Chapter 18: Candy
Ye Qizhen always considered others’ feelings first, often preferring to wrong herself. That was why she was surprisingly popular; everyone liked her attentiveness and thoughtfulness, but few noticed that she also got down and needed comfort…
But Wen Yu would notice.
Would care for her when she needed it.
This was also why she cared about Wen Yu so much. Precisely because she cared, she didn’t want Wen Yu to be angry because of her.
“Don’t be angry with me anymore.” Ye Qizhen stared intently at Wen Yu and whispered again.
Wen Yu had never been coaxed like this before. Hearing Ye Qizhen’s soft whispers and seeing her sincere yet aggrieved eyes, she didn’t know how to react.
Although learning that Ye Qizhen was helping Tang Xiao pursue her made her quite uncomfortable, the words she said to Ye Qizhen last time were also harsh.
Does this person have no temper?
Doesn’t she get angry?
Wen Yu realized her words to Ye Qizhen had been excessive. Or rather, she had realized it that night when Ye Qizhen was crying and apologizing to her. It was just that she was used to saying “it doesn’t matter” and didn’t know how to bow her head. She admitted that saying “it doesn’t matter” was just her sulking at Ye Qizhen; if it really didn’t matter, she wouldn’t have acted like that.
The bus finally queued onto the cross-river bridge, merging into the dragon-like stream of traffic, moving forward slowly.
Ye Qizhen stuffed the biscuits into Wen Yu’s hand, feeling that she was being even more pestering than Tang Xiao right now. She continued to say to Wen Yu, “Eat a little. It’s still more than half an hour until we arrive. If your blood sugar drops later, it will be even more uncomfortable.”
Wen Yu squeezed the biscuits in her hand. With Ye Qizhen acting like this, how could she stay angry? Seeing Ye Qizhen crying non-stop that night, she already felt she had spoken too harshly. In front of Ye Qizhen, she brought the biscuit to her mouth and took a small bite.
Finally willing to acknowledge me. Ye Qizhen immediately grinned, breathing a sigh of relief. At this moment, the morning sun pierced through the mist and shone through the glass window, landing right on her face. She narrowed her eyes, the dimples on her cheeks prominent.
Wen Yu looked at Ye Qizhen, chewing the biscuit slowly, thinking, Is this person silly? She had been scolded to tears by her that night, yet today she was coaxing her like this.
She didn’t quite understand.
Why is she so good to me?
If she wanted to make friends, there were plenty of people with better personalities and tempers than her.
The window was open a crack, and the morning breeze blew in, damp and cool, fresh with the scent of sunlight. Ye Qizhen’s hair was blown into her eyes, and she closed them directly.
Seeing this, Wen Yu raised her hand to tuck Ye Qizhen’s hair back for her, her movements gentle and careful.
Ye Qizhen opened her eyes and saw Wen Yu’s long, slender fingers playing with her hair, fingertips gently brushing against her forehead. Deciding to be thick-skinned to the end today, she didn’t do it herself but lazily tilted her head towards Wen Yu.
Wen Yu understood and was amused by Ye Qizhen’s small gesture. She tidied Ye Qizhen’s hair while laughing.
Although no words were spoken, through this interaction, Ye Qizhen could confirm that Wen Yu was no longer angry with her. And the way Wen Yu looked down and smiled made it hard for her to look away; it was too pleasing to the eye.
Seeing that Wen Yu had finished the biscuit, Ye Qizhen took the opportunity to push her luck: “Since you ate my biscuit, you can’t ignore me anymore.”
Afraid of disturbing others, she kept her voice very low, soft and gentle, a bit like acting coquettishly.
Listening to this remark, Wen Yu just smiled.
“What are you laughing at?” Ye Qizhen whispered.
“Why didn’t you say that eating your biscuit makes me yours?” Wen Yu asked leisurely.
Thinking of how many people wanted to pursue Wen Yu, Ye Qizhen smiled playfully. “If you’re willing, I won’t lose out.”
Wen Yu gazed at Ye Qizhen, her eyes not dodging in the slightest, and said frankly, “Quite willing.”
Caught off guard, Ye Qizhen was speechless. Meeting Wen Yu’s gaze at close range, her thoughts went astray. Wen Yu’s eyes were beautiful, seemingly born affectionate, capable of flirting…
Too good at it.
Why be so good at flirting with girls?
