Chapter 1: Cohabitation. I’m already married to her.
When Cheng Yang woke up, the sky was nearly dark.
The glass window reflected her drowsy, hazy face. The space beside her was already empty, with only the smoothed-out white bedsheet remaining.
Cheng Yang padded barefoot across the carpet, steadying herself against the wall as she walked on weak legs to the door.
The moment she opened it, Cheng Yang saw the maid outside, wiping the staircase railing.
She asked in a hoarse voice, “Auntie Jiang, where’s A-Xun?”
Jiang Huimei came forward to support the slightly staggering Cheng Yang and replied, “Miss went to the Starlight Gala today. She told me not to wake you and to let you sleep in.”
Cheng Yang looked at the gradually darkening sky, the corners of her lips unconsciously curving into a slight smile. She asked again, “When did she leave?”
Jiang Huimei helped Cheng Yang sit on the sofa and said, “She left just as it was getting light.”
Cheng Yang hummed in acknowledgment and turned on the large LCD television across from her, skillfully navigating to the movie channel.
Immediately, a gentle and beautiful face appeared on the big screen.
The female Omega being interviewed by the host was named Xu Xun, Cheng Yang’s wife of a very short time.
A secret marriage was still a marriage.
Although Cheng Yang couldn’t remember anything, she knew that with Xu Xun’s career on a meteoric rise, choosing to marry in secret was the best option.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her scalp.
Cheng Yang’s brow furrowed tightly, and she sucked in a sharp breath.
Seeing this, Jiang Huimei called for the private doctor to come over.
She stood behind Cheng Yang, at a loss, not daring to make any sudden moves as she watched her break out in a cold sweat.
By the time Jian Fan arrived, Cheng Yang was curled up on the sofa with her eyes closed.
The Alpha’s cheeks and lips were ashen, her lower lip bitten with a dense pattern of teeth marks, and fine beads of sweat dotted her temples.
After an injection of a sedative and painkiller, Cheng Yang’s heavy breathing gradually calmed.
She slowly opened her eyes and looked at the Beta before her, saying weakly, “Why is it you? I thought A-Xun was back.”
Jian Fan glanced at the big screen, where Xu Xun was holding up a trophy and shaking hands with the host, and sighed helplessly. “There she is, on the TV.”
Cheng Yang’s eyes opened a little wider. She smiled and said, “If only I had the power to travel through time and space, I could jump into the TV and accept the award with her.”
Seeing Cheng Yang staring intently at the radiant Xu Xun on the screen, Jiang Huimei sighed inwardly.
She hesitated, wanting to speak but stopping herself. She met Jian Fan’s gaze and shook her head, not knowing what to say.
A moment later, Cheng Yang suddenly spoke. “Auntie Jiang, I keep feeling like something is missing from that wall.”
Before Jiang Huimei could ask, Cheng Yang said, “Why isn’t our wedding photo there?”
Jian Fan and Jiang Huimei looked at each other in dismay.
Her mind raced. While sending a message to Xu Xun, who was thousands of miles away, she found a moment to explain, “It was probably put away. You can just ask her when she gets back.”
·
At the same time, at a boarding gate thousands of miles away, Xu Xun received the message from Jian Fan.
Xu Xun looked at the message, her brow slightly furrowed.
She pinched the bridge of her nose and made a call to her assistant.
It was nearly midnight when Xu Xun’s car finally returned to the villa.
She had been tossed about on the plane for several hours, and the moment her high-heeled foot touched the ground, her heart began to pound violently.
The villa was ablaze with lights. Xu Xun frowned involuntarily, her pace quickening so much that even she didn’t notice.
The instant the main door opened, the smell of something burning assaulted her nostrils.
Jiang Huimei was pacing anxiously at the entrance to the open-plan kitchen. Seeing Xu Xun was like seeing her savior. “Miss, you’re finally back! Madam insisted on cooking you a late-night snack herself, and I didn’t dare go up…”
Before she could finish, Xu Xun rushed into the kitchen, only to see Cheng Yang holding a steak pan that was emitting black smoke.
The handle of the pan was hot and had burned Cheng Yang’s hand slightly. She was about to throw out the charred steak along with the ruined pan when she turned her head and met Xu Xun’s frantic gaze.
For a moment, she didn’t know how to react.
Xu Xun took the handle, set the scorched pan aside, and then took Cheng Yang’s wrist, carefully examining her hands.
Having just been burned by the handle, the fingers on Cheng Yang’s left hand were slightly red.
It didn’t hurt at all, really. She had wanted to comfort Xu Xun, but just as her lips parted, Xu Xun slowly raised her head.
Cheng Yang met Xu Xun’s bloodshot eyes, and a tempestuous storm raged uncontrollably within her heart.
She couldn’t understand why Xu Xun would have such an intense reaction to such a minor burn.
Cheng Yang was frightened by Xu Xun’s expression.
At that moment, she felt like prey being stared down by a wild beast, unable to speak or make any other move.
The two remained frozen like that for more than ten seconds.
