Chapter 15: Can’t We Be in the Ambiguous Phase?

After blow-drying her hair, Hua Man didn’t leave right away. Instead, she took out her phone. “Could you please leave me your contact information?”

Yang Zhao didn’t like how she kept calling her “you” so formally, but she didn’t mention it this time. Instead, she gave Hua Man a meaningful look. “What for? My contact info isn’t something I hand out lightly.”

How long had she been by her side already? Asking for it now seemed a bit too late, didn’t it?

Yang Zhao naturally had to play it coy, lest Hua Man think anyone could just get her number.

“It’s not convenient,” Hua Man said. She had no idea that the eldest miss had completely misunderstood her intentions and explained earnestly, “Sometimes you leave, and I can’t find you.”

Yang Zhao furrowed her brows.

After a long moment, she spoke coldly. “If you can’t find me, that’s your failure.”

Hua Man was stumped. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with that logic. She really had failed in her duties.

But tomorrow they’d be outdoors, where anything could happen. She absolutely needed the eldest miss’s contact information.

She tried to persuade her. “This is just in case. There will be so many people tomorrow. I’m worried we’ll get separated.”

“As long as you care, how could we get separated?”

Yang Zhao wouldn’t let it go.

Hua Man fell silent and looked steadily at the eldest miss, who stared right back without backing down, like a little pufferfish puffed up with indignation.

Remembering how she’d treated her before, Hua Man suddenly had an inspiration. Hesitantly, she tested the waters. “Actually, everything I just said was an excuse. The truth is, I want your contact info for myself.”

Yang Zhao raised an eyebrow.

She quieted down, and the atmosphere grew a bit awkward. Hua Man’s face heated up instantly, but she’d already committed halfway to the act, so she had to see it through. She was racking her brains for what to say next when her phone was snatched away.

“Fine,” Yang Zhao said, her mood clearly brightening. “Since you want it that badly, I’ll give it to you reluctantly.”

She sounded so reluctant, but the smile at the corners of her eyes was impossible to hide.

Hua Man’s gaze flickered.

It seemed she’d found a way to coax the eldest miss.

The next day at four in the morning, Hua Man followed the eldest miss to the event site.

The Wilderness Archery Competition was held in the vast Stone Forest Scenic Area. The eldest miss had gotten up especially early to watch the sunrise here.

It was Hua Man’s first time seeing such a beautiful sunrise. When the golden light pierced through the thin mist, every corner of the land was dyed gold, and the bizarre stone formations were shrouded in a mystical golden veil.

She instinctively glanced at the eldest miss.

The eldest miss was gazing up intently. The usual aggressive arrogance had softened, her fair face bathed in gold, her features gentled.

The sunrise was beautiful, but the eldest miss watching it intently seemed even more so.

“Beautiful, right?” Yang Zhao turned her head.

Hua Man immediately looked away, pretending to gaze into the distance. “Beautiful.”

“Right?” Yang Zhao didn’t notice anything off. They were standing high up with a great view. Looking at the vast expanse of dawn clouds in the distance, she raised her hand as if cradling that golden light in her palm. “Every time I watch the sunrise, I feel like I’ve been reborn.”

“Sometimes it feels like my heart gets purified.”

Hua Man didn’t have quite as many profound feelings as the eldest miss. She just thought the sunrise was pretty, nothing more. But hearing that last sentence, she perked up. “Really?”

If her heart was purified, she probably wouldn’t cause any more trouble, right?

Yang Zhao nodded. “Of course. I feel full of vitality, like I could tear apart ten people with my bare hands. I’m not afraid of anything.”

Hua Man: “…”

Was that how hearts got purified?

The red clouds gradually faded, dawn breaking across the sky. Yang Zhao turned without lingering and headed downhill. “Back to the car.”

It was still early; they could rest more in the car.

The path was littered with small stones, the ground uneven. Yang Zhao walked quickly and twisted her ankle after just a few steps, her body tilting sideways as she nearly fell.

She didn’t even have time to cry out before an arm caught her in the crook of her elbow, steadying her firmly.

Hua Man frowned. “Be careful.”

She didn’t let go, gripping the eldest miss’s arm, her attention focused on the footing below.

Yang Zhao pulled her gaze back, but she found it hard to concentrate on descending the mountain. Her eyes kept drifting to her own arm, to the hand supporting her.

She’d noticed it a few times before, but she really seemed to like physical contact with Hua Man. When they weren’t touching, it felt like ants crawling in her heart. When they did touch, it was an indescribable thrill.

More exhilarating than jumping from ten thousand feet in the sky.

It was addictive, making her crave more contact.

Like a pervert.

Reaching that conclusion, Yang Zhao couldn’t help but chuckle.

Feeling the person beside her look over, Yang Zhao met her eyes and deliberately drawled, “Manman… Don’t you think we look like we’re eloping right now?”

“Or like a pair of lovers fleeing disaster?”

The moment the words left her mouth, the supporting hand was ruthlessly withdrawn.

Hua Man’s tone was heavy. “No.”

Yang Zhao laughed. “If you don’t think so, why do you sound so guilty? Just hold me up openly.”

With that, she extended her own hand.

In the sunlight, that arm like white jade looked almost translucent. Hua Man took a deep breath and gripped it again.

