Chapter 17: A Sword’s Startling Appearance
“Put my Little Senior Sister down!”
Qingtong wanted to follow, but the mountain path in front of her collapsed with a roar, kicking up a cloud of dust.
In just a few breaths, Ning Ruoque had already avoided the rubble and dirt, carrying Yin Buran with one hand, and leaped to another mountain path.
Qingtong saw it clearly. Yin Buran, clinging to Ning Ruoque’s back, was trying her best to prop herself up, wanting to protect her hairpin that was about to slip off amidst the bumps.
However, Ning Ruoque spun around to dodge a broken wooden board, and Yin Buran’s originally tied-up white hair instantly came loose.
She was stunned for a moment, unable to even blink.
After a moment of thought, she simply gave up struggling. She obediently clung to Ning Ruoque, like a cotton doll with lifeless eyes.
Qingtong was so angry that she clenched her fists, grabbed her bamboo umbrella, and, carrying the wind and spiritual energy, jumped off the crumbling mountain path.
She screamed as she chased after them, “Ning Man!”
At first, Ning Ruoque didn’t realize she was being called. She was carefully selecting safe spots to land.
Until an angry voice sounded from behind her, “Put my Little Senior Sister down!”
Ning Ruoque blurted out, “No! This earthquake isn’t over yet.”
After saying that, she stepped on a falling rock and flew several dozen meters, finally arriving at a relatively open flat ground.
Not long after landing, the trembling of the earth gradually subsided.
Ning Ruoque quickly put Yin Buran down, not forgetting to apologize, “The situation was urgent. Please forgive my rudeness.”
Finally standing on solid ground, Yin Buran was dazed for a moment.
Then she frowned, seriously straightened her wind-tousled hair, and tidied up her wrinkled clothes.
Finally, she looked up and swung a fist at Ning Ruoque’s shoulder.
She said with a blank expression, “Why didn’t you carry me? Did you not want to?”
Ning Ruoque didn’t move an inch, not even feeling any pain.
She answered honestly, “Because my right hand needs to hold a sword.”
Being ready to draw her sword at any moment was a long-standing habit of hers.
Qingtong, who had finally caught up, felt her vision go dark. “…”
Almost fainted from anger at this sword cultivator!
Glancing at Yin Buran’s pale face, Ning Ruoque paused, her eyes downcast with unease.
She had forgotten again that she didn’t have a sword right now.
“Did I hurt you?”
Ning Ruoque was asked with a lack of confidence.
If it had been anyone else being carried like that, they would have been fine. But with a constitution like Yin Buran’s, which was even weaker than a mortal’s, she was afraid of causing some harm.
However, the more you worry about something, the more likely it is to happen. Yin Buran raised her hand to clutch her chest, and her face turned a few shades paler.
Even though Ning Ruoque had been very careful, there were still some bumps along the way.
Qingtong quickly stepped forward and sent a gentle, medicinal spiritual energy into the other’s spiritual veins.
She complained with both worry and annoyance, “What on earth is Brightlight Pavilion up to?”
Ning Ruoque interjected, “Perhaps it’s that Fei Zhi.”
With the size of that Fei Zhi, it could definitely cause an earthquake.
But if it really was it, then it could only mean that the Fei Zhi was becoming more and more frantic and could lose control at any moment.
This also meant that there was not much time left for Ning Ruoque and the others.
Clearly, Yin Buran thought so too.
She interrupted Qingtong’s treatment, and after a few light coughs, she instructed, “Go back and prepare the medicine. Find a way to sprinkle it in the residence.”
“This way, at least before our people arrive, the Fei Zhi’s influence on them will be much smaller.”
Qingtong was helpless, nodding her head like a chick pecking at rice.
“Alright, alright. Little Senior Sister, don’t talk. Rest for a bit.”
Because of the earthquake, most of the plank roads built along the mountain in Brightlight Pavilion were severely damaged. Many people were dazed, still not knowing what had happened.
Ning Ruoque took the initiative to walk in front, clearing a path for the two of them.
As they were about to return to the small courtyard, a huge fallen rock, two people high, blocked their path.
