Chapter 48
The lights in the room were dim. The fragrance from the aromatherapy on the dressing table diffused faintly, filling every corner of the room.
The heavy breathing of the two people intertwined, and the air was thick with a rich fragrance, the intimacy at its peak.
Shi Qin was pressed beneath her, her hands against Zhou Jinsi’s shoulders, her breathing unsteady, her eyes hazy as she looked at the person on top of her.
The words Zhou Jinsi had just whispered in her ear, though unfinished, carried an unbearable implication that was even more blush-inducing than a direct confession.
Hearing it, Shi Qin’s whole body burned with heat. Fortunately, the lights in the room were not too bright; otherwise, her face would have been seen to be completely flushed.
Before she could speak again, just as Zhou Jinsi was about to bend her knees, she heard a soft cry from the person beneath her.
“No… Zhou Jinsi, really, no.”
Shi Qin’s body was weak, even her voice had softened several tones. She didn’t dare to look into Zhou Jinsi’s fiery eyes, only able to do her best to resist her, to stop her from continuing.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s not…”
Shi Qin lowered her eyes. Zhou Jinsi’s gaze seemed as if it could burn a person, and seeing it, she actually felt a little shy.
“It’s not a convenient time today… you know…”
She finished softly, her tone carrying a hint of apology. After all, she was the one who had started the fire.
Shi Qin hadn’t expected that a small spark would blaze into such a scene.
Feeling guilty, Shi Qin dared even less to look at Zhou Jinsi. Though she didn’t get a reply, the weight on top of her suddenly lightened.
Shi Qin turned her head, and in the dim, unclear light, she looked at the expression of the person beside her, asking hesitantly, “Are you… angry?”
“Angry?” Zhou Jinsi replied in an unreadable tone.
“It’s just… I…” Shi Qin didn’t know how to start. After all, she was inexperienced, and saying those words still made her feel a little shy.
Fortunately, Zhou Jinsi finally stopped being a blockhead and understood her meaning. She turned her head to look at her. “Why would I be angry?”
“Just now, it was me… who didn’t ask clearly about the situation and was a bit impulsive.”
With that, Zhou Jinsi let out another breath, as if to calm her inner turmoil.
Hearing her understanding words, a sweetness couldn’t help but rise in Shi Qin’s heart. She moved her body to the side.
Zhou Jinsi was tall. She could only lean against her thin shoulder, breathing in the faint scent of her body, her eyes tracing the outline of her profile.
“Why aren’t you shy now?”
“You… you really went back and studied?”
Zhou Jinsi saw her little face buried in her shoulder, her eyes full of curiosity. At this moment, Shi Qin was like a child, well-behaved and cute.
She suddenly thought of her students. Although the topic at hand was like this, Zhou Jinsi still couldn’t help but laugh.
For a rare moment, she also said in a joking tone, “Are you looking down on me? I’m an adult, you know.”
“Besides, I’ve done a lot of research on the mating behavior between living creatures.”
“What?” Hearing this, Shi Qin couldn’t stay still. She raised her hand and pinched Zhou Jinsi’s ear. “How can you compare this to animal mating?!”
Zhou Jinsi laughed out loud, then said deliberately, “Strictly speaking, humans are also mammals.”
“Zhou Jinsi, you’re quite the talker, aren’t you?”
Shi Qin’s hand reached under the quilt and pinched the soft flesh of Zhou Jinsi’s waist, causing the other to cry out in pain.
The two of them, one pinching, one dodging, played around for a long while before gradually calming down.
It was already past midnight. As the room grew quiet, Zhou Jinsi felt a wave of sleepiness wash over her again. She closed her eyes, about to fall asleep, when she suddenly remembered she still had something to ask.
Shi Qin was sleeping in her arms. Zhou Jinsi tightened her arm around her waist, unconsciously staring at the light from the small lamp, and asked tentatively in a soft voice, “Besides your sister, do you have any other female cousins?”
“Mmm…” The person in her arms hummed through her nose, soft and sweet.
“You do?”
Zhou Jinsi lowered her eyes to look at her, but after a long time without a response, she belatedly realized that this person was probably asleep.
“Sigh…” Zhou Jinsi held her tighter and sighed softly.
If she has other female relatives, even if not by blood, due to genetic relations, it’s normal for them to look similar. But if not…
If the person in that photo is her, then what kind of story is hidden there?
Sleepiness washed over her, but the doubt in her heart could not be resolved. Coincidentally, the main character of all this stirred restlessly in her arms again.
Zhou Jinsi patted her back soothingly, her movements light and gentle. She looked at Shi Qin’s well-behaved sleeping face, but her inner thoughts became even more complicated…
.
In the same dead of night, Jiang Nuo lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Her mind kept replaying the events at the welfare institute.
Hearing from Wang Yan that that person would come to the institute to ask about Shi Qin’s situation, she didn’t know if the emotion in her heart was more of a sigh, or more of unease.
She didn’t know where that person had heard of Shi Qin’s existence. She had heard that for the past two years, he had been looking for her.
Jiang Nuo hadn’t told Shi Qin about this. Although she knew in her heart that Shi Qin would not have a good attitude toward that person, the thought that this child might leave her…
After so many years of taking care of Shi Qin, she had long since come to see her as her own child.
No, it should be said, as their child…
At this thought, a woman’s face appeared in Jiang Nuo’s mind.
The woman was very blurry in her memory. Sometimes, she had to rely on photos to deepen her memory of her over and over again.
That woman was also extremely beautiful. When she smiled, she was seventy percent similar to Shi Qin, but when she didn’t smile, she had a cold glamour that Shi Qin lacked.
