Chapter 50: The Best
Jiang Mi was truly not afraid of haunted houses.
To her, those clumsy sound effects and plastic props were nothing more than a slightly noisy set. She knew it was fake, so she treated it purely as acting.
Therefore, even if she encountered something terrifying, the feeling of fear would be greatly reduced.
Before entering the haunted house, she asked Yan Wei if she was afraid.
Yan Wei was noncommittal, her expression faint, and it was hard to tell if she was afraid or not.
Jiang Mi thought she was just reluctant to refuse her. “If you don’t like it that much, we can go play something else.”
Hearing this, Yan Wei turned her head and looked at Jiang Mi for two seconds. “It’s fine. Aren’t you here?”
Jiang Mi’s heart pounded. Yan Wei had said this last time, and it gave her a great sense of being needed, as if Yan Wei really needed her.
The corners of her lips curved up. “Then I’ll protect you.”
Yan Wei glanced at the smile on Jiang Mi’s face and responded faintly, “Okay.”
They chose a medieval horror scene. The place was designed with great care. The space was narrow and dim, and the realistic smell of decay rushed into their nostrils, accompanied by the abrupt and piercing sound of glass being scratched.
Not long after they started, a pale, twisted shadow suddenly popped out from a hidden compartment on the side, almost touching Jiang Mi’s face!
Even Jiang Mi was startled by this sudden face, her body instantly tensing.
But at the same time, her actions were faster than her thoughts. Almost as a conditioned reflex, she reached back and pulled Yan Wei, who was beside her, into her embrace.
The next second, the ghost shadow disappeared, and the surroundings instantly plunged into a deeper darkness.
It was as if the ghost shadow had never appeared.
The air was stagnant, and in the darkness, only their slightly disordered breathing remained.
After a dozen seconds of silence.
Yan Wei’s voice came from her embrace, low in the mask, with a calmness that was completely different from usual, and even a hint of imperceptible playfulness.
“Jiang Mi,” Yan Wei began, her warm breath brushing against the skin of Jiang Mi’s neck, “you…”
Her hand moved in the darkness, her fingertips accurately brushing against Jiang Mi’s neck.
“…are sweating a lot.”
That action, in this environment and atmosphere, made it hard to tell for a moment whether it was a caress or a preparation to slit her throat.
Jiang Mi’s heart tightened slightly. She could even feel Yan Wei’s fingertips, stained with her own damp skin and body temperature.
But she hadn’t noticed that she was sweating.
But perhaps it was a momentary cold sweat, when that ghost appeared… but she was reluctant to admit it.
As for now, she was holding Yan Wei, the two of them pressed closely together—she was definitely sweating. Her temples, the back of her neck, a thin layer of moisture was clinging to her skin. In the dimness and silence, her senses were infinitely magnified.
Her warm breath came through her mask, landing near her collarbone. The darkness magnified all her senses, the friction of their clothes, their heartbeats transmitted through two layers of clothing, and even their fiercely beating glands.
An indescribable heat, mixed with a little bit of the embarrassment of being “seen through,” shot up from the soles of her feet to her heart.
She couldn’t say that she had been a little scared just now, right? That would be so awkward. She was the one who had suggested coming here. She had boasted that she wasn’t afraid.
“It’s a little hot in here…”
To cover it up, she even turned her head slightly, as if to avoid Yan Wei’s close breath.
In the darkness, she heard Yan Wei let out an almost inaudible low laugh. The vibration of her soft heart was clearly transmitted to her.
The laugh was short, muffled in her throat, and it made her heart beat faster.
Yan Wei didn’t leave her embrace, but instead adjusted her position slightly, letting her chin rest on her shoulder.
“Mmm,” she seemed to be seriously feeling it, “it is quite hot.”
That tone was less of an agreement and more of an indulgence.
Yan Wei slowly, with her fingernail, pinched the arm that was holding her, very lightly, more like a brush.
Jiang Mi pursed her lips and took a deep breath, but her lungs felt a little deprived of oxygen. She said in a muffled voice, “That ghost seems to be gone.”
Yan Wei: “Then let’s continue.”
Jiang Mi hummed in agreement, but didn’t immediately push her away. After two seconds, neither of them moved. She said, “Actually, it’s okay to wait a little longer, right?”