She subconsciously turned her head, her gaze falling on the paper-thin Yin Buran, as if struggling with how to get her across.
The latter’s tone was icy. “I don’t want to mess up my clothes.”
Being lifted around was one thing, but if Ning Ruoque dared to carry her like a piece of cargo again, she would bite her.
Seeing Yin Buran’s reluctance, Ning Ruoque turned back dejectedly and led the way around.
As she walked, she discreetly observed Yin Buran’s expression.
Her expression was still listless, but her lips had regained some color.
It was just that she couldn’t tell if Yin Buran was still angry. Even after returning to the courtyard, she didn’t dare to approach her again.
This small courtyard had a special protective formation and was less affected. Only a few broken tiles had fallen under the eaves.
A small sparrow hopped closer, frightened away by the gloomy aura surrounding the sword cultivator.
It then flew to the windowsill and tilted its head to watch the people inside chatting.
Yin Buran wrote a prescription, leaning lazily against the window, and instructed Qingtong on how to grind the medicine.
Qingtong pounded the mortar with a loud bang, not hiding her dissatisfaction. “Little Senior Sister, even if you like sword cultivators, you should at least pick someone like the Sword Venerable.”
The entire Azurefall Creek knew that Yin Buran liked to read storybooks about the fallen Sword Venerable.
A whole bookshelf was filled with all kinds of folk legends and jianghu tales.
Occasionally, when the auction house sent news about the Sword Venerable’s relics, she would also go and take a look.
Qingtong felt that most sword cultivators were dull. If she had to choose, she would choose the one who could fight the best.
Yin Buran played with her jade bracelet out of boredom. “Oh? Then what kind of person do you think the Sword Venerable is?”
Qingtong frowned and thought for a while.
She had entered Azurefall Creek less than a hundred years ago. When she was born, the Sword Venerable had already fallen.
Therefore, she had never seen the legendary sword strike that shook the myriad stars, cut through the long night, and allowed Ning Ruoque to ascend to the position of Sword Venerable.
All her impressions of this supreme sword dao master came from storybooks and rumors.
After a brief thought, Qingtong described it to Yin Buran with vivid emotion.
“Cold-hearted and cold-faced, killing people like flies. If anyone dared to bully her Dao companion, she would string them on her sword and feed them to monsters.”
As soon as her voice fell, Yin Buran covered her mouth with her sleeve, her eyes curving and her shoulders shaking.
Her bright smile instantly outshone the plum blossoms outside the window, and even the little sparrow couldn’t help but get closer.
Qingtong was so embarrassed that her face turned red, and she glared at her. “What’s so funny? Isn’t that what all the storybooks say?”
After laughing enough, a slight curve still remained on Yin Buran’s lips. “Why don’t you go and ask someone who has actually met the Sword Venerable?”
Qingtong said with certainty, “Little Senior Sister is very familiar with her.”
“Mm.”
Yin Buran looked at Ning Ruoque, who was squatting under the covered corridor, doing who knows what.
“She would invite me to climb the mountain to watch the sunrise at the Chou hour, introduce me to the swords she collected, strange trophies, and share the sourest fruits she had ever eaten.”
As she narrated slowly, her eyes were filled with the spring of April, bright and gentle, and her tone was like a well-aged sweet wine.
Qingtong was stunned for a moment, then lowered her head and smacked her lips. “I don’t think she’s much better than Ning Man.”
Watching the sunrise at the Chou hour didn’t seem like something a normal person would do.
Little Senior Sister was able to tolerate the Sword Venerable for so long. Little Senior Sister is so good.
But when she thought of “Ning Man” again, she couldn’t help but feel a bit of pity.
So she’s a substitute. No wonder Little Senior Sister said she looked like an old acquaintance.
Qingtong was distracted as she ground the medicine. When she looked up again, Yin Buran was no longer where she was.
She had casually tied up her white hair with a green satin ribbon and was strolling towards that dark-clad sword cultivator, even leaning over to take a look.
“What are you doing?”
I wonder if the reason Ning Ruoque doesn’t remember was she made herself to forget somehow so she would be willing to sacrifice herself to kill the demon king
