Farming in the Apocalypse: My Assassin Wife is Super Gentle 5

Chapter 5: Wan Feng Really Left

“It’s no trouble,” Zhang Can’er said and turned to leave.

When she entered her bedroom, she saw Wan Feng lying on the bed with her eyes closed, resting. She subconsciously lightened her steps.

“Drink the congee on the table.”

The sudden voice made Zhang Can’er stop. She glanced at the person who still had her eyes closed, then turned to see the sweet potato congee still being kept warm on the table.

It was as if a string in her heart had been plucked.

“Okay.”

Wan Feng’s eyes opened slightly as she watched Zhang Can’er ladle the congee into a bowl and eat it in small sips. The corners of her lips curved up in a slight smile, a smile she herself didn’t even notice.

After finishing the congee, Zhang Can’er cleaned up and then climbed onto the bed, kneeling beside Wan Feng and whispering, “Can you help me get the induction cooker from downstairs?”

“No.”

“Then what will it take for you to agree?”

Zhang Can’er reached out and tugged on the corner of Wan Feng’s clothes, her voice soft.

The gentle, sweet voice made Wan Feng open her eyes. God only knew how fast her heart was beating when she heard that voice. She didn’t understand what was happening to her; it felt like something was about to slip out of her control.

She sat up and pressed a hand to her chest. After she had calmed down a bit, she looked at Zhang Can’er’s pleading gaze and sighed. This woman seemed to be able to soften her heart every time.

“Don’t look at me like that. I’ll go.” With that, she got out of bed and left the room as if fleeing.

Since they knew people were coming today, they hadn’t placed the table in front of the door to avoid the hassle of moving it. It wouldn’t be too late to move it back at night.

Zhang Can’er watched Wan Feng’s departing back and smiled. She seemed to have figured out how to get along with this person.

Wan Feng was quick. She was back in less than a minute, handing the pot, induction cooker, and other items to Zhang Can’er. Without a word, she walked past her, went straight to the bed, and lay down again.

Zhang Can’er glanced at her and deliberately said with a soft, smiling voice, “Thank you, Sister Feng.”

Wan Feng just waved a hand, and there was no further response.

Zhang Can’er wasn’t annoyed. She smiled and took the things over to the other room.

Afterward, Zhang Can’er brought some more food over. She wasn’t sure how long it would last. Hopefully, it would be enough until the rescue arrived.

Three days passed peacefully, and then Wan Feng began to pack her things.

Zhang Can’er watched her pack, a look of confusion in her eyes. “Sister Feng, are you really leaving? Why not wait a few more days? Maybe the rescue team will be here soon.”

Without looking up, Wan Feng continued to pack clothes and some snacks into her backpack. “I’d advise you not to wait either. I’ve already said what I needed to say. The Federation won’t care about a single village.”

She zipped up the backpack, slung it over her shoulder, and looked at Zhang Can’er with a sharp black dagger in her hand. “Are you really not coming with me?”

Zhang Can’er lowered her head. “I want to wait a little longer.”

Wan Feng said no more. She stared at her for a moment, then turned and left.

She walked to the door of the room where Jiang Shu and the others were staying. Because there were so many people, the door was left open during the day and only closed at night.

Seeing a figure appear at the doorway, Xiao Su jumped up in alarm, shielding the others behind him. Even after seeing it was Wan Feng, he didn’t relax.

“What are you doing here?”

Wan Feng ignored him, her gaze sweeping over the people in the room. “I advise you to find your own way to Starshine City. Don’t count on a rescue. The Federation couldn’t care less about the people in one village.”

“Nonsense! How could the Federation not care about us? Is the tax we pay every year fake?” Xiao Wang was the first to jump up and retort.

“Exactly. I think you have some ulterior motive. You want us to leave so you can take over this place.”

Zhang Can’er arrived just in time to hear this. She frowned and looked at the person who had spoken. “Xiao Yu.”

The person called Xiao Yu reined it in a little after seeing Zhang Can’er, but he still said stubbornly, “Even if she’s just putting on an act about leaving now, who the hell knows what will happen after she tricks us into going out.”

Xiao Yu’s words put everyone on high alert. It was true. Who knew what would happen if they went out? What if Wan Feng led those monsters to them? She could lead them all to their deaths, then come back here to take over, waiting comfortably for rescue. The thought alone was terrifying.

Wan Feng said nothing, turned, and walked away. Zhang Can’er tried to grab her but missed. She watched as the woman walked into the storage room, and then there was silence.

Zhang Can’er tiptoed down to take a look. The storage room was empty. The door was properly closed.

Wan Feng had really left.

After accepting this fact, Zhang Can’er felt a void in her heart. When she came back to her senses, her eyes were moist. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. She had only known Wan Feng for a few days.

By the time she returned to Jiang Shu and the others, Zhang Can’er had composed herself.

Seeing her, Jiang Shu asked quickly, “Has Miss Wan left?”

Zhang Can’er nodded. “Uncle Jiang, will the Federation really come? It’s been five days, including the day it happened. There’s been no news from the Federation. Is there… really any point in waiting?”

Jiang Shu frowned and sat down in a chair. “Can Can, don’t be anxious. The Federation sent a message today naming those monsters and even included pictures. You can look later. The Federation is definitely working on a solution. They probably ran into some trouble, which is why they couldn’t come right away. Let’s just wait a little longer.”

Zhang Can’er lowered her head and replied softly, “It’s not a question of whether I’m anxious or not. The problem is we’re running out of food. If we wait any longer, we’ll starve to death here. The power is still on, but once it goes out, we’ll lose our only connection to the outside world.”

“Can Can, sit down first. Don’t you still have sweet potatoes in your house? We’ll just eat less for the next few days and ration strictly. That way, we can last a few more days,” Qian Shen said gently, pulling Zhang Can’er down to sit beside her.

Zhang Can’er frowned but just nodded and looked down at her phone.

There was indeed a notice from the Federation, confirming the name of the monsters and providing detailed solutions.

Zhang Can’er looked at the first gruesome picture and remembered the first time she had seen one of those things. Her legs had gone weak with fear, and she had been plagued by nightmares afterward.

The Federation called these things “Mutants.” But as Zhang Can’er continued to read, she saw a different picture.

The picture showed a relatively small and thin creature, though that was only in comparison to a human. It looked to be about half a person’s height.

Messy black hair was strewn all over its body, covered in red bloodstains, some of which had already caked. Its completely black eyes revealed a vicious light, and bits of flesh and sticky blood clung to its two rows of fine, sharp teeth.

It looked very much like a wingless bat, but its four limbs were like a monkey’s.

The Federation had labeled it as an extremely dangerous creature and the source of the incident. Thus, it was named the “Progenitor.”

Zhang Can’er scrolled down further and saw the detailed description written by the Federation.

One point was very important: the Progenitor’s blood could seep into the skin to cause infection. The Federation’s recommendation was to run upon encountering it, then kill it from a distance and incinerate the body.
