Chapter 42: Like a Dream
The faint light from outside passed through the gap in the curtains, but it wasn’t enough to illuminate the room. The room was submerged in a grayish-blue dimness.
Jiang Mi was lying on her side on the blanket-covered floor, her back to the sofa. The words of refusal from the bathroom still hung in the air, “No, you need to rest.”
A rustling sound of fabric came from the sofa.
Yan Wei turned over, and a shadow was cast on Jiang Mi’s tense back.
She asked, “You’re really not going to bite?”
Her voice was emotionless, like a feather landing on water, faint and light.
Silence spread between the two of them. Jiang Mi could hear her own heartbeat pounding against her eardrums, counting the long blankness, second by second. After who knows how long, Yan Wei suddenly let out a very low laugh.
It was hard to tell what emotion it held.
“Jiang Mi, there won’t be a next time.”
Hearing this and the sound, Jiang Mi pursed her lips.
What’s the meaning of that laugh?
The darkness blurred their outlines but amplified the trajectory of their breathing.
Jiang Mi finally unclenched her fingers. “Then… can I have a different reward?”
“Let’s hear it.”
The figure on the sofa moved slightly.
Jiang Mi stared at the ceiling, her words repeatedly ground between her teeth, “Why don’t you like to sleep in the room? The first time I saw you, you seemed to be… sleeping in the study.”
The end of her words dissipated into the silence, like a grain of sand thrown into the deep sea, with no echo for a long time.
So long that she thought the other person had already fallen asleep.
Yan Wei finally spoke, “Go to sleep.”
Jiang Mi was silent for a moment, then closed her eyes. Disappointment spread from the tip of her heart, then into her throat, and her breath. Even her breathing was a little stuffy.
She turned over again, pulling the fleece blanket up to her chin, wrapping herself into an impenetrable fortress.
A faint rustling of fabric came from behind her. She knew Yan Wei was looking at her. That gaze was as if tangible, branding her shoulder blades, so hot that her heart felt sore and numb.
But she also seemed to be a little tired. Not just physically.
She needed some time to adjust.
For example, sleeping.
Just as her consciousness was about to sink into chaos, Yan Wei’s voice suddenly pierced the silence. The voice passed through the air, then came along the floor, making Jiang Mi’s fingertips tingle:
“Jiang Mi.”
Every word was so heavy it was outrageous, “Never ask again.”
**
The morning light was filtered into a dim gray by the thick curtains. When Jiang Mi opened her eyes, the living room was dim, but she could see Yan Wei standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window in the outer room at a glance.
Through the transparent glass door, she stood in the center of the light and shadow.
Jiang Mi got up and opened the curtains. Yan Wei was wearing a loose-fitting nightgown, holding an unlit slim cigarette in her hand. Hearing the movement, she slowly turned her head.
Jiang Mi pushed open the glass door and said, “Morning.”
“Morning.”
Yan Wei’s voice was still rough from her illness.
“How are you feeling?” Jiang Mi sized up Yan Wei’s complexion. It seemed that there were no major problems.
Yan Wei was also sizing up Jiang Mi at the same time. It had been a long time since she had slept in the same room with someone, but last night, she had slept very soundly. When she woke up in the morning and saw the light outside, she was even in a daze for a moment.
She had been sitting on the sofa for a long time, looking at Jiang Mi. She suddenly felt an emptiness in her heart.
But she also couldn’t understand what that empty feeling was, or why it was there.
The feeling of irritation welled up again.
Now, looking at Jiang Mi standing in front of her, her emotions had changed a little…
Yan Wei held the cigarette in her hand, quietly broke it, and then slowly crushed it into pieces in her hand. She said, “So-so.”
“Let’s take your temperature again in a bit. I’ll go wash up first.”
Jiang Mi said as she turned and went to the bathroom first. She had to hurry up, otherwise she would be late for the set.
When she came out again, the air was filled with the aroma of baked grains and coffee, and the light outside the window was completely bright.
She looked at Yan Wei sitting at the table. Just as she was about to say something, she suddenly saw her phone screen buzzing at the corner of the table. She walked over and saw Zhao Jia’s name, her eyes flashing with guilt.
“What are you doing?” The moment the call was connected, she could hear that Zhao Jia’s anxious voice had eased a little. “I called you three times and you didn’t answer. I was about to rush back.”
