Chapter 43: Tightening Part 2

This was Xu Yinian’s first time witnessing Bai Ran’s “Eldest Daughter” side, and she felt quite awkward in front of the secretary. The woman seemed to have a quiet personality, offering only a professional smile before looking away.

Bai Ran was used to this. The people around her knew not to talk too much, especially in front of Xu Yinian.

Secretary Chen had heard of Xu Yinian more than once, but this was the first time she had seen her in person. The girl was soft and sweet, pure as a blank sheet of paper. It felt as though one could see right into the depths of her clear, light-colored eyes with a single glance.

With just that one look, Chen understood why “Little Bai” took such great care to hide her true nature. After all, the real Miss Bai was an existence that could make one’s blood run cold.

If possible, Secretary Chen hoped Xu Yinian would never find out. Otherwise, something truly terrifying would surely happen.

Xu Yinian sat by the bed, quietly watching the wound on Bai Ran’s finger being disinfected. Her phone screen lit up. She looked down instinctively; it was Shen Ruoshuang.

Srs: The Student Club Federation waived the Book Club’s fees. Do you want to join any other clubs? I’ll help you fill out the registration form.

The tone was no longer stubborn or petulant. Xu Yinian didn’t even realize that she had breathed a sigh of relief upon reading it. This newfound ease made her less inclined to refuse or run away.

Bai Ran was injured, so she likely wouldn’t be browsing the recruitment booths anymore. Xu Yinian happened to have one club she really wanted to join, and there was no harm in telling Shen Ruoshuang—since the other girl definitely wouldn’t join it.

Yinian: Can you check out the Animal Protection Association for me? Thank you.

Xu Yinian was still thinking about the disabled orange-and-white cat she hadn’t been able to save in the past. It was a lingering regret of hers.

In the distance, Bai Ran’s eyes were dark. From her angle, she could see the chat interface perfectly. She clearly wasn’t going to allow anyone to lead Yinian into something outside of her control. Her previous decision was reaffirmed once again.

Xu Yinian suddenly remembered she needed to go back to the infirmary’s main desk to get a signature and stamp for her Injury Company completion form. She stood up, informed Bai Ran, and said she would be right back.

As she pulled the application form out of her backpack, the secretary suddenly spoke up. “Miss Xu, if you’d like, you can leave your bag with me for a moment.”

Xu Yinian paused and saw the secretary was already holding Bai Ran’s jacket and bag. Realizing the woman was just being helpful and that she would be back quickly anyway, she agreed.

She failed to notice the subtle look of avoidance in the secretary’s eyes as the woman stared at the corner of the phone Yinian had casually tossed into the bag.

Just as she was about to join the queue at the tent outside, an abrupt voice came from beside her.

“Junior, we already know we were wrong. Can’t we talk about this…?”

Xu Yinian was so startled she stumbled back a few steps, nearly twisting her ankle again. A strange man stood before her. Because of certain past events, Xu Yinian was generally afraid of men; being confronted alone now made her face turn ghost-white.

The man was the relentless Public Relations Department Head. He had followed them all the way here, but because he feared Bai Ran, he hadn’t dared to approach Yinian for mercy until now. Seeing her come out alone, he seized the opportunity.

Taking advantage of Xu Yinian’s seemingly soft and easy-to-bully nature, he prepared to harass her into compliance. “It’s about that matter with the Public Relations Department… several of our members have been expelled…”

Xu Yinian couldn’t listen anymore. In a rare move, she interrupted him. “What are you talking about? I… I don’t know you, and I don’t know anything about expulsions.”

“Junior, stop joking. Didn’t you have Bai Ran add a clause to the sponsorship contract? She demanded that the department members who offended you that day be expelled.”

Hearing the familiar name, Xu Yinian’s eyes widened in shock. Bai Ran? Did Sister Ran do something behind my back?

She suddenly remembered the gossip she hadn’t finished hearing near the recruitment tents. The sponsorship had almost been withdrawn, and it was only saved after several “rule-breaking” members were expelled…

The sponsor was Xinyu Medical, and she had heard that Bai Ran’s family ran a medical enterprise. All the clues finally connected.

