Chapter 89: IF Line – High School (Part 2)
The temperature rose, and the sun became scorching.
Ye Qizhen stood up dazed, saying to Wen Yu absentmindedly, “Let’s go eat breakfast.”
Teasing her made her blush even more. Looking at Ye Qizhen’s figure against the light, Wen Yu couldn’t look away; she felt that Ye Qizhen was doubly interesting when blushing.
Seeing Wen Yu dawdling and not getting up, Ye Qizhen extended her hand to Wen Yu. “Let’s go.”
Wen Yu looked at the palm Ye Qizhen extended, hesitated for half a second, then reached out and held it.
Palm warmed, Ye Qizhen used a little force, and Wen Yu got up with the momentum, standing in front of her. She originally wanted to let go, but at this moment, Wen Yu pulled her straight forward.
Wen Yu didn’t let go of Ye Qizhen’s hand, walking silently. She had no one close to her, nor was she willing to be close to anyone. But with Ye Qizhen, whether it was the hug she just tried or holding hands now, she never tired of it.
Eating breakfast together after morning runs had been their routine these past few days. Today, they ate tossed noodles at a noodle shop in a small alley.
As soon as the noodles were served, Ye Qizhen tossed them impatiently. After tossing them well, she pushed the noodle bowl in front of Wen Yu and said with a smile, “Done.”
Wen Yu didn’t react. “What’s wrong?”
Ye Qizhen was slightly embarrassed. Was she being too proactive and enthusiastic? She smiled and said, “Eat while it’s hot.”
Only then did Wen Yu realize she was tossing the noodles for her. No wonder she didn’t react; after all, she had never been taken care of like this. She ate a small mouthful of noodles silently; her appetite was unprecedentedly good today.
Ye Qizhen also took a mouthful of noodles and chewed contentedly, full of flavor.
As hard as the morning run was, eating breakfast was that happy. Wen Yu had never seen anyone more gluttonous than Ye Qizhen.
Ye Qizhen had never seen anyone who disliked eating more than Wen Yu. These past few days for breakfast, when she asked Wen Yu what she wanted to eat, Wen Yu always said “whatever.” Clearly living nearby, yet not knowing what delicious food was around. Except when focused on painting, Wen Yu seemed to have little interest in anything.
“Is it tasty?” Ye Qizhen asked Wen Yu, only satisfied with an affirmative answer.
“Tasty.” Wen Yu cooperated very well.
Ye Qizhen continued to eat noodles with her head down. Her appetite increased greatly after exercise, and she was even more gluttonous, eating with exceptional relish.
Wen Yu couldn’t help but let out a light laugh.
Ye Qizhen caught this scene. “Why are you laughing at me?”
Wen Yu said bluntly: “Cute.”
Is that a compliment? Ye Qizhen was about to be embarrassed again.
Wen Yu had never been interested in food, but these days, what she looked forward to most was Ye Qizhen taking her to eat different breakfasts every day.
The summer morning run plan didn’t say when it would end. She suddenly worried that Ye Qizhen would say she didn’t want to run one day…
For the next two days, Ye Qizhen still met her on time. Usually, they would eat together and then go their separate ways.
This day, after finishing breakfast and walking in the alley.
Wen Yu turned to look at Ye Qizhen and said abruptly, “My foot seems to hurt a little.”
Ye Qizhen’s first reaction: “From running?”
Wen Yu made it up on the spot: “Don’t know, twisted it.”
A sprain could be big or small. Ye Qizhen was worried. “Does it hurt a lot? Want to go to the hospital?”
Wen Yu: “Not to that extent.”
Ye Qizhen: “I’ll walk you back.”
Wen Yu looked at her: “Mn.”
Since she said her foot was uncomfortable, Wen Yu had to slow down her walking speed, making it look real.
The two walked through the familiar alley bathed in morning light. After more than ten minutes, they returned to the old house.
Ye Qizhen carefully helped Wen Yu sit on the sofa. “Where does it hurt?”
Wen Yu continued to make it up: “Ankle.”
