Chapter 77: Stay p1
The room was silent. The doors and windows were all closed, and the thick curtains were tightly drawn, letting in almost no light.
They had also slept in each other’s arms before, but never so peacefully. Jiang Mi held Yan Wei, her hand on Yan Wei’s back, gently stroking her for a long time. The person in her arms’ breathing gradually became shallow.
The ceiling suddenly lit up. Jiang Mi carefully lay straight, then gently flipped her phone over and placed it face down.
Outside, the world was in chaos.
The internet was in a state of darkness.
At least at this moment, in her and Yan Wei’s world, there was nothing but each other.
If there was anything to face in the end, that was a matter for after she woke up.
Her waist suddenly sank.
Jiang Mi heard an uneasy whisper by her neck, “What are you looking at?”
“Nothing.”
This was the first time she had discovered that Yan Wei was so insecure.
Jiang Mi asked, “Weren’t you asleep?”
The force on her waist tightened slightly, and Yan Wei’s body leaned over. She turned over and they hugged each other.
Yan Wei felt this warmth and only then replied, “I’m a light sleeper.”
Jiang Mi thought, This is not just light, it’s like she wasn’t asleep at all. She patted Yan Wei’s back again and said, “Go to sleep.”
Yan Wei didn’t say anything more, but just held onto Jiang Mi a little tighter. Her cheek was resting on Jiang Mi’s shoulder, and she lightly sniffed the faint scent that belonged to Jiang Mi.
They hadn’t slept well recently, and their minds and bodies had been in a state of high tension for a long time. Once they were stable and relaxed, the fatigue of their bodies came in like a rising tide.
It was a good night’s sleep with no dreams.
**
It was also a good day.
The afternoon light slanted in from the window, casting no regular light and shadow on the tiled floor. When Jiang Mi woke up, Yan Wei was no longer in bed. She rubbed her arms and sat up from the bed. She inadvertently heard a sound from outside, and only then did she wake up with a start.
Walking out of the bedroom, she was then stunned by the scene in front of her—
Something was simmering in the pot, and the air was filled with a fresh, slightly sweet food aroma. There seemed to be the smell of vegetables in the air.
Yan Wei was facing her, standing in front of the counter of the open kitchen. Her movements were a little unusually clumsy. She was looking down, extremely focused on a small handful of green onions.
She seemed to be trying to cut them evenly.
Jiang Mi leaned against the door frame and didn’t make a sound.
She thought to herself, Teacher Yan’s standards are really high. Even a green onion in her world must be neat and tidy, according to her rules.
She looked at Yan Wei’s slightly arched back, at the slender wrist that was exposed under her nightgown. Her gaze moved up. Her dark hair was hanging by the side of her neck, but she could still vaguely see the marking marks that had not yet faded.
To be precise, these marks would probably take a week to completely disappear.
This scene had a strange tranquility, completely different from the fierce entanglement of last night, the dull, painful kisses, and Yan Wei’s often-churning gloom and unpredictability.
For some reason, the tip of her nose was a little sore.
Yan Wei finally sensed Jiang Mi’s gaze. Her chopping movements paused for a moment. She looked up and, with an inexplicably serious look, looked at Jiang Mi for a few seconds. Only then did she say, “It’s almost ready.”
“I feel like I’m dreaming.”
“What dream?”
Jiang Mi explained, “I mean, seeing this scene, I feel like I’m dreaming. After all, in this world, there will definitely not be a second person who can be served by the Movie Queen like this.”
Yan Wei’s response was a pleased expression. She was very pleased. After having money and status, there were few things she couldn’t control. All choices were between her likes and dislikes.
Praise and flattery were the easiest to get in her eyes, but at this moment, she actually felt a sense of satisfaction and joy.
It had been a long time.
Like sparkling water churning in her heart.
She was even a little excited.
“What are you making?” Jiang Mi asked, her voice still hoarse from just waking up.
Yan Wei replied faintly, “Yam and chicken soup.”
Her voice was very light, almost drowned out by the boiling sound in the pot. But her acting skills were too solid, and she could still clearly hear every word.
Yan Wei lowered her head, her gaze returning to the not-so-perfect chopped green onions on the cutting board, as if that were more difficult to deal with than a major scene.
Seeing this, Jiang Mi’s heart suddenly felt as if it had been gently bumped by something soft.
She remembered last night, when Yan Wei had used an almost-destructive way to demand a promise, and had imprisoned her by her side with cold metal and a scorching hot kiss.
And at this moment, she was here, expressing her feelings in such an almost-clumsy, everyday way.
In the past, Yan Wei would never have been like this.
No matter how many problems there were between them, Jiang Mi was happy now.
Jiang Mi’s state was already no different from usual. She said with a grin, “Teacher Yan can actually cook? I didn’t even know.”
Yan Wei said, “A little.”
She couldn’t before. Because she had never had any requirements for food. Apart from heavy, oily things, she had very few dietary restrictions. So even under Mo Yun’s torment, she could still eat to maintain her body’s functions.
Later, when they no longer lived together, she had started to try to make some simple meals for herself.
But they were also very rough.
After a while, she had no time and no energy to do these things anymore.
Jiang Mi listened quietly to Yan Wei’s words, her thoughts stagnant for a few seconds. When she came to her senses, she said, “Teacher Yan, is this you now?”
Yan Wei paused after she finished speaking, and a hint of a question appeared in her usually cold eyes.
“What?”
“You never told me these things before. You never said them.”
