Chapter 5:
“Water…”
The murmur was cut off by the tentacle probing deeper. The unconscious person instinctively struggled, turning her head to avoid it, only to be forcefully turned back by the tentacles cupping her cheeks.
Ji Yulin frowned slightly, but compared to her own burning heat, the cool little octopus was like water in a desert, making it impossible for her to resist. She even tilted her head slightly, rubbing her cheek against the chubby tentacle.
“Hot…”
Seeing that she wasn’t getting it, Li An grew more anxious. She had no choice but to press the tentacle down, crushing it between her teeth and tongue. The tentacle, already saturated with coconut juice, released water upon contact. The groggy person let out a muffled “mmph,” finally tasting the flavor she craved.
Her tightly knitted brows relaxed, and her pale, chapped lips finally gained a hint of moisture. She began to suck unconsciously, trying to get more.
The tentacle resting on her collarbone inexplicably retreated. The little octopus’s expression became a bit strange. It was clearly she who was forcing Ji Yulin to do this, yet now that she was, Li An felt a little awkward.
Her overly sensitive nervous system wasn’t just for pain; in the sea, she could even feel the gentle currents.
Let alone now.
The tentacle tried to escape, but it was held tighter. The scorching body temperature enveloped it, sucking and licking. She could even clearly feel the papillae on the tongue, gently hooking into her suckers.
How strange.
The little octopus stiffened. She wanted to retreat but couldn’t. Her only hope was that Ji Yulin would drink faster.
But the tentacles, with their vague consciousness, didn’t seem to think so. It was as if they had found a space narrower and more comfortable than the jar, and they couldn’t stop sending waves of elation.
Want… comfortable…
Want to go in… squeeze it all in…
Like it…
The childish voice was direct and joyful, uncontrollably defying the main brain’s commands. The suckers clung to the tip of her tongue, inching their way in.
…Want more.
The feeling of craving was even stronger than Ji Yulin’s.
Her slightly relaxed brows furrowed again. Ji Yulin was forced to tilt her head back, her thin lips parting wider. The area around her mouth was wet with water and dotted with red marks of varying shades. Her proud and elegant face looked disheveled, tinged with a hint of decadent beauty.
“Mmph…” The unconscious person made a helpless sound, as if trying to struggle, but was soothed by the sweet juice.
The red sun sank lower, the wind grew stronger, and the sound of the waves became more pronounced. Before one wave could recede, another crashed ashore, foaming in the sand.
It took Li An a long moment to come to her senses. She hurriedly tried to pull the tentacle back.
But the tentacle had worked so hard to squeeze in that far; it was unwilling to come out. It hooked Ji Yulin’s tongue, conveying its resistance.
…Don’t want to, don’t want to go out.
Want to be in there, deeper inside.
Li An was sweating with anxiety. Before she could even manage this tentacle, the others started throwing a tantrum, as if accusing Li An of favoritism.
…Want to go in, all want to go in.
Together… want to make a fuss… angry.
Comfortable, want to be comfortable.
The protests were incessant, completely ignoring Li An’s resistance, especially the severed tentacle, which was making the biggest fuss.
Li An could only try to soothe them over and over, but what good did that do?
After that one tentacle once again sent a wave of pleasure, the other tentacles completely lost control and all pushed upward.
Want to go in… all want to go in, all of them.
Mine… it’s mine.
Like children fighting over a lollipop, the childish voices even had a hint of a sob.
Li An’s mind was in even more of a mess. On one hand, she felt like a bully picking on a child; on the other, she felt like a pervert taking advantage of someone’s vulnerability. But Ji Yulin didn’t seem to feel anything. It was Li An who was being tormented.
Fortunately, the coconut juice in the tentacle was finished. Li An gave a hard tug, tumbling down in a heap. She took a moment to console herself, promising each tentacle a chance to feed her water, and only then did she manage to completely calm herself down.
By the time she finished feeding her the water, it was dusk. Seeing that Ji Yulin still hadn’t woken up, Li An was out of ideas. She could only haul some coconut leaves from the woods and cover Ji Yulin with them.
It wasn’t that she was thinking about keeping her warm. Ji Yulin herself was as hot as a fireball, and the diving suit also had excellent insulation, so Li An didn’t need to worry.
It was just that after the incident with the mutated seagull, she felt uneasy, afraid that other mutated birds might target Ji Yulin, so she used the leaves as a cover.
As for Li An, she first took a dip in the sea. After soaking herself from a hot octopus back into a cool little octopus, she pulled a leaf over herself and settled onto Ji Yulin’s forehead.
The moon paled and the stars faded. The night passed without incident. After the tide receded, the coast returned to its tranquility.
By the time Li An woke up, it was already noon.
Sensing a different texture beneath her tentacles, the little octopus jolted. She opened her eyes and looked around.
It was still the same familiar beach, but her position had moved from the shore to beneath the trees. The little octopus had been placed back inside her glass jar.
Li An was stunned for a moment. She turned her head and saw Ji Yulin sitting beside her. If one could ignore the scattered red marks around her lips, her complexion was much better than it had been yesterday.
And the coconut that Li An had struggled so hard to crack open yesterday was now split in two in her hands, and she was using a small knife to carve out the white flesh.
Li An’s expression relaxed. Having an appetite was a good sign. She immediately propped herself up on seven tentacles and pulled herself out of the glass jar.
The person beside her looked over at some point, and seeing the little octopus about to emerge, she extended her hand.
Li An took the opportunity and crawled into her palm.
Her arm bent, shortening the distance between the human and the octopus.
Ji Yulin’s eyelids were lowered, her gaze falling upon the little octopus. She said lightly, “Good afternoon.”
