Chapter 62: Meddling
In the evening, at eight o’clock, the wind outside the car window was wrapped in the heat and humidity of summer, seeping into the car in wisps.
Jiang Mi was half-leaning against the window, her eyelids slightly closed. Yan Wei’s “see you tonight” inadvertently floated into her mind. No matter how much unhappiness there had been between her and Yan Wei recently, at least in that moment, her heart was sweet.
The car was heading in a direction completely unfamiliar to Jiang Mi, to another of Yan Wei’s residences. She knew that Yan Wei had other places to live in Huai City, but this was the first time she had gone there in person.
Only after arriving did she realize that the security of this high-end apartment was very strict. Entry and exit required verification and registration, and visitor vehicles needed to be contacted by the residents. She had contacted Yan Wei in advance, but had not received a reply. After waiting for a moment, Jiang Mi gave up.
“I’ll go in by myself.”
Zhao Jia was not very reassured.
“It’s too conspicuous to be stuck here. And I can handle it on my own. Don’t worry.” Jiang Mi’s tone was light. She waved at her, then pushed open the door and got out of the car.
Just as her foot touched the ground, she took out her phone again, her fingertips tapping, and sent a follow-up message to Zhao Jia: [I probably won’t be back tonight. Don’t worry about me.]
Zhao Jia: [Tch.]
A few seconds later, Zhao Jia: [Use protection.]
Jiang Mi: “…”
A hint of an imperceptible heat quietly spread across her ears. In fact, in all this time, although she and Yan Wei had been reckless, they had never had any marking behavior.
Thinking about it carefully, she and Yan Wei had never specifically discussed this matter. It was just that once in a while, when it wasn’t enough, they would bite each other’s glands…
Especially Yan Wei.
Yan Wei loved to bite her glands. When she was deep in passion, Yan Wei would use her teeth or the tip of her tongue to grind against her. Once, during a heat, she had almost broken through her defenses.
“Marking” symbolized belonging, and it also meant an unreserved giving and a complete physical and mental dependence.
Generally speaking, the effect of marking on an Alpha was relatively reversible, while for an Omega, if they had experienced three or more deep, permanent markings, if they wanted to separate, they would have to go through a painful “withdrawal.” Like breaking free from the deepest addiction, the process was often inseparable from the intervention of drugs and even systematic treatment.
So Jiang Mi had always maintained an almost-reverent caution towards the word “marking.” To her, like a promise, it was a lifelong matter.
Her chaotic thoughts were like a runaway wild horse, and they ran all the way to the fantasy of their future—publicly announcing their relationship, spending the rest of their lives together…
A sudden, low honk interrupted her inexplicable thoughts. Jiang Mi came back to her senses. Perhaps it was this honk, but her heart was still beating at a high frequency.
The night wind blew through the shade of the trees, casting a swaying shadow at her feet. Perhaps it was also because of this that she felt a hint of unease as she walked on the path between the apartments.
Jiang Mi followed the navigation on her phone and, after five minutes, finally found the building Yan Wei had sent her.
She entered the unit’s security code, and after entering, she directly pressed the button for the 16th floor.
While waiting downstairs, she glanced at the unresponsive phone screen. She wasn’t anxious, but on the contrary, a subtle thought arose: appearing at this moment that Yan Wei hadn’t expected, was it an unexpected surprise?
For so many days, they hadn’t spoken properly, hadn’t been close. Was this a chance for a reconciliation?
As Jiang Mi was thinking, the elevator went up floor by floor.
16th floor.
Jiang Mi walked out of the elevator. There were two apartments on each floor. The apartment number was 1602.
She swore, if she had known that what she would see after entering the password would be this, she would never have done it.
Never in this lifetime.
As she entered the last digit of the password, and the lock core made a light “click” sound, a hoarse, sharp shout that she had never heard from Yan Wei’s mouth suddenly burst out from the crack in the door, “Don’t come in!”
What kind of emotion was wrapped in that voice?
It was the coldness of falling into a ten-thousand-fathom abyss, so bone-chilling, and it also hid a strong hatred and a certain desperate ruthlessness.
Her heart was as if it had been hit hard by a heavy hammer, and it suddenly tightened. But it was all too late.
The door had already been pushed open.
The scene in front of her was like ice water being poured over her head.
Mo Yun was slumped on the edge of the carpet, a glaring wound on her arm. Scarlet blood was seeping out from between her fingers, dripping onto the shiny tiles, spreading into a small patch of dark red.