Ye Qizhen couldn’t see anything with her naked eye. “Really okay? If it hurts a lot, you should still go get it checked.”
Wen Yu explained: “Not that serious.”
Ye Qizhen was slightly relieved. “Do you have ice at home? Can apply an ice pack.”
Wen Yu shook her head.
“Should have bought an ice pack downstairs just now.” Ye Qizhen muttered, “I’ll go down and buy one now. Wait for me, I’ll be back soon.”
“No need.” Wen Yu stopped her.
“It’s okay, applying it will make it more comfortable.” Ye Qizhen wasn’t just saying it; she turned and hurried downstairs.
Wen Yu was left alone on the sofa, staring at the door in a daze. Is this necessary? Just so she can stay with me a little longer.
It was very hot outside now.
Ye Qizhen ran to several places before buying an ice pack. When she returned, a thin layer of sweat beaded on her forehead, her cheeks flushed red.
Didn’t even take a breath.
“Here?” Ye Qizhen squatted down, wrapped the ice pack in a towel, and applied it to Wen Yu’s ankle.
Wen Yu’s heart was filled with emotion. She pulled Ye Qizhen. “Don’t squat.”
Ye Qizhen sat on the sofa next to Wen Yu, then rested Wen Yu’s calf on her own lap and continued to apply the compress. “Better?”
“Mn, I’ll do it myself.”
“It’s okay.”
They were both wearing sports hot pants. Their equally fair legs rubbed against each other, hot skin touching lightly.
Applying the compress to Wen Yu’s ankle, Ye Qizhen wasn’t entirely focused, thinking: How can even an ankle be so good-looking?
Wen Yu’s heart wasn’t as natural as on the surface either. After letting Ye Qizhen apply it for a while, “Doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Ye Qizhen put down the ice pack.
Wen Yu said, “You don’t have to stay and take care of me. You can leave first if you have something to do.”
Ye Qizhen: “I have no tutoring today.”
“Don’t need to go out with friends?” Wen Yu asked slowly again. Ye Qizhen wasn’t like her; she never lacked friends, she knew this in her heart.
“Aren’t you a friend?”
Wen Yu lowered her head and revealed a smile.
“Looks like we can’t run for a few days.” Ye Qizhen looked at Wen Yu’s foot.
“So you’re happy,” Wen Yu said instead, “Don’t want to run with me anymore?”
“No way.” Ye Qizhen whispered softly, “You have to rest. Run again when your foot is better.”
Wen Yu: “My foot is fine, I can run.”
Ye Qizhen: “Still not honest when you’re injured! You’re not allowed to run secretly either.”
Wen Yu was helpless and wanted to laugh. Even when scolding people, Ye Qizhen still had a harmless posture. How did she do it? She pursed her lips lightly. “Ye Qizhen.”
Ye Qizhen looked at Wen Yu’s face.
Wen Yu asked tentatively, “Still eating breakfast together?”
Asking this means she wants to be with me, right? Clearly needing company, yet stubbornly saying she’s used to being alone that day… Ye Qizhen pursed her lips in a smile. She vaguely discovered that Wen Yu seemed to like meeting her too.
Seeing Ye Qizhen not answering immediately, Wen Yu changed to a light and breezy tone: “It’s okay if you’re not free.”
Ye Qizhen blurted out: “I’m free!”
Wen Yu observed Ye Qizhen’s reaction and got the answer she wanted.
“How much of the summer homework have you done?” Ye Qizhen found something to chat about.
“Not much.” Wen Yu looked at Ye Qizhen and said, “Some math problems I don’t know, can I ask you?”
“Of course.” Ye Qizhen agreed too readily, which seemed a bit wrong. She added, “But I might not know either.”
Wen Yu saw through it with one sentence: “Still being modest with a score of 148.”
Ye Qizhen grasped the key point and was a little smug. “Student Wen, you pay so much attention to me?”
Wen Yu was righteous: “Not allowed?”
Ye Qizhen answered obediently: “Allowed.” After speaking, she grinned, suddenly very happy.
Wen Yu was sweetened by Ye Qizhen’s smile and smiled too. This summer, a completely different summer.