Xu Yinian had thought the matter was over the day Bai Ran stood up for her. She had no idea how powerful Bai Ran was behind the scenes. Just like the private secretary she had met today.

This was the true side of the “Eldest Daughter.” A vast gulf existed between them.

The Department Head was also confused. The bewilderment on Xu Yinian’s face didn’t look fake. Had Bai Ran really not mentioned this to her? Wouldn’t standing up for her be the best way to gain her favor?

“Junior, Bai Ran listens to you. If you didn’t actually want them expelled, could you please put in a good word for us? For her, it’s just a matter of saying the word.”

Xu Yinian’s mind was a mess. Hearing the two of them being equated like that made her voice sound muffled. “I’m sorry, I can’t help you. Bai Ran and I are just roommates. She doesn’t ‘listen’ to me, and I can’t interfere in her business.”

The Department Head wouldn’t let her go. He asked bluntly, “Then why did Bai Ran go to such great lengths to seek revenge for you? They didn’t offend Bai Ran; you’re the only one they had a conflict with.”

This question hit the mark. It was the very question Xu Yinian was afraid to face: why would Sister Ran do so much for her?

“Is she…”

Just as the Department Head was about to voice his suspicion, a voice came from behind them. “Are you looking for me?”

Terrified, he swallowed his words and looked up, trembling. He met a pair of eyes that were far too calm. There was no surprise in her gaze at seeing him there with Xu Yinian. It was as if he were simply another piece of a plan falling into place.

The Department Head suddenly realized that the meticulously calculating and powerful Bai Ran had never once warned them not to tell Xu Yinian about this.

Upon enrolling in university, Xu Yinian was mistakenly assigned to the most eye-catching dormitory at X University.

Roommate Number One, Shen Ruoshuang, was an academic goddess and campus belle who had gone viral in high school with a single, stunningly beautiful but blurry photo from an awards ceremony.

Roommate Number Two, Ji Yan, was the daughter of a triple-gold-winning film empress and a renowned director, a famous second-generation star who had placed first in the arts school entrance exam.

Roommate Number Three, Bai Ran, was a mysterious young lady whose family had donated an entire laboratory building to the university before she even enrolled.

Unlike everyone else's envy and curiosity, only Xu Yinian knew the truth: she was the vicious cannon fodder roommate in a yuri novel starring the main couple, Ji Yan and Shen Ruoshuang. Her script was one where she would court death and be sacrificed for the plot.

To escape the storyline and live a peaceful university life, she resolved to keep her distance from the two favored protagonists:

She played dead in front of her former "love rival," Shen Ruoshuang, never mentioning their past grievances.

After stumbling upon Ji Yan's "player" behavior, she was overcome with a desire to survive, offering explanations and flattery while promising to keep her mouth shut.

She took the initiative to ask the young lady, Bai Ran, out for meals and study sessions, creating space for the main couple to be alone.

Just when Xu Yinian thought the two should have gotten together as they did in the original novel, she discovered that the way everyone looked at her had changed—

The lofty beauty from the novel, Shen Ruoshuang, cornered her against the edge of the bed in their empty dorm room. Beneath her cool voice was a suppressed, fiery obsession. "Niannian, are you avoiding me?"

The severe germaphobe from the novel, Ji Yan, ignored Shen Ruoshuang's warnings, her thumb repeatedly wiping at Xu Yinian's suspiciously crimson lips. "Does it hurt? Then be good. I don't like things that others have used."

And when the gentle and frail young lady's morbid fascination was discovered, she faced Xu Yinian's plea of "Aren't we friends?" As always, she leaned close to her ear, but instead of comforting words, Bai Ran's voice was a tender murmur, as if kissing her earlobe. "Is this something friends do?" In the next second, she bit down hard, as if in punishment.

A shou protagonist who is universally adored. The story features one-sided crushes from all characters, with a 1v1 ending.

The final pairing is with Shen Ruoshuang.

Content Warning: Besides the three roommates, there are other potential love interests. Later in the story, the official love interest's mother will also develop a one-sided crush on the protagonist. This is, at its core, a "universally adored" story.
