Chapter 12: Caught Her

As the object flew out, the two Progenitors that had been searching nearby instantly rushed over, running and jumping. The nearby Mutants, as if smelling something, also immediately followed.

After the Mutants had moved away, Wan Feng quickly got out from under the car. She only had time to make a gesture to those behind her before leading Xiao Hou forward at a brisk pace.

After getting out from under their cars and seeing Wan Feng’s signal, Zhang Can’er and the others quickly bent down and followed closely behind, striding toward a house in front of them.

They had to take advantage of the commotion over there to get to the house in one go. The remaining distance wasn’t long, and the group soon arrived outside a courtyard.

Wan Feng leaped up onto it in a single bound. She saw a double-leaf iron gate wide open, and inside the courtyard stood three Mutants. Although she could have dealt with them all herself, she didn’t want to reveal too much of her strength. So, she jumped down from the wall and explained the basic situation inside to the others who had come up behind her.

The group hid in a large tree. The situation had been urgent just now; Mutants that had heard their footsteps were heading toward them. They had no choice but to find a tree and climb it. Then, Zhang Can’er sacrificed a kitchen cleaver, throwing it onto a car by the side of the road, which finally gave the group a chance to catch their breath.

After Wan Feng explained what she had scouted, the group unanimously decided to charge in and get into the courtyard first.

Zhang Can’er glanced at her phone and saw that it was almost twelve o’clock. It had taken them nearly two hours to get here from the mountain. Before the apocalypse, she probably could have walked it in less than half an hour.

After eating, the group rested for a short while, then climbed down from the large tree and walked toward the concrete wall. Wan Feng went up first, then pulled the others up.

The top of the wall was very narrow, and on top of that, there was a row of glass shards. The group was extremely careful after getting up.

The three Mutants inside the courtyard, sensing the movement, started heading toward them. But because they didn’t smell any living creatures, they weren’t sure if it was food. So, they only walked over slowly, accompanied by low growls.

The group all subconsciously swallowed, looking nervously at the Mutants below. They gripped their weapons tightly, continuously encouraging themselves in their hearts.

It wasn’t the first time Xiao Feng and the others had encountered Mutants, so they were somewhat confident. But it was Zhang Can’er’s first time encountering such things. She was so nervous that her legs were a bit weak.

Although the task Xiao Feng and the others had assigned her was to close the iron gate, Zhang Can’er was still very nervous. Firstly, she was afraid something would happen to her companions. Secondly, she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to close the gate in time and would end up dragging everyone down.

But the arrow was on the bowstring; it had to be fired.

Wan Feng was the first to jump down, and the others followed her. As soon as they got close, the Mutants smelled living creatures and roared as they lunged at them.

Zhang Can’er also quickly ran to the courtyard gate and hurriedly closed it. But as soon as she closed the gate, the Mutants from the roadside began to ram it like crazy.

Fortunately, Zhang Can’er closed it in time and retreated quickly. Seeing the courtyard gate shaking from the impact, she was a bit worried it wouldn’t hold.

Looking back, she saw that the other six were still fighting the three Mutants. The main problem was that their weapons couldn’t harm these Mutants, and they had to prevent themselves from being scratched.

Although it was two against one, it was still a bit of a struggle.

Zhang Can’er quickly took out the Hardened Vine Seeds she had made earlier. She first threw one toward Xiao Li and Xiao Hao, then mentally pressed the skill button.

The vine grew rapidly, piercing through the Mutant’s body and pinning it in place.

Xiao Li and Xiao Hao quickly seized the opportunity, coming from behind the Mutant and hacking at its neck.

Zhang Can’er didn’t stop, doing the same to the other two Mutants.

But after she was done, the dizziness in her head grew heavier and heavier. Her body gradually couldn’t support itself and was about to fall.

After dealing with the Mutant, Wan Feng turned her head and saw Zhang Can’er’s body about to collapse. She quickly flew over and caught her.

With no time to think, the group hurriedly pushed open the main door of the house and entered the living room.

After Xiao Feng closed the main door, she didn’t go to check on Zhang Can’er first. Instead, she had the others search all the rooms to see if there were any other Mutants.

The first thing Wan Feng did upon entering was to sweep everything off the table onto the floor, then place Zhang Can’er on the long table.

Zhang Can’er had fallen into a deep sleep and wouldn’t be waking up for a while.

Wan Feng briefly checked her body. After finding no wounds, she joined Xiao Feng and the others in searching the entire house.

Finding no more Mutants, the group breathed a sigh of relief. Then, they gathered all the food and water.

And Xiao Hou, because the bag with the fish was thrown away, found a new one. He hadn’t expected this family to have a travel backpack. This kind of backpack had a large capacity and was more convenient than ordinary backpacks.

So, after taking out the food they were going to eat, the group stuffed everything else into the travel backpack.

This family had a lot of snacks, and children’s toys could be seen everywhere, so they guessed that these snacks were probably for the children. They also found a box of milk and a box of instant noodles in a bedroom.

This made the group incredibly excited. For the past two days, apart from that fish feast, they had been surviving on snacks or chewing on one or two smoked fish sticks. They had never been full. With instant noodles, they were willing to eat them dry. They didn’t want to touch those snacks again, and the fishy smell of the fish sticks was a bit strong. They wouldn’t eat them unless they were extremely hungry.

After packing all the instant noodles into Xiao Hou’s travel backpack, the group finally sat down to rest for a while.

The roars outside gradually subsided, but Wan Feng didn’t dare to let her guard down. She would periodically look at the situation outside through the glass on the door. She was worried that the noise here would attract the two Progenitors from before.

After resting enough, Wan Feng arranged for them to block the stairs, moving all the furniture onto the staircase to seal the upstairs exit. A utility room and a bedroom downstairs were also sealed with tables and cabinets.

This way, only a kitchen and a living room were left on the first floor. They wouldn’t all have to stand guard at night and could take turns sleeping for a while.

When Zhang Can’er woke up, the sky had completely darkened. In early June, the weather was still a bit cold at night, so Xiao Feng and the others had taken all the bedsheets and quilts from the bedrooms beforehand.

They also covered Zhang Can’er with an air-conditioning quilt and placed a thick quilt under her, afraid she would get cold. The others made pallets on the living room floor to make do for the night.