In Jiang Nuo’s heart, she had always been the most beautiful existence.
Jiang Nuo loved her, and resented her.
But those were all long-sealed past events. Now, to talk about them, she probably wouldn’t even know where to start.
Now, the younger generation had grown up. She had also long passed the age of being crazy for love.
But why, when she thought of that person, did her heart still ache?
In the past, she had resented her for being selfish, for leaving without a word, leaving her only child to her. This was also the only thing Jiang Nuo had to hold onto her memory for a long time.
But now, Jiang Nuo resented her even more for not even being willing to come and see her in her dreams.
“Ye Qingnan…”
Jiang Nuo’s lips opened and closed, but no sound came out. Her closed eyelashes began to tremble, and a single clear tear slid from the corner of her eye.
Sensing the tear fall, Jiang Nuo’s lips curved into a self-deprecating smile, her heart filled with an empty sense of loss.
How ridiculous. How old are you, Jiang Nuo, to still be crying for one person.
“Huu…” She let out a shaky breath. The change in her emotions made her breathing become unsteady.
Helplessly, she opened her eyes, wiped away the moisture from the corners, took a box of women’s cigarettes and a lighter from the drawer, and fumbled her way to the windowsill in the dark.
The cigarette was lit. She took a light drag and exhaled. The smoke swirled before her eyes. A breeze blew, and the sour tide of emotion in her heart finally receded.
Ye Qingnan…
She silently repeated that person’s name in her heart again.
I’ve been taking care of the child. Have you seen? She looks quite a bit like you now.
I’ve done everything I promised you. But why… did you still have to leave me…
Nan… you’re so selfish…
What do you want me to do… Nan.
Jiang Nuo stared blankly at the scattered lights outside the window. Another tear fell, but she seemed a little numb to it.
The ember at the tip of the cigarette slowly died out. She pressed it against the windowsill to extinguish it, then took out another cigarette and lit it again.
One extinguished, one lit. She didn’t know how long this action had been repeated.
Just like her intermittent thoughts of a certain person, she only dared to secretly indulge in them in these unclear moments of the night.
.
The next morning.
When Shi Qin woke up, it was already noon. Before her eyes were even open, her hand subconsciously reached for the side.
But there was no expected warmth. The side of the bed was empty.
She frowned and opened her eyes, looking around in a daze, but didn’t see Zhou Jinsi.
She couldn’t have just left because of an emergency, right? There’s no message from her on my phone either.
Anxious, Shi Qin got up. But her slippers were on the other side of the bed. Too lazy to put them on, she got out of bed and went to the living room to look for her.
Just then, Zhou Jinsi came out of the kitchen with a bowl of soup. After putting it down, she noticed Shi Qin’s bare feet on the floor.
“What’s this soup?” Shi Qin smelled the aroma, her eyes fixed on the soup bowl on the table.
Zhou Jinsi didn’t answer her directly. She sighed softly, went into the bedroom, brought out her slippers, and placed them in front of her. “Put on your shoes first. The floor is cold. Why did you come out without shoes?”
Shi Qin obediently put on her shoes. This small act of care from Zhou Jinsi warmed her heart. “When I woke up, there was no one beside me. I thought you had left because of something urgent.”
“Where could I have gone? Have you washed up?”
Shi Qin shook her head.
Zhou Jinsi looked at her, then at the clock on the wall, and sighed helplessly. Why did she suddenly feel like she was taking care of a child?
“Then you go wash up first. This is red date and longan soup I cooked. You can drink it first. I still have to stir-fry two dishes.”
After saying this, she went back to the kitchen to get busy. Shi Qin was still a little dazed as she watched her back.
But before she could even have a drink, Zhou Jinsi had already finished cooking.
When Shi Qin came out after washing up, she saw the small dining table was already full with dishes, soup, and rice. For the first time, she felt that her cold little home had the warmth of a family.
The dishes were all her favorites. Shi Qin had mentioned them unintentionally before, but she hadn’t expected Zhou Jinsi to have remembered them all.
Shi Qin took a bite of eggplant. Zhou Jinsi’s gaze was fixed on her. “Is it okay? I didn’t put too much salt, did I?”
“No, it’s delicious.” Shi Qin told the truth. She hadn’t expected Zhou Jinsi’s cooking skills to be so good.
After a few bites, Shi Qin asked again, “Did you go out to buy groceries this morning?”
Hearing this, a faint smile appeared on Zhou Jinsi’s face. She pointed to the pajamas she was wearing. “Do I look like I went out to buy groceries in this?”
“I ordered delivery from the supermarket. Because I didn’t know when you would wake up, I was afraid it would get cold if I ordered takeout directly.”
With that, Zhou Jinsi looked up and saw Shi Qin silently eating. She couldn’t help but sigh, “I feel like I’m taking care of a child right now.”
Shi Qin swallowed her food and looked at her with a sweet expression. “Then you can only have me as your child. If you find another one…”
“That’s not happening. Taking care of one is enough.”
What’s with that? She’s starting to say sweet things.
Shi Qin lowered her head, trying to suppress the corners of her mouth from crazily turning up, but her heart was filled with an unstoppable sweetness. Zhou Jinsi glanced at her and also lowered her eyes and smiled.
The two of them ate in tacit silence. Before they could finish, a hurried phone ring broke the peace.
Shi Qin saw it was from Jiang Nuo and quickly answered.
“Hello?”
“Qinqin, have you seen today’s trending topics?”
Shi Qin was taken aback. “Huh, no. I just woke up…”
On the other end of the phone, Jiang Nuo sighed.
“Did you take Xiao Si home last night? You guys were secretly photographed.”
