Chapter 19: Getting into Character
Jiang Mi waved goodbye to Shen Ruoxi with regret. This was the tenth day she had been cutting back on carbs, and her breath was starting to smell like bran. Eating cake was an extravagant affair, and she had really wanted to have a taste.
But now, she could only follow Yan Wei with her script.
She couldn’t refuse.
The moment she stepped into the residential building, the fine hairs on the back of Jiang Mi’s neck stood on end. It was as if she could see the moss in the deep corners, and a cool, damp chill was seeping through the soles of her shoes. She felt the urge to strike up a conversation and ask Yan Wei if she was cold. But she didn’t.
At the door, Jiang Mi asked first, “Are we starting from when we enter?”
“No need.”
After Yan Wei spoke, she walked straight into “Liang Yongping’s” home.
“Reluctant?”
Jiang Mi was taken aback. “What?”
She looked up to see Yan Wei staring at her with an extremely faint gaze. “Should I call her back?”
Jiang Mi immediately realized that Yan Wei had already started running lines.
She glanced at the script, took a deep breath, and hurriedly picked up where she left off.
By the time they had run their lines up to the bathroom scene, it was basically time to start filming. Outside, the various departments were getting ready one after another. Jiang Qu’s voice came from outside the door, “How is it? Any problems?”
Jiang Mi looked at Yan Wei. The important thing today wasn’t the lines, but the physical interaction between the two of them. Although they had just walked through the blocking, and she had simulated it hundreds of times in her head while memorizing the lines, facing Yan Wei, she was still afraid of making a mistake.
“Let’s try,” Yan Wei said.
This was exactly Jiang Qu’s style.
—Try.
Jiang Qu didn’t like rigidity. She liked authentic beauty.
She had absolute confidence in her own judgment. For example, with Yan Wei and Jiang Mi standing there at this moment, in her eyes, the scene had already begun.
**
Qin Shui had arrived.
Like a hunter watching its prey, or a drenched dog looking at its master, it was a complex and indistinguishable gaze. She just looked at Liang Yongping, who was still wearing the white dress her fiancée had bought her. It looked so soft.
Why wasn’t Liang Yongping hers?
“Do it with me once, and I’ll never bother you again.”
Qin Shui didn’t approach her, but simply sat down on the worn-out sofa. “I’ll keep my word this time. Liang Yongping, do it once, and I’ll leave you, and we’ll never see each other again.”
Liang Yongping’s heart ached uncontrollably.
Then came an unmanageable anger.
Later, she understood that one always had to pay the price for their wrong choices in life.
She walked towards Qin Shui with a blank expression. “Have sex once, and that’s it?”
Having been humiliated, she had to strike back.
“If you’re willing, twice is also fine.” Qin Shui smiled sarcastically, as usual.
Liang Yongping’s rosy lips were pressed tightly together. She was angry, Qin Shui knew it very well, yet she fearlessly lifted her leg, the pointed toe of her high heel rubbing back and forth on the hem of Liang Yongping’s white dress.
Qin Shui was wearing a cheongsam, and her snow-white, straight legs crashed into Liang Yongping’s vision.
Liang Yongping grabbed Qin Shui’s ankle. The icy touch made Qin Shui tremble, a shiver running straight to her core.
“You…”
Before she could finish, footsteps suddenly sounded outside the door. The lock turned in a matter of seconds!
When Bai Xiao opened the door, she was met with the sight of Liang Yongping, all in white, standing at the bathroom door, clutching the white dress to her chest, the shadow of her underwear strap visible on her shoulder. Her gaze swept over those fair, bare legs, and then a dark look filled her eyes.
Liang Yongping was clearly startled. “Why are you back?”
“I forgot my workbook.” Bai Xiao slowly took a step. “Taking a shower?”
“Yeah, I was sweaty.”
“Yongping, you’re too resistant to me. This is not good.” Bai Xiao smiled, and before she knew it, she was standing in front of Liang Yongping. She took a breath. “Yongping, after the New Year, we’re getting married. Your refusal is actually meaningless.”
