Chapter 20 p1
Xu Ling’s hand trembled. What was her intention in saying that? Was she mocking her? Did she think that in a relationship like theirs, there was no need to act so concerned?
“You’re overthinking it. I just can’t stand to see anyone being bullied by mosquitoes,” Xu Ling muttered. “Why haven’t mosquitoes gone extinct yet?”
“Oh, so no matter who gets bitten by mosquitoes, you’ll help them apply medicine?”
“…That’s right.” Xu Ling forced herself to maintain this good-person persona, finishing applying the medicine to her arms and ankles.
So hot. Damn weather, damn mosquitoes, damn Qin Cong’an. I want to blow up the whole world.
Xu Ling took out the preventive spray and frantically sprayed it on her exposed skin.
“It stinks,” Qin Cong’an said, turning her face away.
“It’s not so bad.” Xu Ling was used to the smell and no longer found it unpleasant, but after she said that, she lightened the pressure of her spraying.
When she got to her ankles, she started spraying wildly again. These high-risk areas had to be well-protected. It might not seem like a big deal now, but at bedtime, the itching would be unbearable.
Xu Ling reapplied some on herself. The break was almost over. They went back to burying the body.
When Liang He saw them coming, he quickly said, “Good thing someone saw you go to the car. If no one had seen where you went, and we couldn’t find you, we would have been scared to death. This place is quite remote. Don’t just wander off alone without a word.”
“Sorry.”
“Apologies.”
“It’s fine.” After speaking seriously, Liang He switched to a more mysterious tone. “We scouted this place in advance. We probably won’t run into any bad guys, but that other thing… you never know.”
Liang He thought he could at least scare one of them, but one was expressionless, and the other looked puzzled.
Fine, fine. No sense of accomplishment at all.
He didn’t believe it. Liang He didn’t believe it. They must be pretending not to be scared.
But after Liang He said that, Qin Cong’an suddenly pointed at his arm. He thought there was something behind him and jumped twice in fright.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”
Qin Cong’an pointed at the mosquito bite on his arm and said to Xu Ling, “Director Liang got bitten too.”
Xu Ling: “…”
Just then, Chang Ning clapped her hands and told them to get ready to continue filming.
Xu Ling was very grateful to Chang Ning. It was a good thing they were about to shoot; otherwise, she would have had to apply medicine for Liang He. Now, she just had to hand the medicine to him and let him apply it himself.
Liang He felt a little baffled.
The two actresses put on their headlamps and got to work. No special effects were needed. After just a few shovels of dirt, the sweat on their heads dripped directly onto the ground and soaked into the soil.
It was so humid and stuffy that even a little activity could produce a lot of sweat.
Finally, after filling the pit, Xu Ling didn’t even need to act. She just plopped down on the ground, too tired to move.
Wen Xi checked the details, and after confirming that everything was in order, she walked over to pull Jian Yu up.
Jian Yu was like she was welded to the ground, whining and refusing to get up. “Let’s rest for a bit. I’m exhausted.”
Wen Xi suddenly looked at her with a terrified expression. “H-how did it get out?”
Jian Yu immediately screamed and jumped up, then was pulled away by Wen Xi into the car.
It wasn’t because Jian Yu was young that she was timid. Her courage had never really grown. However, there were a few times later on when she would say she was scared and burrow into Wen Xi’s arms, but that was just an act. And Wen Xi knew it was an act.
For the next few days, it was all night shoots. They would film late into the night and could sleep during the day.
Because it was the first day, Chang Ning was more lenient. After filming one scene, at two in the morning, they wrapped for the day.
After nearly an hour’s drive, they arrived at a hotel in a nearby town—or rather, a guesthouse would be more appropriate.
There was no elevator; they had to carry their own luggage up. Fortunately, a batch of luggage had already been transported over yesterday. The door locks were still keys. The bathroom had no toilet, and the shower facilities were very simple, but at least it was clean. Everyone felt that just having air conditioning was already a great luxury.
“This must be tough for you,” Liang He said to Qin Cong’an.
Qin Cong’an shook her head. “This is very good.”
Liang He knew that although Qin Cong’an was a big star and had a cold demeanor, she didn’t put on airs. No matter how tiring the shoot or how poor the accommodations, she never complained.
But of course, the crew members were even more tired. And unlike the two lead actresses, who could have their own rooms, they were still asking the guesthouse owner to add extra beds to their rooms.
Looking at the size of the guesthouse, Xu Ling knew that even if they booked the whole place, it wouldn’t be enough for the entire crew.
Actually, she didn’t mind sharing a room, as long as it wasn’t the same bed. But she couldn’t bring it up. What if Qin Cong’an didn’t want to? With the two of them being the lead actresses, if one was willing and the other wasn’t, it would make her look like she was trying to be a goody-two-shoes.
Just then, Qin Cong’an looked at her and asked, “Do you mind sharing a room with me?”
Xu Ling was stunned. Huh? The two of them in one room? She had originally imagined sharing with Sister Huai or another crew member.
