Chapter 32 p1:
—Boom, boom
The explosions came one after another, shaking almost the entire Thirteenth District. The dark tower in the south trembled amidst the blasts, fire and thick smoke billowing from different floors.
Inside the tower, the previous cells had all been blown open. Even though the guards tried desperately to stop them, they were no match for the frenzied prisoners who only wanted to escape. They jumped down recklessly, some even leaping directly from a ten-meter-high platform.
If the prisoners were like this, the mutated beasts were even worse.
In the chaos, the acrid smell of gunpowder and blood mingled. Screams and roars sounded at the same time.
In a narrow office.
Qi Fu shot up in a roll and kicked at the attacker’s face.
The attacker stumbled back three steps, crashing into the wall. The wind from her kick brushed past his mask, revealing only a pair of panicked brown eyes.
Qi Fu’s kick missed. After landing, she took a step back and punched again, her movements swift and ruthless, completely different from the flashy moves in a training room. Every move was learned from life-and-death battles, without any hesitation.
The man had nowhere to retreat. He could only squat down and sweep his leg at Qi Fu.
Her fist hit the wall, creating a crater. But Qi Fu was unharmed. She even jumped to dodge, and in an instant, using the momentum of her jump, she kicked at the attacker like a rabbit.
The creature had nowhere to dodge. He raised his arms and could only take the blow head-on.
But the expected effect did not occur. The forearm that had been kicked with all her might blocked Qi Fu like a bronze wall.
Qi Fu quickly jumped back. The man also took the opportunity to stand up and rush at Qi Fu. As his iron-like arms swung, they actually made a whistling sound.
A dazzling golden light flashed in Qi Fu’s left beast eye. She casually grabbed a meter-high floor lamp beside her and swung it at the other.
The microphone that had fallen to the floor recorded all the sounds of the fight and broadcast them.
On the other side, in Ji Yulin and Li An’s temporary residence.
A burly man grabbed the villa’s security guard by the collar and said sternly, “What did you say? Ji Yulin went to the South Tower with Qi Peilan!”
His expression was grim, changing several times. Finally, he shouted at the others, “Inform the people at the South Tower.”
“We’re going to the South Tower now.”
In a remote corner of the tower.
A person in a black robe pressed a hand against the wall. The seemingly ordinary dark wall showed no change.
But the person beside her looked nervous. The moment the other said “Go,” she immediately scooped the person up in her arms. With a shift of her feet, her speed suddenly increased, and in a second, she had reached ten meters away.
Then, the seemingly ordinary wall actually exploded.
The girl, who was much faster than an ordinary person, relaxed. Just as she was about to say they should leave now, she saw the girl in her arms open her communication device and shake her head, “Ji Yulin is in here.”
“What?”
“We can’t leave yet. We have to find her.”
But before they could move forward, the two of them suddenly swayed.
They vaguely sensed a hint of danger in the white smoke that was seeping out from the surroundings.
“Is this smoke poisonous?!”
It was unclear who had shouted.
The fight in the office continued.
Qi Fu’s iron frame was already bent, but the person in the black robe had no time to press his advantage before his legs gave way.
A golden light flashed in Qi Fu’s eye. As if realizing something, she reached back and opened a desk drawer, grabbing for the gas mask inside.
How could the person in the black robe let her get it? He quickly tried to snatch it.
In the struggle, not only did neither of them manage to put on a mask, but because of their rapid breathing from the intense exercise, they inhaled more of the poisonous gas, and their limbs became as heavy as if they were filled with lead.
The white mist grew thicker, even reflecting a rainbow of snake scales in the sunlight, just like the Dofleinia armata imprisoned at the bottom.
The gas mask fell to the floor. Qi Fu tripped, then stumbled back a few steps and fell to the ground.
The person in the black robe tried to reach for it but fell forward instead.
Qi Fu struggled to stay awake, trying to reach for it, but she couldn’t touch it. Her eyelids drooped several times.
—Bang!
Just then, the door was kicked open. A person in a gas mask, ignoring the mess inside, strode in and walked to Qi Fu. Then he pressed the gas mask in his left hand onto her face and at the same time squeezed the antidote in the mask.
As he did so, the sleeve of his camouflage combat uniform rolled up, revealing a wheat-colored arm.
Qi Fu, with the mask on, took several deep breaths and barely managed to stay awake.
The person didn’t wait for her to recover and immediately asked, “Where’s Professor Ji?”
It was Ling Yun, who had been forced to wait at the main gate due to the South Tower’s rules.
After the explosion, she had rushed over, but because she didn’t know where the professor was, and had heard Qi Fu’s pained cries on the broadcast, she had immediately rushed to the broadcast room.
Qi Fu took a deep breath. Perhaps because of her eye, she quickly suppressed the poison in her body. Desperate to save her mother, she said urgently, “My mom and Professor Ji are at the bottom of the South Tower.”
Ling Yun was about to leave, but Qi Fu grabbed her pant leg.
“Take me. I know the way.”
Ling Yun’s eyes struggled for a moment. In the end, she simply picked up Qi Fu and warned sternly, “Don’t move.”
The moment she finished speaking, she ran out.