There was no one here. Even if there were surveillance cameras, they were wearing hats and masks. It wouldn’t hurt to hug for a while, right?
It was rare to be outside and be so unrestrained.
“Mmm, yes.”
Jiang Mi was quiet, seeing many pink little bubbles in her mind.
Then, she heard Yan Wei say, “I’m a little scared.”
Jiang Mi: “…Really?”
How come I can’t see it?
“Mmm.”
They were hugging in the dimness, counting each other’s heartbeats.
A few minutes later, they heard the sound of other tourists coming from behind, and the ghost shadow flew in front of them for the second time.
This time, Jiang Mi met its gaze.
A very ugly ghost.
“Ha—”
The ghost shadow bared its teeth at her.
Jiang Mi looked at it complainingly, then gave it a look: Come back later. Why are you so thoughtless?
Ghost shadow: “…?”
“Ha—”
The ghost shadow’s expression was even more twisted the second time, trying to finish its job.
Jiang Mi rolled her eyes and said dismissively, “…Oh my god, we’re so scared. Go away! Aiya, so scared, so scared!”
Ghost shadow: “…”
What kind of acting is this? Insulting who for the sake of your love life? With this acting, no one would even want you to play a ghost!
And this is a haunted house! Not a dog house! Not a place for you to feed dogs! Not a place for you to talk about love! Don’t you have a bed at home! Ah!
The ghost shadow’s eyes lost all soul. Then it bared its teeth and retreated. Before long, the sound of terrified screams came from behind.
It sounded like it had found its real audience.
Time passed, second by second.
Jiang Mi let go of her. At this moment, the sound of other tourists talking came from the front. Of course, she wasn’t sure if they were real “tourists.”
Along with the footsteps and talking, a ghastly green light came from the distance, and it happened to suddenly illuminate Yan Wei’s face.
On that face, where was there any trace of being frightened?
Only a pair of eyes were surprisingly bright in the green light, the corners of her eyes slightly raised, with an undisguised—predatory interest and smile, staring at her without blinking.
Jiang Mi: “…”
What happened to being scared?
Her gaze was on Yan Wei’s excessively beautiful face. That blatant gaze was more aggressive than any ghost shadow.
Jiang Mi suddenly became a little nervous. She couldn’t say what this nervousness was from.
And then came the belated shame.
If she had known, she wouldn’t have exaggerated. Why did it seem like she was more scared?
The green light soon moved away, and the space returned to darkness.
“Um… shall we go?”
Jiang Mi looked into the distance. There must be more “good things” waiting for them ahead.
“Slow down.” Yan Wei’s voice was particularly clear in the darkness. “Isn’t it dark?”
The moment her words fell, a warm, dry hand clasped her wrist. Her fingertips were on the place where Yan Wei’s pulse was beating.
Jiang Mi said, “I’m not afraid. I’ll hold you.”
Jiang Mi now knew clearly that Yan Wei was not afraid at all.
Now that she said this, it was more like a tacit little game. Actually… it felt good.
After she said it, the curve of her lips under her mask kept lifting.
Now it was really hot.
Her hand was in Yan Wei’s, as if a fire were burning.
She slowed her steps and felt that Yan Wei’s fingers had paused for a second, but then she let her lead.
In less than half an hour, after provoking all the “ghosts,” Jiang Mi and Yan Wei successfully completed the entire course.
Walking out the back door, outside the haunted house was the usual hustle and bustle of an amusement park.
The screams of children mixed with the ding-dong of music, and the sweet, cloying smell of popcorn dispelled the musty coldness of the haunted house just now.
Jiang Mi and Yan Wei’s hands were still linked.
In the sunlight, in the crowd, there was a special kind of nervousness.
Jiang Mi was still a little worried and was about to pull her hand back, but the next second, Yan Wei held it tightly. Yan Wei turned her head to look at her. “What?”
Jiang Mi wanted to say “I’m afraid of being photographed,” but after thinking about it, she said, “It’s nothing, it’s nothing.”
Yan Wei hadn’t said anything. It would be a buzzkill for her to say that. What kind of person was Yan Wei? Wouldn’t she have considered these things? Thinking of this, she felt the bubbles in her heart grow even bigger.
