavier. An ordinary person might have a sliver of hope against a Mutant, but encountering a Progenitor meant certain death.

Whether one killed it or simply ran away, they would be infected. For ordinary people, this was a catastrophe.

She worried for a moment that Wan Feng might encounter this thing, but then she thought, Instead of worrying about her, I should worry about myself. After all, Wan Feng was skilled and had a chance of escaping, while she could only wait for death.

With a sigh, Zhang Can’er stood up, wanting to go to the bedroom to rest, but she heard a sudden argument from Uncle Jiang’s room.

Qian Shen, who was beside her, hurried over, and Zhang Can’er followed.

“All you know is to tell us to wait, wait, wait! How much longer do we have to wait? It’s been almost a week, and the Federation still hasn’t come. I think it’s just like Miss Wan said, the Federation doesn’t care about us at all!”

“Xiao Feng, calm down first. Uncle Jiang is under a lot of pressure too. Why don’t we wait another two days and see? Maybe the Federation will come,” Xiao Su advised from the side.

“Starshine City isn’t that far from here. It’s only about a day’s drive. And the Federation has two sky-cars. If they were coming, they would have been here long ago!”

Xiao Feng’s words were a sudden wake-up call for Zhang Can’er. The Federation did have two sky-cars, one for cargo and one for people. A journey that would normally take a month could be completed in about fifteen minutes. One could imagine how fast those things were.

Since they had such things, why wasn’t the Federation using them? Or perhaps they had used them but just hadn’t come here. It was just as Wan Feng had said: the Federation wouldn’t care about the people in a poor village.

There was another reason: the fuel for the sky-cars was rare now. They wouldn’t waste it on various villages because the villagers were worth less than the fuel.

Thinking of this, Zhang Can’er couldn’t sit still any longer. “Uncle Jiang, the Federation may have really given up on us.”

Zhang Can’er spoke up suddenly, and everyone turned to look at her.

“The Federation might have already sent the sky-cars, but the villages are far apart, and they don’t want to waste fuel. So they probably just picked up the important people and went straight back,” Zhang Can’er voiced her speculation.

Uncle Jiang’s face was grim. He said nothing.

The entire room fell into a deathly silence, with only the sound of everyone’s breathing and the occasional roars from outside.

As if she had made up her mind, Zhang Can’er spoke, “Uncle Jiang, I want to leave.”

Uncle Jiang looked up at her, then lowered his head again, speaking in a thick, hoarse voice, “Let’s wait a little longer. Just a little longer.”

Xiao Feng shot him a glare. The word “wait” was the last thing she wanted to hear right now. She slapped Xiao Su’s hand away and stood beside Zhang Can’er.

“Can Can, I’ll go with you.”

Zhang Can’er looked at her and nodded, then turned to the others and said in a solemn voice, “Who else wants to go with us?”

After a moment, only four more people came forward, one after another.

Zhang Can’er glanced around and, seeing that no one else was coming, looked at Jiang Shu and Qian Shen. “Uncle Jiang, Auntie Qian, and everyone else, take care. I hope to see you in Starshine City.”

With that, she turned and left. She was not an indecisive person. Now that she had thought things through, she would not hesitate any longer. She would not change a decision once it was made.

Back in the bedroom, she took out several backpacks. She was grateful for the various backpacks she had bought on a whim.

After distributing the backpacks to the few people behind her, she asked, “Have you all thought this through? Following me out, you could very well die.”

After taking a backpack, Xiao Feng started stuffing clothes into it. Hearing Zhang Can’er’s words, she turned back and smiled. “Waiting here is also death. We might as well take a chance. Maybe we can fight our way to survival.”

The others all nodded in agreement, so Zhang Can’er said no more. She turned to grab two sets of clothes, then packed some medicine, water, and food. After that, she went downstairs to find a few choppers.

Because she had gone through a phase of liking various knives and swords, she had bought two watermelon knives. Of course, she did have a Tang sword in her bedroom, but it wasn’t sharpened and was less useful than a watermelon knife.

Then she took two wood-chopping knives, one with a curved blade and one with a straight blade. Finally, she found a long-handled axe in a corner.

After rummaging in the storage room for a while and finding no other usable weapons, she went to the kitchen and took two kitchen cleavers.

She brought everything up and laid it all out on the bed.

“Come and pick one for yourselves. These are all the usable weapons in the house.”

Xiao Feng was the first to choose a watermelon knife. The other two girls each chose a wood-chopping knife. One of the two boys chose the other watermelon knife, and the other chose the axe. No one picked the kitchen cleavers.

After all, the cleavers were too short, meant for close-quarters combat, which carried a high risk of being scratched.

Seeing Zhang Can’er take the two cleavers, Xiao Feng felt bad and went over to her. “Why don’t you switch with me? Those cleavers are a bit too short.”

Zhang Can’er smiled but didn’t agree. “It doesn’t matter who takes the cleavers. I don’t have much experience anyway. You all do, so you can guide me. It’s best for you to have those weapons.”

“Okay. In that case, you stay in the back. Leave the Mutants to us.”

The others also looked at Zhang Can’er in agreement.

Seeing how everyone was looking out for her, Zhang Can’er gave a genuine smile. “Thank you all.”

After they finished packing, they said goodbye to Jiang Shu and the others.

After sneaking out the back door and up the mountain, Zhang Can’er led the way toward the main road. The group had discussed it earlier; there were bound to be abandoned cars on the main road. For now, the plan was to find a car.

The mountain path was not easy to walk. The uncleared parts were full of weeds and shrubs. But with knives in hand, it wasn’t so bad. They hacked their way through, and after an hour, they reached the village’s main path.

A few minutes’ walk along this path would lead them to the main road.

The group carefully descended from the mountain, vigilantly scanning the path for any Mutants.

Zhang Can’er had them all crouch down and sneak along the bushes on the right.

But they hadn’t gone far before they saw two Mutants in the distance.

Zhang Can’er was so scared she stopped breathing. She gestured for them to go back.

The group returned to their starting point. After checking behind them and seeing no danger, they began to discuss in low voices.

“What do we do? Do we charge in and kill them, or do we take a detour?” Xiao Feng asked.

One of the girls, Xiao Li, replied, “Let’s take a detour. It’s best if we avoid contact with the Mutants as much as possible.”

“But we don’t know if there are Mutants on the small path. Besides, it’s very narrow, with man-high bushes on both sides. Behind the bushes are farmlands. It’s planting season now, so the fields are all muddy. If we get stuck, there’s no way to escape,” said a boy named Xiao Hao, frowning.

“Then what? Why don’t we just charge through? There are six of us. Are we afraid of two Mutants?” another boy, Xiao Hou, said impatiently.

The girl next to Xiao Li, Xiao An, glanced at him and retorted in a low voice, “Charge through, easy for you to say, harder to do. I just noticed that those two Mutants are not far from Auntie Zhang’s house. Who knows if more Mutants will rush out of her house after we deal with those two. I, for one, choose the small path. At least not many people walk that way, so it might be safer over there.”