Qi Fu was jostled and coughed repeatedly. She still had the mind to be improper and retorted, “With that stiff body of yours, it’s clearly you who’s taking advantage of me.”
In the next second, she said, “This way, it’s closer.”
Ling Yun didn’t answer, just turned her feet and ran for the stairs she had mentioned, without any regard for the person on her back, jostling her even more violently as she ran.
Qi Fu coughed even more violently.
And the situation below was extremely bad. An explosion on any floor would affect the bottom floor.
Bricks fell like meteorites, and iron plates fell one after another. Sometimes, even the corpses of mutated beasts would fall, making a shattering sound. The gray smoke lingered for a long time.
The crack in the thick bulletproof glass grew larger and larger, and finally, a dense spiderweb of cracks spread from the center to the entire glass.
—Bang!
The things piled up on the glass were like a small mountain, and then they were smashed open.
A small hole finally appeared in the center of the spiderweb.
The sea anemone, half-submerged in the seawater, its tentacles coiling and slapping, kept pulling at the chains. A thick mist emanated from its body, pouring out through the cracks.
But the worst was not this.
Ji Yulin and Qi Peilan, on the stairs, had just passed a section when a mutated wolf fell from above.
Fortunately, Ji Yulin was quick-witted and pulled Qi Peilan back a step, avoiding the risk of being crushed.
But after the gray wolf fell, it did not die. It looked at Ji Yulin and the other with bloodshot eyes, a bloodthirsty light in them, and dragged its broken leg toward them step by step.
At the same time, a crackling sound was heard in the tower. It was unclear which circuit had been blown, but it had affected the entire tower.
The remaining electricity barely held for a few seconds, and then it was plunged into darkness. The Sky Net that had been trapping the mutated beasts also completely lost its effect.
It’s over.
The thought popped into everyone’s mind in the tower, and a feeling of despair spread.
The little octopus on her shoulder was in a daze, only feeling a strange anger.
Yes, anger.
Ever since she heard the sea anemone’s voice, a violent rage had been churning inside her, even more intense than when she had faced the darkness.
It was as if she had seen a useless creature she looked down on, who had luckily escaped the slaughter, but now dared to show a covetous feeling toward her when she was weak.
“Mine…”
“…Eat, traitor.”
A tentacle clenched, and her rage grew.
[You, what are you!]
The mist around her grew thicker, almost solid. Even without sunlight, a faint rainbow of scales could be seen, coiling like a venomous snake, hissing in her ear.
If the mutated sunflower pulled people into a dream and then devoured their life force, then the sea anemone was a more naked slaughter, with a deadly poison that entered the body with each breath, followed by a strange hallucination, and then death in a short time.
Qi Peilan knew its characteristics but couldn’t get a gas mask in time. She and Ji Yulin could only cover their mouths and noses with their clothes.
She was also helpless. To guard against the sea anemone’s poison, the guards on the last floor had long since been withdrawn. And she had only planned to take Ji Yulin for a look and leave immediately, but the crisis had erupted at this very moment.
In the darkness, the pair of beast eyes were as bright as lamps, staring straight at Ji Yulin and the other. Even though it was also affected by the poison, it still wanted to rush at the two in front.
Qi Peilan retreated repeatedly, her hand fumbling along the wall, and finally gripped a brick.
She took a deep breath, and her slightly panicked eyes became resolute. She had never thought she would die here, but she would not go down without a fight.
She said in a low voice, “Professor Ji, I’ll distract it. You take the opportunity to run up.”
At these words, even the indifferent Ji Yulin couldn’t help but be surprised.
How long could the unarmed Qi Peilan hold it off? She was prepared to use her own flesh and blood as food for the wolf to buy Ji Yulin a little time to escape.
Fearing that Ji Yulin would hesitate, she added, “Don’t talk anymore. The more poison you inhale, the harder it will be to escape. Go up one floor. There’s an office on the left of the stairs. There’s a gas mask in the drawer of the cabinet, and an antidote by the gills…”
Before she could finish, the wolf had already lunged, the wind it created reeking of blood.
Qi Peilan raised her hand and threw the brick at it, at the same time shouting, “Run!”
A hint of struggle flashed in Ji Yulin’s eyes, as if she were about to do something.
But Qi Peilan didn’t see it. The fear of death had reached its peak, and her wildly beating heart made her mind go blank. But before the brick could land on the wolf’s head, she saw a tentacle swing out from the mist.
A gust of wind brushed past her cheek, leaving a thin line on her side face, and struck the wolf in the face. With a loud crash, the creature was sent flying, embedded in the wall, and died on the spot.
Qi Peilan was not happy but even more panicked, thinking that the tentacle was the sea anemone’s.
“Professor, that thing has escaped! We have to hurry…”
She didn’t finish her sentence before she was wrapped in a tentacle and thrown up.
The force was not as heavy as it had been on the wolf, but it wasn’t light either. It sent Qi Peilan spinning.
Before she could figure out why, she endured the pain and stood up, stumbling toward the office she had mentioned.
As expected of someone who could become the district chief of the Thirteenth District, she was decisive. No matter what danger she faced, she could make a decision immediately.