With the Yang family paying her such a high salary, she couldn’t slack off.

If the eldest miss got hurt again, forget Yu Shan—she’d think herself useless.

Fortunately, they made it down without incident.

The Wilderness Competition’s opening ceremony started at eight-thirty. Hua Man’s seat was right next to the eldest miss’s. The eldest miss clearly had no interest in the archery dances and kept fiddling with her bow.

Hua Man watched attentively; it was her first time seeing this kind of performance. It was unique and shocking.

The show ended in under half an hour, and things got underway.

Targets were scattered throughout the scenic area, allowing contestants to enjoy the views while competing—a clever format.

Hua Man had only learned the basics, so she was just there to make up numbers and scored nothing noteworthy. The eldest miss, however, dominated from the start. No matter the environment or distance, she hit her targets flawlessly.

Yang Zhao’s archery prowess drew attention, and by lunchtime, many came over asking for her contact info.

Unfortunately, Yang Zhao was already tired from the morning and irritated by the interruptions ruining her meal. Her expression darkened. She held back at first, but as it escalated, she was about to snap. Hua Man quickly intervened. “Sorry, I can’t give you her contact info.”

Yang Zhao glanced at her instinctively.

“Are you two girlfriends?” the person assumed.

It wasn’t the first misunderstanding. They’d stuck together all morning, even eating together, looking intimate.

Especially since Yang Zhao wouldn’t let Hua Man act too obviously as a bodyguard.

Hua Man denied it immediately. “No.”

The person’s face filled with disdain. “If you’re not, what right do you have to—”

Before they finished, Yang Zhao interrupted impatiently. “Can’t we be in the ambiguous phase? Get lost!”

She was so blunt.

Hua Man ignored the content of her words and stayed vigilant in case the person lashed out over the eldest miss’s rudeness.

Fortunately, they just grumbled and left, still cursing “dead lesbians” and “shameless” from afar.

In today’s society, though fairly open, not everyone accepted same-sex relationships; some still viewed them through tinted glasses.

Hua Man vaguely felt the eldest miss liked women, though she had no solid proof.

With that thought, she glanced at the eldest miss again.

Their eyes met once more.

Hua Man’s heart raced, and she quickly looked away.

It seemed every time she looked at the eldest miss, the eldest miss was looking back at her.

Maybe that was the evidence.

Proof that the eldest miss liked women.

“I think the girlfriend role is pretty good,” Yang Zhao said casually.

Hua Man clenched her jaw. “I think friend is sufficient.”

“How is that enough?” Yang Zhao raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you hear what that person said? If you’re not my girlfriend, what right do you have to reject them for me?”

She declared it unilaterally. “From now on, we’re girlfriends.”

Hua Man: “…”

She was always so domineering.

It made sense, given her environment—everyone probably obeyed her every word. Her personality wasn’t surprising.

“When we go out from now on, use that identity.” Worried the blockhead Hua Man wouldn’t get it, Yang Zhao added, “I mean the super possessive, dominant girlfriend type. If someone hits on me, you swoop in right away. Got it?”

“…Got it.”

Though Hua Man felt uncomfortable everywhere, the role did make handling things easier later, especially dealing with Yang Zhao’s admirers—far fewer hassles.

At first, Hua Man felt awkward and lacked confidence, but she got used to it over time.

It was embarrassing, but better her brushing them off than the eldest miss offending people and starting fights.

“What’s a beauty like you hiding back here for?”

A voice suddenly rang out. The newcomer had a head full of dirty braids, exaggerated earrings, and even a lip piercing.

Hua Man immediately thought of the delinquent girls she’d seen before.

The tone wasn’t right—sounded like trouble. If Yang Zhao faced off with her, it’d explode.

She instinctively stepped in front of Yang Zhao. “She has a girlfriend.”

Li Miaohe froze, then burst out laughing. “Yang Zhao! When did you get such a jealous girlfriend? Guarding you like a dog with food!”

Hua Man stiffened.

The braided girl obviously knew the eldest miss, and there was no strong hostility, so probably a friend…

Recalling her own words, Hua Man mentally dug out a whole villa in regret.

[Psycho Eldest Miss × Rigid Bodyguard] Rumors had it that the Yang Family's Eldest Miss possessed a twisted personality—both mad and eccentric—to the point where she had amassed a horde of enemies, necessitating the hiring of a personal bodyguard. However, the Eldest Miss was exceedingly picky; almost no one could tolerate her bizarre temper. The Yang Family, in their desperation, unexpectedly learned that Hua Man, the daughter from their nanny's hometown, was the national judo champion—excellent in both academics and character, with a gentle temperament. They immediately sent someone to bring her over. In public, the mad-dog-like Eldest Miss seemed leashed by Hua Man. Whenever the Eldest Miss threw a tantrum, Hua Man would count coldly with a stern face, and the Eldest Miss would compromise after she had only reached three. No one knew that behind closed doors, the Eldest Miss pinned Hua Man beneath her, biting her collarbone and murmuring softly, "You said it—as long as I obediently listen, you'll kiss me three times..." The Eldest Miss remained that same lunatic, but now her madness was directed solely at her. It intensified, spiraling gradually out of control. "Baby, I was very good today." "If you get that close to her, I won't be able to stop myself from kissing you in front of everyone, baby." "You're mine."
