Chapter 40: The Black Shadow
Wan Feng stood beside her, not participating in the discussion with the others. She felt that these discussions were meaningless, but she didn’t stop them. She just wanted to know when Zhang Can’er would speak up.
Hearing Zhang Can’er’s words, Xiao Feng’s pretty brow furrowed. “What did we forget?”
Xiao Feng was still brainstorming when Xiao Li had a sudden realization. “Oh! Sister Can’er has Invisibility Carrots! Tsk, the situation was so urgent just now, and everyone was scared. We didn’t even think of it.”
Hearing Xiao Li’s words, the others seemed to wake up, which made them all a bit embarrassed.
“Oh, come on. We were woken up in the middle of the night. How could we remember so many things? All we could think about was escaping from here quickly. We just didn’t think of it,” Xiao Feng explained with a red face, seeing the smile in Zhang Can’er’s eyes.
Zhang Can’er withdrew her gaze and took out the carrots.
Then she took out a grain of rice in her own hand, wanting to try it later.
After eating the carrots, the group all went down from the house, found a place with few Mutants, and slipped out.
Zhang Can’er was the last to leave. With a wave of the hand holding the grain of rice, a strong wind carrying rain swept all the Mutants in front of them dozens of meters away.
Zhang Can’er’s eyes held a hint of shock. Although this thing didn’t cause any substantial damage to the Mutants, its control effect was excellent.
The Mutants that had been blown over still hadn’t gotten up. And she felt that this rain was not ordinary either, but she would probably have to ask Ru Xi about the specifics.
Zhang Can’er turned her head and saw that the others in front were all looking at her. She had thought they had all left.
“I’ll explain later. Let’s leave this place first.”
The group didn’t delay any longer. Traveling at night, their vision was obstructed, so Xiao Li released the wolves and had them lead the way.
When the sky was slightly bright, the group saw the tall city walls in the distance. There were soldiers patrolling with flashlights on top, but the distance was too great, and they could only see some light.
The group was a bit excited and all wanted to enter Starshine City as soon as possible, so their pace quickened a lot, except for Xiao Hao, of course.
Zhang Can’er was about to go and comfort him, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw something moving in the grass. Before she could see what it was, she saw a black shadow pounce at Wan Feng. Her reaction was also extremely fast. She lunged forward and pushed Wan Feng to the ground.
And she was already holding a grain of rice in her hand. She got up and waved it backward. The black shadow was swept away by a strong wind and flew far away.
Zhang Can’er didn’t have time to check on Wan Feng. She got up and walked not far from the black shadow. Only then did she see clearly that it was a Mutant from who knows where.
It was still a bit dark now, and the Mutant’s whole body was bluish-black, so she could only make out a human shape. She had thought someone was ambushing them.
Seeing that it was a Mutant, Zhang Can’er breathed a sigh of relief.
She took out a Fire Chili Seed and burned the Mutant that was lying on the ground, unable to get up.
When she returned to Wan Feng’s side and saw her still sitting on the ground, she hurried over. The others had already gathered around.
“What’s wrong? Did I hurt you just now by being too forceful?” Zhang Can’er asked anxiously.
Wan Feng looked up at her. Actually, she had already been prepared to fight just now, but she hadn’t expected Zhang Can’er’s reaction to be so fast.
She was used to being alone. Seeing that everyone had their own friends, their own teammates, she had actually been a bit disdainful. Because she had always felt that having one more person around was just one more burden. But Zhang Can’er’s rescue just now made her feel that her past self had been terribly wrong.
It was as if something in her heart had changed. A warm current, like a rampaging warrior, was about to shatter the city walls she had built.
She shook her head and looked at Zhang Can’er. “I’m fine. I was just scared. I need to calm down.”
Only she knew if she was really scared.
But Zhang Can’er wouldn’t doubt it. Just as Wan Feng had thought, she was held in her arms, her back being gently patted by Zhang Can’er’s hand.
It was as if something was about to break through the soil.
“I’m fine now. Let’s continue on our way.”
“Are you really fine?” Zhang Can’er was still a bit worried. The incident had happened so suddenly. If she hadn’t noticed the movement in the grass, Wan Feng might have been pounced on by that Mutant. If she had been scratched, Zhang Can’er didn’t know what she would have done.
“I’m really fine,” Wan Feng smiled.
Seeing her smile, Zhang Can’er finally breathed a sigh of relief. To be able to smile meant that Wan Feng had really recovered. After all, this person rarely smiled like this.
She’s so beautiful when she smiles.
Zhang Can’er forced herself to withdraw her gaze and glanced at the others beside her. “Let’s continue on our way.”
Xiao Feng looked at Zhang Can’er, hesitating, wanting to say something but not daring to. The others were in a similar state. But Zhang Can’er didn’t see it. Her eyes were only on Wan Feng now, and her heart was also concerned about Wan Feng.
After helping Wan Feng up, she held her hand and didn’t let go. Mainly, she was also a bit scared, but she just hadn’t shown it just now.
The group looked at their clasped hands but said nothing in the end. If they were together, then they were together. Although Wan Feng still had many secrets, who could blame Zhang Can’er for liking her?
When the sky was bright, the group saw the city walls not far away. After walking for about half an hour, they finally reached the foot of the city walls.
At the tall red metal city gate, many people were already queuing up. There were basically no Mutants on the main road nearby.
Xiao Feng looked at the tall city gate, her eyes filled with curiosity. The others were the same.
Only Xiao Hao kept his head down, not speaking, not curious.
Zhang Can’er was a bit worried. Along the way, Xiao Hao had barely spoken, his personality becoming even more sullen.
Feeling that something was strange, just as she was about to ask if something was wrong, Wan Feng’s voice came over.
“These city walls are all built with red metal. The texture is very hard. Ordinary artillery fire can’t break this wall. Compared to black metal, red metal is rarer and more expensive. To build a two-story villa with red metal would probably cost tens of millions of Starshine Coins,” Wan Feng’s voice was soft and not loud. Only the few people around her could hear.
“Tens, tens of millions? Just for a two-story villa, it costs tens of millions? This red metal is really not something an ordinary person can afford,” Xiao Feng said in shock.
Wan Feng nodded. “Red metal is hard and has a strong durability. Things built with it won’t decay for a thousand years. And its resistance to natural disasters is also very strong. It can withstand floods and earthquakes without any damage, so the price is also very high.”
“No wonder. Those rich people would probably be scrambling to buy it,” Xiao An nodded.
Zhang Can’er looked at the eloquent Wan Feng, a barely perceptible smile in her eyes. This was the second time she had heard Wan Feng say so much.
The inspection in front was very fast. It only took about ten minutes to reach their group. The person in charge of the inspection was a woman in a military uniform.
The woman had a heroic look. Her medium-short hair was tied up, making her face look even more three-dimensional. Coupled with her good overall features, many survivors couldn’t help but take a few more glances.
