Lin Zixi sat on the bed, staring at the fake smile that had appeared on Ye Can’s face. She took a deep breath. She was grateful to be twenty-nine now, having seen all sorts of people—she could tell if they were putting on an act or just sharp-tongued but soft-hearted.
If she were nineteen, still insightful yet naive about the world, she absolutely would have been so pissed off by Ye Can that she’d never like anyone again for the rest of her life.
Anyone, after spending such a wonderful night together, would burst into flames of anger upon hearing such indifferent, heartless words.
Lin Zixi held back again and again, but in the end, she couldn’t hold back. She grabbed a pillow from the side and hurled it at Ye Can. Ye Can didn’t dodge. She straightened her body and took the hit head-on. Lin Zixi shot her a glance, picked up the other pillow, and smashed it over too.
Ye Can still didn’t dodge, letting the pillow smack her in the face and mess up her neatly combed bangs. She didn’t dare look at Lin Zixi, her gaze wandering aimlessly around the room.
Why didn’t I bite her a few more times last night? Lin Zixi thought, watching her like this. It would have saved her from pissing me off today with this clueless attitude.
But emotions are the devil—you can be angry, but you have to find a way out amid the anger. Not let them control you, doing something irreversible or saying something hurtful.
Lin Zixi knew this all too well. She stared at Ye Can for a long moment before speaking. “Why didn’t you dodge?”
Ye Can’s eyes darted evasively, and she admitted guiltily, “I didn’t dare.” Honestly, she was afraid of making Lin Zixi mad too.
Lin Zixi let out a soft sigh and beckoned her over. “Come here.”
Ye Can didn’t hesitate and walked straight to the bedside. Lin Zixi reached out and pulled her waist into an embrace. The blanket draped over Ye Can’s back slipped off, and Ye Can quickly grabbed it with sharp eyes and swift hands, wrapping Lin Zixi back up.
Held in Ye Can’s arms, her face pressed against Ye Can’s abdomen, Lin Zixi felt a pang in her heart. She thought for a moment and said to Ye Can, “What you said earlier… I can consider it.
“But Ye Can, you need to understand one thing: liking someone isn’t about rejecting them under the banner of ‘it’s for your own good.’ It’s about finding a path to happiness together. Even if the process isn’t perfect, it’s a choice both of us make.
“So, you can’t make decisions for me unilaterally. Deciding on your own what’s ‘good for me’ and making unnecessary choices like that.”
Lin Zixi had read many stories, real and fictional. She’d written many too—unrealistic ones that reflected life.
Love could be something noble and profound, or utterly worthless. It all depended on one’s values.
People sometimes overhype the meaning of love, and other times underrate it. It seems to come so easily, with no harsh conditions, yet it ends up in so many epic tales.
Lin Zixi didn’t know how her own love story would end—whether the passion would fade into a dismal close over the years, or deepen into something enviable. But right now, that didn’t seem to matter.
Fate like this doesn’t come easily. Finding someone you like is actually pretty damn hard.
With things as they were, Lin Zixi decided to make one more effort. She tilted her head up, looking at Ye Can’s calm expression. “Ye Can, let’s be together.”
Her confession boiled down to three words: “I’ll take care of you.”
Ye Can lowered her gaze, staring at her in a daze for a long moment before saying, “Life is like a dream, illusory—all bubbles and drifting clouds. There’s always a day when they’re burst.
“Pleasure is fleeting, but pain lingers long. Even so, are you willing?”
Lin Zixi looked into her clear, bright eyes and nodded.
Ye Can pondered for a moment, then asked one more thing. “If I die, you won’t follow me in death, right?”
Lin Zixi laughed in exasperation. “Do you see me as someone who loves you to the point of life and death? That I’d commit suicide if you died?”
She raised her hand and thumped Ye Can. “You’re overthinking it. Without you, I’d still live well.” Just… maybe not very happily, for now.
Ye Can let out a breath of relief. She dropped the facade, smiling as she said, “Good, that’s good.” She lowered her eyes, cradled the back of Lin Zixi’s head, and looked at her with sparkling eyes. “If that’s the case, I’ll stay with you.
“Until the very last second I leave this world, my eyes will reflect only you.”
It had been so long since Lin Zixi last heard such sweet words from Ye Can. She looked at her and sighed. “Next time I write a love story, I should use you as the template.” The kind that people love to hate.
Ye Can’s eyes widened. “I’m not a good person. If you write me in, everyone will hate it.”
At least she has some self-awareness. Lin Zixi huffed, relaxing her body as she sprawled across Ye Can’s abdomen. She lazily hugged Ye Can for a while, then suddenly remembered Ye Can’s skillfulness from last night. She coughed lightly and asked, “You… have you been with a lot of people before?”
Lin Zixi figured someone from Ye Can’s background, young as she was, probably played around wildly. Even with her past mental issues, her looks and smarts were top-notch, and her sweet talk could overwhelm anyone. The more Lin Zixi thought, the more she suspected Ye Can’s underage experiences had been colorful.
