Chapter 21: Ice Pack
The roasted aroma of coffee mixed with that hint of brandy pheromone swirled around Jiang Mi. Her gaze quickly landed on the ice pack in Bai Qiu’s hand, and she was slightly taken aback.
Then, she looked up at the owner of the room.
Yan Wei was sitting on a high stool with her back to the door. A gray cashmere shawl was loosely draped around her shoulders and neck. Below her shoulders, her waistline was astonishingly smooth.
Just as she was about to speak, she heard a cool voice, “Is something the matter?”
Jiang Mi’s gaze then fixed on the pearl on the other’s earlobe. “Is it serious? Was it because I pushed you?”
After asking, she didn’t forget to glance at Bai Qiu out of the corner of her eye. The latter’s subtle nod was perfectly reflected in the mirror—they seemed to have forgotten about the mirror behind them, which was large enough to contain every detail.
Yan Wei withdrew her gaze from the mirror and simply didn’t answer.
“Where? Your waist or your back? Is it serious?” Jiang Mi asked Bai Qiu with some urgency.
She had suddenly remembered that she hadn’t held back when she pushed Yan Wei during filming just now, so she had wanted to come and ask. She hadn’t expected it to be serious enough to require an ice pack.
Bai Qiu said, “Her waist.”
Actually, Bai Qiu hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, so she wasn’t sure about the extent of Yan Wei’s injury. She only knew the location because she had been applying the ice pack for Yan Wei.
Outside of acting, Yan Wei hated people getting close to her, let alone touching her body.
“I’m sorry, Teacher Yan. I didn’t control my strength at that moment.” Guilt welled up in Jiang Mi, and her brow furrowed slightly. “Does it hurt a lot?”
Yan Wei looked up and said slowly, “Why don’t you try?”
Jiang Mi: “Okay, then you can push me later.”
Yan Wei: “…”
Bai Qiu looked at Yan Wei in surprise. She was very surprised that Yan Wei was someone who would joke.
She was also surprised that although Jiang Mi seemed to be very careful every time she gave Yan Wei something or spoke to her, in reality, when she was in front of her, she wasn’t really afraid of Yan Wei, unlike her and Surui.
At this moment, remembering something, Bai Qiu said, “Teacher Yan, Surui said she sent something over. I’ll go out and get it. I’ll be right back.”
The lock clicked softly. The room instantly fell silent. Jiang Mi took a breath. The coffee aroma seemed to grow stronger in her nostrils.
She stood there for two seconds, looking at the ice pack Bai Qiu had placed on the table.
“Teacher Yan, why don’t I help you apply it for a while?”
**
“Here?”
The ice pack, wrapped in a towel, was tentatively placed on Yan Wei’s slender lower back.
Yan Wei said, “A little higher.”
Jiang Mi’s hand moved up accordingly. “Here?”
“Mmm.”
Yan Wei looked in the mirror. The high stool had been temporarily borrowed by Bai Qiu for the convenience of applying the ice pack. Jiang Mi was standing behind her, bent over, her head slightly lowered. She could feel the rise and fall of her breath behind her, and the milky scent began to spread from that moment on.
She continued to observe Jiang Mi calmly.
Her fair, delicate face was a little more flushed than when she had first entered. Because she was so focused, she blinked less frequently, and the shadow of her eyelashes lingered under her eyes for a long time.
“Is the pressure too much?”
“No.”
“If it hurts, just say so. I’ll be gentler.”
“Mmm.”
Yan Wei had to admit that Jiang Mi was indeed very patient. The ice pack didn’t stay in one place for long, but was gently rolled over her waist. Through the fabric and the thin towel, the coldness was greatly reduced. It was as if it wasn’t an ice pack moving on her waist.
She secretly took a deep breath and, as the ice pack moved, slowly sat up straight.
In Jiang Mi’s eyes, it was a movement that seemed to be both dodging and not dodging. She thought she had touched Yan Wei’s injury.
“Did I hurt you?”
Yan Wei lowered her eyes, her thoughts unreadable. “Mmm.”
Jiang Mi’s movements became even more careful. While reducing the pressure, she lowered her head to look at Yan Wei’s expression, and her breath was like a soft feather brushing against Yan Wei’s neck.
After this happened several times, Yan Wei, unable to bear it any longer, reminded her, “Focus.”
Jiang Mi thought she had been doing it quite seriously, but she still nodded. “Okay.”
It wasn’t until she inadvertently saw the goosebumps on Yan Wei’s fair neck that she paused, her face flushing as she moved slightly to the side.
Yan Wei sneered inwardly. What? Only now do you remember you’re an Alpha?