The entire summer vacation, Ye Qizhen and Wen Yu spent more time together. They finished their homework almost together.
Wen Yu liked listening to Ye Qizhen explain problems—patiently, never getting annoyed after several times, and explaining with different methods. When close, listening to Ye Qizhen’s voice, she would occasionally get distracted. Asking Ye Qizhen to teach her problems, the wine lover’s heart was not in the cup to begin with.
“So hard.”
“Clearly you were distracted just now.”
“Was I?”
“Yes, you were looking at me.”
Wen Yu continued to look at her. “Then you were distracted too.”
Ye Qizhen couldn’t refute.
Play aside, Wen Yu only teased Ye Qizhen occasionally. Most of the time, her attitude was proper. She also liked watching Ye Qizhen when she was serious, so meticulous that… it made one’s heart flutter.
Several sets of test papers, chilled watermelon, orange soda—that was their summer vacation.
Two people sitting side by side at the desk by the window, half a day passed unknowingly.
Not necessarily doing problems all the time. Sometimes Ye Qizhen was reading, and Wen Yu was painting. They could be quiet without saying a word, yet not feel awkward.
Probably this was compatibility.
Tired of reading, Ye Qizhen lay on the desk, watching Wen Yu sitting in front of the easel painting, watching Wen Yu’s beautiful fingers holding the pen to outline beautiful lines. She could watch forever, never getting tired.
Her gaze would sometimes secretly land on Wen Yu’s profile, exquisite nose bridge, and thin lips. All her attention was unconsciously attracted.
She had never been so attracted to a boy…
Pressing on the book, Ye Qizhen’s cheek rested on her arm, drowsy. Her eyelashes trembled a few times and then lowered.
Wen Yu finished painting and got up, seeing this scene. She pulled a chair and sat on the other side of the long table, also lying on the desk, gazing at Ye Qizhen’s fair and delicate cheek.
Ye Qizhen’s dozing appearance was very quiet, looking softer than usual.
Wen Yu reached out and tidied a strand of hair blocking Ye Qizhen’s face, tucking it behind her ear. When her fingers touched the ear, she couldn’t help but gently pinch her earlobe.
Her gaze landed on her brows and eyes, like a paintbrush, tracing finely bit by bit, silently immersed.
Ye Qizhen didn’t fall into a deep sleep, woken by the small movements. She opened her sleepy eyes and saw Wen Yu also lying beside her, looking at her, childishly rubbing her ear. The place her fingertips touched was ticklish, but she didn’t dodge.
Couldn’t tell if she was awake or dazed at the moment. They opened their eyes and looked at each other, but didn’t speak, just looking at the other.
A bit silly.
Her ears were burning. Ye Qizhen felt it was more because Wen Yu was staring at her.
The glass window isolated the noise outside. No wind today, air quiet, sun quiet, leaves quiet, even the birds perching on the branches were quiet.
Everything was quiet.
But her heart, which should have been calm as water, seemed to have a stone thrown into it, rippling in circles, endlessly.
She looked at Wen Yu, always feeling Wen Yu was the same as her.
“Itchy~” After looking at each other for a long time, Ye Qizhen finally remembered to tell Wen Yu. The words had been hidden in her throat for too long; once spoken, they were sticky and coquettish.
Wen Yu smiled lazily, not wanting to move her fingertips.
Time was also made lazy by her smile.
Ye Qizhen was lazy, resting her chin on the old desk, lying and chatting with her. “Have you thought about which university you want to go to in the future?”
They had just finished freshman year; discussing this seemed a bit early.
“You’ve thought about it?” Wen Yu asked Ye Qizhen back. She had no plan, no direction, just living numbly.
“I want to go to Z University.” Ye Qizhen’s goal had always been clear. “I want to major in journalism and be a reporter in the future.”
Wen Yu seemed to see stars in Ye Qizhen’s eyes that she had never seen before. She looked into Ye Qizhen’s eyes and repeated in a low voice, “Z University?”
Ye Qizhen nodded softly: “Mn.”