Linking it to how smoothly Ye Shen had given her money before, she even wondered if this was how Ye Can always brushed off her exes.
Five million? The Ye Family really was loaded.
Ye Can didn’t catch on. “What? What are you talking about?”
Lin Zixi tilted her head up and smiled at her. “I mean, have you done a lot of what we did last night with other people?”
Last night? Ye Can shook her head. “No, it’s always been just you.”
Lin Zixi shamefully realized she was a little happy. She let go of Ye Can, wrapped herself in the blanket, and sat up on the bed. She said softly, “Why do I feel like you’re just sweet-talking me?”
Ye Can smiled. “I’m telling the truth.” Then, as if remembering something, she slapped her forehead. “Oh no, big trouble!”
Lin Zixi’s heart skipped a beat, thinking she was about to spill the real story. She looked up. “What?”
But Ye Can turned, grabbed her phone from the desk, and chattered on. “I need to delete Meng Zhiqiu! She’s been prying about you lately. I was keeping her as a backup plan for you, so I hadn’t cut her off.
Ye Can laughed twice. “Now I can ignore her for good.”
Lin Zixi rubbed her forehead, torn between laughter and tears. “Ye Can, you’re way too wicked.” Meng Zhiqiu had helped her so much, and here Ye Can was, deleting her without a second thought—ruthless.
Lin Zixi rubbed her forehead again. “Don’t delete her. She’s still your friend, at least.”
No sooner had she said it than Ye Can turned back, phone in hand, grinning cheekily. “Already deleted!”
Her tone made it sound like she’d done something gloriously evil. Lin Zixi felt a massive headache coming on. With Ye Can’s shitty personality, breaking into entertainment would mean shelling out cash daily to pull press releases.
Good thing her family had money. Good thing this was a society ruled by law. Otherwise, Lin Zixi wouldn’t know how to handle Ye Can’s messes.
Refreshed after doing the bad thing she’d wanted to do, Ye Can sauntered to the bedside and leaned down, beaming at Lin Zixi. “Hungry? Want me to help you get dressed?”
Lin Zixi glanced at her and nodded lightly. Ye Can hurriedly helped her into her pajamas. As she dressed, Lin Zixi asked, “Why aren’t you going to the set today? Were you waiting for me to wake up?”
Ye Can shook her head. “Nah, didn’t I say yesterday that I’d finished all my extra roles? No more extras for me.”
Lin Zixi teased, “Didn’t you used to say you loved doing extras?”
Ye Can mumbled evasively. “That was having to like it.”
Lin Zixi reached up, pulling her long hair free from under her clothes. She looked up at Ye Can. “Since you’re free now, let’s go home today.”
Ye Can blinked in confusion. “Home? You’re not working?”
Lin Zixi said irritably, “I’ve finished the script, wrapped up most of my work, and New Year’s coming up—what else am I staying for?” She’d originally planned to head home after wrapping Calamity Nation, but Ye Can had been diligently doing extras, so she’d stuck around out of worry.
Ye Can went, “Oh,” and agreed readily. “Alright, home it is.”
Lin Zixi’s home was in Hongwei Huating in Songjiang District—a bit further was the Pine View Villa where Ye Can used to stay. So that night when Lin Zixi had driven her back, it had been perfectly on the way.
After lunch, they packed their bags and drove home. Since they no longer needed the set, Lin Zixi messaged Tong Lin, letting her know they wouldn’t need pickups anymore—they were heading home together.
New Year’s was near; even wage slaves needed holidays.
Tong Lin saw the message and immediately called Ye Shen. Ye Shen said nothing, just gave Tong Lin the day off.
Around four in the afternoon, Lin Zixi brought Ye Can home.
Ye Can lugged the bags, following Lin Zixi inside. After setting things down, she started curiously poking around.
It was a spacious two-bedroom, two-living-room apartment. The living room had built-in bookshelves lining two walls, packed with books—the whole place radiated an intense intellectual vibe.
Ye Can wandered the living room, hands clasped behind her back, and came to a closed door. She slowly pushed it open. A pitch-black room appeared. Curious, she asked, “What’s this for?”
Lin Zixi, sorting stuff on the sofa, glanced up. “Media room. Mostly for movies. I’ve got a bunch of Blu-rays collected—we can watch together sometime.”
Ye Can went, “Oh,” and pushed open the next door.
That was the apartment’s only bedroom. Sunset’s glow filtered through the slightly parted curtains, spilling light onto the light gray bedding. Ye Can leaned in the doorway, gazing at the bed, feeling an inexplicable warmth.
She turned and crooked a finger at Lin Zixi. “Come here a sec.”
Lin Zixi, puzzled, asked, “What’s up?”
Ye Can grinned. “Just come over.”
Lin Zixi walked over, exasperated. “What is it?”
As she got close, Ye Can pulled her into her arms. Wrapping around Lin Zixi’s waist, she looked down with a smile. “Just feels like your bed must be really comfy.”
As it turned out, it was really comfy—comfy enough that Lin Zixi felt like her waist might snap.