Cheng Yang then noticed Xu Xun’s expression abruptly change again, as if the Omega who had looked ready to devour her whole had never existed.
Xu Xun’s vocal cords rasped, and when she spoke, her voice was hoarse and trembling.
Even though she spoke slowly, Cheng Yang could still hear that something was not right.
Xu Xun asked, “It’s almost morning, why aren’t you asleep?”
Cheng Yang stared at the blackened steak pan like a child who had done something wrong.
She explained in a small voice, “Dr. Jian told me you’d be back at one. I couldn’t sleep, and I was worried you were too busy with social events to eat properly, so…”
The words Xu Xun was about to say caught in her throat. She moved her lips, her face etched with exhaustion. Even her exquisite makeup couldn’t hide her weariness.
Through the layer of foundation, Cheng Yang could even see how deathly pale her cheeks were.
While Jiang Huimei was busy cleaning the kitchen and not paying attention, Cheng Yang quickly pressed a kiss to Xu Xun’s red lips, then took her hand and said in a soft voice, “A-Xun, I was wrong.”
The two soft, pale-pink lips touched and retreated as quickly as a dragonfly skimming water. Cheng Yang caught the faint scent of alcohol.
She knew Xu Xun had been drinking again.
Xu Xun’s body grew increasingly stiff, her pupils suddenly dilating.
Faced with Cheng Yang’s unsolicited kiss, she didn’t even know where to put her hands.
Cheng Yang thought Xu Xun was still sulking, so she moved even closer, wrapping her arms around Xu Xun’s waist. She lowered her body and looked up, staring at her face with an innocent expression.
Xu Xun didn’t speak. After Cheng Yang drew near, she touched the tip of her nose to Xu Xun’s and rubbed it affectionately.
“A-Xun, are you too tired? Why don’t we go take a bath and sleep?”
“Okay…”
Xu Xun nodded mechanically, like a string puppet. She lowered her gaze.
Upon meeting Cheng Yang’s moist, beautiful eyes, muscle memory made her avert her gaze.
This reaction displeased Cheng Yang.
She was not happy. She had been so forward, and they were already married, yet Xu Xun’s reactions to her were sometimes very strange, not at all like the affectionate behavior of a normal couple.
Cheng Yang suppressed the questions in her heart, figuring that since Xu Xun had left for work at the crack of dawn and had a long, tiring day, it was normal for her not to want to be intimate when she got home.
Sighing inwardly several times, Cheng Yang pulled away from Xu Xun’s body, putting half a meter of distance between them.
She looked up into the other woman’s eyes. “I know you’re in a crucial period of your career and you’re incredibly busy. Don’t worry, I’ll support you in whatever you do.”
·
In the bedroom, Cheng Yang was lying on her stomach, unable to sleep on her back.
During the car accident, she had suffered a severe blow to the back of her head. It seemed she was blessed by the heavens, as apart from her head, she only had a few scrapes on her body.
Cheng Yang couldn’t remember anything that had happened before the accident.
Whenever she tried to retrieve her lost memories, the slightest mental effort would cause a piercing pain, as if her entire head was being stabbed with needles.
Cheng Yang lay on the bed thinking for a while, but her mind was a blank slate, and racking her brains only brought pain.
So she simply gave up.
I won’t think about it anymore.
If you fall somewhere, just lie down and take a nap right there.
·
Half an hour later, Xu Xun walked out of the bathroom wrapped in a bath towel. She turned her head and saw Cheng Yang lying on her stomach on the bed, also watching her.
Cheng Yang cupped her face in her hands and smiled, eagerly inviting Xu Xun to bed.
The movement was a bit too large, and as Cheng Yang sat up, she pulled at a scrape on her leg. She hissed in pain but acted as if nothing had happened when Xu Xun looked over.
The moment Xu Xun sat on the bed, Cheng Yang scooted closer.
She hugged the fragrant, soft, freshly showered Omega from behind and sniffed at the nape of her neck.
Xu Xun’s pheromones were Night-blooming Cereus, a faint, sweet, and delicate fragrance that could only be smelled up close.
The shower gel at home was peach-scented, which happened to be the same as Cheng Yang’s pheromones.
Although she hadn’t been marked recently, Cheng Yang was extremely satisfied as she held Xu Xun from behind, inhaling the scent of Night-blooming Cereus covered by the peach fragrance.
Due to the accident a few days ago, Cheng Yang had some major and minor physical issues and was unable to mark her Omega. She could only nuzzle against her from behind.
The ends of Xu Xun’s hair were still damp. With her back to Cheng Yang, her posture seemed normal enough.
But when Cheng Yang rested her head on Xu Xun’s shoulder and turned to look at her cheek, she couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle. “A-Xun, your face is so red. Are you shy?”
Xu Xun bit her lower lip and said in a hushed voice, “No.”
Cheng Yang feigned a helpless sigh. “Ah, it’s no wonder you don’t want to be close to me. All the hair on the back of my head is shaved off. It’s not very attractive.”
