Chapter 16: Kneeling on Her Thighs.
In the years Huai Xing had been in Jingcheng, she had encountered many thunderstorms, so the number of times they had lain in the same bed was not small. But situations like this were few and far between.
Two minutes later, she was lying beside Chu Wantang.
A soft, white comforter covered them. Her hands were resting on her stomach as she stared at the chandelier on the ceiling, feeling a little awkward.
Beside her, Chu Wantang’s eyes were closed, as if she hadn’t noticed anything. But she silently reached out an arm, pulled the person a little closer to her, and didn’t immediately remove her arm from Huai Xing’s waist.
Huai Xing licked her lips and slowly lowered her eyelashes.
It was at this moment that Chu Wantang’s lips parted slightly, and a moist voice sounded by Huai Xing’s ear. She said, “Wan Yi said you did a good job. She has a date at noon and asked me to pass it on.”
“I’ll keep working hard,” Huai Xing said with a laugh. “I’ll look up to Sister Wan Yi.”
Chu Wantang laughed along with her. “Then will you still look up to me?”
“Of course, Jiejie.”
Huai Xing said from the bottom of her heart, “You’ll always be my role model. Oh, not just me. I know many colleagues look up to you as a role model.”
“What else do you know?”
“What?”
“For example, which other colleagues like me?”
Huai Xing hadn’t expected Chu Wantang to suddenly ask such a question. She was stunned for a moment. “I…”
But before she could answer, the woman beside her said in an extremely nonchalant tone, “It’s not important.”
Chu Wantang’s words were like a murmur. “As long as you like me.”
Those few simple words once again stirred up a huge wave in Huai Xing’s heart. And at that moment, under the covers, her hands, which were resting on her stomach, were slowly covered by a warmth that was not her own.
The back of her hand was covered by Chu Wantang’s palm, a very relaxed fit.
Chu Wantang lifted her eyelids slightly and looked at Huai Xing’s profile, a faint smile spreading across her lips. “Am I right, Xiao Xing?”
“You are, Jiejie.”
“Sleep.”
“Good afternoon.”
After replying, Huai Xing couldn’t fall asleep at all. She didn’t dare to make any big movements, her consciousness focused on the even breathing so close to her.
What did Chu Wantang’s actions mean? What did that sentence just now mean? Was she expressing the intimacy of their bond? Or… was there another possibility? But she didn’t dare to think too much, afraid that it would turn out to be just her own wishful thinking.
Sometimes, Huai Xing couldn’t help but wonder if Chu Wantang had been hurt in a past relationship, which was why she had set such rules.
But she had also quietly tried to get information from Su Cheng, who had clearly stated that there was no such thing. Chu Wantang was like a person who had severed all emotional ties, born with such a temperament, rejecting all suitors no matter how outstanding they were.
Thinking about these things, Huai Xing’s mind was a little confused.
After a long while, she let out a deep breath. She shouldn’t fantasize about more things. Maintaining the status quo was good enough.
An hour later, Chu Wantang’s alarm went off.
Huai Xing put on a drowsy look and called out, “Jiejie.” Worried about being late to the venue, she added, “I’ll go change first.”
“Wait.” Chu Wantang rolled her neck, her long hair swaying with the movement. “My neck is a little uncomfortable.”
Huai Xing asked with concern, “Do you need me to rub it for you?”
“No need.”
Chu Wantang propped herself up and sat up, following up with a question, “Is your neck uncomfortable too? In the corridor, I saw that girl named He He rubbing your neck.”
“No, my neck is fine. She was…” Huai Xing stopped herself in time.
Because Chu Wantang had reached out, pushed her hair aside, and placed her hand on the side of her neck.
There was a slight difference between the warmth of her palm and the temperature of her own skin. Huai Xing’s gaze was fixed on Chu Wantang’s impossibly beautiful face. She saw a hint of disappointment in her eyes as her lips parted. “Then it seems you two are very close. What should I do, Xiao Xing? I’m always worried that someone will surpass our relationship. Am I being too sensitive? Is this not good? This is a normal level of contact, but I…”
“No, Jiejie.” Huai Xing raised her hand and held the other’s wrist, saying without hesitation, “There’s no such possibility. I won’t let her do that anymore.”