Bai Xiao raised her hand, wanting to caress Liang Yongping’s smooth shoulder. Liang Yongping instinctively took a step back, her hand on the doorknob, and said timidly, “You should get to work. I’m going to take a shower.”
Bai Xiao narrowed her eyes, but she glanced at her watch and quickly said, “I should go. Can I kiss you?”
Suddenly, a soft thud came from the bathroom.
Liang Yongping’s scalp tingled, her palms sweating. She really thought Qin Shui was a lunatic!
Bai Xiao frowned. “What was that sound?”
The moment she finished speaking, Liang Yongping had already kissed her on the cheek.
Bai Xiao was very surprised and pleased. She wanted to do something more with Liang Yongping at this moment, by any means necessary, but unfortunately, she really didn’t have time.
**
“Cut—let’s stop for a moment.”
The moment Jiang Qu finished speaking, Zhao Jia immediately wrapped a blanket around Jiang Mi and rubbed her shoulders for her. Although it was summer in the drama, Huai City, which had just entered spring, was still cold, especially in this damp and chilly place.
Yan Wei took the hot water Bai Qiu handed her. The two well-proportioned legs under the blanket in front of her swayed in her vision, making one’s heart itch.
She took a sip of water, her nails scratching against the warm, smooth cup, again and again.
Jiang Mi’s legs were trembling from the cold. She sucked in a breath of cold air and listened attentively as Jiang Qu said, “Everything else is fine, the emotions are all very good, but it’s lacking a bit of visual beauty. The shoulder strap is a bit too stiff, it doesn’t look good. Stylist, loosen it a bit. The dress she’s holding, lower it. Right, don’t show the color of the slip underneath. We want a sense of exposed skin, but not eroticism. Show a little bit of the waistline. Okay, that’s about it. Let’s shoot it again.”
The blanket was taken away, and the props team sprayed fine droplets of water on Jiang Mi’s face and body.
**
Liang Yongping, clutching the dress, quickly hid herself in the bathroom as well. She locked the door, her back, covered in a mix of cold and hot sweat, pressed against the bathroom door. Qin Shui had turned on the shower. In the rising steam, that beautiful face was extremely cold, as if it wanted to nail her to the door.
There was no sound of the front door closing yet. Bai Xiao was still in the living room.
Liang Yongping didn’t dare to speak. She shook her head, gesturing, warning Qin Shui not to say or do anything.
Qin Shui walked forward, her thumb rubbing hard against Liang Yongping’s lips, as if trying to wipe away some trace. Liang Yongping didn’t know how Qin Shui knew what she had done inside, but at this moment, an inappropriate sense of guilt arose in her, and she also felt angry and resentful about the situation.
She turned her face away and pushed Qin Shui hard.
Enough!
With a “bang—”, Qin Shui crashed into the shower rack.
Qin Shui sat on the floor for a few seconds without looking up, but Liang Yongping’s eyes suddenly turned red. What was she doing? What on earth was she doing?!
Liang Yongping covered her face. The emotions that had been suppressed for so long collapsed at this moment like an avalanche. After a long time, she lowered her hands and looked at Qin Shui on the floor. She closed her eyes, unable to bear it. After countless struggles, she walked through the steam, knelt down under the shower, and hugged the soaking wet Qin Shui.
In the pervading steam and water, she cupped Qin Shui’s face, their foreheads touching.
“I’m sorry.”
She didn’t know why it had become like this.
Qin Shui looked at her. “I won’t force you anymore.”
Liang Yongping was crying, but how was Qin Shui at fault for how things had turned out? It was clearly she who had fallen first.
She looked at the woman before her, earnestly and carefully, her heart aching as if it were being rolled over a needlepoint. The steam blurred her eyes. Finally, she closed her eyes and moved closer to Qin Shui.
In front of the monitor.
“Director, I don’t think this is in the script?”
Jiang Qu was smoking, raising a hand to silence the speaker, but her eyes were filled with surprise and excitement.
