Chapter 63: Methods
The mess in the living room was gone. All that remained was a faint, soft scent of incense, silently covering every inch of the air.
Yan Wei stood quietly in front of the large floor-to-ceiling window, the cigarette butt between her fingers flickering, burning out a scarlet red. Surui stopped a meter behind her, cautiously maintaining her distance, and softened her voice, choosing her words carefully, “Miss Jiang has already returned to the hotel.”
Mo Yun’s name was held tightly in her throat, and she didn’t dare to mention a single word.
She should have taken the initiative to report—after all, the one lying in the hospital at this moment was Yan Wei’s mother.
But years of experience had long since made her understand that at this moment, unless that woman was really dead, any news about “Mo Yun” was a taboo that could not be touched in Yan Wei’s presence.
Time flowed in silence.
Yan Wei didn’t turn her head. The huge glass clearly reflected her profile at this moment.
Surui had never seen such a deep coldness on her face. That pressure, like standing in front of a cold, snowy mountain, quietly climbed up her back, forcing out a fine cold sweat.
After a long time, the figure by the window finally moved.
“Is the contract done?”
Her voice showed no emotion.
“There are still a few supplementary agreements from Huadian. It’ll be quick,” Surui replied quickly. “But all of Miss Jiang’s existing brokerage contracts have been smoothly transferred to Shenhai.”
After this sentence, a chill shot up Surui’s forehead without any warning.
Just half a month ago, when Shenhai’s legal team had begun to secretly handle this matter, she had speculated about Yan Wei’s intentions, and had even vaguely felt that this might be some kind of special treatment for Jiang Mi—after all, the peak of Shenhai was by no means something Huadian could reach. The leap in resources was a pleasant surprise.
However, at this moment, this thought was only cold.
When all of Jiang Mi’s professional lifelines were gathered in Yan Wei’s palm, if Jiang Mi wanted to break free, the price of breach of contract would be astronomical…
Especially since the legal team had raised the original amount to a sum that Jiang Mi could never repay in her lifetime.
Surui’s gaze subconsciously swept over Yan Wei’s straight and graceful back.
The neon lights outside the window floated on her cold silhouette. In that instant, a terrifying guess arose in Surui’s heart: had Yan Wei already anticipated today’s confrontation with Jiang Mi?
Seeing Yan Wei’s silence and no further reaction.
Surui thought for a moment, then said in a low voice, “Then you should rest well. Tomorrow’s schedule has been postponed. At eight-thirty, the doctor will come to change your dressing. Also… is there anything you need me to do?”
What awaited her was still only silence.
A moment later, a light sound of the door lock engaging came from the entrance.
The room instantly sank into a deathly vacuum.
Yan Wei was still standing by the window. The thick night enveloped the brilliant and dazzling lights and noise in the distance, as if it were from another world. She finally turned, forcefully extinguishing the scarlet embers between her fingers on the bottom of the cold ashtray. As she moved, her gaze swept over the glaring emptiness on the desktop—the vase that had once held white roses had long since been completely abandoned in the depths of the trash along with the bouquet.
In her eyes, under a deep, icy coldness, an uncontrollable agitation was faintly churning.
Her gaze fell back on the transparent ashtray. Its cold luster at this moment seemed exceptionally unsightly, even superfluous.
With a sweep of her palm, it was overturned.
A dull “thud.”
The cold, heavy object rolled a few times on the floor and finally came to a rest.
She had known that one day it would come to this, but when this day really came, she actually felt a hint of a dull ache. Yan Wei sat on the sofa, her unstable emotions making her breathe a little heavily. Her fingers were tightly clenched, but there was always a fire in her heart that could not be vented.
She felt the pain more clearly.
She lit another cigarette, her pale lips trembling slightly. She held the cigarette between her teeth, and a strand of hair slid down her cheek, as if it were about to touch the flame.
She took a deep drag.
But it still didn’t relieve the pain.
How strange. It was clearly such a small wound. How could it hurt so much?
In her vision, she seemed to meet Jiang Mi’s terrified gaze again. Was that fear for her, or for her and Mo Yun? Yan Wei took a heavy drag of her cigarette. The spicy scent pierced her throat, and her chaotic thoughts were torn open with a scorching pain.