“Okay.”
Chu Wantang’s hand moved up, her breath hitching. Her fingertips pinched the girl’s pink, moist earlobe. “I haven’t bought you earrings in a long time. Pick a pair yourself and send me the link.”
“I already have so many earrings that I can wear a different pair every day.” Huai Xing felt as if countless fine needles were roaming under her skin, making her want to escape. She forced a smile. “If we don’t get up now, we’ll be late, Director Chu.”
Using this excuse, she fled into the bathroom.
Chu Wantang propped herself up with one hand, staring at her own fingertips suspended in the air, slightly stunned.
Two seconds later, she looked towards the bathroom, and the corners of her lips curled up slightly.
…
They had arranged to look at apartments with Wen Shiwei on Wednesday evening.
There were many people working in Jingcheng, and with it being only a month after the New Year, it was the peak season for renting. Real estate agents wouldn’t let themselves off work so early in order to make a sale.
When Huai Xing and Chu Wantang drove to the first residential complex, Wen Shiwei and the agent had been waiting at the entrance for about three minutes.
Seeing Huai Xing, Wen Shiwei broke into a smile. “Xingxing!”
She didn’t ignore Chu Wantang so obviously either, calling out, “Sister Wantang.”
Chu Wantang nodded with a smile. Huai Xing’s eyes curved, and she walked inside, asking, “Sister Shiwei, are you used to your work these past two days? And how’s the climate in Jingcheng for you? And the food here, does it suit your taste?”
“It’s all pretty good. You’re so concerned about me. It’s really touching, Xingxing. You’ll have to look out for me in Jingcheng from now on.”
Huai Xing glanced at Chu Wantang’s expression. It hadn’t changed, and she still looked gentle and soft.
But she didn’t dare to accept the statement directly. Coincidentally, they had already entered the complex, so she changed the subject. “Sister Shiwei, you have good taste. The scenery in this complex is so nice. It makes me want to move in.”
Chu Wantang’s footsteps paused, her brow lifting slightly.
Hearing this, the agent at the side immediately started her introduction.
She had been in this industry for many years and was very skilled. After finishing the relevant information, she started to praise them, complimenting the three of them on their high looks and good temperament, pouring out compliments as if they were free.
After a while, they entered the first apartment, and she returned to the topic of the house.
Wen Ruyu’s business had been growing steadily over the years, and the Wen family was no longer short on money. If it weren’t for the fact that Wen Shiwei was not yet eligible to buy a house, Wen Ruyu would definitely have bought a house for her daughter here. For now, Wen Shiwei could only rent.
Wen Shiwei was not considering sharing an apartment. This first apartment was a hundred square meters, with two bedrooms and one living room. The location was good, the complex was new, the apartment was well-decorated, and it had good lighting with a north-south orientation. It had many advantages.
But she had little experience in renting, so she mainly asked Chu Wantang.
“Is it a ‘deposit’ or a ‘down payment’? Is it the first time it’s being rented out? Are the furniture and appliances new? We don’t want to inhale formaldehyde…”
The agent handled all the questions, and Wen Shiwei was very satisfied. She pointed to the second bedroom and said with a radiant expression, “Xingxing, you can live here then.”
“Wen Shiwei,” Chu Wantang reminded her leisurely from the side, “don’t decide so quickly. This isn’t how you look at apartments.”
Huai Xing also advised, “That’s right, Sister Shiwei. This is only the first one.”
“You’re right. How much was the monthly rent for this place again?”
The agent said very sincerely, “9800. This price is already very low, Miss Wen.”
Huai Xing was stunned. “That’s more than my monthly salary.”
Chu Wantang ruffled her hair. “Why don’t you count my salary in?”
Wen Shiwei was not to be outdone. “Xingxing, I have money too.”
The agent: “…”
Am I the only one who’s broke? Is there any justice in this world? I really want to “steal” their money.
It took them almost two hours to see the three apartments for the night.
Unsurprisingly, the next two apartments were more expensive than the first. Showing the bad ones first and then the good ones was a common tactic of real estate agents, even if this apartment wasn’t bad. And in order to get the client to pay the deposit early, the agent would also create a sense of urgency, telling the client that the apartment was in high demand and would be gone soon.