“I don’t mind,” she answered immediately.
Liang He, standing to the side, was even more surprised. “Really?” After seeing both of them nod in confirmation, he immediately had the owner move a bed to what was originally Xu Ling’s room. With an extra room, everyone could have a little more space.
“Thanks,” Liang He said. “It seems you two really get along well.”
Xu Ling didn’t speak. The last time Director Liang had said that, she had been the one to respond. This time, she wanted to see how Qin Cong’an would handle it.
Qin Cong’an chose not to respond and went upstairs.
Under Liang He’s gaze, Xu Ling gave an awkward laugh. “We’ve run lines together so often, we’ve gotten a bit familiar.”
After saying that, Xu Ling slung her small bag over her shoulder and followed her. When she got to the room, a staff member happened to be coming over with some items.
Qin Cong’an opened the door with a key and went in.
As soon as the door opened, you could see everything in the room: a 1.8-meter bed, two nightstands, a TV, a desk, and a chair. That was it.
The staff member said, “We checked for pinhole cameras in advance. There are none in this guesthouse, so you can rest assured. Um, do you want to add an extra bed? But the extra bed is very small.”
“Should we?” Qin Cong’an asked Xu Ling.
Xu Ling stood at the door, a little flustered. The bed was big enough for two people, but the rest of the space was smaller than she had imagined.
“Let’s not. This is fine,” Xu Ling said with a smile.
The staff member placed the disposable toiletries on the desk. “Director Liang had someone buy a late-night snack. If you’re hungry, you can come and have some. It’s in the room at the very end of this floor.”
“Okay,” Qin Cong’an replied and closed the door. She sat on the edge of the bed and looked at Xu Ling. “Are you really okay with sharing a room with me, or did I put you on the spot?”
“No.” It’s just that my heart is beating a little fast, Xu Ling thought. “I was going to suggest it myself.”
“Suggest what? Sharing with me?”
Xu Ling hesitated for two seconds, then nodded, even though that wasn’t what she had meant.
“Oh.” Qin Cong’an turned her head and touched the slightly rough bedding. “I could tell, that’s why I asked you.”
Tell what? I wasn’t even thinking of sharing with her at that time.
Okay, actually, she had thought about it, but she thought Qin Cong’an wouldn’t agree, so she had thought of other options.
But Qin Cong’an had actually suggested it herself.
Xu Ling didn’t want to answer her. The air felt a little stuffy. She walked to the window and opened it, only to be hit in the face with a blast of hot, humid air.
She was about to close it immediately when something even hotter and more humid pressed against her from behind. Xu Ling instantly felt like she couldn’t breathe.
…What was she doing?
Qin Cong’an quickly let her go, turned and walked to the bathroom, took a look, and then turned back to her with a regretful expression. “It’s so small. It looks like only one person can fit.”
“…” Xu Ling was speechless. “I wasn’t planning on showering with you anyway.”
A bathtub was one thing, but standing and showering together? No, a bathtub wasn’t okay either.
“Oh.” Qin Cong’an was about to close the door. “Then I’ll go first?”
“Mhm.”
Xu Ling also closed the window, turned the air conditioning down a few degrees, and took a few deep breaths to calm herself down. The room was really small, and the more she looked, the smaller it seemed. She was really going to be living here with Qin Cong’an for the next few days.
The bathroom door suddenly opened again. Qin Cong’an poked her head out. “I forgot to get a towel and pajamas.”
Xu Ling was starting to suspect she was doing it on purpose. Why? To seduce her? She couldn’t resist this kind of temptation.
Xu Ling threw the disposable towel and underwear in. They were in packaging anyway, so it didn’t matter if they got wet.
As for the pajamas, she could get them herself when she came out. She didn’t want to go through her luggage. What if she found something she shouldn’t see… After throwing them in, she fled the room as if escaping and went to the room at the end of the hall to find the main group.
She didn’t know why her heart was beating so fast. They had slept together so many times, but this time, the distance was so close, it was as if she and Qin Cong’an were a poor young couple, cohabiting in the master bedroom of a rented apartment.
Xu Ling walked to the room at the end. The door was ajar. She knocked twice for formality and pushed it open.
It was lively inside. Everyone was eating a late-night snack, chatting, and drinking beer. There was a lot of food on the table: barbecue, fried rice, congee, and so on.
Yi Huai was a little surprised to hear that Xu Ling and Qin Cong’an were sharing a room. She had felt that their relationship was a little off in the elevator that morning. And hearing that it was Qin Cong’an who had suggested it made her even more confused.
She still found it strange now, because as soon as she looked at Xu Ling, Xu Ling guiltily averted her gaze.
Liang He started talking about that “other thing” again.
Someone covered their ears, not wanting to listen.
Liang He: “The mood is just right. Can you really resist telling ghost stories? By the way, on set, you must have all encountered something, right?”
A few people’s expressions changed. If they had to say, they really had.