The water had completely soaked them. Liang Yongping’s white slip and shorts almost merged with her skin. The dark green of Qin Shui’s cheongsam was like a life blooming from a desperate corner, swaying in the water.
Water and flesh, decay and life, were originally the most beautiful, purest, and most primitive things.
In the bathroom, Liang Yongping cupped Qin Shui’s face, her eyes filled with love, heartache, and restraint.
And determination.
She had been pretending so well these days, but it seemed to have all crumbled in this instant.
She tearfully kissed Qin Shui’s forehead. The overhead light suddenly buzzed with electricity. They shivered in their soaked state. Then, her nose, and she looked at Qin Shui’s lips.
One last time, just indulge this one last time.
She lowered her head, but in the end, she restrained herself and stopped at the corner of Qin Shui’s lips.
“Cut! Good! Very good!”
Jiang Mi didn’t hear Jiang Qu’s voice. Her emotions hadn’t settled yet. She unconsciously hugged Yan Wei tightly and panted a few times, until she heard a clear, cold voice in her ear, “Jiang Mi.”
She was suddenly reminded of what she was doing and quickly took a step back, apologizing to Yan Wei. Outside the bathroom, rustling sounds began. She habitually looked at Yan Wei’s eyes again.
Unfortunately, Yan Wei’s eyes were lowered, and she couldn’t see anything.
Jiang Mi hugged her arms and shivered. Because she was soaked, she curled up, not daring to move too much, afraid of accidentally exposing herself. She waited for her manager to take care of her. Bai Qiu had already entered and draped a blanket over Yan Wei. For some reason, she didn’t see Zhao Jia.
The next second, something heavy was placed in front of her.
Yan Wei, without a word, draped the blanket from her own body over her chest.
Bai Qiu was quick-witted and quickly turned to get another one.
Jiang Mi looked up and saw a drop of water trickle down Yan Wei’s slender neck and into her collar. The vine pattern on the cheongsam was being invaded by the water stains.
She hurriedly tried to return it to Yan Wei, but Bai Qiu was faster and had already handed over a new blanket.
She could only say thank you gratefully.
After leaving the bathroom, Jiang Mi and Yan Wei walked to the monitor together. Jiang Qu was very happy, saying that this was her most satisfactory take so far, and also Jiang Mi’s best one.
Jiang Mi explained, “As long as you don’t think I took matters into my own hands.”
She had been in character at that moment, feeling very sad and heartbroken, and hadn’t thought much about it. She secretly glanced at Yan Wei, only to be caught. She was taken aback, and the next second, Yan Wei looked away.
Jiang Qu shook her head. “I like it when actors improvise.”
After they finished talking, both Jiang Mi and Yan Wei had to go to the break room to change into dry clothes. Jiang Mi caught up with Yan Wei to apologize.
“Teacher Yan, just now… you don’t mind, do you?”
Yan Wei didn’t answer, but gestured for Bai Qiu to go on ahead.
Only then did she glance at Jiang Mi. She could tell that Jiang Mi had been avoiding her a bit these past two days. She didn’t know the reason, but it seemed reasonable.
But at this moment, looking at Jiang Mi’s blushing face in front of her, the irritability of the past two days seemed to suddenly weaken.
Yan Wei rubbed her fingertips together.
“Just now, what?”
Jiang Mi threw caution to the wind. “I was too into character. That kiss, do you mind?”
She needed to understand her scene partner’s feelings in order to get into character without distractions.
Yan Wei stopped and let out a cool, indifferent laugh.
It wasn’t until much later that Jiang Mi savored that smile. From that moment on, she should have understood that she didn’t understand Yan Wei at all, not one bit.
Yan Wei’s gaze slowly moved down from the young Alpha’s eyes, finally landing on her rosy lips. It was easy to recall—in the misty steam, under the warm shower water, these lips were very hot, very soft.
She said slowly, “Jiang Mi, that wasn’t a kiss.”