Shattered glass shards were scattered on the floor, and a few white roses, which had long been trampled beyond recognition, were lying among them, their petals stained with blood, so filthy.
Mo Yun’s body was trembling violently. Jiang Mi couldn’t see the expression on her face, but she could clearly feel the fear and panic that was spreading from her whole body.
And Yan Wei was half-kneeling in front of Mo Yun, holding a sharp piece of glass in her hand.
The moment the door opened, she looked up, her gaze like a blade quenched in ice, firmly fixed on the dazed Jiang Mi at the door.
In those eyes that Jiang Mi had once been so attached to, at this moment, there was only a bone-chilling coldness and a complete strangeness that Jiang Mi had never seen before.
“Get out.”
Two cold words were squeezed out from between her lips, with an irresistible pheromone pressure, instantly freezing the air in the room.
The bright light from the ceiling lamp cast a cold, glaring light on the piece of glass in Yan Wei’s hand.
Her fingertips trembled uncontrollably for a moment.
Mo Yun also seemed to have been suddenly awakened. She turned her head and saw Jiang Mi standing at the door. Her eyes were instantly filled with bloodshot veins of terror, and she almost screamed, “Mimi! Run—she’s a lunatic! She’s going to kill me!”
“Shut up!”
A low roar, suppressing a rage, was thrown at Mo Yun. Yan Wei’s appearance at this moment was so strange that Jiang Mi’s heart stopped for a moment—the area around her eyes was as red as blood, and she was holding the sharp piece of glass so tightly that thick blood was winding down her fair wrist.
That scene made Jiang Mi’s eyes twitch violently. An impulse mixed with fear and strong worry broke through her reason. She rushed in without thinking, her voice trembling, “Yan Wei! Put it down first!”
“Don’t come over! Don’t you understand?!” Yan Wei’s tone suddenly rose, with a sharp hoarseness.
But Jiang Mi’s footsteps did not stop in the slightest.
A wave of anger, mixed with anxiety and a dull ache, uncontrollably welled up from the depths of her chest—at this point, Yan Wei’s first reaction was still to push her away, to isolate her!
“Yan Wei,” Jiang Mi’s voice was trembling, her eyes firmly locked on the dangerous piece of glass and her blood-stained hand, “do you know what you’re doing?!”
Hearing this, Yan Wei’s gloomy gaze was glued to Jiang Mi’s approaching feet. Until Jiang Mi stood still, her gaze seemed to finally remember to fall back on the blood-stained “weapon” in her hand, and then she swept over the mess and blood on the floor. The fingers holding the glass were spasming slightly from excessive force, and her knuckles were so white they were bloodless.
Her fingers unconsciously tightened.
In the end, it still came to this.
Jiang Mi finally saw it.
Yan Wei looked up, her deep gaze piercing Jiang Mi’s face, as if she were looking for something in that pale face.
Jiang Mi had already approached.
Mo Yun’s face was ashen. The wound on her arm, with the flesh rolled up, even though she had temporarily covered it with her coat, the gruesome scene made Jiang Mi’s stomach churn, and she barely dared to look closely.
And opposite her, Yan Wei, that blood-stained piece of glass was still in her hand.
“Yan…”
Just as she had uttered one word, she was cut off by that bone-chilling voice:
“Jiang Mi,” Yan Wei’s voice was terrifyingly low, “this is the last time I’ll say it—get out.”
Jiang Mi’s voice was so tight it was about to break. “You’re telling me to get out now? To get out in this situation? Yan Wei, what do you think I am?”
She pressed Mo Yun’s wound, but her gaze never left Yan Wei’s hand. She watched the fresh blood come out, and even her hands were trembling. She didn’t want to figure out who was right and who was wrong now. That wasn’t the important thing now. “Can you put it down first? Let’s go to the hospital first.”
Yan Wei only felt a wave of dizziness, strangely intertwined with a twisted, blood-boiling excitement.
Her nasal cavity was filled with a thick smell of rust, as if it had ignited the most primitive instinct in her body. Her heart was pounding wildly in her chest, so fast that she was numb. Even the sharp pain of the glass cutting her palm was completely drowned out.
This scene in front of her seemed to be what was supposed to happen. Everyone was on the opposite side of her.
Now, even Jiang Mi was among them.
She felt that she should stay sober, should calm down. But her limbs were sending signals that were contrary to her will—they had betrayed her, and they were trembling uncontrollably. The source of the trembling was deeply rooted in the coldest and hottest part of her heart.
