Chapter 24: The Homeroom Teacher of Class 2-1
This was why Yier Meng was so shocked by Wendymia’s self-introduction. The rare pink hair color, however, was indeed the symbol of the royal family of the Kingdom of Alicia.
“There’s no need for such formalities. In a way, we’re allies, you know. My name is Yier Meng Aili Shengguang. I am this generation’s Saintess of the Holy Light Kingdom, and also the future teacher for all of Class 2-1’s practical combat courses.”
But upon hearing Yier Meng’s introduction, Wendymia’s expression seemed to grow troubled. She looked conflicted, as if she were hesitating over whether she should say what was on her mind.
“Um, student Wendymia, is there something you’d like to say to me?” Yier Meng finally had to ask. Otherwise, knowing Wendymia’s personality, who knows how long she would remain stuck in her indecision.
“O… okay.”
Hearing Yier Meng’s words, Wendymia nodded. Her vermilion lips parted slightly as she spoke politely, “Actually, Teacher, our Class 2-1’s practical combat courses are all taken together with other classes.”
Her words were like a giant boulder dropped into a calm lake, setting off a tempest in Yier Meng’s heart.
And Wendymia, completely oblivious to this, didn’t forget to continue, “Or rather, because Class 1 of every year level only has ten students, everyone chooses what they want to learn based on their own abilities and strengths, and then attends classes with students from other sections.”
“If Teacher is the practical combat teacher for Class 2-1, then you will basically only be present once a month, during the all-year grand competition, to supervise the fairness of the matches between the students of each class and offer some guidance for their growth.”
It was like being stabbed, one blow after another. Wendymia’s words pierced Yier Meng’s heart. And then, for good measure, she gave the knife a thoughtful twist.
“I heard that Teacher comes from a rather remote place, and our headmistress… well, everyone knows she’s very capable, but her usual way of doing things is extremely unreliable. So I’m guessing Headmistress Geya didn’t explain it clearly to you. The practical combat teacher for Class 2-1 is essentially the homeroom teacher for all of the year’s Class 1 sections.”
“Actually, saying ‘all of the year’s’ is also a bit of a misstatement. Although everyone in our class enrolled at different times, from first year to fourth year, coming from various kingdoms, we all only arrived last year, one after another.”
She said a great deal in one breath. Wiping away the beads of sweat from her earlier ride, she finally fell silent, as if sighing in relief.
“Why last year?”
Yier Meng seized upon the crucial point of the matter. After hearing everything Wendymia had said, she had finally managed to recover from her shock. But just as she had suspected when she first heard about this class, and when Headmistress Geya had so strongly advised against it, there was definitely something strange about the composition of Class 2-1.
And Wendymia, upon hearing Yier Meng’s question, grew pale. Her small, tired face seemed to recall something terrifying. She squeezed the joints of her fingers, trying to use the stimulus of pain to calm herself down.
“Back then, the Pope of the Holy Light Kingdom repeatedly invited the royal families of our various nations to come, but we all had our own ideas and were unwilling. That is, until the flames of war from the Yeling Empire were ignited, drawing all living kingdoms into the conflict. In order to preserve the bloodlines of the various royal families, we had no choice but to seek refuge in the one place closest to the Goddess of Light’s divine temple—a place that not even high-ranking demons and yeling (Night Spirits) could set foot in.”
As Wendymia spoke, Yier Meng naturally understood what she meant.