“…”
Yan Wei lowered her eyes, her expression not very natural. But she was clearly not used to this state of being at a disadvantage and avoiding, and she immediately looked at Jiang Mi and asked, “Is it good or bad?”
Jiang Mi laughed and said seriously, “Good, very good.”
After she finished speaking, she added, “But you still have to work hard. You have to be even better.”
Yan Wei glanced at her, swept over her eyebrows and eyes, and then looked at her wrist. She then lowered her head to tidy up the few green onions. She asked, “Does your wrist still hurt?”
Jiang Mi didn’t care anymore.
“A little.” She paused slightly. “You’re not allowed to use this thing in the future…”
She said as she walked towards Yan Wei, but she didn’t notice that Yan Wei didn’t respond to her at this time.
“I’ll help you.” Jiang Mi walked over, reached out, and wanted to take the knife from her hand. But Yan Wei subconsciously shrank back, her fingertips brushing against the blade.
She frowned slightly, not because of the pain, but more like she was annoyed at her own lack of coordination.
“Don’t move.”
Jiang Mi was startled. After seeing clearly, she breathed a sigh of relief—fortunately, it was just a small cut, and there was no blood.
She held Yan Wei’s wrist and brought her to the faucet, gently rinsing the fair hand with cool water.
The sound of the water was rushing. They were very close, and their breaths intertwined.
Yan Wei lowered her eyes and watched Jiang Mi hold her fingers. Her eyelashes were long and thick, casting a beautiful silhouette under her eyes, covering the usual sharp and cold light.
“Yan Wei,” Jiang Mi turned off the water, still holding her hand, “you don’t have to do these things.”
Yan Wei looked up at her. She didn’t want to say much. She had never been a person who liked to express herself.
She was used to her own lifestyle and way of doing things.
But she looked at Jiang Mi, paused, and with a rare uncertainty, told Jiang Mi, “I just wanted to try.”
To try what she had never done.
To try what it was like to follow her instincts and not think about a person.
Jiang Mi suddenly understood that Yan Wei had really taken her words to heart this time. Yan Wei was using her own way to try to walk out of that personal world built on unease and indifference.
Yan Wei might still not know how to love a person correctly, how to express her concern and love in words, but she was starting to explore. This was a good thing.
Jiang Mi nodded, looked away from Yan Wei, picked up the knife, and quickly cut the remaining green onion tails. “Is my cutting very ugly?”
She admired it for a moment and was sure that this did not meet Yan Wei’s aesthetic standards.
Yan Wei looked at the object that had completely deviated from her plan. “Ugly.”
Jiang Mi pouted. “Don’t force me to scold you. You’re not allowed to say it’s ugly!”
Yan Wei: “…?”
Yan Wei and Jiang Mi looked at each other for a few seconds. Seeing the slightly dazed expression on Yan Wei’s face, she suddenly laughed. Yan Wei watched her laugh, and a smile also inexplicably appeared at the corner of her mouth.
It seemed that they had never had such a conversation.
Jiang Mi thought for a moment. The Yan Wei she saw was multi-faceted. Wasn’t the her that Yan Wei saw also multi-faceted?
In the past, they had spent too little time together.
Jiang Mi said, “Yan Wei, we’re finally a little like a normal couple.”
A relationship?
Yan Wei silently repeated the words in her mouth.
Bubbles were rising in the pot, and the rising steam, with the sweet aroma of food, filled the kitchen. Jiang Mi turned off the fire, picked up the white porcelain bowl next to her, and filled it with soup.
She didn’t rush to hand it to Yan Wei, but first gently stirred it with a spoon to let the heat dissipate faster.
“It’s a little hot. It smells so good. I think it will be delicious. You’re a little too amazing.” She said, scooped up a small spoonful, and naturally brought it to Yan Wei’s lips. “Taste it for saltiness?”
Yan Wei was stunned for a moment. Her gaze moved from the soup spoon to Jiang Mi’s face. In those eyes that were always filled with scrutiny or coldness, at this moment, a hint of curiosity flashed.
A few seconds later, she lowered her head very slightly and took a sip from Jiang Mi’s hand.
Her long eyelashes were lowered, covering the emotions in her eyes.
This kind of intimate feeding was something she had never experienced in her memory.
“How is it? Is it salty enough?” Jiang Mi asked.
“Mmm.”
Jiang Mi also took a sip. The warm, smooth soup, with the clear sweetness of yam and the fresh aroma of chicken soup, was indeed just right. “Have you really never learned before?”
She looked at Yan Wei in some surprise. “This tastes too good.”
“No,” Yan Wei looked up, her tone as flat as if she were stating an objective fact. “This is the first time. I followed a tutorial.” She paused and added, “I watched it twice.”
Jiang Mi silently gave her a thumbs-up.
Generally speaking, a character like Yan Wei shouldn’t be good at cooking.
According to her understanding of Yan Wei, a person whose life focus was far from the kitchen and whose personality was extremely picky, even if she could cook, it wouldn’t be to the point of being amazing.
But in fact, it was not so.
Was this the talent of the strong, to be able to quickly master the essence of even cooking?
“A tutorial can only teach the steps…” Jiang Mi praised without reservation, “it’s still you who is too strong. Teacher Yan, how can a person be so excellent?”
Yan Wei paused and met Jiang Mi’s sincere and unpretentious eyes. It wasn’t that she hadn’t heard Jiang Mi praise her before, but she didn’t know why she was suddenly a little unnatural today.
She twitched her lips and said, “It’s alright. I just didn’t want to make it too bad.”