Jiang Mi glanced at Yan Wei and walked a couple of steps away, holding her phone. “I was washing up. I didn’t notice.”
“Alright.”
Zhao Jia paused for half a second, and a rustling sound came from the receiver. “You’re at the hotel, right?”
Jiang Mi: “…Yes, what’s wrong?”
“I was afraid you’d been carried away by a wolf. Alright, just remember the time and don’t be late.” Zhao Jia: “We’re having breakfast. apple wants to say something to you.”
Before she could finish, another gentle voice sounded on the phone, “Mimi, good morning.”
Hearing this, a smile appeared on Jiang Mi’s face. “Hi, morning. From the sound of your voice, are you much better today?”
“Much better. Mimi, I’m planning to go back to Jincheng for a while after things are settled,” Jiang Yuying said on the other end.
Jiang Mi said, “It’s a good thing to change places—hmm…”
Almost at the same time, a warm body pressed against her from behind. The aggressive scent of brandy, mixed with the lingering rose scent, instantly enveloped her.
Jiang Mi’s hand trembled, and the phone fell onto the carpet.
She was pushed forward by Yan Wei, bending slightly, and at the same time, she used a cough to cover up her “mistake” just now. From the receiver, she could vaguely hear Jiang Yuying’s inquiry, “What’s wrong?”
“Mimi?”
“It’s nothing, it’s nothing…” Jiang Mi quickly bent down to pick up her phone. “I just choked on a—”
A hand first grabbed her wrist. Yan Wei’s other hand, her fingertips at the same time slowly slid over the seam of her slightly open lips, and the web of her thumb and forefinger held her chin, forcing her to look up.
apple was still saying something on the receiver, but all the syllables in Jiang Mi’s ears had turned into a buzzing noise.
Yan Wei’s fingers were gently playing with her lips, and she was so nervous she forgot to respond.
Until apple’s voice sounded again, “Are you okay, Mimi?”
Jiang Mi grabbed Yan Wei’s mischievous wrist, her face flushed as she replied, “I choked a little. It’s nothing, it’s nothing. apple, I’m running late. I’ll go get ready first. Talk to you later.”
Vaguely hearing the response from the other end, Jiang Mi decisively hung up the phone. She turned her head and looked at Yan Wei’s calm gaze. Before she could speak, Yan Wei slowly asked, “What?”
Jiang Mi: “…”
She took a breath. “Teacher Yan, you’ll be discovered like this.”
In fact, when Jiang Mi recalled it later, she might have had the intention of testing her when she said this. She hoped to hear the answer she wanted, the one she was looking forward to, from Yan Wei’s mouth.
But it was a pity.
Yan Wei didn’t say anything that day, as if what had just happened was just a little game she had thought of on the spot.
“I have to go,” Jiang Mi tidied her clothes. “I have an early scene today.”
Yan Wei’s chin pointed at the things on the table. “Let’s go together after we eat.”
“You’re still going to the set?” Jiang Mi said in surprise. “Your fever just broke. You’re still sick.”
“If I don’t go, Jiang Qu’s drama will have to wait for the whole crew.”
Yan Wei sat at the table, picked up her coffee, and gestured for Jiang Mi to sit down. “Eat.”
Jiang Mi was silent for a moment, then sighed and said, “Then you have to watch yourself. Be careful.”
“Aren’t you here?” The morning light outlined Yan Wei’s lips, along with a curve so faint it was almost invisible. She stirred the coffee vortex leisurely, her voice soaked in a certain satisfaction.
“You watch me.”
Jiang Mi paused. Jiang Mi pursed her lips slightly, her heartbeat skipping a beat under that calm gaze. She smiled, “Okay.”
Jiang Mi carefully cracked the shell of a boiled egg. The smooth egg white was revealed. She gently placed it on the small plate by Yan Wei’s hand, her movements so natural it was as if she had done it many times.
“I bought some fresh lemons. I’ll make you some lemon water at the set later.”
Yan Wei held her coffee cup, her gaze on Yan Wei’s lowered eyelashes. She hummed in a low voice, “Mmm.”
There was an indescribable warmth and thoughtfulness about Jiang Mi. For some reason, she suddenly thought of that apple. She wondered if Jiang Mi was like this when she took care of others.