Wen Shiwei had also become smarter and didn’t fall for these tricks. Her family was not short on money, and her salary in Jingcheng was high, but that didn’t mean she could spend money foolishly and be a sucker.
In the end, after seeing the three apartments, she didn’t give the agent a definite answer immediately, only saying that she would consider it if the first one could be discounted.
At nine o’clock at night, the three of them got into the car.
They had all had dinner before coming, so now they just needed to drop Wen Shiwei off at her hotel.
Jingcheng was bustling, the night sky as dark as ink.
Wen Shiwei was in the back seat, her gaze often falling on Huai Xing’s profile in the passenger seat. Chu Wantang would look in the rearview mirror and always catch her gaze.
After catching it again, Chu Wantang started a topic. “Of the three apartments today, you were most satisfied with the first one?”
“Yes,” Wen Shiwei answered naturally, not specifying the reason.
But Chu Wantang knew very well.
It must have been because of Huai Xing’s “It makes me want to move in.” Huai Xing hadn’t said anything similar about the next two apartments.
Huai Xing, in the passenger seat, couldn’t sense the hostile magnetic field between the two. She held her phone and turned her head to ask, “Then why didn’t you decide, Sister Shiwei? Aren’t you afraid someone else will take it?”
“Isn’t this the experience Sister Wantang taught me?” Wen Shiwei raised an eyebrow. “Sister Wantang is several years older than us and has more experience. Of course, we have to be more patient.”
She emphasized the words “several years older.”
Chu Wantang’s lips twitched slightly. “Wen Shiwei, you still have a lot to learn from me.” She specifically emphasized, “When I was resting with Xiao Xing at the hotel at noon, she even said I was her role model. If this continues, it seems you’ll have to take me as your role model too.”
Hearing the word “hotel,” Wen Shiwei’s expression changed slightly. She wanted to ask for details, but she was afraid of what she might find out.
She held back, looked out the window, and then unhurriedly changed the subject. “I was thinking of coming to Jingcheng for my master’s degree before.”
“I also remember you saying you wanted to come to Jingcheng for your master’s. Why did you choose Germany in the end?” Huai Xing turned her head and asked seriously. She really didn’t know what had happened.
“The school in Germany was more suitable,” Wen Shiwei gave a disingenuous answer. She had to admit that, at this stage, Chu Wantang held a higher place in Huai Xing’s heart. “My mom also wanted to send me there to train.”
Chu Wantang held the steering wheel, looking as if she were going with the flow. “Auntie Wen is far-sighted.”
Huai Xing deeply agreed. “Auntie Wen has always been sharp in this aspect. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have achieved what she has today.”
Wen Shiwei’s lips twitched. She didn’t say anything more, a bitter taste in her heart.
Half an hour later, the car stopped on the side of the road.
Wen Shiwei got out and said goodbye to them.
Chu Wantang unbuckled her seatbelt, as if she had just remembered. “Welcome to Jingcheng, Wen Shiwei. Xiao Xing and I have prepared a gift for you.” She pressed down on Huai Xing’s shoulder. “You don’t have to get out.”
“What did you buy?”
“Flowers,” Chu Wantang whispered in her ear, in front of Wen Shiwei who was standing by the car.
Huai Xing was surprised. “I didn’t even have time to prepare.”
“She’s your friend.”
Chu Wantang said no more, got out of the car, and opened the trunk.
She wasn’t lying. She had bought flowers in the afternoon and put them in the trunk, but her purpose was not to give flowers.
The moment the trunk opened, besides the flowers, a photo of her and Huai Xing from last night was clearly visible, hanging inside.
She had specifically chosen this photo. She was sitting on the sofa, and Huai Xing was facing her, kneeling on her thighs, only showing her profile as she turned her head.
Behind them was the floor-to-ceiling window, and their silhouettes could still be seen.
The posture was ambiguous and intimate, inseparable.
Wen Shiwei’s lips were tightly pressed together, her eyelashes trembling twice.
Chu Wantang was very satisfied with her reaction. Before picking up the flowers, she first took down the photo. “How did I leave one behind…” She said, putting the photo back in her pocket and handing over the flowers. “Welcome to Jingcheng.”