How could it be today? The first time Jiang Mi had set foot in this space, it was also the first time Mo Yun had come uninvited.
What a fine, exquisite “chance encounter.”
Yan Wei suddenly lowered her head and laughed. The laughter was choked by the smoke and turned into a series of heart-wrenching coughs. Her eyes were instantly filled with bloodshot veins.
Such a clumsy and vicious drama. After so many years, Mo Yun could still pull it off so smoothly. It was hard on her.
No wonder.
No wonder Mo Yun had come to force her.
—”It was you! You killed her! Why do you get to live so well?”
—”Why do you get to live like a normal person?”
—”You’re not worthy! Yan Wei, you’re not worthy in this lifetime!”
—”No one will love a lunatic like you! No one will love a murderer!”
No wonder Mo Yun had smashed the vase as if she had lost her soul. No wonder that sharp piece of glass had been aimed at her with a suicidal madness… no wonder she had used the most vicious words to scrape away her flesh inch by inch, pushing her to the brink of losing control…
It turned out that all Mo Yun wanted was that moment.
The moment the lock turned, and Jiang Mi pushed the door open… that moment.
Yan Wei raised her hand. The fingertips holding the cigarette were trembling finely, uncontrollably.
Very good. Congratulations, her mother was very successful.
Yan Wei’s eyes were terrifyingly red.
Mo Yun knew everything, but since when had Mo Yun known that she and Jiang Mi were in contact? And how did Mo Yun know the time Jiang Mi was coming today?
Did Jiang Mi tell her? Was Jiang Mi in contact with Mo Yun behind her back?
Or was it someone else around her?
Surui?
Yan Wei’s nails were digging into her skin. Only when she felt a stickiness on her leg did she realize that the blood from her palm had seeped out at some point.
She glanced at it indifferently, but didn’t make any move.
What she was thinking of was the scene of Jiang Mi anxiously bandaging Mo Yun’s wound. At that moment, what was Jiang Mi thinking? Did she think she was scary, terrifying?
Or did she want to get away immediately?
Yan Wei had thought about what Jiang Mi would be like when she saw her true self, but when this day really came, Yan Wei felt that her heart had never beaten so fast, except for when she was in bed with Jiang Mi.
What would Jiang Mi’s reaction be?
She was very regretful. She shouldn’t have let Jiang Mi go. She wanted to see Jiang Mi’s reaction with her own eyes again.
Just looking at her like this, Jiang Mi’s expression, frame by frame…
Would Jiang Mi run? She would.
After all, any normal person would run.
Yan Wei’s pale lips were holding a cigarette. Her lips were trembling slightly. Then, she lowered her eyes, picked up her phone, and made a call.
She began to speak, her voice as if frozen in a layer of ice, both cold and flat, “Starting tomorrow, all the houses under my name, whether it’s a villa in the city or a river-view apartment—all of them are to be put up for sale. For the ones that are being rented, terminate the leases early.”
The other end said something.
Yan Wei narrowed her eyes. “Including Mo Xi.”
**
Jiang Mi didn’t sleep much.
She had several nightmares in a row. The clearest one was of Mo Yun and Yan Wei standing in a field of white roses. Thunder rumbled, and it started to rain. Yan Wei was holding a knife and was about to go towards Mo Yun. She shouted, “Yan Wei!”
The next second, Yan Wei looked at her.
But at the same time, the scene changed. The person holding the knife was actually Mo Yun.
She ran over, but it was empty.
Then she found that the white rose garden had turned red.
The world was spinning. She ran around, but she couldn’t find Yan Wei. She shouted Yan Wei’s name and finally saw Yan Wei’s back on a bridge.
Yan Wei looked at her with that cold gaze and said something. Just as she was about to hear clearly, the ground suddenly started to shake…
Jiang Mi woke up.
Her heart was pounding in her chest, so much that her ears were ringing. She gasped for breath a few times before she could barely pull herself out of the embers of the nightmare. Her fingertips fumbled for the phone by her bed.
The screen lit up. It was a call from Zhao Jia. It was just past nine. Her announcement today had long since been postponed. This was far from her work time today.
She swiped to answer, her voice carrying a lingering fatigue, “Hello?”
On the other end of the line, Zhao Jia’s tone was unusually anxious. “Jiang Mi, when did you sign the transfer contract? How come I don’t know?”