When did this situation start?
Oh, it seemed to have started when Jiang Mi came in, from seeing the fear in Jiang Mi’s eyes. It was so familiar, so familiar that it suddenly made her feel a hint of pain.
“So…” Yan Wei’s voice was like sand dried by the deep sea, dry and dangerous, “you’re choosing to… stand on the same side as her?”
“I only know that you both need a doctor now!” Jiang Mi forced herself to calm down, her voice low and powerful, trying to pull the situation back to a rational track.
However, before her words had faded, her cold wrist was suddenly seized by Mo Yun’s blood-stained hand.
Mo Yun was like she was grabbing a life-saving straw. “Jiang Mi! Stay away from her! She’ll kill you! Do you know how her mother died?! It was Yan Wei! She was the one who personally pushed her mom onto the road and got her hit by a car! She’s a lunatic! And now she’s going to…” The unfinished words were swallowed by the suddenly torn air.
Because the next second, with a speed and strength she had never had before, Jiang Mi suddenly grabbed Yan Wei’s blood-stained hand, which was reaching for Mo Yun’s throat!
Extreme terror exploded in Jiang Mi’s eyes. She said, her voice lost, “Yan Wei! What are you doing?!”
Perhaps even Jiang Mi herself didn’t realize what kind of stormy fear was gathered in her eyes as she looked at Yan Wei at this moment.
Time froze in that instant.
After a dead silence that was almost immeasurable.
Yan Wei seemed to have forgotten to breathe. Her pale lips moved slowly, as if with a hint of a smile, and she squeezed out the words from between her teeth:
“Mimi, are you afraid of me?”
What does she think I’m going to do to Mo Yun?
Kill Mo Yun in front of her? Think I’m a murderer? Or a lunatic?
Ah… that’s right.
She’s not wrong.
She is a lunatic.
“I’m not.” Jiang Mi had no time to distinguish at this moment. All she wanted was to deal with the shocking wounds of the two of them as soon as possible. She carefully helped Mo Yun to sit against the wall, took out her phone, and was about to dial 120, but immediately realized that such a commotion would definitely attract attention.
The top priority was to leave here immediately and take the two of them to the hospital.
Mo Yun struggled, wanting to continue her accusation, but Jiang Mi decisively cut her off, “Auntie, the wound is important. I’ll take you to the hospital first.”
She had no way of knowing the whole truth, but there was a voice in her heart that was incomparably clear: Yan Wei would never have become like this without a reason.
Jiang Mi turned and quickly turned in Yan Wei’s direction, only to find that the other party had already discarded the blood-stained piece of glass. She quickly stepped forward, instinctively wanting to check the still-bleeding wound on Yan Wei’s palm, but she was mercilessly pushed away by the other party.
In that instant, their eyes met.
The ice needles that had condensed in Yan Wei’s eyes pierced Jiang Mi’s heart, making her breath hitch, and a fine pain spread along her nerves. “Yan Wei…”
“I’ll have someone handle it.” Yan Wei’s voice was flat and calm, with no emotion. “If you want to take her, then take her.”
This tone, in a daze, had returned to her past distant and cold indifference.
She was like a different person from the one who had been entangled in hostility and on the verge of losing control just a moment ago.
However, Yan Wei’s calmness at this moment stirred a deeper chill in Jiang Mi’s heart. She suppressed the churning emotions in her chest, her voice a little tight, “In your eyes, can I just leave you alone?”
Yan Wei didn’t respond, not even bothering to let her gaze linger on her face.
She just silently bent down and pulled out a small home first-aid kit from under the low table by the sofa.
“No need.” She opened the first-aid kit, her tone devoid of any emotion.
“Mimi, how can you still dare to get close to her?! Stay away from her. Getting involved with her will ruin your life…” Mo Yun’s voice was weak but urgent.
“Auntie! Don’t say it!”
Jiang Mi didn’t want to hear these things. It made her look like she was on the opposite side of Yan Wei. She glanced at Mo Yun’s lip color and didn’t dare to delay any longer. She said to Yan Wei, “Yan Wei, let’s go to the hospital together, okay?”
Even at this point, her tone when she spoke to Yan Wei was still soft. She was even rapidly thinking in her mind: How should I explain it to the doctor later? Who should I contact to minimize the impact on Yan Wei? Who should I call first after I go out? … she had already quickly calculated it all.
In the cramped air, the silence was stagnant for two seconds.