Li An was a bit dazed. She had imagined Ji Yulin would question her or thank her, but she never expected the other woman to simply say ‘Good afternoon,’ as if they had known each other for a long time, and this was just an ordinary afternoon. No escape, no life-or-death struggle—everything was perfectly normal.
Her sapphire-like eyes were filled with confusion, but she couldn’t ask out loud. In the end, she could only point a tentacle at Ji Yulin’s head and then form a question mark with it.
She wanted to ask how Ji Yulin was doing.
The crude sign language was obscure; anyone not intimately familiar with her would have been unable to decipher it so quickly. Yet Ji Yulin seemed to understand it instantly and replied.
“The fever’s gone,” she said, her voice still a bit hoarse. Her long, disheveled hair had been loosely tied up, and the diving suit had been replaced with a gray shirt and pants, buttoned to the very top. For a moment, Li An was in a daze, almost thinking they were back in the laboratory.
Wait, where did these clothes come from?
Her tentacle involuntarily formed a question mark. Li An’s eyes were full of confusion. Although she hadn’t explored thoroughly yesterday, she had given the surroundings a general look and was sure that no supplies had washed ashore with them. That was why she had resorted to using the rough coconut leaves.
Ji Yulin pressed her lips together, once again understanding and explaining, “I just took a look around the island and found a suitcase that had washed up.”
Such a coincidence?
The doubt in Li An’s heart didn’t dissipate. She had felt something was off from the very beginning. She had a nagging feeling that Ji Yulin knew long in advance that the darkness would appear, which was why she was already wearing a diving suit in the cabin, why she wasn’t panicked when she fell into the water, and why she went straight for the speedboat. And now, there were even these clothes that had appeared out of nowhere.
Ji Yulin’s expression remained neutral as she continued, “The suitcase only had one set of regular clothes and a small knife. Later, we can walk along the coastline and see if there are any other useful supplies.”
She added, “All four large ships were wrecked, so there should be quite a few more suitcases washing up. We might be here for a long time, until a rescue team finds us, so what we have now is far too little.”
Is that so?
Li An’s suspicion didn’t lessen, but on second thought, if the other woman had known in advance, she shouldn’t have prepared so little. What could one set of clothes and a small knife do?
No, that’s not right either. If she had known beforehand, how could she have ended up in this situation? Even if she couldn’t prevent the disaster, Ji Yulin should have stayed on shore. After all, this clearing mission had nothing to do with her; she was just there to select experimental samples.
Perhaps it really was an accident?
Her blue eyes looked Ji Yulin up and down. She hadn’t noticed before, but the shirt was actually a very poor fit. The shoulder seams were tight, the hem was too short, and there were even still-damp patches on the fabric, clinging to Ji Yulin’s waist and abdomen, rising and falling with each breath.
Li An thought again. There would have been a lot of luggage on the four ships, especially from the clearing squads. Almost everyone would have brought a suitcase to quickly change out of their diving suits and into regular clothes.
So, with that many people’s suitcases, it was normal for Ji Yulin to find one or two, right?
Before Li An could think further, Ji Yulin offered her a slice of carved coconut flesh and asked calmly, “Can you eat this?”
Li An’s brain instantly stalled, like a stiff gear that only turned after a long moment. She finally felt a pang of hunger.
What do octopuses eat again? Fish, shrimp, crabs? And shellfish, I think… So they should be carnivores. They probably can’t eat coconut flesh, right? But she was a mutated octopus. What if she could?
Li An’s eyes glazed over. Only now did she notice her hunger. After blinking a few times, she still couldn’t resist the coconut flesh before her and tentatively extended a tentacle.
Ji Yulin acted as if she hadn’t seen her hesitation. Her outstretched hand remained steady. Her eyelids were half-lowered, obscuring her view of the little octopus, but her fingers trembled slightly as the tentacle slid past her fingertips.
Li An didn’t notice. She hooked the coveted piece of coconut, took a tentative bite, and felt no rejection from her body. She could even taste the sweet flavor of the coconut.
So yummy!
Her sapphire-like eyes lit up. The little octopus, who had been a bit listless just a moment ago, immediately perked up and devoured the coconut flesh in a few quick bites.
After transmigrating into a little octopus, besides survival, Li An’s biggest worry was what she could eat.
Sensing Li An’s cheerful mood, her seven tentacles swayed unconsciously.
A rare smile flashed across Ji Yulin’s face, and she offered another piece.
This time, there was no hesitation. A tentacle immediately hooked the coconut flesh.
But after eating several pieces, Li An realized her hunger hadn’t diminished at all, as if she hadn’t eaten anything.
The little octopus’s eyes blinked, her expression bewildered and helpless.
Does this mean I can taste it, but I can’t convert the coconut flesh into energy?
No wonder my tentacles had no desire for the coconut juice when I was feeding Ji Yulin yesterday.
The little octopus instantly deflated. A tentacle pushed away Ji Yulin’s outstretched hand and listlessly pointed at Ji Yulin herself.
She was telling her to eat it herself and not to worry about her.
They hadn’t found any other food yet. It was useless for her to eat it; it was better to let Ji Yulin have more.
Ji Yulin didn’t say much in response. Seeing that Li An wouldn’t eat, she simply placed her back in the glass jar and said in a steady voice, “Let’s go look around.”
The little octopus didn’t resist and followed obediently.
The human and the octopus searched for half a day, but they didn’t encounter such luck again. The coast was empty. In the end, they returned to where they started.
Afterward, Ji Yulin led her into the woods. After walking for about half an hour, she faintly spotted a small path trampled by animals. Following it for another ten minutes or so, they unexpectedly came across a clear stream.
Ji Yulin and Li An both breathed a sigh of relief. Many of their problems were now solved. But…
Another problem also emerged.
The little octopus froze, staring helplessly at Ji Yulin’s reflection in the water.
Her bad deeds had been discovered!