The sun didn’t seem so hot, the people around didn’t seem so noisy, and even the fierce old woman who had bumped into her just now had become kind and amiable.
At this moment, a few girls rushed out of the haunted house, patting their chests dramatically. One of the girls’ legs was so weak she needed someone to support her.
“That scared me to death! That hanging ghost suddenly fell down!”
Her companion immediately agreed, “Yes, yes! And that coffin! The lid opened by itself!”
Jiang Mi’s gaze instantly shifted from Yan Wei’s face to the girls. After listening, she looked up at Yan Wei again.
She was used to meeting Yan Wei’s gaze every time she looked at her.
Jiang Mi looked left and right, then turned her head and said quietly, “You don’t seem to be afraid at all.”
“Is it possible that I just…” Yan Wei looked at her, “…really need you?”
Jiang Mi’s heart trembled violently for a moment.
This sentence was like a sugar-coated cannonball, suddenly hitting the softest part of Jiang Mi’s heart.
It was almost noon, the sun was glaring, and the noise was deafening, but all her senses seemed to be locked on the person in front of her.
The undisguised possessiveness in Yan Wei’s eyes was more heart-pounding than any stimulation in the haunted house.
“Sister.”
“Hmm?”
Jiang Mi’s tone carried a sincere confusion. “Have you ever been in a relationship?”
“What’s wrong?”
“You’re like someone who’s been in many relationships…”
Yan Wei looked up. The light was a bit glaring, and she lowered her head again. She asked in return, “And you?”
“Me?”
“You’re quite like one too.”
Jiang Mi paused. “I’ve really never been in one!”
She said defensively.
“Oh, and you’ve never liked anyone?”
Yan Wei’s final note was slightly suspended, her emotions unreadable.
A few seconds of silence were stretched out.
Yan Wei looked at Jiang Mi’s expression and found that there was a slight hesitation on her face. Her eyes darkened slightly, and then she heard Jiang Mi explain.
“No, no… not someone I liked.”
“?”
The air seemed to freeze for a moment.
Jiang Mi found that Yan Wei’s expression had changed slightly, and she regretted bringing it up. She had just been reminiscing, and it had just happened to come to mind. Now that she had said it, she didn’t want to hide it from Yan Wei.
“It was just when I first entered the industry. I chatted with a senior for a few days.”
Chatted for a few days?
Jiang Mi was only twenty-one or twenty-two at that time. A senior in the industry was very friendly to her. Maybe because she and Zhao Jia had encountered too many difficulties, and suddenly meeting a warm person, she had a little bit of an illusion?
After chatting for a few days, the senior had confessed to her… she had told Zhao Jia about it, and Zhao Jia had told her to calm down for a few days.
Later…
Only two hours had passed, and she had immediately refused.
Until she met Yan Wei.
Only then did she know that liking didn’t require thinking.
“I was still young at that time. Not that young—” Jiang Mi saw Yan Wei’s eyes darken, and her words couldn’t help but speed up. “I just wasn’t mature enough. But I didn’t like her, really, I didn’t.”
“So you liked her because she was good?”
“No, I didn’t like her. I really didn’t.” Jiang Mi felt that something was wrong. “So far, I’ve only ever liked you.”
“Why did you think she was good?”
Yan Wei didn’t ease up. She continued to ask, but her voice had lost most of its warmth.
Jiang Mi was a little afraid to speak. Her fingers subconsciously clenched Yan Wei’s wrist. “She wasn’t that good… not as good as you.”
Yan Wei didn’t ask anymore, but she was also stingy with any comforting words.
Jiang Mi moved a step closer, her fingertips gently rubbing the back of Yan Wei’s hand. “You’re the best.”
“What if someone better than me appears now…” Yan Wei’s backhand grabbed Jiang Mi’s fingers, squeezing them slightly.
“Impossible.” Jiang Mi pulled the distance between the two of them even closer.
“No one will be better than you.”
In my heart, you are the best.
You will always be the best.
Jiang Mi gently hugged Yan Wei. In the noisy crowd and under the scorching sun, she indulged herself in expressing her feelings. “Yan Wei, you have no idea how much I like you.”