Yan Wei suddenly let out a very light, but piercingly cold laugh. She finally looked up. Those eyes, which had been filled with complex emotions, were now left with only an empty coldness and a sharp scrutiny. Every word was like a sharp cone, accurately piercing Jiang Mi:
“Jiang Mi, don’t you sometimes think you’re too meddlesome? You have to meddle in other people’s affairs, and other people’s family affairs. You’re meddling in so many people’s affairs. Can you handle it?”
A piece of Jiang Mi’s heart suddenly went empty.
A sour, stabbing pain suddenly rushed up her nasal cavity. With the little bit of self-respect she had left, she forced back the crumbling moisture.
So that’s how it is. She repeated to herself in her heart.
“Yes,” Jiang Mi took a deep breath and suppressed the sob in her throat:
“Aren’t I just a meddler every day?”
Jiang Mi took a breath. “Don’t worry, I won’t anymore.”
The moment her words fell, Jiang Mi no longer hesitated. She turned and helped Mo Yun up, and walked straight out the door.
Her mask and wide-brimmed hat covered most of her face.
In the taxi, Mo Yun was still in shock, sobbing and trying to accuse again, but she was stopped by a gentle yet unquestionable gesture from Jiang Mi—she didn’t want any private words to fall into the ears of a strange driver.
Her fingertips tapped quickly on the phone screen. She contacted her manager, Zhao Jia, and briefly explained the situation.
After arriving at the hospital, she cautiously sent Mo Yun to the emergency entrance, not daring to go in with her directly.
Half an hour later.
The hospital room was filled with the smell of disinfectant, and the lights were pale.
Mo Yun was leaning on the pillow, her emotions seeming to have stabilized a little. But the moment she opened her mouth, the suppressed resentment crawled out like a vine—she once again brought up Yan Wei’s “atrocities.”
“She’s been like this since she was a child. She has a fierceness and madness in her bones… there used to be a little girl next door who was particularly clingy to her, chasing her around every day. And what happened? One day, she suddenly disappeared! She was later found in the school’s abandoned equipment room, so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Who knows what that child went through in there… she was so scared she dropped out of school! Mimi, believe me, anyone who gets involved with her will not have a good end! I’m her biological mother. I know better than anyone what kind of monster she is! Listen to Auntie’s advice, stay away from her, the farther the better!”
Jiang Mi listened quietly, her face showing no emotion, but in the depths of her clear eyes, something seemed to be slowly congealing. Her heart was a dull ache, and it was so soft and cold that it was almost suffocating her.
She looked at the hatred that was churning in Mo Yun’s eyes, almost becoming tangible. She had thought that the Mo Yun she knew was the Mo Yun she had first met, but it turned out that she was not.
Yan Wei was not either.
Jiang Mi’s faint voice carried an unshakable calmness, “Auntie, I believe that there must be a deep misunderstanding between you and Teacher Yan. She is not the kind of person you say she is. At least not in my heart.” She paused, her tone firm, “If what you said really happened… then, the person who provoked her must also be at fault.”
**
At two in the morning, the city was not really asleep.
Jiang Mi was sitting in the car back to the hotel. The neon lights outside the window were flying backwards, and the colorful colors were reflected in her tired eyes, but they couldn’t stir up a single ripple.
Zhao Jia carefully broke the silence, “Surui’s side just replied. They said Teacher Yan… is fine, and her wound has been treated.”
Jiang Mi nodded, her gaze still glued to the flowing night scene outside the window. She didn’t respond, as if all her strength had been drained in the silent confrontation at the hospital.
She didn’t know what she was thinking, but she seemed to be really tired.
Her high heels stepped on the cold marble floor. Her heel slipped, and Jiang Mi’s body suddenly staggered. Zhao Jia quickly grabbed her arm, “Be careful!”
After steadying herself, Jiang Mi stood still for a moment.
The night wind blew through her slightly messy hair, and it also seemed to blow away some long-standing fog.
She slowly looked up, and the fatigue in her eyes was replaced by an almost-cold clarity.
There were too many things she didn’t know, and too many things between her and Yan Wei.
So many that they couldn’t be resolved in a short time, so many that even if she asked, she couldn’t trace the root.
Unless one day, Yan Wei herself spoke.
Unless one day, Yan Wei herself took the initiative.
“In the future,” her voice was very light, with a certain determination, “there’s no need to contact Surui’s side anymore.”
Zhao Jia was stunned. “…What? You and Teacher Yan are…”
“Literally.”
Jiang Mi’s lips twitched. “I’m not going to be a meddler anymore.”
