Chapter 88: What-If Storyline 6
Xu Ling felt like she was picking up her phone in a state of avoidance, wanting to escape this place.
But An sent a message saying: [Sorry, I have to be a little later. Is eleven o’clock okay? If it interferes with your morning class, you should just rest early tonight.]
She couldn’t escape, and this choice was also so difficult. She couldn’t make a decision. She just put down her phone for now and looked at Li Yan, who was clearly not invested in her work. She still couldn’t believe what Yanzi had said. “You’re not joking, are you?”
Li Yan didn’t look up at her, her eyes just a little unfocused. “Does it look like it?”
“…No.” Xu Ling could feel her sincerity. “But, why are you only telling me now?”
“You’re saying, if I had said it before you fell for that person, would it have made a difference?”
Xu Ling was flustered. “I, I, I’ve fallen for her???”
Li Yan’s breath hitched. She suddenly really hated Xu Ling. She was talking about their matters, but Xu Ling’s focus was only on that person, even though just three days ago, Xu Ling had suspected that that person had ill intentions.
It turned out that the length of time didn’t matter at all. Two years of companionship was meaningless compared to a sudden feeling.
Even Xu Ling could sense Li Yan’s low pressure. Mainly, Li Yan had never shown such an indifferent expression before. Even when she had almost flooded the house, Li Yan had smiled and said, “It’s fine.”
“S-sorry… I had no idea you liked me…” Xu Ling’s voice grew softer and softer. She didn’t know if she was explaining or what, pale and weak.
Li Yan knew she had indeed burdened Xu Ling. But even though she had achieved her goal, seeing Xu Ling like this, her heart was not at ease.
“Mhm, then you can just continue to not know. Anyway, I’m leaving too.” Li Yan’s tone returned to its usual, just like an older sister. “Aren’t you going out? Don’t keep people waiting.”
Xu Ling shook her head.
“What’s wrong? Are you considering my feelings? Xu Ling, since you don’t like me, there’s no need for this. It won’t have any comforting effect.”
Xu Ling still didn’t leave. On one hand, she felt it was too heartless to just leave like this. On the other hand, she was thinking, do I really not like Yanzi, and really like An?
She had only known An for less than a week, and they both knew that this was just a brief encounter. They would be parting in a few days.
An couldn’t stay here, and she couldn’t go back to the country in the middle of her studies. Maybe this wasn’t love, just a momentary hormonal impulse.
And she had known Yanzi for two years. As a friend, she naturally liked her. Maybe she just hadn’t looked at Yanzi with the eyes of a lover.
“Not leaving?” Li Yan looked at her with deep eyes. “Then can I understand that you’re not completely without feelings for me?”
Xu Ling was silent for a moment. “Can I say I don’t know?”
Li Yan was silent for even longer. But she knew that Xu Ling was actually just a child. She was only twenty, had never been in a relationship. Usually, when she heard others talk about love, whether it was between the same sex or the opposite sex, she always had a look of amusement, as if she had never thought that love would happen to her.
This was also the reason why she had been hesitant to confess. She knew that Xu Ling would most likely not see her as a romantic partner. She knew it was useless to say it.
It was just that Li Yan had never thought that someone would suddenly appear and, after just one day of meeting, would cause such a drastic change in Xu Ling.
“Then do you want to kiss me?” Li Yan asked.
“Uh.” Xu Ling subconsciously took a step back. Yanzi was very nice, but to kiss her like she had kissed An, it seemed completely impossible. At most, a kiss on the cheek.
Li Yan stood up. “Your answer is very obvious. I’m going back to my room.”
Xu Ling looked at Li Yan’s back as she prepared to go back to her room, still thinking about this question. So she liked to have an intimate relationship that was beyond ordinary with An. Was this liking her? Or was it just liking her body?
Li Yan suddenly stopped and turned her head to look at Xu Ling. “I wish you an unsuccessful relationship.”
“Hmm?” Xu Ling was stunned for a moment, then nodded and said, “Mhm, it will definitely be unsuccessful.”
Li Yan opened her mouth but didn’t say the words. Her feelings were very complicated. She hoped they would be unsuccessful, but she still hoped that Xu Ling wouldn’t get hurt.
Xu Ling didn’t go out. She sent a message to An saying, [Rest early.]
Then she went to take a shower and went to bed early. Her brain was a little overloaded. She didn’t want to do anything now, just wanted to recharge her energy.
Maybe when she woke up, it would be the end of the world. Yay!
When she woke up in the morning, Xu Ling opened her phone and saw a message from An an hour ago.
[I’m flying to Cairo soon. See you in a few days.]
For a moment, Xu Ling didn’t understand what this meant. Didn’t she say she would be in London for a week? This was the sixth day. Why was she leaving?
How many days was a few days? Could they really see each other again?
Cairo? Egypt? What was she going there for?
Last night, An had even asked her if she wanted to go to her place. Why was she suddenly flying off in the morning?
Xu Ling had originally believed every word An had said, but this one, she didn’t believe.
She knew that she and An would be unsuccessful, but she hadn’t expected the unsuccessfulness to come so quickly. If she had known, she would have gone to find her last night no matter what.