Because of Wen Yu, Ye Qizhen was really starting to suspect she wasn’t very straight. She often felt an indescribable ambiguity, an ambiguity she never felt when interacting with boys.
An expected reaction. Wen Yu smiled slyly, then lazily looked out at the river surface outside the window. How could she have thought Ye Qizhen was interested in her before? Turns out she was helping a friend chase her.
What was I thinking?
Also, why be disappointed…
Inexplicable.
They were about to get off the bridge soon, and the bus speed gradually picked up. Ye Qizhen saw Wen Yu was silent. “Feeling unwell?”
Wen Yu shook her head lightly.
“Eat a bit more.” Ye Qizhen said, taking another biscuit out of her bag, and grabbing a box of milk as well.
Wen Yu found it incredible. “Do you have everything?”
“Guess what my roommates call me?”
“What?”
“Ye·Doraemon·Qizhen.”
Wen Yu laughed uncontrollably; very fitting, very cute.
While joking, Ye Qizhen had already inserted the straw into the milk and stuffed it into Wen Yu’s hand.
“If I drink it, what will you drink?”
“I already drank.” Ye Qizhen lied.
“Brought so much?”
“Drink when I want to.” Ye Qizhen continued to fib.
“Like drinking milk that much?” Wen Yu refreshed her understanding once again, reasonably suspecting Ye Qizhen’s bag was full of food.
“…” Ye Qizhen was helpless. She thought that in Wen Yu’s eyes, she was probably a crybaby who could eat and drink a lot. Image completely gone.
Sitting together, occasionally chatting a few sentences, the dozen or so stops didn’t feel too hard to endure.
Charity tutoring was a long-standing public welfare project of Z University, with activity centers in more than a dozen communities across the city. Most participants were freshmen and sophomores, as they had relatively ample free time.
This was the first activity of the new semester, so it was busy. The morning was basically spent setting up the activity center and cleaning, and students only came in the afternoon. Although called an activity center, it was actually a simple large room with old tables, chairs, and benches. Most of the students were primary school children from families with poor conditions; parents were busy making a living and had no time to accompany them on weekends.
The original intention of charity tutoring wasn’t to help these children improve their grades significantly, but more for companionship and guidance. Ye Qizhen felt it was quite meaningful, so she signed up. She was still surprised that Wen Yu would participate; she thought Wen Yu preferred solitude, and participating in this meant interacting with quite a few people.
What surprised Ye Qizhen even more was that Wen Yu was exceptionally gentle and patient when teaching children, despite being such a proud person usually. They were in charge of second-grade girls. The two little girls were classmates, very shy, and insisted on sitting together.
“…Understood? Teacher will give a similar question. If you get it right, I’ll give you a small reward.” Ye Qizhen liked children and was very good at coaxing them, having a whole set of tricks.
“Teacher, what reward?” The shy little girl became bolder and took the initiative to ask.
“You’ll know if you get it right.”
Beside her, Wen Yu turned her head to glance at Ye Qizhen and smiled. She knew what the reward was without thinking.
Children fell for this trick. They wrote with indescribable seriousness, and even checked it once after calculating before showing it to Ye Qizhen. Seeing the correct answer, Ye Qizhen praised her, asked the girl to extend her hand, then fished something out of her pocket and placed it in her palm.
The little girl opened her palm and immediately broke into a smile. It was a rabbit-shaped candy, exquisite and cute, the kind children liked at first sight. “Thank you, Teacher~”
Wen Yu saw it. Mn, guessed right, it’s food.
“You’re welcome.” Ye Qizhen patted the little one’s head. Seeing the child on Wen Yu’s side looking on enviously, she took out another one and gave it over.
“How many do you actually have?” Like magic. Wen Yu looked at Ye Qizhen and asked.
Ye Qizhen gazed quietly at Wen Yu. After a moment, she touched Wen Yu’s hand inconspicuously under the desk, and then, she secretly stuffed something into Wen Yu’s palm.
When Wen Yu accepted it, her palm brushed lightly against Ye Qizhen’s, feeling warm.
“All gone.” Ye Qizhen smiled and said, then continued to lower her head to help the child with homework.
Wen Yu clenched the candy in her hand, quietly watching Ye Qizhen’s sweet smile as she lowered her head. Suddenly she wondered, If I could have met Ye Qizhen earlier, would I be a little happier…