The cleanly peeled, smooth egg lay on the plate. Yan Wei lowered her gaze, reached out with two fingers, and very lightly picked it up. Her fingertips seemed to unconsciously tighten a little, and the soft, resilient surface of the egg white sank slightly under her fingertips.
She suddenly spoke, her tone showing no particular emotion, “Have you done the same for others?”
Jiang Mi was engrossed in the egg in her hand. Hearing this, she nodded without thinking, “Mmm, I peel them often.” Her tone was a matter of course.
Yan Wei’s fingers tightened almost imperceptibly, and something gloomy congealed in her eyes. Unfortunately, Jiang Mi’s attention was completely captivated by the sticky eggshell fragments in front of her and she didn’t notice Yan Wei’s reaction.
But she quickly added, “I’ve peeled them for Lao Jiang—oh, that’s my mom. And Jiang Hu… she’s my sister…”
The air froze for a second.
Yan Wei took a light breath, as if to suppress some silent, churning emotions.
She didn’t look at Jiang Mi again, but just lowered her head, brought the egg with the small dent to her mouth, and took a bite, as if what she was biting was not soft food, but something else.
After breakfast, Jiang Mi got into Yan Wei’s nanny van.
The space in the car was very spacious, but Yan Wei seemed to just want to find the most stable position—she leaned over and rested her head directly on Jiang Mi’s lap.
The driver in the front seat, as if by tacit understanding, silently pressed the button to raise the partition, quietly enclosing the back seat into a secret world.
Jiang Mi found that her heart was always uncontrollably affected by Yan Wei’s actions.
Her gaze fell on Yan Wei’s sleeping profile. The sunlight passed through the car window and moved between her thick eyelashes.
The car made a slightly noisy sound as it passed over a speed bump.
Jiang Mi subconsciously reached out and carefully covered Yan Wei’s ear with her warm palm.
The warmth came through her skin, and Yan Wei slowly opened her eyes. Her eyes were first hazy with sleep, and then they clearly reflected Jiang Mi’s beautiful and delicate face.
She didn’t move, just looked at Jiang Mi.
This face was actually a face that could make people calm down and appreciate.
After a long time, she suddenly heard Jiang Mi’s low voice. Jiang Mi knew she wasn’t asleep.
“Sister.”
Jiang Mi looked out the window. “Actually, sometimes I feel that all of this is like a dream. Do you?”
Hearing this, Yan Wei slowly sat up from her. She suddenly raised her hand, her fingertips gently pinching Jiang Mi’s earlobe.
She asked in return, “And now? Is it still like a dream?”
“…”
The touch on her skin was warm and real, like a fine electric current.
Jiang Mi shook her head slightly, and a smile couldn’t help but appear on her lips. Perhaps she was also amused by Yan Wei’s reaction. She turned to look at Yan Wei and said with a smile, “Not anymore.”
Yan Wei’s gaze was locked on the smile on Jiang Mi’s face. She herself also silently twitched the corner of her mouth, and the force of her fingertips loosened a little. “Jiang Mi, why are you a little silly?”
At this moment, they had arrived at their destination. Jiang Mi didn’t have time to refute this sentence. From a distance, she could already see a group of fans waiting for Yan Wei outside the car window.
Jiang Mi’s gaze shrank. She immediately bent down and lowered her head, her movements as fast as a thief afraid of being caught. “There are so many people.”
Her shoulder-length black hair fell down, covering half of her face.
Yan Wei hadn’t expected Jiang Mi’s movements to be so fast. She looked out the window, her expression pausing. She couldn’t tell what she was feeling at this moment. It didn’t seem so comfortable.
But as for why? She didn’t know.
The next second, she looked down at Jiang Mi’s soft hair. Her hand followed and landed on the back of Jiang Mi’s head, unconsciously rubbing it.
These two days, she felt more and more that Jiang Mi was so obedient and to her liking, so obedient that she couldn’t put her down.
But at the same time, the strange emotion from the morning fell on her heart again, that empty… feeling that made one anxious.
It was also at this moment.
Yan Wei heard Jiang Mi’s voice sound quietly in the car, “I’m only silly in front of you. I’m not silly.”
This rebuttal might sound a bit childish, but in fact, it was what Jiang Mi really wanted to say in her heart.
I’ve never been a fool. I’m just sincere enough in front of you.
