Chapter 40: Early Summer
Wen Yu’s voice wasn’t loud, just enough for the two of them to hear, like secretly telling a secret hidden deep in her heart.
People who love to smile are often praised as sweet; a standard description. Ye Qizhen was often called sweet, nothing special about it. But when Wen Yu said it, it felt distinctly different. Because of Wen Yu’s softened voice and close face, the tip of her heart itched.
Quietly locking eyes with Wen Yu for a while, Ye Qizhen didn’t answer. Her smile bloomed even more brilliantly involuntarily, and the dimples on her cheeks deepened, even though her eyes still held undried tears.
Wen Yu also curled her lips. She always felt Ye Qizhen was someone with stars in her eyes—bright, sunny, and forever enthusiastic. She had felt this way since they first met in high school, before she even knew Ye Qizhen’s name.
Neither was willing to pull away, so while smiling at each other, they maintained this intimate posture.
Ye Qizhen liked watching Wen Yu smile, especially like this right now, a smile that only held her in its eyes. And her hope that Wen Yu also had improper thoughts about her expanded infinitely at this moment.
“Crybaby,” Wen Yu stared at Ye Qizhen’s wet, long eyelashes, “Cried enough?”
Ye Qizhen was embarrassed. Clearly, she was supposed to comfort Wen Yu, but now Wen Yu was comforting her. However, she was quite happy to hear Wen Yu call her crybaby. Wen Yu only called her that when they were alone—private and intimate.
“Wen Yu.”
“What?”
“…You can not care about the past, but you have to care about the present and the future.” After thinking it over, Ye Qizhen still said seriously to Wen Yu. Current life shouldn’t be wrapped up by the past. She worried about Wen Yu’s state and hoped Wen Yu could be truly happy.
Wen Yu understood Ye Qizhen’s meaning. It was precisely her indifference that, to some extent, deepened the misunderstanding and prejudice from the outside world. It was like a vicious circle, and she didn’t care to escape it.
“We both look forward.” When Ye Qizhen said this, her palm gently held the back of Wen Yu’s hand, her eyes firm when she smiled. People often said she was a little sun. She felt she was just a bit gentler to people, not selfless enough to want to warm everyone. But she wanted to warm Wen Yu, willing to spend any amount of effort.
“Mn.” Look forward. Will you be there ahead? Staring at Ye Qizhen, Wen Yu couldn’t help thinking. She was no longer satisfied with Ye Qizhen simply accompanying her; her heart was full of wanting more.
The crisp sound of bicycle bells came from not far away. Two girls rode past together, accompanied by low laughter, their figures light as the wind.
Seeing this, Ye Qizhen asked Wen Yu enthusiastically, “Can you ride a bicycle?”
Wen Yu couldn’t. When she was little, seeing other kids learning to ride in groups, she had been envious. But at some point, she didn’t even have that envy anymore.
“Take you for a ride.” Ye Qizhen pulled Wen Yu up. When she was upset, she liked to ride a bicycle around aimlessly. Quietly catching the wind could blow away a lot of frustration.
Wen Yu agreed; whatever Ye Qizhen said was fine.
Ye Qizhen went back to the dorm first to borrow a bike from Luo Bei. Luo Bei had won a bicycle in a lucky draw when recharging phone credit at the beginning of the semester.
“Hop on.” Ye Qizhen patted the back seat.
“Are you sure you can carry me?” After sitting on it, Wen Yu looked at Ye Qizhen’s frame with doubt.
“No problem, I’ve carried people heavier than you.”
Hearing Ye Qizhen say this, Wen Yu immediately asked, “Really? Who else have you carried?”
“Tang Sweetie.” Ye Qizhen answered.
“Who is Tang Sweetie?” Wen Yu pressed.
“It’s Tang Tang…” Ye Qizhen explained. Wen Yu’s unusual focus completely led the conversation astray. She could feel Wen Yu’s possessiveness towards her, but couldn’t figure out if it was that kind—it seemed like it, yet not.
Wen Yu stopped talking.
“Sit tight.” Ye Qizhen gripped the handlebars, pedaled hard, and the bicycle moved forward.
The streetlights were warm yellow, and the camphor trees on both sides of the road retreated. Wen Yu was still thinking about what Ye Qizhen just said. The next moment, she wrapped her arms around Ye Qizhen’s waist, her body pressing tightly against Ye Qizhen’s back. I want Ye Qizhen to treat me differently…
In an instant, Ye Qizhen almost lost her balance, and the bicycle wobbled noticeably. Wen Yu hugged so tightly, tight enough to feel her softness on her back, and the rise and fall of her breathing.
When the bicycle wobbled, Wen Yu naturally took the opportunity to hug Ye Qizhen even tighter, whispering in Ye Qizhen’s ear: “No strength? Am I heavy?”
“Not heavy.” Wen Yu hugging her like this and talking to her like this made Ye Qizhen thoroughly immersed. “You are so thin, need to eat more.”