Xu Xun quickly explained, “I don’t! I just… I just…”
Cheng Yang said, sounding aggrieved, “Just what? You just think I’m ugly now. I could cry from how ugly my hair makes me look every time I see myself in the mirror. If I had been disfigured in the accident, if my pretty face was gone, would you divorce me…?”
“…”
Warm breaths brushed against the back of Xu Xun’s neck, and her originally snow-white skin slowly took on a pale pink hue.
Cheng Yang didn’t see it. She just kept nuzzling, completely unaware that the Omega’s body she held in her arms was already having some unusual reactions.
Perhaps due to years of celibacy, Cheng Yang didn’t think much of it, but Xu Xun…
Cheng Yang noticed that Xu Xun hadn’t taken the bait of her “seduction tactic” and listlessly released her hold. She turned away, hugged her legs, and rested her chin on her knees, looking like a fluffy white cat that had been wronged, curled up into a ball.
Seeing this, Xu Xun got onto the bed. But as soon as she sat down next to Cheng Yang, she was startled by a sudden embrace.
Cheng Yang’s voice was hoarse and nasal as she tearfully accused, “Didn’t you say our pheromone compatibility is one hundred percent? But why do I feel like you don’t like me at all? You don’t even respond when I kiss you. Has your love for me faded during our marriage? Are you tired of me?”
Xu Xun hugged Cheng Yang, who was “sobbing” softly on her shoulder, and said gently, “I have never been tired of you, nor have I ever thought of divorcing you. I’m only afraid… only afraid you won’t want me.”
Hearing these words, Cheng Yang’s brain froze for a moment. She moved her lips, not knowing what to say.
Perhaps the accident had affected her language skills. Cheng Yang bit her lower lip and finally let out a cold huff. “That’s more like it. You can’t divorce me, or else I’ll hang myself from the headboard the next day… mmmph.”
“Don’t say such things!”
A hand covered her mouth.
Cheng Yang met Xu Xun’s reproachful gaze and kissed her palm twice. Just as she was about to take her fingertips into her mouth, Xu Xun snatched her hand back.
Xu Xun’s palm tingled, and the sensation spread through her entire body. She swallowed twice, and when she turned her head, she met Cheng Yang’s triumphant gaze.
“…”
Cheng Yang was about to pounce on the Omega and kiss her fiercely.
Just as she was rubbing her hands together, ready to do something “naughty,” she noticed the fatigue in Xu Xun’s eyes had vanished, replaced by a strange, glittering light.
Her poised-to-strike motion halted. Cheng Yang heard Xu Xun say, “Yangyang, you just said I can’t divorce you, right?”
Cheng Yang nodded blankly.
Xu Xun smiled sweetly, then her expression turned somber as she said nonchalantly, “Good, I’ll remember that. Then if one day in the future, you’re the one who brings up divorce…”
Cheng Yang grew anxious. Though she didn’t know what Xu Xun meant by that, she blurted out, “That day will never come!”
Their eyes met.
Xu Xun took Cheng Yang’s wrist, her fingertips stroking the other’s slender fingers, brushing against a recently scabbed-over scrape on her skin.
Xu Xun lowered her head and pressed a kiss to the scar on Cheng Yang’s knuckle. “You said it yourself. No take-backs.”
A tingling, numbing sensation shot from her finger through her entire body in an instant. Cheng Yang’s scalp tingled, and her mind raced with desire as she shook her head. “No take-backs.”
A few days ago, every breath Cheng Yang took made her head hurt. Now that her body was much better and her wounds were slowly healing, she had forgotten the pain before the scars had even faded.
Her teeth itched, and her heart itched too. She wanted to mark this gentle and considerate Omega before her.
But…
But there was a nagging awkwardness in Cheng Yang’s heart that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She hadn’t yet figured out how to handle their relationship.
The first person she saw when she woke up in the hospital was Xu Xun.
Xu Xun’s eyes were red from crying. She told Cheng Yang that she had amnesia and that they had secretly married not long ago. Unexpectedly, just a few days after their wedding, she had gotten into a car accident.
Recalling Xu Xun’s panicked state at the time, Cheng Yang subconsciously looked at the Omega before her.
Xu Xun’s bright eyes were fixed unwaveringly on Cheng Yang. She asked in a raspy voice, “Yangyang, does your head still hurt?”
Cheng Yang slowly shook her head and lied, “It doesn’t hurt anymore. And I’m in great shape now. Do you think our relationship could be…”
Hearing Cheng Yang’s hesitant words, Xu Xun asked, “What?”
Cheng Yang’s beautiful eyes darted slightly, and she said with a smile, “Nothing. By the way, Auntie Jiang said you put our wedding photo away. Can I see it?”
Xu Xun exhaled slowly, then placed a light kiss on Cheng Yang’s forehead, her voice carrying an imperceptible tremor.
Her eyes curved into crescents as she said gently, “The wedding photo… of course you can. But it fell off the wall and broke a few days ago. I had someone take it to be repaired. It should be restored by the day after tomorrow.”
Hmm, well it seems like an interesting start?