Yan Wei composed herself, bent down to pick up her coffee cup, just avoiding the ice pack in Jiang Mi’s hand, and said, “That’s enough. Let’s leave it at that.”
Jiang Mi held the ice pack. “Has the medic looked at it?”
Yan Wei said, “No need.”
Jiang Mi: “Then has Teacher Yan looked at it yourself?”
Hearing this, Yan Wei’s phoenix eyes looked over the coffee cup. Jiang Mi said, “I’m just afraid you won’t take it seriously. It wouldn’t be good if it’s serious.”
After she said it, she felt that her words were a bit inappropriate, highly suspicious of being nosy. After all, their relationship wasn’t that close.
“I was the one who pushed you, after all. If you still feel uncomfortable, you can tell me again. Don’t take it lightly.” Jiang Mi paused and said, “I’ll be responsible.”
Yan Wei let out a silent laugh, purely because of this person’s innocence.
With that laugh, Jiang Mi’s heart also “thumped.” Apart from when they were in character, she rarely saw this kind of smile on Yan Wei’s face.
She heard Yan Wei ask, “How do you plan to be responsible?”
Jiang Mi replied, “Anything, until you’re better.”
Yan Wei didn’t speak for a few seconds, as if she were contemplating her words. But she quickly figured it out, put down the cup, and the smile on her lips returned to its usual faintness. “Being a good person like this, I’m afraid you’ll easily be taken advantage of.”
“Then will Teacher Yan let me be taken advantage of?” Jiang Mi asked in return.
Yan Wei paused for a moment. Those eyes were like freshly washed black grapes, confidently waiting for her answer.
She narrowed her eyes and slowly asked, “Do you think you know me?”
It was just an inquiry, not an interrogation.
Jiang Mi shook her head and said with a smile, “But I don’t think you’ll let me be taken advantage of.”
Yan Wei: “Why?”
“Because you’re a good person.”
Yan Wei fell silent.
This wasn’t the first time someone had said she was a good person. In fact, many people had said she was good.
From the moment she won her first Movie Queen award, there were almost no bad people around her. People became more and more kind and tolerant. No matter what shocking things she did, they still thought she was good.
But in the eyes of these people, there was always greed, longing, and desire.
On the contrary, she couldn’t see any demands on Jiang Mi’s face, nor any perfunctory or fawning behavior. It was precisely because of this that she felt a little bit of irony, as well as some emotions that she couldn’t quite identify at the moment.
After a long silence,
“A pity,” Yan Wei said.
Jiang Mi’s cold hands grew slightly warm in the sudden silence, and then gradually cooled after those two words. She didn’t think she had said anything wrong, but Yan Wei’s gradually indifferent expression told her that she had said something Yan Wei didn’t like.
A knock on the door shattered the peace.
Bai Qiu came in with two bags. Seeing that Jiang Mi was still there, she handed one of them to Jiang Mi, explaining that it was orange juice and a small snack she had gotten for her from the on-set support truck.
Jiang Mi looked at the logo on the brand bag. It was the same brand as the coffee Yan Wei was drinking.
Bai Qiu said in a low voice, “Teacher Yan’s support truck, everyone says it’s very good. I specially got you your favorite orange juice.”
Jiang Mi was suddenly reminded of that top-tier Alpha with an extraordinary aura.
Her name seemed to be Tan Zhaoxin.
“Thank you, you’re so nice.”
Jiang Mi smiled and thanked Bai Qiu, taking the paper bag. But she didn’t notice that after she said this, Yan Wei’s expression had completely cooled.
After saying goodbye to the two people in the room, Jiang Mi hesitated for two steps, then turned back and asked politely, “Teacher Yan, I have a friend who is your fan. Could I trouble you for an autograph?”
Yan Wei didn’t look up and was silent for two seconds. “You can.”
It just so happened that Bai Qiu found a few promotional stills for Spring in the break room.
Yan Wei signed them quickly.
Jiang Mi pursed her lips. “…Can I have two?”
Yan Wei’s movement of capping the pen paused slightly. Jiang Mi explained, “I have another friend…”
This is the difference between them, Yan Wei thought.
Some people could grow up happily, surrounded by countless people, living a happy and carefree life every day. They would think that everyone in the world was a good person, and that they should naturally be a good person too, like a mobile sun with an impressive power output, trying to warm everyone.
And some—
The tip of the pen left a sharp stroke on the promotional photo, the final point piercing a locust flower.
“Jiang Mi,” she handed it to Jiang Mi, in the calmest tone:
“You don’t have to bring me anything anymore. I don’t need anything.”