Jiang Mi was stunned for a moment, her sleepiness completely gone. “What transfer? What are you talking about?”
“I knew it! Even if you really wanted to change companies, how could you not tell me in advance?” Zhao Jia’s voice was filled with suppressed anger and disbelief. “Just now, a business partner suddenly asked me why all the contacts had been changed! Only then did I know that people from Shenhai had come over early in the morning and directly took over your schedule for today, saying that they would be responsible for all your work from now on! I was so scared I immediately ran to the branch of Huadian, and the people there told me—” She took a deep breath. “All of your contracts had already been completely transferred before eight this morning!”
The last bit of sleepiness was completely drained from Jiang Mi. A clarity crept up from the soles of her feet.
She sat up abruptly in bed, her phone pressed to her ear, her knuckles unconsciously clenching the bedspread.
The air was frozen, and only her slightly heavier breathing was clearly audible in the silence.
On the other end of the line, Zhao Jia was also silent for a few seconds, as if waiting for her reaction. “…Jiang Mi? Are you okay?”
After a moment, Jiang Mi found her voice, dry and short, “Mmm.”
“So, Yan Wei and her team did it behind your back? What is this?” Zhao Jia’s voice suddenly rose, with a hint of questioning. “It can’t be some kind of ‘surprise’ they prepared for you, right?!”
Huadian and Shenhai were worlds apart.
But even so, to move a person’s career foundation was no different from controlling their lifeline. Without even a word of notice, the ownership was just quietly changed like this? And in connection with what had happened last night, the unease in Zhao Jia’s heart was growing wildly, making her heart panic.
Jiang Mi closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, the brief bewilderment in her eyes had been covered by a layer of anger.
“It’s not a surprise,” her voice was very light.
“Not a surprise?” Zhao Jia’s voice was almost about to break through the receiver. “Then what is it? To just take control of your future and lifeline without a word, this is clearly—”
She didn’t finish, but the word hung in the air: a threat.
Zhao Jia abruptly stopped.
“What on earth happened between you two last night? How did you offend her so badly?” Zhao Jia’s voice was urgent. She needed to know every detail of that conflict in order to judge how to deal with this new “master.”
Jiang Mi was silent for a longer time.
The light from the window fell on her face, but it didn’t reflect any warmth.
“I did offend her,” Jiang Mi was silent for a moment, then said, “but she won’t really do anything to me. I’ll just work as usual.”
On this point, Jiang Mi was certain.
Last night, she and Mo Yun had just left like that. After that, there was no more contact. Jiang Mi was not unprepared. She was betting that Yan Wei’s unchallengeable desire for control would make her react first.
It was just that she hadn’t expected Yan Wei’s counterattack to be so ruthless, so unsparing.
Her current net worth, plus those unfulfilled contracts, for Shenhai Entertainment to swallow it all in one go, the price was by no means small. More importantly… Jiang Mi’s eyelashes lifted slightly, her fingertips unconsciously curling—this thunderous method could not have started from last night.
When was it? When had Yan Wei started to have the idea of using this kind of forceful means on her…
Yan Wei doing this was nothing more than telling her that she was still in her palm. No matter what her thoughts were, she could not leave her.
Was it scary?
Of course, it was scary.
Jiang Mi found that her hands were also trembling a little. No wonder the people around Yan Wei were afraid of her. No wonder she occasionally felt that Yan Wei was very different. The scene last night, and even the Yan Wei who had done this, were things she had never seen before.
But Jiang Mi found that her heart was much calmer than she had imagined.
Her trembling was not even because she was afraid, but because she was angry, angry that Yan Wei had actually used her methods on her, angry that Yan Wei had actually never really trusted her. But, it was also because of this that she felt that her decision was right. If they continued like this, they would not last long.
Having figured this out, Jiang Mi suddenly felt relaxed again.
Even, apart from that anger, Jiang Mi belatedly found that in the deepest part of her heart, there was also a hint of an inexplicable joy.
Although this emotion was very inappropriate, in her purpose, Yan Wei’s possessiveness towards her was the most important part. And now, what Yan Wei had done had further strengthened this idea of hers.
She had really thought that they would end here.
But before that, she wanted to try one last time.
She wanted to take a gamble.
This time, she wanted Yan Wei to come to her.