Xu Ling didn’t know why her legs were so heavy, so heavy that she couldn’t even get out of bed. She just wanted to sink into the bed, to sleep again, to see if she had woken up the wrong way.
Qin Cong’an had been arranged to attend a private dinner last night at the last minute. The invitation had come from the founder of a certain brand. She didn’t know where he had heard that she had arrived early, so he had sent an invitation.
Qin Cong’an didn’t like to attend such events, but a dinner like this, which was good for her commercial value, was not realistic to completely refuse.
The two of them had a brief chat at the dinner, talking about the exhibits in the British Museum.
The founder’s opinions and views were a little similar to Xu Ling’s. Qin Cong’an just directly used the words she had heard from Xu Ling a few days ago.
So the two of them hit it off almost immediately. The next morning, the other party invited her to another gathering in Cairo, and they would come back together for Fashion Week.
Thanks to Xu Ling, Qin Cong’an was looking forward to thanking her properly after she came back.
Although she had work to do back in the country immediately after her Fashion Week schedule, it wasn’t impossible to squeeze out some free time to see Xu Ling again.
But Qin Cong’an had still underestimated this trip, which was full of uncertainties. She couldn’t find any time at all.
After watching the Fashion Week runway show and attending another gathering, Qin Cong’an rushed to the airport without even having time to linger.
Qin Cong’an could only send another message to Xu Ling in a hurry: [Sorry, it’ll be a few more days. I have to go back to the country for a trip. I’ll come find you again in a while.]
Last time, it had taken a long time for Xu Ling to reply with an “OK” hand gesture emoji. This time, until Qin Cong’an landed in North City, she hadn’t received a reply.
…
“So I was scammed after all!”
In the bar, Xu Ling took a large gulp of gin and tonic and complained crazily to Meng Bai. “I knew she was a bad woman. She was just fishing, just playing with my feelings!”
Meng Bai was enjoying the gossip. “But you didn’t lose out. Weren’t you in love at first sight with her?”
“Pah! I was really blind!”
“Tsk, tsk, I think you deserved it. You didn’t tell me when you were having fun. You only know to find me to complain when you’ve been dumped. Are you treating your sister as a trash can?”
“Wuwuwu, how can you be so heartless—”
“Okay, okay, don’t cry. I don’t have a tissue for your snot,” Meng Bai said, then asked her, “Actually, you should have discussed it with Yanzi. At least she’s eaten two more years of fish and chips than us.”
Xu Ling couldn’t wail anymore. She had indeed discussed it, but she hadn’t listened to the words that told her to be careful. Now, she couldn’t even find Yanzi to discuss it.
Seeing that her mood was off, Meng Bai continued to comfort her. “Thinking on the bright side, at least she didn’t scam you out of your money.”
“I’d rather she had scammed me out of my money.” If money was gone, it was gone. You could earn it back. But if feelings were gone, what could you do?
Before An had left, Xu Ling had really been thinking, do I like An’s body, or do I like An as a person? She had almost come to a conclusion. She felt that she liked both. But in the end… the person had just up and left.
So angry, so angry. It had made her not even in the mood to watch the Fashion Week shows these past few days. She just wanted to hold a bottle of wine and get drunk.
Meng Bai took her words to heart. While Xu Ling was a little drunk, she tricked her. “I treated last time. It should be your turn this time, right? And I was your trash can.”
And so Xu Ling paid for a lot of drinks. It wasn’t until the next night that she realized, and her heart hurt even more.
In her heartbroken state, Xu Ling couldn’t see anything, couldn’t hear anything. She started to stay at home and play games, not even going to class.
Until Meng Bai sent her a picture: [Isn’t this your bad woman?]
Xu Ling threw her game console and stared at her phone for a long time. Although she knew it was her at a glance, what made her not dare to believe it after looking for a long time was the line of small words next to it: Global Brand Ambassador Qin Cong’an.
This brand wasn’t Xu Ling’s favorite, but her closet was not without it.
Global ambassador? An?
Xu Ling had originally suspected that Qin Cong’an was her fake name. Now it was so blatantly on the official poster. She quickly confirmed if this official was the real official, and if there really was a star named Qin Cong’an.
Xu Ling didn’t know much about domestic stars. Because she was busy drawing, she didn’t watch dramas or movies much. But sometimes, she would listen to music while drawing. She had her favorite Chinese singers, but the actors she knew were at least thirty-five and up.
And she had actually met a big star on the streets of a foreign country, and had even slept with her, and had even thought of her as a scammer?
No, no, no. Who said a star couldn’t be a scammer? An was a big star, but she had indeed played with her feelings!
Meng Bai sent another picture: [My god, I just realized she was invited to the show. Why did I only see it now? This big data is not working.]
Xu Ling felt like she had been struck by five thunderbolts. No wonder An had said a week. It turned out she was going to the show.
Meng Bai: [You really lucked out. Really, I advise you not to dwell on this. This kind of fleeting romance, I wouldn’t even dare to dream of it. Just think of it as a beautiful dream.]
Xu Ling both felt that what Meng Bai said made sense and felt that how could she not think about it? But she agreed. This kind of thing really was impossible even in a dream.
While Xu Ling was still in a daze, she received another message that was even more unbelievable than a dream.
An’s message box popped up: [I’m finally back. Where should we meet?]