“Mn.” Wen Yu hummed. The wind blew Ye Qizhen’s hair up, brushing against her cheek seemingly intentionally or unintentionally. She closed her eyes and smelled a fresh and elegant fragrance. The wind also carried the scent of early summer—gentle, reserved, yet hiding passion.
Closing her eyes and hugging Ye Qizhen, Wen Yu felt like she was floating. Ye Qizhen dragged her into another world; the warmth and heartbeat were so real. Just moving forward like this, letting the wind blow away the past, the road ahead brand new.
Z University at night was a different scenery. Wandering around on a bicycle was a very pleasant and comfortable thing. Especially with the person you like.
Wen Yu’s arms never let go of Ye Qizhen. “Put me down if you’re tired.”
“Not tired.” Ye Qizhen said with a smile. Perhaps a long, long time later, she would remember that for the girl she liked to hug her a little longer, she pedaled the bicycle until her legs almost broke that night.
Circling the school once, finally, the two found a patch of grass to sit and rest. Ye Qizhen held an ice cream bought when passing a convenience store. Wen Yu didn’t like sweets, so she didn’t get one.
“Want to taste?” Ye Qizhen just opened the package and offered it to Wen Yu first, asking her.
Wen Yu shook her head.
Ye Qizhen ate it herself.
After a while, seeing Ye Qizhen eating with relish, Wen Yu said, “Give me a bite too.”
Ye Qizhen was helpless: “Offered it just now and you didn’t want it? I’ve eaten it down to this.”
Wen Yu blinked, then looked at the ice cream again.
Ye Qizhen couldn’t refuse and obediently offered it. She watched Wen Yu open her lips and gently take a sip right where she had bitten.
It was during the third period of evening classes, so there weren’t many people around, except for a man and a woman sitting not far away. Judging by their intimate appearance, they were definitely a couple.
Those two seemed not to notice anyone else here. After flirting for a while, they pressed lips together and started kissing, quite passionately and heatedly. Ye Qizhen’s gaze swept over inadvertently, feeling quite embarrassed.
Wen Yu saw it too. She stole a glance at Ye Qizhen… seemingly finding that feeling of envying others again. She turned back and asked Ye Qizhen with a smile, “Envying again?”
“What are you talking about.” Seeing that scene with Wen Yu made Ye Qizhen feel even more awkward. Although she was indeed envious deep down, she was too embarrassed to say it out loud.
A few seconds later.
“What does kissing feel like?” Wen Yu didn’t know why she asked Ye Qizhen such a sentence.
Ye Qizhen looked at the grass, feeling even more uneasy. Discussing the topic of kissing with Wen Yu made her dazed. She laughed dryly, “How would I know…”
“Aren’t you curious?” Wen Yu asked slowly again.
“I… will know when I have it.” Ye Qizhen answered absentmindedly, finishing the last bite of ice cream.
At their age, especially having never experienced it, saying they weren’t curious about these things would be a lie; imagination ran wild. Saying this, Ye Qizhen’s mind was full of scenes of kissing Wen Yu, which had happened in dreams. Actually, she also really wanted to know what kissing Wen Yu felt like—
Tang Tang said kissing the person you like felt like losing yourself, but she felt that just being slightly flirted with by Wen Yu, she was already about to lose herself.
Wen Yu didn’t continue, and Ye Qizhen was quiet too. The somewhat sudden chat ended somewhat suddenly. But the silence at this time still made the atmosphere ambiguous.
Ye Qizhen looked at the night sky at the right time and whispered, “There are stars, tomorrow should be sunny again…”
Wen Yu just leaned close to Ye Qizhen and used a tissue to wipe the corner of her mouth. After wiping, her lowered gaze lingered briefly on Ye Qizhen’s lips.
The words in Ye Qizhen’s mouth stopped abruptly, catching this look from Wen Yu. Closer, and their cheeks would almost touch.
Sometimes action really precedes the brain. Just like now, without any preparation, they closed the distance in unison. Subtle movements brought their nose tips almost rubbing together…
The familiar bell signaling the end of class came from the distant teaching building, ringing again and again. The two were unmoved, still staring at each other intently. Until the sound of chatting beside them gradually became clear, Wen Yu tilted her head slightly, the tip of her nose inadvertently brushing past Ye Qizhen’s ear, then squinted and simply rested her head on Ye Qizhen’s shoulder.
Ye Qizhen’s breathing was disordered, an urge ready to burst out. She turned sideways abruptly, pulled Wen Yu into her arms, another action preceding the brain. Wen Yu was stunned briefly, then muffledly accepted Ye Qizhen’s embrace, seeking warmth once again.
Even though more people were passing by, they still hugged each other tacitly, as if no one else was around.
Heart near the position of the heart. Ye Qizhen didn’t know if Wen Yu could feel her violent heartbeat; every beat was an involuntary, silent confession.
Another gust of wind blew.
“Wearing so thin, are you cold?” Ye Qizhen felt Wen Yu’s hand was a bit cold. Nancheng in May had a large temperature difference between day and night; it was still cool when the temperature dropped at night.
“Cold. Hug me a while longer.”
